Opis:
Archeological studies require a precise and interdisciplinary approach. Use of the noninvasive methods in urban area investigations is expected because they do not result in any changes in land architecture plans. Very good combination fulfilling such demands are geochemical analyses of: pH, Eh, conductivity and heavy metals concentrations in soils and the results of the ground penetrating radar method. These methods allow for a more precise selection of places of interest and can be also used for a more accurate calibration and better interpretation of subsequent results. Proposed methodology gives good final results thanks to complementarity of each method and can be used under variable conditions.

This article covers the methodology of geochemical analysis, interpretation of results and solution that was proposed to abandon a depleted oil reservoir Polana Ostre, Poland. Polana Ostre as a reservoir was discovered in the 19th century and in 1870 the main facilities were built. Several dozens of wells were drilled and their depth varies between 60–497 m. Furthermore, on the field many hand‑drilled wells are located. Oil was produced through the 60 years with breaks. After the 2nd World War the facility was suddenly discarded due to political and economic reasons. As a result of inadequate operation, oil leakages can be observed. It causes an environmental pollution and a serious hazard. The remains were recognized and documented. A series of geochemical measurements were taken to indicate gas concentrations throughout the field. An analysis of the results showed significant concentrations of hydrocarbons in the soil. In order to mitigate the threat, a proper plug and abandonment operation of the deepest well was designed. Project executors hope to attract the attention of industry and academia to the problems depleted reservoirs that were not correctly abandoned.

Coal beds could contain various amount of methane. This attribute might be dangerous in shafts or quarrying. Among other things, the works in the coal beds, including drilling, potentially there is a risk of exceeding the methane lower explosive limit. But on the other hand it is a source of unconventional hydrocarbon accumulations. In this paper geochemical characteristic of organic matter of tertiary brown coal from central part of Poland were performed. Geochemical surveys helps to know about genesis of methane from study area. The analysed samples contain various quantity of organic carbon, from 20,74 to 71.93 wt. %. Lignite from examine samples have weak hydrocarbon potential. In tertiary sediments prevails III type of kerogen with admixture of II type of kerogen. The thermal maturity of the tertiary organic matter changes within the interval from 354 to 419 in Tmax scale. Organic matter is immature. The composition of bitumens is different in various part of study area. Elemental analysis confirm that brown coal was comprised mostly by humic-group macerals. Coal samples contain methane with mixed genesis.

Opis:
The Middle–Upper Jurassic sediments of the Niedzica-Podmajerz section was the subject of integrated study, including sedimentological, geochemical and stratigraphic analysis. The studied section is located in the Pieniny Klippen Belt area and belongs to the Niedzica unit. The section is characterized by continuous exposure of Jurassic carbonate-silica deposits extending from the Bajocian to Kimmeridgian, showing a transition from crinoidal limestones representing typical neritic facies to pelagic facies, i.e. radiolarites and red nodular limestones. The following lithofacies were distinguished in the studied section: grey crinoidal limestones (Smolegowa Limestone Formation), red crinoidal limestones (Krupianka Limestone Formation), red nodular limestones (Niedzica Limestone Formation), radiolarites (Czajakowa Radiolarites Formation) and red nodular limestones (Czorsztyn Limestone Formation). Based on a multidisciplinary dataset, the palaeoenvironmental interpretation was proposed. The results of magnetic susceptibility (MS), gamma-ray spectrometric measurements, CaCO3 content, δ13C analysis and concentrations of major and trace elements data indicate a rapid change in sedimentary conditions at the Callovian–Oxfordian boundary. Variations of δ13C from the Niedzica-Podmajerz indicate global changes in biological productivity, ocean circulation and burial of organic matter in the Tethys area, analogies of which can be found, for example, in Fatricum Domain in the Tatra Mountains. Records of MS, elements K, Th, Al, as well as Ti/Al and Zr/Al proxies indicate probably a period of increased (Lower Bathonian–Upper Callovian) and decreased (Oxfordian) detrital supply to the sedimentary basin. This process was most likely climatically controlled. The CaCO3 results indicate the variability of carbonate production. The lowest values of calcium carbonate (<20%) in Niedzica-Podmajerz section was recorded in the middle part of the radiolarites of the Czajakowa Radiolarite Formation, corresponding to the phase of the carbonate crisis. From this interval, the amount of carbonates in the rocks gradually increases, indicating a return to carbonate sedimentation. These fluctuations probably reflect changes in the position of the ACD and CCD.

Opis:
The elemental composition of terrigenous sediments is extremely important for interpreting the depositional conditions of sedimentary basins especially when traditional data are not available or insufficient. For the first time in the published literature, the elemental composition of the Lower Cretaceous Weald Basin (south-east England) is presented via X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Spectral Gamma-ray (SGR) methods. The concentrations of Zr, Cr, Ni, Rb, and Sr in varying quantities suggest that the sediments may have been sourced from a stable craton while the enriched redox-sensitive elements such as Mo and Co confirm the presence of anoxic and reducing conditions at the sites of deposition. The spectral gamma-ray data show that the sandstone facies are more radioactive than the adjacent mudstone and shale and this trend is consistent with a freshwater origin. The higher quantity of thorium in relation to uranium indicates humid and hot palaeoclimatic conditions at the source areas that favoured intense weathering. The results of these analyses reinforce the importance of the geochemistry of sedimentary rocks as useful tools for understanding the depositional conditions of sedimentary basins.

