Opis:
The purpose of this study was to assess the groundwater contamination from a sewage sludge landfill. The analysis was carried out in 2017 in accordance with the requirements of the national legislation for monitoring landfills and priority pollutants. The samples of groundwater from the landfill were taken from 25 observation wells, from depths of 45–60 m. The status and dynamics of changes in the landfill groundwater quality were estimated according to the data from the groundwater observation wells of the city observation network with regard to the chemical composition of groundwater and national standards of groundwater quality. The forecast estimates of a low level of pollutants entering groundwater through the soils characterized by low filtration properties were not justified. The concentration of heavy metals in groundwater was within the following range: Fe > Mn > Zn > Al > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd > Hg. The excess concentration of the nitrogen-containing pollutants was observed within the range from 1.5 to 76 (on average 10 times) above the background value. The organic contamination of landfill groundwater (COD) is 2–9 times and BOD5 – 1.5–3 times higher than the average background value of groundwater observation wells in the city network. The probable cause for the pollutants entry into groundwater is associated with lithogenous and exogenous fracturing of the rocks and insufficient efficiency of the existing anti-filtration system of the landfill.

Opis:
Leachate from public landfill in the city of Tangier, which is neither collected nor treated, could constitute a probable source of pollution of the groundwater table and of those of the Mlalah and Khandak Bou Hajjar wadis in the east, and the Mghogha and Ghir Boudra wadis to the south. This work aims to analyze the level of contamination at Tangier’s municipal waste disposal. The leachate samples were collected and analyzed during the period from 2016 to 2019 and the physicochemical parameters (humidity, pH, organic matter, etc.) were determined on these samples as well as the contents of five heavy metals (lead, cadmium, iron, chrome and zinc). Analysis of the well water shows the presence of polluting elements in the leachate water and a high concentration of metals (especially iron) that exceeds standards. This makes the effluent extremely toxic and thus presents a permanent threat to the health of the local population and the surrounding environment.

Opis:
Groundwater in the vicinity of two municipal landfills, Sianów and Karlino, has been analyzed for many years. In the period of 1982-1992, the presence of various mineral contaminants, including heavy metals, was detected in the groundwater samples collected in these areas. Since 1997, the groundwater samples have been analyzed also for the presence of PAHs. The concentrations of the pollutants in question were measured by gas chromatography. In spite of excellent apparatus and trained personel, the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the samples raised certain problems, which may be roughly itemized as follows - full absorption of the compound in the stationary phase of the chromatographic column, and desorption of the component from that phase. A number of PAHs (including benzo(a)pyrene, which is a carcinogenic species) were detected in the groundwater samples taken at points of potential contact with leachates from the landfill. The results were processed using the Statistica program, which enabled crucial correlations between particular parameters to be found.

XX wieku z powodu zanieczyszczenia wód GZWP nr 326N, rozległego i zasobnego zbiornika szczelinowo-krasowego, występującego w utworach węglanowych jury górnej, stanowiącego główny poziom wodonośny oraz podstawę zaopatrzenia w wodę. Postawiono trzy koncepcje rozprzestrzeniania się zanieczyszczenia: (1) poziomy przepływ strumienia z dominacją procesów dyspersji, (2) głęboki poziomy przepływ strumienia z ascenzyjnym ruchem wód do współczesnego poziomu drenażu, (3) migracja zanieczyszczeń w wodach powierzchniowych.
Chromium is an element widely used in chemical and metallurgical industries that is the primary source of release of chromium compounds into the environment with industrial wastewater. An example of the region contaminated by chromium compounds is Częstochowa area. Wider research was undertaken in‘90s due to water pollution in the spacious and affluent fracture-karst reservoir MGWB No. 326N, associated with the Upper Jurassic carbonate formations. This MGWB is the main aquifer and a source of water for Częstochowa. The three hypotheses of chromium pollution pathways were formulated: (1) horizontal water flow with domination of dispersion processes, (2) deep horizontal flow with ascending movement of water to the contemporary drainage level, (3) migration of pollutants in surface water. Sampling of groundwater conducted in 2011 showed that compared to 1995, chromium pollution was reduced, although up to now the problem still exists and the directions and pathways of migration of contaminated Upper Jurassic groundwater have not been yet univocally identified.

Opis:
The Mio-plio-quaternary aquifer of the Djelfa Syncline is part of a region in Algeria which is characterized by the lack of surface water resources and located in a semi-arid climate. Since alluvial aquifers, and among them our aquifer, are the most vulnerable because of thier direct exposure to the pollution caused by the infiltrated pollutants, this work focused on the assessement of groundwater pollution vulnerability, hazard and risk. Thus, several methods were used; for this purpose, such as the DRASTIC and WQI methods mapped using a GIS. The results obtained clearly show a low to moderate vulnerability. The DRASTIC model and its validation based on the correlation with WQI revealed a low correlation ($WQ_I$vs $D_I$ : 0.221). Since the vulnerability model does not match with the groundwater quality, pollution risk was assessed by combining vulnerabilty and hazard (i.e, water quality). The risk map illustrated three levels ranging from low to high risk. This map should be helpful in decision making and groundwater management through avoiding high risk areas.

