Artykuł poświęcony jest herstorii mówionej w Polsce. Autoetnograficzny eksperyment – przedmiotem badań były doświadczenia związane z działalnością autorki na polu herstorii mówionej – posłużył za ramę doboru analizowanych projektów, jak i ich interpretacji z pozycji insiderki. Ich efektem jest model epistemologiczny herstorii mówionej, na który składają się trzy wzajemnie powiązane pola: badań feministycznych nad historią (kobiet/gender/queer), działalności edukacyjnej i politycznego projektu „wynalezienia feministycznej tradycji”.
The article focuses on oral herstory in Poland. An autoethnographic experiment – the subject of this research were experiences related to the author’s activity in the field of oral herstory – served as a framework for the selection of the analysed projects and their interpretation from the position of insiders. The outcome is an epistemological model of oral herstory consisting of three interrelated fields: feminist research into history (women/gender/queer), educational activities and a political project of “inventing (feminist) tradition”.

In the research on the Kalmar Union, the focus has mainly been on the kings as personae agens of the development. Even though one could not avoid treating Queen Margaret Valdemarsdatter as the founder of the Union, she has often been portrayed as genderless in political terms. Her successors, on the other hand, disappeared into historical obscurity or were mentioned more in passing sentences. Yet the queens had a considerable influence on the cohesion of the Union, just as Dorothea of Hohenzollern and Christine of Wettin played a role in restoring or maintaining the dynastic claims of the Oldenburg family. This article will therefore attempt to shed light on the political role of these princesses within the Kalmar Union and at the same time try to find reasons for the damnatio memoria of these queens.

Poniższy artykuł jest próbą uzupełnienia wiedzy na temat historii prostytucji w PRL. Służy temu analiza języka stosowanego przez milicjantów do opisu tego zjawiska w latach sześćdziesiątych XX w. Wykorzystane zostały milicyjne rozkazy, sprawozdania i notatki operacyjne, a także artykuły z milicyjnych czasopism („Służba MO”). Język milicyjnych opracowań okazuje się z jednej strony konserwatywny i zakorzeniony w tradycyjnych ramach postrzegania kobiecej seksualności, z drugiej strony jednak można analizować zmianę stosunku do problemu prostytucji wraz z kształtowaniem się dyskursu eksperckiego i profesjonalizacją działań milicyjnych sekcji ds. walki z nierządem. A problem that was supposed to disappear. The language of the Civic Militia documents concerning prostitution (1956–1969)History of prostitution is both a fascinating and a controversial topic. Yet, it still has not been thoroughly researched by historians, especially when it comes to the postwar history of Poland. The purpose of his article is to deepen our understanding of prostitution in the postwar Poland. To achieve that the author has analysed the language used by the Civic Militia (Polish: Milicja Obywatelska) to describe this phenomenon in the 1960s. Both the methods of historical source analysis and historical sociology are used to accomplish that. The sources include written orders, reports and notes produced by the Civic Militia officers and stored in the Police archives. Furthermore, the professional journals such as the Służba MO have been carefully researched to observe the development of a specific expert discourse on prostitution. The language of these texts turns out to be deeply rooted in the traditional vision of female sexuality. On the other hand, the sources show a visible change in the Civic Militia’s attitude towards prostitution and the professionalisation of its operations.

In contemporary history, the use of gendered treatments for women with mental health issues in the psychiatric secure estate is an issue of major concern in Great Britain. This paper examines women and gender in the psychiatric secure estate from a structural analysis drawing influence from Connell’s (1987) theoretical and conceptual work on hegemonic masculinity. Bio-psychological approaches have almost dominated academic discussion in relation to women’s incarceration and there is an reflexive need to develop other sociological frameworks on hegemonic masculinity because dominant bio-psychological models have failed to identify underlying configurations which combine to oppress women whilst simultaneously reproducing consequences of masculinity and power within institutional structures.