This work aimed to evaluate groundwater potability for the population through geochemical assessment methods on the example of aquifers in Krasnodar city. In 2016 and 2019, on the territory of Krasnodar city (Krasnodar region, Russian Federation), a detailed geochemical analysis of groundwater quality was performed based on a total of 6000 samples, 3000 samples per each year. Samples were taken from 30 wells located at depths of up to 450 m in the layers of Anthropogen and Neogene stages. Quantitative analysis of wells according to the average water quality parameters showed that in 15 wells, the water condition met the MAC (maximum allowable concentration) standards in all layers. Water abundance between the layers of the Quaternary and Cimmerian stages is seven times as different (p ≤ 0.001) towards the latter, the hardness between the same horizons is ten times as different (p ≤ 0.001) towards the Quaternary stage and three times as different (p ≤ 0.05) in terms of solid residue. Thus, the water hardness and water abundance index vary significantly between the vertical layers. A strong positive correlation between the solid residue and the hardness values (Pearson correlation 0.93, p ≤ 0.05), and a negative correlation between water abundance and solid residue values (Pearson correlation - 0.83, p ≤ 0.05), as well as between the hardness and water abundance values (Pearson correlation - 0.81, p ≤ 0.05) was recorded. These findings can be used for regions with similar deposits of rocks and aquifers.

Opis:
This research is focused on a small kettle hole located within the Morąg moraines (Iława Lake District, NE Poland). The study objective was to determine the impact of palaeoenvironmental changes in sedimentation and properties of sediments filling the bottom of the kettle hole. Sedimentological, geochemical, and palaeobotanical studies enabled us to distinguish several development phases of the kettle hole, and cluster analysis performed on physicochemical data yielded seven local geochemical zones (JuI/I to JuI/VII). The beginning of biogenic sedimentation in the conditions of a small water body, functioning in the Late Glacial period (4.20–4.10 m), was determined on the basis of palaeobotanical research. Sediments deposited in the lake during its further evolution were rich in microelements such as Ca, Na, Mg, and K, and to a smaller extent – Fe and Mn (JuI/I–III local geochemical zones). The Late Glacial lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of very silty, pollen-free gyttja, with a stratigraphic hiatus (JuI/IV, 3.40–3.20 m). The sediments were enriched with SiO2ter, which indicates an increased rate of slope erosion, and concretions of Fe-Mn occurring below this layer (JuIII) provide evidence for lowering of the water level and even desiccation. In the Holocene, the lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of coarse detrital gyttja (3.20–2.60 m). Palaeobotanical data indicate that the next group of sediments were deposited in the Late Subboreal and Subatlantic periods (2.60–0.0 cm, JuI/V–VII; sedge peat). Their properties were varied and related to hydrologic conditions, limited denudation, and vegetation succession. There was also a significant change in the trophic conditions of the water and consequently in the sediments of the kettle hole, which changed during the lacustrine period from basic to acid, and strongly acid in the surface layer. This reaction may be related to a change in the water regime as well as to human impact in the environment, which led to the colonization of the peat bog by Sphagnum moss.

The geochemical analysis of biogenic sediments was used to reconstruct environmental conditions and the impact of human activity from a small mire geo-system in the Sandomierz Basin (Poland SE). Changes in the nature of selected geochemical indicators show a significant impact on the transformation of the mire during the early stages of human activity. It is reflected in the geochemical record by means of a high proportion of heavy metals – cadmium, lead and copper. Evident variability of main geochemical components concentration is also visible in a vertical record of analysed cores. This is a consequence of the sedimentary basin asymmetric configuration and the ensuing variable biogenic sedimentary succession.

W pracy wykorzystano analizę geochemiczną osadów biogenicznych z małego geosystemu torfowiskowego in the Sandomierz Basin (Poland SE) do odtworzenia warunków środowiskowych i wpływu działalności człowieka.

The early medieval fortified settlement in Bonikowo was located within the wetland, in very marshy backwaters of the middle Obra river (the Obra Marshy Meadows). The Bonikowo stronghold belonged to a system of numerous small castles of southern Great Poland which had been formed in the period before the rise of the centralized state. This was a concave fortified settlement, consisting of many parts, with three ramparts, originating in different phases of the Middle Ages, as was confirmed by dating of archaeological pottery findings and by absolute dating. The castle was built with material from the sandy sediment of the Obra river backwaters. Geochemical analysis shows the length and intensity of the settlement and economic use of internal zones of the ramparts, especially of the internal zones within the rampart II, considered the oldest.

