Psychic sex consists of gender identity (self-estimation), gender role (objective estimation of the behavior) and psycho-sexual orientation (hetero-, bi- or homosexual). It was believed that gender identification depends on the socio-environmental influences such as rearing, learning and individual choice. It has become recently evident that endogenous hormones more than socio-environmental factors may create sexually dimorphic gender identification and role. Experiments revealed that transient action of sex steroids (testosterone or estradiol) during perinatal life is crucial for the development of male sexual behavior in adulthood. In human male testosterone, produced perinatally in adult-type amounts, may play a role in the masculinisation of the brain i.e. creation of physiological and behavioral differences versus the female brain. In patients with disturbances of sexual differentiation of external genitalia (intersexuality) gender identity is also affected. Female gender identity is associated with the presence of ovaries or the lack of gonads (agenesis/dysgenesis), i.e. lack of sex steroids in fetal life. Male gender identity appears in the presence of testicular tissue (presence of testosterone in fetal life) irrespective of karyotype and phenotype of the body. In genetic men with the absence of male genitalia due to aberrant function of the androgen receptor (46,XY women), gender identity depends on the severity of the disorder: female - in the complete form and female, male or ambivalent - in the partial. These indicate that androgens are involved in the creation of male gender identity, whereas a female identity develops in the absence of androgen action during sexual differentiation.

Autorka artykułu, stosując narzędzia krytyki feministycznej, analizuje zbiór opowiadań Angeli Carter Fireworks [fajerwerki]. Celem analiz jest odszyfrowanie ideologicznych założeń leżących u podstaw omawianego tekstu. Przyglądając się kobiecym postaciom występującym w poszczególnych opowiadaniach, autorka pokazuje, w jaki sposób za pomocą środków językowych Carter (de)konstruuje kobiecą tożsamość swoich bohaterek. Najpierw pozbawia je podmiotowości, by następnie przypisać im jej nowy wymiar. Analiza obejmuje m.in. przyglądanie się roli często używanych zaimków (on, ona, my), czasowników (zaufać, niszczyć) i rzeczowników (broń, rana). Ponadto autorka bada funkcje występujących w opowiadaniach dychotomii (podmiot/przedmiot, ja/inny) oraz symboli (wrak statku, ogień, lustro).

Based on qualitative in-depth interviews, I examine the use of genealogy with regard to the current historical moment for identities rooted in kin, race, class, gender, nation—and age. Drawing on the concept of “turning points” coined by Anselm Strauss, I explore moments that motivate the doing of family genealogy. First, I suggest that Strauss’s turning points may occur simultaneously and converge like vectors across time. Second, I argue that late middle-age lends itself to “identity extensions”, which I define as a reevaluation of self that acknowledges one or more of the following: the significance of extended kin to one’s identity; reverence for ancestors; a social responsibility to the future. Finally, I analyze how the current era informs a particular generation’s genealogical endeavors. I conceive of U.S. baby boomers’ genealogical projects as an expression of longing for connections in family lives and for a place in social history across the generations.

The aim of this paper was to present basic data about gender identity disorders and psychotic transsexual desires. Moreover, a case report was presented with pseudotranssexual symptoms in clinical picture. From time to time in scientist literature there are descriptions of diagnosis of psychotic disorders in persons previously diagnosed and treated as transsexuals, in whom the transsexual thinking disappears after using antipsychotic agents. Coexisting of transsexualism and schizophrenia causes a lot of doubt – it is observed in scientists opinions but also in diagnostic criteria DSM-IV and ICD-10. Moreover, delusions of sex change are probably more frequent than it is thought. It causes that in some cases the differential diagnosis of psychosis and gender identity disorders may be very difficult. Transsexuals treating on one hand is connected with expected effects but on the other hand with many serious, often irreversible health consequences (e.g. cardiovascular disease, risk of neoplasms development, infertility, consequences of surgical sex reassignment). That is why the differential diagnosis of transsexualism and schizophrenia should be made carefully and thoughtfully. The case report presents a patient suffering from schizophrenia for many years but pseudotranssexual ideations are still presented in clinical picture despite the treatment. The patient claimed to be a man, she wore male clothes and haircut and she used male name.
Celem pracy było przedstawienie podstawowych informacji dotyczących zaburzeń identyfikacji płciowej i psychotycznych pragnień transseksualnych. Ponadto zaprezentowano opis przypadku, w którym w obrazie klinicznym były obecne objawy pseudotransseksualne. Co pewien czas w literaturze naukowej pojawiają się doniesienia o rozpoznaniu zaburzeń psychotycznych u osób wcześniej zdiagnozowanych i leczonych jako transseksualiści, u których przekonania transseksualne zniknęły po zastosowaniu neuroleptyków. Współwystępowanie transseksualizmu i schizofrenii budzi wiele kontrowersji - jest to widoczne w opiniach naukowców, ale także w kryteriach diagnostycznych DSM-IV i ICD-10. Ponadto urojenia zmiany płci są prawdopodobnie częstsze niż się powszechnie uważa. W efekcie różnicowanie między psychozą i zaburzeniami identyfikacji płciowej może być w niektórych przypadkach bardzo trudne. Leczenie osób z rozpoznaniem transseksualizmu wiąże się nie tylko z efektami oczekiwanymi przez pacjenta, ale także z wieloma poważnymi, często nieodwracalnymi konsekwencjami zdrowotnymi (np. ryzyko rozwoju chorób układu krążenia, ryzyko rozwoju chorób nowotworowych, niepłodność, konsekwencje chirurgicznej zmiany płci). Z tego powodu diagnostyka różnicowa transseksualizmu, zaburzeń identyfikacji płciowej i schizofrenii powinna być prowadzona z dużą ostrożnością i rozwagą, aby zminimalizować ryzyko błędnego rozpoznania i nie narażać pacjenta na poważne konsekwencje stosowanej terapii. Opisano przypadek pacjentki od lat chorującej na schizofrenię, u której przewlekle utrzymywały się, ze zmiennym nasileniem, przekonania transseksualne mimo stosowanego leczenia przeciwpsychotycznego. Pacjentka twierdziła, że jest mężczyzną, nosiła męskie ubrania i fryzurę, a także przybrała męskie imię.

