Opis:
The main task of the research was to investigate and differentiate the historical stages of the formation of Ukraine’s geopolitical view, based on the Ukrainian statehood history and works of key researches, which had been directly influenced by the evolution of its geopolitical consciousness and thinking. In the article, three main historical stages of Ukraine’s geopolitical view formation were differentiated and the reason why the state’s geopolitical view gradually transformed into the state’s geopolitical interest after Ukraine attained independence was substantiated. The article includes a SWOT analysis of Ukraine’s geopolitical location, based on which the state’s geopolitical interests of local, regional and global levels were represented. As Ukraine is in the field of geopolitical orientation of many countries not only in Europe but also around the world, the study of the state’s geopolitical view formation and current transformation is topical and can be useful for foreign researchers.

Opis:
Until the late 1980s and the dawn of the end of the Eastern Bloc, communist Bulgaria was considered to be the closest ally of the Soviet Union. Now, 30 years later, the Bulgarian state has been integrated into the main Euro-Atlantic organisations. Taking these radical changes as its starting point, this article outlines the process and consequences of post-1989 geopolitical and geoeconomic reorientation of Bulgaria. The aim was also to present the main geopolitical challenges in Bulgaria’s relations with Russia and Turkey. These states have been influencing the political, economic and cultural development of Bulgaria for centuries. The effects of their influence have remained problematic to this day. As Bulgaria remains a country with a complex geopolitical position, it continues its twentieth-century strategy and tries to maintain balance between its own national interest and the influence of the main centres of power. The author draws particular attention to the fact that the model based on the variability of geopolitical priorities was once again confirmed in the analysed period. This model is not only based on pragmatism in relations with the outside world, which is traditional for the Bulgarian political elite, but is also dependant on the temporary distribution of power within the Balkan geopolitical knot. It seems that the model will continue to be valid, at least in the near future.

Problematyka związana z procesami integracji, dezintegracji i reintegracji, obserwowanych w XXI wieku w Europie wymaga poszukiwania nowych narzędzi badania i opisu istoty tych problemów oraz wprowadzania możliwości prognozy przyszłego rozwoju wypadków.
The issues related to the processes of integration, disintegration and reintegration observed in the 21st century in Europe need new research tools. One of these tools is the concept of geopolitical wedges, which can be used by the powers to keep influence in the areas of its natural interests. The aim of the article is to present theoretical concepts related to the issue of geopolitical wedges as well to describe one of the examples of geopolitical wedges, i.e. the Kaliningrad region. In addition, the author will review the scientific literature for the presence of this concept, and will attempt to locate the concept of geopolitical wedges among the essential geopolitical paradigms. The author's assumption is not only to locate the issue of the geopolitical wedge in the literature of the subject, but also to present its explanatory role for the description of international relations in Europe on the example of processes of reintegration of the post-Soviet space.

In the article Africa's position in the achievements of the main representatives' geopolitical thought has been described. In the period until 1945 considerations about this continent as an object of expansion were preferred, it was also emphasized Africa's little significance in the context of a lack of sufficient power on the global scale. An interesting exception has been created by Halford Mackinder, who called a major part of Africa "Southern Heartland" - a territory recognized as difficult to conquest and control by sea powers. In the modern geopolitical thought more attention has been paid to marginalization of Africa, what is a consequence of the lack of essential centres of power, economic weakness, and not completely formed separate African civilisation. Another considered aspect was the main lines dividing the continent. They coincide in the high degree with the common division into North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The main purpose of the article is to examine the causal relationship between key elements of the geostrategic environment (i.e. political, military, and technological) and the changes in the characteristics of proxy force. Qualitative data analysis is used to identify the geopolitical environment conditions, actors, and their relationship. The causal analysis between key elements of the geopolitical environment, such as politics, military, and technological, therefore influences how proxy forces change character. The findings imply that the contemporary geopolitical environment is changing the character of the proxies. They can be used as multipurpose forces depending on the desired strategic outcome. The results advocate that proxies have a global reach beyond the traditional battlefield. These capabilities allow proxies to be used in a wide range of political, economic, and military activities, especially in peacetime, and, therefore, influencing, changing, and damaging the state’s mutual relationships. Despite differences between several theoretical perspectives of security theories, many concur on the low desirability of proxy force. The changing characteristics of proxy war allow state and non-state actors to wage war with a minimal use of force, or none at all, beyond the traditional battlefield. Political violence demonstrated through proxy force to fulfil foreign policy goals has become even more violent. In such action, disregarding the sustainable strategic goal can easily damage the state’s international relations and threaten international and regional stability. The overall findings show the urgency for a more holistic approach in the analysis of proxy warfare as part of security studies and military operations.