Opis:
Concentrations of a large set of major and trace elements, and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope ratios were measured in Holocene sediments cored in the western deep Black Sea in order to unravel: (1) the controls of element enrichment, and (2) sources of the detrital component. The transition of the basin from oxic to euxinic resulted in enrichment or depletion in a number of elements in the deep-sea sediments. Authigenic Fe enrichment appears to depend on the amount of Fe mobilized from the sediment through the benthic redox shuttle mechanism and free H2S in the water column (degree of “euxinization”). Manganese enrichment is controlled by diagenetic reactions within the sediment: the dissolution of Mn minerals, Mn2+ diffusion upward and reprecipitation. Barium enrichment is also controlled by diagenetic reactions, sulfate reduction and methanogenesis, that take place above and below the sulfate-methane transition, respectively. The major part of V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Mo, Cd and Sb is inferred to have co-precipitated with Fe in the euxinic deep waters and to have been incorporated into authigenic Fe-sulfides. Basin reservoir effect additionally influences the Mo enrichment. The U enrichment is interpreted to have a different origin in the two organic-rich stratigraphic units (II and I). It is inferred to be: (i) at the expense of the U inventory of the deepwater pool and a result of inorganic reduction of U at euxinic conditions in the lower Unit II; and (ii) at the expense of the U inventory of the surface water pool and a result of biogenic uptake and transfer to the sediment by the plankton in the upper Unit I. The high field strength elements are closely linked to the detrital component and their depletion in the organic-rich sediments reflects a dilution of the detrital component by the biogenic one. The enrichments of REE, Sn and Th are likely controlled by adsorption on clay minerals. Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions of the alumino-silicate component of the studied sediments are relatively uniform. They are most likely controlled by riverine suspended matter supplied mainly in the NW Black Sea (Danube Delta) and transported southward by marine currents, and to a lesser degree by suspended matter from the small rivers draining SE Bulgaria and NW Turkey. Wind-blown dust from the Sahara Desert appears to have a minor contribution to the alumino-silicate component of the sediments. The slight shift in the Pb isotopes in Unit I upper layers is possibly caused by the addition of anthropogenic Pb.

Opis:
There are two arsenical pyrite (As-FeS2mineralization zones cropping out in the Podwiśniówka and Wiśniówka Duża quarries where quartzites and quartzitic sandstones have been extracted for over a century. A large amount of pyrite in the Wiśniówka siliciclastics is unusual in the hard rock mining throughout the world. The pyritiferous beds contain a variety of REE-bearing minerals, including a crandallite series of aluminum-phosphate-sulfate (APS) minerals, e.g., predominant goyazite SrHAl3[(PO4)2(OH)6] with subordinate gorceixite BaHAl3[(PO4)2(OH)6] and very occasional crandallite CaHAl3[(PO4)2(OH)6]. By contrast, the other REE-phosphate minerals, e.g., xenotime YPO4, bur particularly monazite CePO4 occur in a lesser amount. Goyazite prevails somewhat in the Podwiśniówka beds whereas xenotime in the Wiśniówka Duża beds. Of the other REE-bearing minerals, bastnäsite REECO3(F,OH), florencite (REE)Al3(PO4)2(OH)6 and synchysite CaCe[CO3]2F occur in trace amounts. Interestingly, the quite common phosphate minerals, i.e., wavellite (Al.3[(OH,F)3|(PO4)2]×5H2O and variscite Al[PO4]×2H2O) are depleted in REEs with only Ce attaining 0.09 wt.% as documented by an electron-probe microanalysis. In contrast to quartzites/quartzitic sandstones, carbonaceous clayey-silty shales and bentonites/tuffites are distinctly enriched in REE-bearing minerals. This diversity is also mirrored in the mean total REE concentrations varying from 204 to 314 mg/kg, in clayey-silty shales and bentonites, attaining 457 mg/kg in some Podwiśniówka shale beds. Results of this and the previous petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical studies have indicated that REE-bearing minerals formed generally along with As-rich pyrite, nacrite/dickite and probably TiO2 polymorphs as a result of multiphase hydrothermal vent activity that took place in the Wiśniówka Late Cambrian sedimentary basin. This evidence is also backed up by the values of LREENASC/HREENASC (1.44–1.75) and Eu/EuNASC (1.24–1.30) coefficients in the clayey-silty shales. This positive Eu anomaly (31.20) points to the formation of REE-bearing minerals in a reducing environment.

This paper presents the results of geochemical analysis performed for the more-than-10-m-long core of sediments derived from Lake Nowowarpieńskie. Contrary to what its geographical name would suggest, it is in fact a peripheral bay  of the Szczecin Lagoon (NW Poland). A characteristic feature of the sedimentary cover of this water body is the several-metre-thick layer of lacustrine chalk, which is unique in the lithology of the sediments of today's Szczecin Lagoon. This sediment has been analysed using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. The chalk sediment from Lake Nowowarpieńskie is of chemical origin, bearing no fragments of vascular plants, but only traces of C-org in the form of small plant remains. The analysis of individual crystals using the EDS method also show Ca contents of over 99%. SEM images reveal that the sediment is characterised by a loose, disordered pack-ing of individual crystals, often combined to form aggregates with a tabular structure. The individual calcite grains are usually a few micrometres in size, while developed ones are mostly hypidiomorphic and show signs of corrosion. The sedimentation of the lacustrine chalk indicates that the post-glacial natural development of this part of what today constitutes Szczecin Lagoon differed from that of the rest of the lagoon. This sediment was deposited in a shallow but fertile isolated lake. The full profile of sediments from Lake Nowowarpieńskie reveals its distinct bipartite character, indicating two main stages of its evolution: carbonate and post-carbonate. In the first, the water body showed similarities to the neighbouring lakes of the Wkrzańska Plain. Its evolution was driven by climatic factors. The second stage was initiated by a palaeohydrological factor – Littorina transgression, which resulted in the lake being included into the hydrological system of the Szczecin Lagoon.