The author delivers a polemic with the paper published in 2007 by an unofficial international group of experts. The group’s aim is to send a message to all countries indicating extensive consequences of general guarantees provided by international human rights law, especially for the purpose of individual’s protection against sexual and gender discrimination. The author does not deny an individual right to define his/her private life without interference from the state or private parties. However he criticizes the group for its demand – made in a spirit of a modern interpretation of traditional human rights – for affirmation and the so called equality of individual’s decisions regarding sexuality in the areas where the state is obliged to guarantee „institutional space” or „institutional infrastructure” for privacy and the right to procreate. For instance, this relates to legal definition of a family. The author claims that definitions of „sexual orientation” and „gender identity” are not commonly recognized and understood in the same way. This thesis relates to the attributes of a private life which are impossible, or hardly possible, to be measured on the basis of external indications or declarations, the ones which individuals should be entitled not to disclose to the state or anyone else. Repeating the phrase „regardless of sexual orientation or gender identification” in the text of the paper implies public and political importance of these attributes. Whereas the author wonders whether the Yogyakarta Principles amount to a form of discrimination and improper political campaign using the individual's private life details without their consent.

Studies concerning the transformations of work have long stressed how flexible work has affected the lives and identity-setting processes of individuals. A salient aspect of the current changes consists of the gender issues concerning the reality of work and its representations. The aim of this paper is to stress gender-identitary positionings in the context of the stories of women and men in non-standard employment. The specific question that the article addresses is whether the increasing distance from the "standard" working model – concerning full-time long-term employment – is also being accompanied by a change in the prevailing gender models. In particular, the stories of women and men with non-standard and precarious jobs are presented, in order to show how, by means of narratives, gender models linked to precarious work are constructed.

This paper concerns three significant concepts in Maria Komornicka’s writings: body, spirit and gender. The first two are closely related to each other, thus initial paragraphs are devoted to them both. On the basis of these reflections, I draw some conclusion about the image of gender created by the poet. The notion of gender is analysed in terms of Young Poland discourse of gender and from the perspective of modern methodologies: feminist criticism as well as gender and queer studies. This paper aims at encouraging the reader to reinterpret M. Komornicka’s output with contemporary awareness.

W referacie został podjęty temat trzech kluczowych dla twórczości Marii Komornickiej zagadnień: ciała, ducha i płci. Dwa pierwsze tematy ściśle się ze sobą łączą, dlatego początkowe akapity dotyczą ich obu. Na podstawie tych refleksji wysnuto wnioski dotyczące obrazu płci w twórczości autorki. Pojęcie to jest analizowane zarówno w kontekście młodopolskiego dyskursu płci, jak i – z perspektywy nowoczesnych metodologii: krytyki feministycznej oraz studiów genderowych i queerowych. Referat ma na celu zachęcenie odbiorcy reinterpretowania dorobku Komornickiej z punktu widzenia współczesnej świadomości.