This paper focuses on the issue of geopolitics in the pop culture interpretation as illustrated by the Polish pop music after the year 1989. Songs selected from various trends of the Polish popular music made the source material of the text. The primary study method involved the analysis of the lyrics discourse. The Polish geopolitical imaginations used to revolve around the basis axis of better West and worse East, symbolized mainly by Russia, but its image was transferred over entire Asia. Asia, including China, was scarcely present in the geopolitical imaginations contained in the pop music, which, at the same time, reflected the irrelevant interest of Polish elites in global problems. The discourses in the musical texts about China frequently adopted the West’s perspective, where Poland made part of as seen by our elites. The rhetoric strategy concerning China in popular music featured two essential views, which references Orientalism as specified by E. Said. It explains the frequent use of the postcolonial discourse by the Polish elites, also the music ones, which promoted the supremacy of the West over the rest of the world and the universal nature of the Western world values which were meant to be implemented into other civilizations and nations for their own sake. China was presented as a growing threat for the dominance of the West, the USA in the first place, as an alternative model of globalization and international deal putting offthe world by its cultural and geopolitical alienation, as well as indicating negative effects for Poland.

Opis:
There is almost no period of history in which there were no wars in Caucasus. This is a strategically important area because it covers a narrow land between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It represents one of the two roads that help people reach the Middle East from the mainland of Europe. During its history, the Caucasus was part of the Russian Empire, the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, or it consisted of a large number of independent states. During the whole of the XIX century on the territory of the Caucasus, the battles were fought in order to obtain the exit to the Caspian Sea. Only in Soviet times there were no conflicts. Some historians claim that this is the result of the correct national policy of the USSR, while others, contrary to them, are convinced that the peace occurred due to a firm socialist regime, which led to an extremely tense situation right after the collapse of the USSR. Also, the Caucasus is one of the few regions of Russia where Islam is the dominant religion. Many times, this fact served as a trigger for conflicts, including the armed conflicts. In this paper, the geopolitical situation of the given territories, mainly after the disintegration of the USSR, is presented with a special reference to the North Caucasus and the South Caucasus (Transcaucasia).

Despite the fact that the classical concept of geopolitics was first formed by Rudolf Kjellén in the early 20th century, modern experts in international relations still discuss the feasibility and relevance of these classical methods in today’s conditions. The academic debate revolves around new methods of geopolitical struggle in the foreign policy of the states in the international arena. Geographical features take a back seat, and economic, military, technological and informational factors come to the fore. The article’s aim is to analyse the impact of geopolitical competition of world leaders during the COVID-19 crisis. The author demonstrates the tendency of aggravation of geopolitical competition between the so-called Collective West and Chinese–Russian alliance. The degree of intensity of geopolitical competition poses a threat to the security and stability of the EU. To discuss the geopolitical competition, it is proposed to include the following issues: the main actors of geopolitical competition, the key methods of this competitiveness and their evolution under the coronavirus pandemic.