Opis:
Coastal aquifers are usually vulnerable to contamination by saltwater intrusion. The degree of contamination depends on the amount of former seawater intruding the aquifer as submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). A three-dimensional numerical SEAWAT model was developed to provide insights to the responses of saltwater intrusion and amount of seawater portion of SGD, to groundwater withdrawal from four wells at different spatial locations. The results showed that saltwater wedge encroachment varies with a withdrawal rate and well location. Increasing withdrawal rates from 0.165 $m^3$/s to 0.53166 $m^3$/s resulted in a noticeable increase in wedge encroachment into the aquifer from 589 m to 1319 m, respectively, regardless of the distance from the coastline. However, higher withdrawals from the wells closer to the coastline caused the hydraulic head near the seaside to drop below the terrestrial head, causing the saltwater wedge to be pushed back toward the sea. Simulations also showed that a coastal well might act as a hydraulic barrier that prevents the brackish zone from moving further inland, which is critically important in terms of groundwater management. Seawater contributed from 5% to above 33% in SGD. Although the withdrawal rates from Well 3 were 10 to 20 times larger than the Well 2 rates, the seawater contribution associated with Well 3 was about the same. This is attributed to the horizontal vicinity of Well 2 to the seacoast boundary compared to Well 3 even though Well 3 is deeper than Well 2, demonstrating that it is the horizontal location that governs the amount of abstracted former seawater.

Opis:
Non-point pollution is the most widely spread water contaminant on earth. Nitrate pollution is a serious problem in all European countries (Spalding and Exuer 1993, European Com. Report 1991, Anastasiadis 1994, Xefteris 2000). Nitrate contamination originates mainly from agriculture applications, particularly from the extensive use of nitrogen fertilizer and manure, which leads to nitrate leaching from large land areas in the soil and eventually into the groundwater. This-non point contamination cannot be delineated or controlled. The analysis and prediction of diffuse sources of groundwater pollution, as in case of nitrates, is a very difficult task, due to a variety of reasons such as a) the complex physical process of flow and transport, b) the large scale of the problem and c) the inherent difficulties of efficient sampling. All kinds of processes occur in both the unsaturated and saturated zones and it is, therefore practically infeasible to couple all individual models in order to understand the phenomenon as a whole. As groundwater is the only source of potable water in many places on earth, assessing the health risks from chemicals and protecting humans are given priority in government decisions. For this purpose a complex procedure is required that integrates research and technical expertise from various scientific disciplines. An approach to face the nitrate problem would certainly include the study of the fate of nitrate in soil and groundwater, as affected by a variety of environmental and anthropogenic processes and the evaluation of existing and the development of new agricultural practices relating to quality control and management. For Greece, a member state of European Union, agriculture is a very important sector for the economy and thus the cost of groundwater pollution is an inevitable consequence of its development. Agricultural activities in Greece employ 27% of active population when at the same time the average in European Union is 8%. (N. S. S., 1995). Additionally the 80-90% of total water consumption is used for agricultural activities. Groundwater nitrate contamination from agricultural activities will be a matter of concern for many years to come. In this work a wide range of models have been applied in a study case in Northern Greece. The value of each particular model relates directly to the amount of information and more generally of knowledge we have of every phenomenon, which means that even the more sophisticated models should be validated with reference to specific cases to which they are going to be applied. Due to the diffuse nature of non-point contamination field data are required that can describe to the highest possible level of accuracy the spatial and temporal variations of quite a number of parameters. Statistical and spatial models are very useful in obtaining average values and also in identifying the structure of parameters, variables and their relationships.

The leachate coming from the landfill is a serious problem. This is because the leachate water can contaminate the wells of the residents around the landfill. This research was conducted at Jabon Landfill located in Jabon District of Sidoarjo Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. Jabon Landfill has been operating since 2003 with a controlled landfill system that has triggered environmental risks due to the leachate output. The purpose of this study was to determine the classification of the shallow groundwater quality status based on the pollution index (PI) around Jabon Landfill at a distance of around 250 meters, 500 meters and 1,000 meters from the landfill. The pollution index was determined by analyzing the pollutant concentration consisting of these following parameters: pH, BOD, COD and Fe. The results of the analysis show that the pH parameter had a higher value than the pH at Jabon Landfill of 7.2–7.5. The pH at Jabon Landfill was 6.35. The Fe parameter shows that the value of 1.694 in the groundwater well closest to Jabon Landfill and the wells further away indicates that the Fe concentration was lower for the latter, namely 0.081 at a distance of up to 200 meters. On the basis of the Pollution Index, the highest value was 5.45 at Well 7 is located 196 m from Jabon Landfill. Meanwhile, the well furthest from Jabon Landfill at a distance of 1,000 m showed a lightly polluted status with a Pollution Index of 1.91. The further the location of the well away from Jabon Landfill, the Pollution Index value tended to decrease. This means that the pollution status generally improves. Overall, the pollution status of the 18 wells shows that 2 wells are moderately polluted, 15 wells are lightly polluted and 1 well is in good condition.