various national contexts are notably evident. In particular, non-egalitarian relationships, based on a patriarchal model, are still more present in less modernized contexts, such as Southern Europe. The increasing mobility within Europe coming along the process of unification, and the emergence of a European Collective Mental Space of Reference, through an intensification of material and symbolic exchange among the various countries and cultures, can stimulate reflexive processes of comparison and learning which can lead to significant transformations of identity. Mobility can represent a resource also for the (de-) re-construction of gender identity, activating a process of redefining traditional gender roles. In fact, encountering a context different from one’s own encourages deep processes of reflective questioning about “who” one is or wishes to be. The specific aim of this contribution is to ascertain under which conditions biographical experiences lived through in contexts and relationships more sensitive to gender equality, may actually activate a process of reshaping gender identity. This contribution addresses the issue through the analysis of three biographical-narrative interviews collected in Italy as part of the Euroidentities Project.
Płeć kulturowa jest szczególnie ważnym czynnikiem w kontekście kształtowania społeczno kulturowych aspektów tożsamości narodowej. Jest to kwestia widoczna zwłaszcza w społeczeństwach o modelu patriarchalnym, gdzie dominują relacje nieegalitarne, tak jak ma to miejsce w Europie Południowej. Problem ten coraz częściej poddawany jest refleksji, co prowadzi do znaczących transformacji tożsamości dzięki zintensyfikowaniu mobilności oraz dzięki procesom integracji i poszerzania europejskiej przestrzeni mentalnej. Mobilność może też inicjować proces (de) – (re) – konstrukcji tożsamości genderowej, redefinicję ról społecznych tradycyjnie przypisanych płci. Konfrontacja z odmiennymi wzorami może zmusić do stawiania pytania o własną tożsamość i konieczność jej przepracowania w wymiarze gender. W artykule na podstawie trzech narracji analizowane są takie okoliczności biograficzne, które mogą sprzyjać podjęciu wysiłku przepracowania własnej tożsamości.

The works of Simone de Beauvoir – an intellectual writer, an icon of feminism, and a representative of existentialism – explore the issues of gender identity and femininity. This article reflects on the writings of the author, which reveal the otherness of a woman who asserts her right to be present in culture. Her works also stress independence and autonomy. Beauvoir’s largely autobiographical texts express a search for identity by a woman with strong social and political commitments, who fought against injustice, intolerance, and wars, defending the rights of women and the human dignity. Through her critique of the bourgeoisie Beauvoir manifested her need for freedom, identified with her occupation. Aware of the limitations attributed to her sex, Beauvoir draws the portrait of a courageous woman with unrestricted identity. These works remain valid even outside the academic discourse owing to their constant emphasis on creation, independence, and individualism as well as revealing exposures. Self-creation provides an interesting perspective on today’s humanities and inspires women’s writing in the 21st century.

The author studies the reception of the theory of recognition, represented by Axel Honneth and Nancy Fraser, in Polish sociology. Even if this reception is at present not very wide, one can still identify at least three problem areas in which Polish sociologists work on similar issues and with similar approaches as those present in the theory of recognition. These areas are: studies on identity and agency, gender studies, and research on various dimensions of marginalization. The author argues that the theoretical perspective of the ‘struggles for recognition’ would be an interesting inspiration for the research of Polish sociologists and shows some indicators of the growing interest in that perspective in recent years

The article discusses the results of the qualitative research conducted in 2010 among female members of political youth organizations from Malopolska region. The case study embraces representatives of the organizations of various ideological orientations. The research project was based on fifteen in-depth biographical interviews and the use of Polish adaptation of Bem Sex Role Inventory. The results of the research indicate that, in accordance with the adopted hypothesis, the identity of female youth activists exhibit certain elements, which have traditionally been referred to as masculine.
Artykuł omawia wyniki badań jakościowych, przeprowadzonych w 2010 roku wśród członkiń małopolskich młodzieżowych organizacji politycznych. W studium przypadku wzięły udział przedstawicielki „młodzieżówek” o zróżnicowanym profilu ideologicznym. Projekt badawczy opierał się na piętnastu obszernych wywiadach biograficznych oraz zastosowaniu Inwentarza do oceny płci psychologicznej. Wyniki badań wskazują, że zgodnie z przyjętą hipotezą, młodzieżowe polityczki przejawiają elementy tożsamości tradycyjnie uznawanej za męską.

Opis:
The article analyzes the way in which the modern car-advertisement defines the identity of women as potential purchasers – to whom it is designed to get through. The research includes language and iconic instruments by which this type of advertisement aims to create a feminized market of products formerly recognized as traditionally masculine. The identification of the addressee of each publicity material might be subsumed under a set of stereotypes, thus enabling advertisers to get across their message using the code of addressee’s own values. The present paper concentrates on the linguistic specifity of the ads for high-tech goods (automobiles) targeting the feminine public and eventually points out their high degree of markedness according to the sex of addressees. Discourse analysis and a closer look at linguistic means appearing in French, Spanish and Polish automotive commercials both reveals a stereotyped woman’s image and shows how they happen to perpetutate it.