The determination of the Presheva Valley as a special region highlights the need for theoretical analysis and the use of different methods and principles which enable geographical regionalization. The Presheva Valley represents a natural continuation of the albanian ethnic territories. With a very convenient position in terms of geography and transportation, as well as its geostrategic and geopolitical basis, it has been occupied by many invaders throughout different periods of history. Under the current administrative, political and territorial division of Serbia, the municipalities of Presheva and Bujanoci belong to the Pčinja district, based in Vranje, while the municipality of medvegja belongs to the Jablanica district, based in Leskoc. The Presheva Valley has had the status of special region in various periods, but since it shares historical, ethnic and demographic characteristics with other albanian ethnic territories, it has frequently been separated for the purpose of the assimilation of the Albanian people.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union many researchers claimed that an ideological vacuum had occurred in Russia. The article points out that the communist ideology has been replaced with the eclectic mix of geopolitical doctrines, Russian conservatism and Orthodox religion. Geopolitics has become not only the tool useful for formulation the foreign policy objectives, but also an effective instrument of mobilization of the Russian society around defined aspirations, as well as a means of influencing external policies. A particular recipient of Russian geopolitics is so-called close abroad (this term refers to the independent republics which emerged after the dissolution of the Soviet Union) and the Russian minorities living there.

The political events – negotiations and manifestations, wars and conflicts, elections and strikes – are communicated with the image of geopolitical space, where the events go on. The provident power allows for constant work with these images. The power appropriates the space by the geographical images. Geographical images forming and development in the different fields of social and political activity. “Geopolitical visions” and “geographical imaginations” usually is defined as: any idea concerning the relation between one’s own and other places, involving feelings of (in) security or (dis)advantage (and/or) invoking ideas about a collective mission or foreign policy strategy. A geographical imaginations also can be defined as the way in which influential groups in cultural life of state define that state and notion within the world. It addresses the primary acts of identification and boundary-formation that population groups within a state engages. The modelling of geographical images is an effective method of geopolitical development representations. Political researches operate with the political and politico-geographical space. These kinds of space aren’t equivalent of original and traditional geographical space. This is an anamorphical (transformed) space, and the relief of this space is the result of geographical images interaction. It’s not only visual representations or pictographic images (pictures). In a broad sense, geoimages are effective concepts to represent geopolitical processes. The state of Russia does not have a single geopolitical imagination. Rather exist a few separate imaginations. National identity, the question of what and who is Russian, has never found a straightforward answer. One of the most important images of Russia is image Russia-Byzantium, it’s the main Russian geopolitical metaphor. Byzantium (during the Middle Age Byzantine Empire was one of the most powerful economic, cultural, and military force in Europe), and the Orthodox Church (in popular view of Byzantine Empire Byzantine culture and Orthodoxy are one and the same), play big role in a political mythology in Russia. This vision is coming back on the Russian political and intellectual scene in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The resurrections of the metaphor in post-soviet Russia let to the rise of neo-byzantinism ideology. In neo-byzantinism vision Russia is the successor of the historical mission of Byzantium; the main principle of Russian statehood is the symphony of authorities, unity of the state and church. Orthodoxy is the state religion; the main geopolitical goal of the empire expansion of the Orthodox tradition, construction of the Eurasian Orthodox empire at the scale of the whole globe.

The primary tool utilized to shape and influence both social consciousness and international relations are geographical names used in textbooks and in the public debate. Their usefulness depends, among others, on how they are correct and precise. Contemporary geography does not seem to serve well international relations. This is because numerous geographical names are ambiguous and not precise. The most common names nowadays concerning the eastern part of Europe, both in scientific discourse and in colloquial language, are the expressions of Central Europe and East-Central Europe. Although they find justification neither in geographical reality nor in geopolitical conditions, they have dominated not only the media and popular publications, but also scientific literature. If the disciplines of geography and geopolitics are to be useful in foreign policy and international relations, they must reflect, with maximum precision, the geographic reality. Therefore it is necessary to restore the old distinction between East and West in the scientific discourse, which reflects best the geographical reality and geopolitical conditions of Europe.