Two sediment cores from the Mecklenburg Bay and Arkona Basin were analysed in terms of their geochemical composition and stratigraphy. The main stages of the Baltic Sea evolution – Baltic Ice Lake, Ancylus Lake, and Littorina Sea – were identified in both analysed cores. The most pronounced period was the transition between the Ancylus Lake and the Littorina Sea. The character of the initial stage of the Littorina Sea was clearly defined in the Mecklenburg Bay sediments and is marked by a stepwise increase in loss on ignition and contents of biogenic silica, calcium, magnesium, iron, and strontium. The record of the onset of the Littorina Sea in the Arkona Basin sediments is marked by an abrupt change of the geochemical parameters. The age of the initial Littorina Sea in the Mecklenburg Bay was estimated at about 8200 cal years BP and was probably older than the transgression within the Arkona Basin.

Intensywność i kierunek procesów w skorupie ziemskiej doprowadziły do powstania struktury depresyjnej, w której sedymentowały osady. W strukturze (basenie) formacja solonośna z solami potasowymi sedymentowała w środkowym i górnym Famenie.

Opis:
Geochemical analysis of the 50 samples of the Middle Triassic black shales (organic carbon-rich siltstones) has been carried out. The black shale samples (up to 4.92 % TOC) have been collected in the stratotype profile of the Bravaisberget Formation, west Spitsbergen. In the examined profile, the black shales occur exclusively in the Passhatten Member (the lower and middle interval of the Bravaisberget Formation). Black shale samples have been analyzed in respect to degree of pyritization (DOP), isotopic composition of pyrite sulphur (34S) and organic carbon content (TOC). The main goal of the research was to examine a degree of oxygenation and dynamics of a sea-bottom environment. DOPvalues from lower section of the Passhatten Member show wide variation, ranging from 0.29 to 0.92. In upper section of the member, the obtained DOPvalues show narrower range of variations, from 0.77 to 0.98.Wide variations of DOPwere caused by temporary coexistence of oxic and anoxic bottom currents. In turn, narrow DOP variations indicate predominance of stratified water and anoxic bottom currents. DOP/34S and DOP/TOC ratios imply that syngenetic and early diagenetic pyrite precipitation during accumulation of the lower section of the Passhatten Member was controlled by availability of organic carbon and reactive iron, whereas accumulation of the member's upper section was controlled exclusively by availability of reactive iron.

Opis:
Jest on umiarkowany w segmencie polskim i słowackim jednostki dukielskiej i nieco wyższy w jednostkach magurskiej i borysławsko-pokuckiej.
Studies were conducted in the Outer Carpathians in the area of the Western and Eastern Carpathians in the borderland of Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. The character of anoxic facies in the Carpathians in the Polish and Slovak area within different tectonic units - from the Dukla unit through the Silesian, Boryslav-Pokuttia, Skole and the Węglówka units was analyzed. The analysis was based on geochemical parameters and indices from the following methods: Rock-Eval analysis, gas chromatography of n-alkanes and isoprenoids, isotopic determinations of carbon isotopes (in organic matter). Diversity of parameters has been stated. In case of bitumens, the TOC content changes within the interval from 0.62% to over 8.7wt %, while the highest values characterize the facies of the Skole unit. The potential maturity of the sediments is very high in the anoxic facies of the Silesian and Dukla units and in the Central Carpathian Depression (CDK). Residual petroleum potential (S2) of the dispersed organic matter varies from 0.26/1.20 mg HC/g rock in the Lower Cretaceous strata of the Bystre Slice to 16.50/36.59 mg HC/g rock in the Skole unit (Bandrów). It is moderate in the Polish and Slovak segments in the Dukla unit and slightly higher in the Magura and Boryslav-Pokuttia units. The aliphatic fraction dominates in all the studied rocks, while the aliphatic composition of bitumens is relatively homogeneous. The n-alkane distribution is variable in the rocks and solid bitumens. Three groups of bitumens may be distinguished with a variable domination of short-chain n-alkanes and/or long-chain n-alkanes. In general, pristane predominates over phytane, while the isoprenoids often show a lower content in comparison to the adjacent C17 and C18 n-alkanes. The pristine - phytane ratio oscillates from 18.01 (Central Carpathian Depression – CDK) through 13.36 (Węglówka unit) to 6.36 (Silesian unit), being close to one in other samples. Among the aromatic hydrocarbons, phenantrene predominates together with its methyl and di-metlyl derivatives. The d13CPDB data for hydrocarbons show some variability for different fractions. For bitumens, they change from –24.9 to –28.9‰. Thermal maturity of kerogen (mixed type from II to III) varies from the immature phase (Skole and Boryslav-Pokuttia units) through mature in the Silesian and Dukla units up to the early gas phase in the tectonic mélange and its neighbourhood.

