Opis:
This article reads Othello through the discourse of cultural materialism. To do so, the writer’s discourse therefore, becomes that of the hysterical discourse going against the dominant discourse of the work. Cultural materialism borrows the ideas of many critics in order to study canonical works against the grain. Thus, this article uses cultural materialism in order to read Othello against the grain. To read it so requires resisting or hystericising the dominant discourse and worldview and shifting sympathy. The gaze of Othello signifies how psychologically the white society looked at him and how the white society considered him. Othello is Moorish and hence an Arab in Europe, manifestly calling to mind all the multifaceted confrontations and conflicts of Self/Other in a framework of power struggle. He is a non-western protagonist whose wife, a European equals Othello’s tribe. Othello is an odd-one-out protagonist whose wife, Desdemona, is referred to as a pearl. This pearl calls for the fact that Othello be black in order to be inferior to her. The white Desdemona is an angel while the black Othello is a monster creating a binary opposition of angel and evil. The play depicts Othello as a loser and Desdemona as a winner making the audience identify with the winner. It makes Othello a type, the type of people who are horrible, treacherous, illogical, bestial and demonic. Desdemona also becomes a type, the type of people who are self, angelic and master. Practically Shakespeare lets Othello confess to his irrationality and inferiority.

The present article engages with the eponymous character of Oscar Wilde’s Salomé and focuses on her subversion of the patriarchal rules, and on her attempts at seducing the prophet Jokanaan. Wilde’s Salomé becomes “an erotic symbol of daring, transgression, and perversity” (Sloan 112). She wants to look at Jokanaan, as well as to be touched by him and openly states her great desire for him, using the imagery taken from the biblical Song of Songs to express her passion. Moreover, the Princess skillfully adopts and reverses the male gaze to manipulate others and go beyond the patriarchal constraints at Herod’s court. She becomes aware that the only way to reach her goals is to look actively and evade being a mere object of the male gaze. The article shows that the imagery employed in the eponymous character’s speeches contributes to her portrayal as a seductress, also accentuating her rebellion, and analyzes how the Princess transgresses the patriarchal constraints through appropriating the male gaze.

Many scholars today share a view of relational sociology as a processual-transactional approach whose basic tenet is the fluid, relativistic, contingent, transactional character of social relations. They invite sociologists to see our so-called objects (societies, institutions, social patterns, conflicts, social movements, social classes, etc.) in a processual way. In this contribution the author objects that relationalism offers a reductive vision of social reality, because it supports a flat social ontology rather than a stratified social ontology. Relationalism reduces relationships to pure flows, considering structures as purely contingent, while relational sociology attributes a structure to relationships and gives autonomy to structures, even if they are produced by processes. We have to distinguish between different orders of reality: the processual-interactional (relationalist) and the relational orders. To see all of this, it is necessary to assume a relational gaze that is only possible if a supra-functional, morphogenetic framework is adopted.

Opis:
This paper explores the patterns of the representation of Adivasis or aboriginals – known as ‘tribals’ in common parlance – in Malayalam language films. Film as a medium of representation is continuously engaged in constructing images and thus the process becomes an ideological enterprise contributing to the relentless practice of defining and redefining the society and its various components in terms of several binaries. The film industry of Kerala, a southern state of India, is affluent and more influential than other art forms and production. Though the tribal population of Kerala is around 400 thousand and they belong to as many as 43 subgroups, they are underrepresented in films and that too is in a stereotypical manner.  These groups are considered to be largely distinct with each tribal group identifying themselves with their own mythologies, tales of origin, and distinctive religious and ritualistic practices. This paper critically analyses the politics of representation using the example of tribals in Malayalam films as it  has evolved over the past decades and attempts to trace a whole gamut of aesthetic and ethical issues at stake.

Opis:
The article deals with the former palace of the von Zieten family and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Smolice, both located in southern Greater Poland, which are the most interesting neo-baroque architectural complexes in the early $20^{th}$ century in Poland. Both are the work of Wrocław-based company "Gaze & Böttcher", which has not yet been noticed by researchers. The buildings were founded by Helena von Zietzen née Woller, who financed these using the legacy of her father Samson Woller, a Lower Silesian industrialist. The palace was built in 1908-1911 in two or three phases as an extension of the previously existing small residence of Woller. The palace was built in 1908-1911 in several phases as an extension of the previously existing small Woller residence. At the same time, in the years 1907-1909, a large neo-baroque church with an axial composition on a cross plan was erected. Artists and craftsmen from Wrocław and Berlin took part in the decoration of the temple. The palace in Smolice was mentioned in the publications of such researchers as T.S. Jaroszewski and J. Skuratowicz, however it was mainly considered the work of unrecognized artists. The archival research carried out by the authors made it possible to find the original designs of the palace by renowned architectural firm "Gaze & Böttcher" from Wrocław, which changed this situation. The authors of the article, based on archival and bibliographic research as well as examination of autopsy objects, determined the authorship of the palace and the stages of its expansion, and in the case of the church, the authorship of individual elements of the interior. The architectural forms of the complex in Smolice were analyzed in the context of the achievements of "Gaze & Böttcher" company, which allowed us both to find common style features with other works of the Wrocław architectural office, and the distinctiveness determining the value of the buildings erected in Smolice.

Opis:
The use of visual content in applications of the digital computer has increased dramatically with the advent of the Internet and world wide web. Image coding standards such as JPEG 2000 have been developed to provide scalable and progressive compression of imagery. Advances in image and video analysis are also making human-computer interaction multi-modal rather than through the use of a keyboard or mouse. An eye tracker is an example input device that can be used by an application that displays visual content to adapt to the viewer. Many features are required of the format to facilitate this adaptation, and some are already part of image coding standards such as JPEG 2000. This paper presents a system incorporating the use of eye tracking and JPEG 2000, called Gaze-J2K, to allow a customised encoding of an image by using a user's gaze pattern. The gaze pattern is used to automatically determine and assign importance to fixated regions in an image, and subsequently constrain the encoding of the image to these regions.

Opis:
Two common channels through which humans communicate are speech and gaze. Eye gaze is an important mode of communication: it allows people tobetter understand each others’ intentions, desires, interests, and so on. The goal of this research is to develop a framework for gaze triggered events that can be executed on a robot and mobile devices and allows to perform experiments. We experimentally evaluate the framework and techniques for extracting gaze direction based on a robot-mounted camera or a mobile-device camera that are implemented in the framework. We investigate the impact of light on the accuracy of gaze estimation, and also how the overall accuracy depends on user eye and head movements. Our research shows that light intensity is important, and the placement of a light source is crucial. All the robot-mounted gaze detection modules we tested were found to be similar with regard to their accuracy. The framework we developed was tested in a human-robot interaction experiment involving a job-interview scenario. The flexible structure of this scenario allowed us to test different components of the framework in varied real-world scenarios, which was very useful for progressing towards our long-term research goal of designing intuitive gaze-based interfaces for human robot communication.

Eye-gaze tracking is an aspect of human-computer interaction still growing in popularity,. Tracking human gaze point can help control user interfaces and may help evaluate graphical user interfaces. At the same time professional eye-trackers are very expensive and thus unavailable for most of user interface researchers and small companies. The paper presents very effective, low cost, computer vision based, interactive eye-gaze tracking method. On contrary to other authors results the method achieves very high precision (about 1.5 deg horizontally and 2.5 deg vertically) at 20 fps performance, exploiting a simple HD web camera with reasonable environment restrictions. The paper describes the algorithms used in the eye-gaze tracking method and results of experimental tests, both static absolute point of interest estimation, and dynamic functional gaze controlled cursor steering.
