Opis:
Poland ranks sixth in Europe (behind Germany, Italy, France, Spain and England) in terms of demand for plastics, and the Polish plastics processing industry used in 2017 to produce about 3.5 million tons of polymer materials, in view of total demand in Europe estimated at approx. 51.5 million tons. It is assumed that Polish industry uses about 7% of total demand in Europe. In Poland, about 33% of the domestic demand for plastics is directed to the packaging industry. Along with the growing demand for plastics, packaging production and social consumption are increasing. The article presents the sources of greenhouse gas emissions from the food industry. An LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) analysis was carried out that identifies potential environmental burdens for the bottle forming process. The scope of work included selected stages of shaping bottles made of two types of PET and PLA polymer materials. The aim of the work was to demonstrate the impact of bottle production on the condition of the natural environment and to indicate the factors determining these influences.

Opis:
The activities of transport operations exhibit both positive and negative outcomes. Its negative effects on human health and the sustainability of the environment are of interest in this study. As a result, the study investigated the influence of transport operations on the changing local climate in Nigeria's southwestern cities. It investigated motorists' socioeconomic status (SES) and travel characteristics; the salient components of transport operations contributing to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions); the effect of GHG emissions from transport operations on the local climate; transport externalities contributing to local temperature changes; and the effect of GHG emissions from transport operations on human health in the research location. This study employed a cross-sectional research design, utilizing systematic sampling to collect 580 copies of questionnaires administered to commercial motorists found in queues across two randomly selected parks in each capital city within the region. Both descriptive and inferential statistics (ANOVA and Linear Regression) were used to analyze the data. The study found that 60% of the motorists were middle-aged (aged between 36 and 45). The majority (70%) drive an average of 100 to 150 km, and premium motor spirit (PMS) is the primary source of energy for 95% of them. The nature and condition of the fuel in use are the top-ranked components of transport operations contributing to GHG emissions. The result of the ANOVA revealed a significant variation among the components of transport operations contributing to GHG emissions (F = 28.302, p = 0.000<0.05). Meanwhile, the linear regression results indicate that vehicular GHG emissions have a significant impact on the local climate (F1⁄578=30.091, p=0.000<0.05). Traffic congestion and bad road conditions were the top-ranked transport externalities contributing to the changing local climate. The most common effects of GHG emissions on human health were headaches and difficulty breathing. Considering these findings, this study suggests the best tactics to lessen the effects of GHG emissions from transport operations, which adversely affect the local climate and human health in the study area.

Opis:
Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has become a necessity and not an option to sustain the environment in both human and natural systems. The Slovak Republic (SR), like the European Union (EU), aims to become greenhouse gas neutral by 2050. To reach this ambitious target, emissions will need to fall by 55% compared to those in the base year 1990. Therefore, forecasting GHG emission amounts is important. The grey model is one of the widespread mathematical forecasting methods. There exist studies that have used some types of grey models to predict GHG but not in the case of the Slovak Republic. We have optimized the length of the input sequence in the rolling mechanism to enhance the forecast accuracy of a new grey model combining the Bernoulli equation with the rolling mechanism. Standard grey model, nonlinear grey Bernoulli model, and grey model with rolling mechanism were used to prove the validity of our optimization and to compare prediction performance among grey models. The novel model was also used for a long-term forecast of GHG emissions in the SR for the years from 2020 to 2040 and compared with officially reported projections. Calculated values showed that the SR is on a good way to reach set targets towards climate change mitigation.

Opis:
This study provides further evidence on the relationship between the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee and corporate environmental performance in the United Kingdom. For the purpose of exploring corporate environmental performance, the study uses Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions as the proxies. In the UK, listed companies report their GHG emissions under the three main emissions categories (i.e., Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3) as developed by GHG protocol standards. Using Scopes 1 and 2 GHG emissions, the study proposes a negative relationship between the CSR committee and Scope 1 emissions, whereas, a positive link is proposed between CSR committee and Scope 2 emissions. The findings in this study support the hypotheses that scope 1 emission and CSR committees are negatively associated while a positive relationship was found between Scope 2 and CSR committee. Also, this research reveals the significant roles played by the presence of an environmental team and female gender diversity in moderating the CSR committee and GHG emissions relationship. Though, the CSR committee was found to have a positive effect on reducing GHG emissions, the presence of the environmental team had a much significant influence on reducing corporate GHG emissions. The findings are relevant for decision making and corporate governance measures to reduce corporate GHG emissions.