Opis:
The Dehe-Bala intrusion is one of the remarkable intrusions of granodiorite rocks with I-type affinity and abundant mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) in the Buin Zahra area, Qazvin, Iran. The MMEs, composed of diorite and quartz-monzodiorites, are haphazardly widespread in the granodiorites. The Dehe-Bala Granodiorites (DBG) usually are characterized by high contents of SiO2 (64.2-66.9), Na2O (3-3.23), K2O (3.49-4), Mg# 4.84 and Th/Ta ratio (≈7.9). In comparison to the DBG, the MMEs can be distinguished by their lower value of SiO2 (52.8-58.2), K2O (1.4-3.8) and higher Mg# (0.4-0.46). All these characteristics show a different composition of the DBG and MMEs, more importantly, can argue in favor of a magma mixing/mingling origin in the DBG. The enrichment in total REEs and HFSEs in the MMEs clearly reflects a marked diffusional process from the felsic to mafic magma that could have been achieved by chemical exchange during the magma mixing/mingling process. The fractal dimensions (Dbox) of MMEs differ from 1.14 to 1.29 with the highest frequency at 1.29. The textural heterogeneity and geochemical features combined with high Dbox values in the MMEs compared with the DBG show lower degrees of mixing/mingling between mantle-derived mafic and lower crust-derived felsic magmas.

Opis:
One of the most up to date scientific problems in recognition of karst processes is quantitave evaluation their activity. Basic and distinctive indicators that describe karst processes activity are intensity and magnitude of chemical denudation (Aksiom S.D., 2002). Not only a tool for describing changes taking place in the observed hydrogeological system will be presented in the paper but tools that allow to predict changes that may take place on the spur of the natural and anthropogenic factors. Only a few methods widely used in hydrogeology are also used in geography. In this paper authors present basis of geochemical modeling that can be widely used. Geochemical modeling can be divided into two main issues: Measurement, assessment and generalization of kinetic and thermodynamic data for solid phases (e.g. minerals), gases and solutions; Use of above data in numerical algorithms describing natural and anthropogenicly changed systems of interaction between water and matrix (Macioszczyk, Dobrzyński, 2006). The practical aspects of geochemical modeling concentrate mainly on creating geochemical models of the environment and its changes. Geochemical modeling has been recently widely used for describing chemical composition of groundwater as well as factors and processes shaping it. A geochemical model is a tool that allow for understanding hydrogeochemical processes taking place in the environment. It is a basis for further analysis of system`s susceptibility for modifications conducted by human as well as it might be an element of the forecast of the risk of environment contamination. The main advantage of geochemical modeling is simplicity of received data interpretation, possibility of groundwater chemistry origin interpretation, predicting chemistry modifications and also forecasting changes in water quality. Geochemical models can be divided into three main groups: Speciation model – it doesn`t include any information about temporal or spatial distribution of processes, it only describe the effect of water – rock – gases interaction in a single point of hydrogeological space; Reaction path model – it delivers information about succeeding changes of the hydrogeological system (spatial variability) that take place as an effect of providing a load of mass and/or energy. The time effect can be modeled with use of reaction rate constant; Reactive transport model – it include data describing temporal and spatial variability of chemical reactions in the system.

Do analiz statystycznych wykorzystano literaturowe dane z analiz składu chemicznego i izotopowego gazów ziemnych. Wyniki zawierały skład chemiczny gazów ziemnych oraz skład izotopowy. Zastosowano algorytmy tzw. nienadzorowanego uczenia maszynowego do przeprowadzenia analizy skupień.
In petroleum geology, statistical methods are widely used in petrography, petrophysics, geochemistry, geomechanics, well log analysis and seismics, and cluster analysis is important for rock classification – determination of zones with certain properties, e.g., source or reservoir. This paper presents the use of the R language for statistical analysis, including cluster analysis, of large sets of diverse geochemical data. Literature data from analyses of chemical and isotopic composition of natural gases were used for statistical analyses. The results included the chemical composition of the natural gases and the isotopic composition. So-called unsupervised machine learning algorithms were used to perform the cluster analysis. Clustering was performed using two methods: k-means and hierarchical. A two-dimensional graph (function fviz_cluster) can be used to illustrate the results of the k-means clustering. The dimensions in the graph are the result of principal component analysis (PCA) and are a linear combination of the features (columns in the table). The result of hierarchical clustering is a graph called a dendrogram. The paper additionally presents box plots and histograms as well as a correlation matrix containing Pearson correlation coefficients. All work was completed using the programming language R. The R language, using the RStudio software, is a very convenient and fast tool for statistical data analysis. Obtaining the above-mentioned graphs, tables and data is quick and relatively easy, using the R language. The results of the analyses of the composition of the gas appear to have little variation. Nevertheless, thanks to k-means and hierarchical algorithms, it was possible to group the geochemical data into clearly separable groups. Both the isotopic composition values and the chemical composition make it possible to delineate groups that would not otherwise be noticeable.

