Opis:
This paper is devoted to the empirical evaluation of the extension of the Gärdenfors’ similarity model. His proposition insufficiently emphasizes the asymmetry of the modeled relationship of similarity. The proposed modification allows one to include the asymmetry of similarity and significantly sensitize the model to any contextual nuances. The model was compared with other theoretical proposals of geometrical modeling of similarity, including two asymmetric models and one symmetrical. The empirical evaluation of the model took place in two series of experiments. The obtained statistical data were compared with results inferred by tested models. The evaluation was based on iterative procedure designed to minimize the error generated by all compared models.

Opis:
The concept of similarity is undoubtedly one of the cornerstones of contemporary cognitive science. Although it plays an important role in most of the cognitive activities of man, the issue of the appropriate representation of similarities is an extremely difficult task. One approach to the issue of similarity representation is based on the geometric model used in Gärdenfors’ conceptual spaces theory. However, the criticism of the geometrical model of similarity still seems to remain valid, and the model itself is regarded, by many critics, as an inadequate tool for representing mental phenomena. The primary objective of the article is to propose a model of similarity which would be insensitive to this criticism. The first part is devoted to basic assumptions of the conceptual spaces theory and the axioms of its model of similarity. In the second part I present the most common critical arguments against the geometrical model of similarity and then introduce a geometric model of similarity immune to the criticism.

Opis:
The way to model complex shapes has a significant influence depending on the context. Handling an object can be considerably increased if a good underlying model is used. On the contrary, preponderant problems can appear if an unsuited model is associated to the object. The main criterion to discriminate existing models is to determine the balance between: their ability to control global characteristics and the possibility to handle local features of the shape. The fact is very few models are adapted both to structure and to geometrical modelling. In this paper, we first describe an overview of existing approaches. They can be classified principally in two groups: skeleton based models, used to control the global aspect of the shape, and free form models, used to control local specificities of the object. Then, trying to keep the advantages of both techniques in mind, we present an original approach based on a multi-layer model to represent a 3D object. We focus on the ability to take into account both global and local characteristics of a complex shape, on topological and morphological levels, as well as on the geometric level. To do that, the proposed model is composed of three layers. We call the boundary mesh the external layer, including a multi-resolution feature. We enhance this representation by adding an internal structure: the inner skeleton, which is topologically equivalent to the input object. In addition to that, a third layer links the structural entity and the geometrical crust, to induce an intermediary level of representation. This approach is applied to classical and medical data through a specific algorithm.

Opis:
This review discusses the content of Mateusz Hohol’s new book Foundations of Geometric Cognition. Mathematical cognition has until now focused mainly on human numerical abilities. Hohol’s work tackles geometric cognition, an issue that has not been described in previous investigations into mathematical cognition. The main strength of the book lies in its critical analysis of a huge amount of results from empirical experiments. The author formulates his theoretical proposals very carefully, avoiding radical and one-sided solutions. He claims that human geometric cognition is based mainly on two core systems, both being phylogenetically hardwired, namely the system of layout geometry and the system of object geometry. The interaction of these systems becomes amplified in the individual development of the mind, which, in turn, is supported by the use of language. The second part of the review contains the reviewer’s remarks concerning the history of geometry, experiments related to spatial representations, and the role of geometry in mathematical education.

Cartan-Monge geometric approach

Opis:
The Cartan-Monge geometric approach to the characteristics method for Hamilton-Jacobi type equations and nonlinear partial differential equations of higher orders is analyzed. The Hamiltonian structure of characteristic vector fields related with nonlinear partial differential equations of first order is analyzed, the tensor fields of special structure are constructed for defining characteristic vector fields naturally related with nonlinear partial differential equations of higher orders. The generalized characteristics method is developed in the framework of the symplectic theory within geometric Monge and Cartan pictures. The related characteristic vector fields are constructed making use of specially introduced tensor fields, carrying the symplectic structure. Based on their inherited geometric properties, the related functional-analytic Hopf-Lax type solutions to a wide class of boundary and Cauchy problems for nonlinear partial differential equations of Hamilton-Jacobi type are studied. For the non-canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equations there is stated a relationship between their solutions and a good specified functional-analytic fixed point problem, related with Hopf-Lax type solutions to specially constructed dual canonical Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