This article offers a perspective on the study of the connections between neo-Eurasianism and Meridionalism. Its main argument is that there exists a possible tendency of Meridionalism becoming an instrument of neo-Eurasianism – and by extension of Russian national interests – in Latin America. Although Russian interference in Brazil is not new, the bonds between Meridionalism and neo-Eurasianism may now assume a clearer than ever aspect in strategic terms between the two countries. It is also noteworthy that both those formulations came from academia. There is a particular logical inconsistency to be pointed out within Meridionalism: either an ideological purpose overcomes geostrategic goals or the opposite. In order to solve that problem, the article is structured in two parts: a short look at the Brazilian School of Geopolitics’ cores and the comparative analysis of Meridionalism and neo-Eurasianism.The theoretical and methodological framework is linked to the realist theoretical tradition (positivism), with a mixture of geopolitical studies approach and strategic planning framework. Geopolitical studies simply provide the tools to explain the Brazilian School of Geopolitics’ ideas and to identify geopolitical factors within the strategic plans. Together with strategic planning, the comparative analysis of Meridionalism and neo-Eurasianism, as strategic plans, is accomplished.

Successive enlargements of NATO and the EU to the east have pointed out the inconsistency of Russian policy. As Georgia and Ukraine have embraced the Euro-Atlantic vector and Moldova - the European one, then it was revealed that Russian interests derive from the main (unofficial) objectives of its foreign policy, but also of geostrategic interests – to maintain control over the former Soviet republics. In order to preserve its great power status, Russia needs to maintain its influence, including military presence in Moldova as an instrument of exerting political pressure.

Opis:
The analysis in this article provides an overview of the research on the current relations among countries of the South China Sea basin. For this purpose, I have decided to apply the geopolitical research workshop, focusing on its contemporary approach. On the one hand, this work uses the available indicators and index to gauge the level of development, economic and demographic potential, and military expenditure of these states. On the other hand, an effort was made to analyze and measure power, taking into account the changing geopolitical status of countries in this sub-region. Contemporary geopolitics in this context allows to verify the scale of the impact on permanent environmental and geographic factors (e.g. publicized investments carried out by the People’s Republic of China in Mischief Reef, Fiery Cross, Subi Reef and Woody Island) and the elaboration of proposals going beyond the classical, geopolitical framework (morphological, political and military factors). Therefore, this article also includes the use of geopolitical codes to assess the current strategies of these countries and to describe potential scenarios of actors’ behaviour in the sub-region.

Opis:
This paper explores the interrelationships between religious attitudes, ethnic and linguistic identities, and geopolitical preferences in three geopolitical fault-line cities in Eastern Ukraine – Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. The research is based on data taken from a survey and the associated descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The findings suggest that the religious divide in Eastern Ukraine does not generate additional division but instead strengthens the existing divide, which is known to be formulated in terms of geopolitical as opposed to language or ethnicity-based categories, although language and ethnicity do have an influence on geopolitical preferences. Moreover, civic-national identity appears to be more relevant than ethnic-national identity to understanding the religious fault-line in Eastern Ukraine.

Opis:
It is not possible to disregard the influence geopolitical factor on transformation of international reality, similarly it should not overestimate. The popularity geopolitical thought favour growing dynamics of changes in international relations, the decomposition of old systems of strengths and shaping the new policentryzm. The relative sense is falling of United States power and growthing a new great powers, shape of international balance system. The realistic optics forces to see the world hierarchy of strengths the objective order, which permits to bring back the individual international roles to occupy by states position. In explaining today's International Order, geopolitics plaits and is supplement with globalization. The Geopolicy take into account the most important objects from the point of the global balance of might, especially with part of a new powers. During when globalization anticipates the growing correlations as well, as the maturation the cooperative and integration processes. The geopolitical structure of international system has three-phase character, despite that happend the total decomposition of cold-war divisions. The „first” world make up the the richest states of the West. In contrast to them determine "third world”, full of regress and instability, in which exists tens of geopolitical individuals menaced with fall. Between world of wealth and poverty is alocated "second” world, which has the same character, typical for both. There are states, which will decide about international balance of strentgh in XXI age among three main sources of power – the United States, European Union and China. Also, belong to them Russia, the Latin states, states of ASEAN, Iran and arabian states. Their position is stable, they can, in dependence of development, to join to „first” world or falling in regress and find in „third” world. Binding this geopolittical division with effects of globalization as profitable visions, in civilization sense, it is possible to accept, that the „first” world is globalizated, the „second” world – partly globalizated and the „third” – where globalization is absence.