Opis:
Morphostructural, hydrogeological and hydrochemical approaches were applied to Hammamet plain and its surrounding mountains in the eastern part of Algeria to characterize the groundwater system and its potential for exploitation. The Essen and Troubia Mountains form the natural boundaries of Hammamet plain. The objective of this study is to utilize remote sensing techniques combined with structural analysis, hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry to identify the potential fracture zones for groundwater in the strongly fractured and karstified deep aquifers. The delineated zones of potential groundwater resources are verified by detailed hydrogeological field surveys. From a hydrogeological point of view, these two mountains, constitute a unit limited by faults oriented ENE-WSW, NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW. Specifically, fractures of the latter two directions influence the compartmentalization and the hydrogeological functioning of this unit. According to the degree of fracturing and/or karstification, two basic types of aquiferous behaviour have been distinguished: fissured aquifer (Essen Mountain and Troubia Mountain), and porous aquifer (Hammamet plain). The study of the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater samples shows that the majority of samples are mainly of HCO3 and Ca2+ water type. The ionic speciation and mineral dissolution/precipitation was calculated with the PHREEQC software. The chemical composition of the water is influenced by the dissolution and/or precipitation processes during the water–rock interaction and by the cationic exchange reactions between groundwater and alluvial sediments. The high content of CO2 in the water samples suggests that they circulate in a geochemical open system. The isotopic analysis of some groundwater samples shows a similarity with the meteoric waters, which reflect their short residence time and a low evaporation of the infiltrated water.
Celem scharakteryzowania systemu wód podziemnych oraz możliwości eksploatacji tych wód zastosowano metody morfologiczne, hydrogeologiczne i hydrochemiczne na równinie Hammamet i otaczających ją górach we wschodniej części Algierii. Góry Essen i Troubia tworzą naturalną granicę równiny Hammamet. Przedmiotem badań była identyfikacja możliwych stref szczelin w silnie spękanym i głębokim, krasowym poziomie wodonośnym z zastosowaniem technik teledetekcji w połączeniu z analizą strukturalną, hydrogeologią i hydrogeochemią.

Opis:
In the autumn of 2014 were performed the geochemical research of the soil gases composition in the area of selected oil mine in southern Poland. For a total were carried out of 75 individual analysis at 55 measuring points. The average depth of the measuring point was about 84.4 cm. The grid selection of the measurement points was made ad hoc, taking into account arrangement the existing mine installation and the location of the abandon wells. Finally, geochemical studies were performed in the vicinity of 6 exploitation wells (1 liquidated, one flowing well and 4 pumped periodically), on the route of transmission pipelines and in the area of group centers. The free choice of the measurement point location was limited by buildings and agricultural crops. In the area of the analyzed deposit were drilled more than 100 wells, most of which were liquidated and usually did not stay after them no trace on the surface. Based on the results of the geochemical research of the soil gases composition there was determined the spatial distribution of the methane concentration in the soil in the nodes of a regular grid by geostatistical methods using kriging. On this bases there were developed the maps of the methane concentration. Generally, on the oil deposit site there were detected two areas with the increased methane concentration in the ground. The distribution of the methane concentration in soil on the first one shows the installation leak in the vicinity of several wells. In the second much smaller area it may suspect that the pipeline transporting crude oil to the group centre is leaky. In the research area are vast cultivated fields of high oxygenation and small wet ground. There are no permanently wetlands areas. This means that in soil occur at most aerobic rot and decay processes, resulting in the production of carbon dioxide but not methane. There is no reason to assume that occur also the natural anaerobic putrefaction processes. Therefore, the detected abnormally high methane concentration in the ground is not of biological origin. To confirm formulated hypothesis should also be do the chromatographic research of C14 carbon isotope content in the taken methane samples from the soil to determine his age and confront it with the age of methane produced from the deposit. In general, the results analysis of the geochemical research of the soil gases composition leads to the conclusion that the rock mass is hermetic from the geological point of view, but there are occasional leaks in the production system of several wells and transmission pipeline, that can remove.

This geochemical study aims to resolve genesis of precipitation spots on the walls on the Nydeggbrücke in Bern, Switzerland. The bridge is composed of Jurassic limestone and dolomites and coated on both sides with Miocene flysch sandstone. As a result of infiltration of aqueous solutions derived directly from the road embankment into the sandstone, sulfate encrustation on the walls of sandstone has been formed. The study of these precipitates using optical and electron microscopy clearly shows dominant sulfate phases are gypsum (calcium sulfate), mirabilite (sodium hydrated sulfate) and polyhalite (potassium, calcium and magnesium sulfate). Impurities of Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb was encountered by ICP-MS analysis. Identified polymetallic mineralization is associated with the infrastructure of the bridge and the accumulation of pollution from vehicular traffic. This is also confirmed by sulfur and oxygen stable isotope analyses of sulfates.

