Opis:
Purpose: Application of plasma glow discharge to copper oxide nanostructure growth is studied. The simplicity of the proposed technique may be beneficial for the development of new plasma reactors for large-scale production of diverse metal oxide nanostructures. Design/methodology/approach: Copper sample was placed on anode of a setup designed to ignite plasma glow discharge. The proposed approach allows eliminating the negative effects of ion bombardment, like sputtering and generation of defects on a surface of the growing nanostructures, but preserves the advantages of thermal growth. The growth process was explained in terms of thermal processes interaction occurring on a surface of the anode with the glow discharge plasma. Findings: Plasma treatment resulted in generation of reach and diverse nanostructures that was confirmed by SEM images. Nanowire-like, flower-like, anemone-like nanostructures and nanodisks composed into the nanoassemblies are observed; the nanostructures are associated with microbabbles on CuO layer. These findings allow concluding about the possible implementation of the proposed method in industry. Research limitations/implications: The main limitation is conditioned by the lack of heat supplied to the anode, and absence of independent control of the heat and ion fluxes; thus, the additional heater should be installed under the anode in order to expand the nomenclature of the nanospecies in the future studies. Practical implications: High-productivity plasma process in copper oxide nanostructures synthesis was confirmed in this research. It may be applied for field emitter and supercapacitor manufacturing. Originality/value: Oxide nanostructure synthesis is conducted by use of a simple and well-known glow discharge technique in order to expand the production yield and diversity of nanostructure obtained in the processes of thermal growth.

As far as women’s wellbeing is concerned, ancient and Byzantine physicians took great care not only of their patients’ health sensu stricto but also of their appearance. A testimony of the approach is given, for instance, by Aetius of Amida’s (6th cent. AD) Libri medicinales, where he devotes much attention to cosmetics, including a group of deodorising antiperspirants called καταπάσματα. In our study we analyse one prescription, taken by Aetius from Criton of Heraclea’s (1st/2nd cent. AD) treatise, trying to prove that it is very informative of medical (especially pharmaceutical) theory as well as practice in the social context of the 6th century AD. In order to achieve our goal, first, we analyse ancient and Byzantine materia medica, scrutinizing the medical properties ascribed to each component of the cosmetic in the light of the theory in force between the 1st and the 6th centuries AD. Next, we determine the method of preparation of the antiperspirant, its form, the mode and place of its application. Finally, we proceed to assess its market value as a marker exposing the group of the cosmetic’s addressees. As a result, we conclude that the recipe was competently worked out on the basis of a theory commonly accepted by medical authorities, and that the preparation was designed for women (but also for men) of a high social status.

AISI 316L steel was subjected to nitrocarburizing under glow discharge conditions, which was followed by DLC (diamond-like carbon) coatings deposition using the same device. The coatings were applied under conditions of direct current and pulsed glow discharge. In order to determine the influence of the produced nitrocarbon austenite layer and the type of discharge on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the coatings, the following features were analysed: surface roughness, coating thickness, structure, chemical composition, adhesion and resistance to frictional wear. For comparison purposes, DLC coatings were also deposited on steel without a nitrocarburised layer. The obtained results indicate a significant influence of the type of glow discharge on the roughness, hardness, nitrogen content and of the nitrocarburised layer on the resistance to wear by friction and adhesion of the produced coatings.

This study presents the effect of the principles of dramatic poetics with regard to the way the concept of a character in eighteenth-century opera seria was formed. Similarly to the rococo message of Antoine Watteau’s paintings, this genre of opera was characterised by melancholic sophistication, the rule of the artificiality of the presented world and an allegorical plan of reference that assumed an intellectualised strategy of reception of a work of art. The article presents the path to the formation of a model eighteenth-century-opera character, from the transformation of the principles of Aristotelian poetics due to the influence of the rhetorical and scholastic tradition and later due to that of the poetics of French classicism. Händel’s Alcina serves as an example of the superiority of ethos and pathos, i.e. of the presentation of the affects and internal states of the titular character, over other elements of the drama. It is also used to explain to what extent the project of the rococo opera, artificial and challenging the probability rule, practises the mimetic postulates of artistics presentation.

Despite the development of hybrid and electric vehicles, a many-million population of cars with combustion engines, and particularly CI engines occurs on the roads. Also, many stationary CI engines are still utilized. Despite their improved technologies and characteristics the modern CI engines negatively affect an environment due to cold starting problems. Below 0°C, engine starts are problematic due to the decreased battery performance and the spray characteristics, the increased ignition delay time, and the engine oil viscosity. Therefore, various glow plugs are applied to facilitate this process. Types, features, and applications of glow plugs in various engines have been discussed in the paper. One case of failure of glow plug has been presented in the article, including the cause of it.