The protection and preservation of good groundwater quality is of critical importance worldwide, nowadays. Increasing urbanization, economic development and agricultural activities, combined with limited precipitation contribute to the quantitative and qualitative degradation of groundwater resources, especially in the eastern Mediterranean region. For this purpose, a series of actions are implemented including groundwater vulnerability mapping that can depict prone to pollution aquifers which need protection and/or restoration measures. In this study, the efficiency of two well-known methodologies (COP and DRASTIC) for groundwater vulnerability and pollution risk mapping was assessed in the Sperchios river basin. The vulnerability and pollution risk maps of the two methodologies were spatially compared to each other and the observed similarities and differences were discussed and explained. The output of the study shows that in the particular geoenvironmental conditions DRASTIC method performs better than the COP, particularly in the lowland, porous media aquifer.

The research was carried out in order to identify and assess groundwater contamination in the area of the former factory of paints and varnishes “Polifarb” in Gdańsk. A network of temporary boreholes allowed specifying the size of the active sources of contamination and estimating the volume of contaminated rocks and the amount of polluted water. Two zones of polluted water have been identified, with different specific substances. In the first zone, located in the area of the former “Polifarb” factory and close behind it, the water contained polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), volatile aromatic hydrocarbons (BTX), phenols, petrol and mineral oils. In the second zone, chloroorganic compounds (VOC) were detected. Diagnostic modelling and prognostic simulations allowed a preliminary evaluation of the rate of pollutants migration towards the wells of the “Czarny Dwór” groundwater intake.

The depletion of aquifer systems in arid and semiarid regions worldwide is causing acute water scarcity and quality degradation, and leading to extensive ecosystem damages. Groundwater is exposed to a variety of anthropogenic water pollution, such as raw wastewater disposal in the Draa Wadi and the use of septic tanks. In this respect, a study performed in some wells of Fezouata (South-east of Morocco) aimed at both discovering the main components of the aquatic subterranean fauna unknown up to now in this area, and the potential relationships between this fauna and the water quality The principal physico-chemical characteristics of water were measured between November 2019 to March 2021 for 15 wells, which were selected considering their position with respect to the pollution sources known in surface. The Fezouata groundwater is distinguished by its high salinity with an increasing gradient from upstream to downstream. The aquatic fauna in the 15 wells showed 12 stygofauna species. In the protected wells which are situated far from the pollution sources, the fauna is dominated by Cirolanidae, Hydrobiidae, Metacrangonctydae, Stenasellidae, and Thermosbaenacea. On the other hand, in the less protected well, close to the pollution sources, the fauna is made of epigean species, such as insect’s larva, mainly Culicidae and Chironomidae. The analysis of the water quality and the subterranean biodiversity shows that the latter decreases with increasing groundwater pollution. It seems that the impact of the acute pollution affected the stygocenose even by reducing drastically the biodiversity.

Applications of geophysical mapping to structural geology, prospecting and environment protection purposes are presented. Both classic and more advanced geophysical methods can be employed to enhance either regional, semi-detailed or detailed mapping of geological structures. In the case of regional and semi-detailed studies, gravity and magnetotelluric methods are supplementary to seismic, especially where significant screening and attenuating of seismic waves occur. Detailed investigations of environmental protection issues might include a wide range of geophysical methods, but in the case of investigation of groundwater pollution usually resistivity methods are applied. Opis:
The result of human activity is polluting the soil and water. Based on the results of heavy metals studies it can be stated that the level of contamination of soil and water in urban areas is not high. This image is changing after taking into account other types of pollution. Besides some heavy metal contamination urban areas are contaminated with petroleum. Contamination of oil derivatives has a significant impact on the soil and water environment. In addition, some petroleum substances, such as petrol, have high vapour pressure. This causes a displacement of soil air from the vadose zone through the hydrocarbon gases, which creates a risk of explosion, especially in urban areas. This paper describes the pollution of ground-water oil derivatives in an urban area on the example of an oil filling station, operated for several years. In order to assess the condition of soil, 90 soil samples from different depths and 20 samples of groundwater were taken. Samples were taken for laboratory oil content tests. Using a computer program, a map of quality standards exceedances of soil and groundwater at the oil filling station and its vicinity was created. Results of laboratory tests of water samples are presented in tables and based on them, the classification of the underground water quality was made. Results of this study indicate a significant pollution of soil and groundwater exceeding the applicable standards. Condition of the soil and the quality of underground water in the oil filling station indicate the necessity of reparation.