Opis:
During the research, 71 groundwater samples were collected over a 300 km2 area of Tirana-Fushe Kuqe alluvial aquifer extension (central-western Albania) and subsequently analyzed for 11 parameters (pH, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, TH and TDS). Both geochemical conventional (Piper and Chadha diagrams) methods of groundwater classification and multivariate statistical (principal components analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA) methods were applied to the dataset to evidence the geochemical processes controlling groundwater geochemistry evaluation through the aquifer. The conventional geochemical methods revealed four (G1–G4) hydrochemical groups where the dominant group is G2 the samples of which are from unconfined to semiconfined recharge zone and the majority of them have Ca-Mg-HCO3 groundwater. Group G3 includes the samples from the confined coastal aquifer having Na-Cl groundwater. Group G1 includes three groundwater samples of Ca-Mg-SO4 from the central part of the aquifer, while group G4, the samples of which are spatially located between G3 and G2 zones, has Na-HCO3 groundwater. The first four components of the PCA account for 85.35% of the total variance. Component PC1 is characterized by very high positive loadings of TH, Ca2+, and Mg2+, suggesting the importance of dissolution processes in the aquifer recharge zone. Component PC2 is characterized by very high positive loadings in Na+, K+, and Cl-and moderate to high loadings of TDS, revealing the involvement of seawater intrusion and diffusion from clay layers. On the basis of their variable loadings, the first two components are defined as the “hardness” and “salinity”, respectively. The HCA produced four geochemically distinct clusters, C1–C4. The samples of cluster C1 are from the coastal confined aquifer and their groundwater belongs to the Na-Cl type. The samples from cluster C2 are located in the south and east recharge areas and most of them have Ca–Mg–HCO3 groundwater, while the samples from cluster C3, which are located in the northeastern recharge zone, have Mg-Ca–HCO3 groundwater. Finally, cluster C4 includes two groundwater subgroups having Na-Cl-HCO3 and Na-Mg-Cl-HCO3 groundwater in the vicinity of cluster C1 as well as Na-HCO3-Cl and Na-Mg-HCO3-Cl groundwater next to cluster C2 and C3.

Opis:
In this study, the heavy metal and radioactive properties of Iznik Lake were investigated. Concentration values of the first (Ag, Bi, Mo, Sn, Se, Zn, As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Pt and Sb) and second (Na, Mg, K, Ca, P, S, Fe, Al and Mn) group of elements in borehole 1 (BH-1) drilling did not show much variation from the top to the bottom of the drilling. Concentration values of the fi rst group of elements in borehole 2 (BH-2) drill samples decreased at higher levels of drilling. In addition, natural and anthropogenic radionuclides were measured by gamma spectrometry, and the results of environmental natural radioactivity of Iznik Lake and its surroundings were determined. In the measurement results, Ra-226 was found to be below the world average value at all locations. It is assumed that the determination of K-40 values above the average values was due to agricultural activities carried out intensively in the study area. Th-232 values were found to be below the world average value in drilling samples; Cs-137 values were below the background level in all samples. According to these results, the study area does not contain any unnatural radioactivity.

Opis:
Rich efflorescences of various Fe and Al sulphate mineral mixtures on coal seams of Bhanine, South Lebanon, were examined using (1) Powder X-Ray Diffraction (with the Rietveld method and unit cell parameters calculation), (2) Scanning Electron Microscopy with standardized Electron-Dispersive Spectroscopy system, and (3) Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy. The sulphates most likely originated from coal-contained pyrite to form Fe(II) sulphates (melanterite, rozenite, and the most common szomolnokite), followed by Fe3+-rich sulphates (coquimbite group, copiapite group) and Al sulphates (alunogen, tamarugite). The halotrichite group and minor voltaite, metavoltine, and possibly secondary rozenite and szomolnokite were the last species to be formed. Strong enrichment in Al in copiapites and coquimbites, common occurrence of aluminocoquimbite, and Al likely entering the structure of Fe(II) sulphates makefurther phenomena, during which the initial ferrous copiapites were oxidized in the presence of Al-rich solutions, not out of the question. The obtained unit cell parameters sometimes stand for threshold values in the literature-based ranges drawn, but the values are usually below the 2% discrepancy. The Bhanine sulphates bear relatively large amounts of Tl, Hg, and Co when compared to Coal Clarke and mean crustal abundancies, being also moderately enriched in Ni and As.

Opis:
Badania wykonano wzdłuż 11 profili przebiegających poprzecznie do rozciągłości fliszowych jednostek strukturalno-facjalnych. Ogółem pobrano 890 próbek gazu glebowego, w których określono stężenia węglowodorów gazowych i helu. Stężenia metanu, sumy wyższych alkanów, gazowych alkenów i helu dochodziły odpowiednio do 50% obj., 0.4% obj., 132 ppm i 52 ppm. Anomalne stężenia alkanów, przedstawione graficznie na tle głównych jednostek tektonicznych Karpat oraz udokumentowanych akumulacji złożowych, generalnie potwierdziły obecność tych ostatnich. Inne anomalie wskazują na możliwość występowania nieudokumentowanych dotąd, wgłębnych akumulacji węglowodorów.
The paper presents results of reconnaissance surface geochemical surveys carried out in the years 2007 and 2008 in the eastern Polish Carpathians and western Ukrainian Carpathians between the Carpathian Foredeep and Dukla Overthrust. The surveys intended to assess the possibility of occurrence of subsurface hydrocarbon accumulations in the area characterized by common occurrence of oil seeps at outcrops of beds, which had been intensely folded and deeply dissected by erosion. The surveys were conducted along 11 profiles. The profiles were running transversally to the strike of flysch structural-facies units. The geochemical surveys consisted in taking 890 soil-gas samples, in which concentrations of gaseous hydrocarbons and helium were determined. Concentrations of methane, higher alkanes, gaseous alkenes and helium reached to nearly 50 vol.%, 0.4 vol.%, 132 ppm and 52 ppm, respectively. The anomalous alkanes concentrations, graphically presented against the background of major Carpathian tectonic units and documented hydrocarbon deposits, have confirmed, in general, the existence of the deposits, whereas some of the concentrations have indicated possible occurrence of other, still undocumented subsurface hydrocarbon accumulations.