Opis:
The subject of this publication is to determine the impact of biogas plants on the environment, with particular emphasis on greenhouse gasses emissions associated with the production and management of biogas as the main plant product. The environmental impact of the agricultural sector as well as the state of development of the biogas market in European Union are presented as background for consideration of greenhouse gas emissions. One of the economy sectors responsible for GHG emissions is agriculture. One of the solutions of GHG reduction in agriculture is slurry management using biogas technology. It should be emphasized, that biogas not always has favorable emission parameters. The final emission throughout the whole life cycle of this energy carrier depends on many factors. The structure of GHG emissions largely depends on what type of raw material it used for biogas production and in what kind of tanks the digestate sludge is stored. If waste raw materials are used for biogas production, then GHG emission associated with their acquisition is assumed to be zero. On the other hand, if dedicated energy crops are used for biogas production, the emission connected with cultivation of these plants are added to the total GHG emissions. They are directly related to the use of fertilizers and plant protection products, field emissions of nitrous oxide and fuel combustion during the operation of agricultural machinery. Influence on the GHG emission has also the kind id digestate storage tank. If these are closed tanks, there is no emissions to the atmosphere. If tank is open, then methane is emitted directly to the air and is included in the total GHG balance.

Increased waste generation due to population growth and increasing consumption patterns cause pollution, including pollution in global scale due to the emission of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from the waste in the landfill. The study purposed to analyze the GHG (Green House Gases) emission generated by solid waste management in Malang in 2012 and in the next 10 years through the application of waste recycling from upstream to downstream. The production of methane (CH4) in landfill were analyzed using the model equations developed by IPPC (2001) and the reduction of the GHG from recycling were analyzed using GHG emission factors. Dynamic model of the GHG emission was developed to analyze and to predict GHG emission from recycling and dumping activity. The GHG emissions of waste management in 2012 (Scenario 1) is 192,291.19 tCO2e and in the next 10 years is 254,548.93 tCO2e (>32.19%). Application of Scenario 2 and Scenario 3 in the next 10 years produces GHG emission 134,290.38 tCO2e (<30.16%) and 37,741.56 tCO2e (<80.37%).

Opis:
Retrofitting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in existing buildings and applying energy-efficient technologies can significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions. In this work, two options of HVAC retrofitting were proposed and discussed for the existing heating system of school of engineering at the University of Jordan as a case study. The experimental tests showed that only one of the three diesel boilers work normally while the other two boilers are not efficient, with actual efficiency of 25%. The first retrofitting was to upgrade the existing heating system to a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) boiler system with estimated annual saving of 29,757 Jordanian dinar (JOD), and a payback period of 3.9 years. The second option for retrofitting was a new HVAC system for the building including heating and air conditioning with a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system and heat pump chiller. The estimated cost showed that the VRF system was the lowest one in running cost in winter. The diesel boilers had the highest greenhouse gas emissions with an average value of 377.3 tons of CO2 per year, while LPG boilers achieved the second highest emissions of around 279 tons of CO2 per year, whereas the heat pump chiller in winter produced 199 tons of CO2 and the VRF system emitted 180 tons in winter. The LCCA economic analysis was performed for the proposed systems, showing that the LPG boilers system was more feasible than the diesel boilers system, while the VRF system was more feasible than the heat pump chiller system.

Welfare of societies and way of life depends on the consumption of high-energy fossil fuels. However, this entails the degradation of the environment, including contributing to the growth of greenhouse gas emissions. To measure the size of the issue at the national level so called carbon footprint can be used, which is measured in CO2 equivalent. The paper presents an analysis of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union in general and per capita.

Opis:
This paper describes the development of geoinformation technology for the spatial analysis of greenhouse gas emissions caused by fossil fuel combustion in the industry sector in Poland. Mathematical models and software have been elaborated, which make it possible to calculate the emissions and construct an appropriate geospatial database. The models are based on algorithms of proxy data disaggregation to the level of point- and area-type emission sources. These tools take into account the non-uniformity of anthropogenic activity and spatial distribution of emission sources. Numerical experiments were conducted and the results of spatial analysis are presented in the form of digital maps.