In this article, I examine the division of space in private and public spheres according to gender in the context of present-day Morocco. One of the many male-dominated spaces in Moroccan society is the Café culture, which in turn has implications for the male domination of the public sphere as a whole. The café not only occupy the actual part of an area but also creates a purely male territory where women are often not welcomed. Any women’s attempt to trespass into this territory is an exception that is in some cases can amount to cultural suicide. This article investigates parts of the history of Moroccan women’s attempt to reclaim public spaces, which can be said to coincide with the first phase of women movement. This article also attempts to create a link with the conceptualization of Harem as a historical and physical limitation to women’s access to public space. The article will trace this limitation back to the first Moroccan family law adopted in 1947, which only confirmed the traditional role of women and men. It will be argued that the last modification of the law in 2004 finally gave more rights to women.

Historia miast stanowi obszar badawczy, w którym dochodzi do szeregu interesujących zjawisk, wymykających się klasycznej historiografii. Jednym z nich są „biografie miast”, czyli sposób pisania o ich przeszłości naśladujący biografie postaci historycznych. Próby napisania biografii Łodzi podjął się Marcin Szymański. W artykule niniejszym dokonano oceny czy badacz związany z Instytutem Historii Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego dobrze wywiązał się z tego zadania. Przeanalizowano także miejsce książki M. Szymańskiego w literaturze poświęconej Łodzi i jej użyteczność jako źródła wiedzy o przeszłości miasta. Wskazano także mocne i słabe strony recenzowanej książki.
The urban history is a research area which eludes classical historiography and gives romm for many interesting phenomena. One of them are “biographies of cities”, which means the way of writing about about an urban history that imitates the biographies of famous people. Marcin Szymański made an attempt to write a biography of Łódź. This article assesses whether the researcher associated with the Institute of History at the University of Lodz has fulfilled this task well or not. Secondly, the place of M. Szymański’s book in the literature on Łódź and its usefulness as a source of knowledge about the city’s past were also analyzed here. Finally, strengths and weaknesses of the reviewed book were pointed out.

From False Universalism to Fetishisation of Difference. The History of the Warsaw Uprising and the Revisionist ‘Herstorical Turn’ This text is an attempt to connect the reflection on historiography and collective memory with the perspective of gender studies regarding historical writings on the Warsaw Uprising. The article tracks the various stages or ‘ideal types’ of professional and popular historiography and memory of the Warsaw Uprising seen from the perspective of the visibility and position of women: false universalism of a large part of professional historiography of the uprising and the resulting invisibility of women and their experience in historical works; compensatory works that fill the ‘white spots’ of classical historiography, treating the history of women as a mere addition to the history of World War II; as well as the recent ‘herstorical turn’, characterised by a growing interest in women and the distinctiveness of their experiences. The article concludes with a reflection on the theoretical and methodological pitfalls of the ‘herstorical turn’ and attempts to put the phenomenon in broader socio-political context of current cultural wars in Poland.

Gender and musical cultures – ethnomusicological and historical research in the perspective of cultural studies This article’s aim is to show the importance of the usage of gender category in the analyses of musical cultures. In order to do that, the author shows how crucial gender is in ethnomusicological theories, as well as in social hierarchy theories. All that to see gender as a part of the person’s identity, and also as a part of the whole experience of one’s life in the society. By closely analyzing circumstances that influence the life of a musician or any other individual we can understand their actions, their place in the musical culture, the reasons their work was seen the way it was. And those circumstances include gender experience. Gender, as one of many elements of social hierarchy, is to be seen as a factor that cannot be overlooked or ignored.

The article deals with Polish academic culture and the gender order prevalent therein in the former half of the twentieth century. The protagonists are a group of women who worked, in the circumstances of their time, on their postdoctoral (habilitation) theses. In my perception, this was the group that initiated the processes of change in the gender relations in the academic environment. The struggle for recognition in the world of science is exemplarily shown on the basis of the professional trajectories of Helena Polaczkówna and Helena Willmann-Grabowska.