Opis:
The study was aimed at anthropogenization processes of the Kościan Plain. They are noticeable in local palynological diagrams (eg. at the archaeological site in Bruszczewo) as well as on settlement maps of the Polish Archaeological Record Project. The goal was to determine whether the processes were perceptible also in a regional scale, in deposits of the biggest water body in the examined area, located 15 km to the east from Bruszczewo. Anthropogenic participation in changes of plant cover is clearly visible in the local diagram from Bruszczewo. While compared with the mentioned, anthropogenic influence in deposits of Wonieść Lake is rather inconspicuous. In the Neolithic and Early Bronze Periods, percentage of herbaceous plants (amount of grasses and herbs) maintained the level of 10%. Increase in NAP is marked not earlier than in the Roman Iron Age, and then from the Early Middle Ages until the present time (Dörfler, to be published soon). Comparison of palynological results to sedimentological analyses indicates that periods of increased values of CerealiaandPlantago lanceolataindices are correlated with inflow of mineral material to lacustrine water body. Larger fractions were observed there i.e. fine- and medium-grained sands, and even gravels as well as organic matter. In the geochemical record for the same periods, an increased percentage of trace elements can be visible (however their distinctive escalation is manifested not earlier than in the Middle Ages). These changes are accompanied by intensified eutrophication index (phosphorus percentage) as well as by occurrence of diatoms, which prefer eutrophic conditions.

Opis:
In order to determine geochemical processes affecting chemical composition of groundwater in the Gliwice-Łabędy well-field area two research methods were applied. Chemical analysis allowed us to assess the quality of groundwater in the Triassic karst-fractured-porous aquifer of the southwestern part of the major groundwater basin no. 330. The chemical composition of groundwater is distinguished by spatial heterogeneity highlighted by higher mineralization and concentrations of individual ions in the western area. In addition, all samples collected in 2016 were analyzed for the δ34 and δ18 to identify sources of sulfates in the waters examined. The study revealed a different origin of these ions depending on location of the wells sampled. The results of chemical analysis and archival data allowed for application of geochemical modeling in identification ofprocesses taking part in groundwater chemistry evolution. Simulations of processes controlling water chemistry within the Triassic aquifer were conducted using The Geochemist’s Workbench 10.0.6. The examined processes encompassed dissolution of minerals forming the carbonate aquifer and Miocene evaporates overlying the Triassic aquifer as well as mixing ofgroundwater and surface water.

Opis:
This study presents the determination of the content of selected metals (Ba, Ca, Fe, Nb, Rb, Sr, Y, Zn, and Zr) in postglacial deposits from two glacial valleys (Ebbadalen and Elsadalen) in the Petunia Bay (southern Spitsbergen). The aim of the research was to experimentally check the usefulness of the handheld energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technique in the study of samples from the polar zone, before performing the future field tests. Deposit analyses were performed (in parallel) with two handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometers from different manufacturers, to investigate the accuracy and reliability of the instruments. The statistical analysis of the results indicated that the measurements carried out with two spectrometers were statistically significantly different, which was probably due to the different calibration characteristics used by the manufacturers. However, the analysis of the spatial distribution of element concentrations using Geographic Information System tools showed that the distribution maps of elements concentrations were similar regardless of the spectrometer used in the analyses.

Opis:
The sedimentological, geochemical and diatomological research into the core taken from the fossil lake located in the glacial channel of Samica river prove the increasing anthropogenization of the landscape in the microregion surrounding the settlement in Bruszczewo. Anthropogenic indices of the Early Bronze Period in the palynological research include: high decline in the percentage of tree pollens caused by deforestation, indicators of grazing animals and farming as well as noticeable eutrophication of the lake (fungal spores and algae thriving on dung, droppings and excrement). In the sedimentological research, cultural layers correspond with accelerated mineral sedimentation in the basin (mediumand fine-grained sands). Each time it is preceded with organic sedimentation (from humus levels). Above results might signify the initiation of erosion-denudation processes in the catchment, settled and economically exploited by individual cultural groups. Results of the anthropogenic activity are visible also in the geochemical composition of the deposits. Cultural layers are marked with increased percentage of heavy metals, while the Cu : Pb : Zn ratios suggest their anthropogenic character. Additionally, the increase in phosphorus percentage confirms eutrophication of the basin in the settlement periods, that is in the Early and Late Bronze, and Early and Roman Iron Ages.

The Middle Don Culture, distributed within the Middle and Upper Don River area, is thought to be one of the earliest Eastern European Neolithic cultures, and is dated to the 6th–5th millennium BC. A group of Neolithic sites was found on the right shore of the Voronezh River, and has been named the “Dobroe sites”. The Dobroe 9 settlement is one of few sites in this region at which an assemblage of Middle Don Culture has been recorded in a clear stratigraphic position. The numerous faunal remains, ceramic complex and stone inventory found at this site allows for a reconstruction of the earliest stages of the Neolithic. The elaborated ceramic typology suggests a gradual transformation of the local culture. The particularity of sedimentation process and deposition of artefacts allowed a precise correlation of stone inventory types with early-Neolithic ceramic types. Preliminary reconstructions of palaeoclimate and episodes of human activity for this time period were implemented based on geochemical methods.