Restitution of cultural goods is a very complicated issue in practice, encountering many problems on its way. Most international conventions, including the 1970 UNESCO Convention and the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention, provide for non-retroactivity of their provisions and a limited time to bring claims for reimbursement. Another problem is the still low number of ratifications of both conventions, especially the one from 1995. Also, the national legislation of many countries still does not contain regulations in this area and appropriate restitution instruments. Once the Chinese government realized the value of its cultural heritage treasures as a source of national and political identity, it began the process of restoring looted cultural assets. This is not an easy task, because a large part of the objects was stolen a long time ago, which directly prevents the application of international legal regimes resulting from conventions on the return of stolen or illegally exported goods. The case of bronze statues from the Yuanming Yuan shows another way to recover looted cultural goods. It is based primarily on the national identity of Chinese society, which treats looted artifacts as an important element of their history and culture. Thanks to private collectors and entrepreneurs who had bought such objects and then donated them to Chinese museums and institutions, it was possible to regain many of the lost cultural goods. The aim of article is to provide a general overview of the People’s Republic of China’s restitution policy, its methods and effects, using the example of the recovery of Chinese bronze heads stolen from Yuanming Yuan.

The paper discusses the application of an in-cylinder catalyst allowing a reduction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. Its placement in the combustion chamber, the area where the process of combustion takes place, allows reducing the emissions (carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulate matter) ‘at source’. The paper presents the possibilities of boosting the efficiency of catalysts in diesel engines by extending the time of heating of a glow plug (the catalyst applied on the glow plug). The tests were performed for the following conditions: no heating (marked 0+0), glow plug heating for 60 s after engine start (marked 0+60), glow plug heating prior to engine start for 60 s and glow plug heating for 60 s after engine cold start (marked 60+60). An improvement in the efficiency of oxidation of the exhaust components was observed as the glow plug heating time increased.

Nitrogen-doped DLC (diamond-like carbon) coatings were produced on 316L nitrided austenitic steel in direct current and pulsed glow discharge conditions. The chemical composition, surface topography, hardness and corrosion resistance of the obtained carbon coatings were examined. The coatings varied in surface morphology, roughness and hardness. Direct current glow discharge made it possible to produce a coating characterized by lower hardness, greater thickness and higher nitrogen content. The coating featured improved corrosion resistance and adhesion compared to coatings produced in the pulsed process.

In the present work, an effect of plasma-forming parameters on light emission during analysis by glow discharge optical emission spectrometry of Ni–Cu model alloys is studied. To evaluate the effects of plasma-forming parameters on light emission, argon pressure was varied in the range between 600 Pa and 1000 Pa under a constant power of 20 W. Moreover, a variation of power at 20 W and 30 W under a constant Ar pressure of 1000 Pa was investigated. An effect of the element content on light emission was found. Namely, for Cu, a monotonic, non-linear increase in measured light intensity with an increasing Cu content was found. Surprisingly, for pure Ni, a lower light intensity was measured as for Ni90–Cu10 (at.%). Possible reasons causing this was listed as: (i) possible effect of hydrogen, (ii) overlapping of lines for Cu and Ni and (iii) self-absorbing of Ni line at 341.574 nm.

The oral cavity due to its temperature fluctuations, changing pH, high humidity, action of mechanical forces and the presence of microorganisms is a favorable environment for degradation of dental materials. The paper presents comparative results on orthodontic arch-wires AISI304 steel before and after low temperature plasma nitriding carried out at cathodic potential (conventional) and at plasma potential, i.e. in a process incorporating an active screen. Corrosion resistance test on nitrided layers produced on stainless steel were carried out via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the potentiodynamic method in non-deaerated artificial saliva solution at 37°C. The results were complemented with analysis of the structure, surface topography and microhardness. The results showed an increase in corrosion resistance of AISI304 steel after conventional glow-discharge nitriding.

The study focuses on the ecological elements of the ceremonial folklore feature, namely the song Singing at dawn – typical for the Hrušov village. It is a microsurvey on the specific wedding songs that indicate the ceremonial symbolic bride’s farewell to her friends. This feature is observed as a phenomenon of the local culture and as a result of the impact of various determinants which are part of the sociocultural resources of the village. The study describes the form of the examined feature and its contemporary functions.
Badanie koncentruje się na ekologicznych elementach ceremonialnego folkloru – dokładniej pieśni zatytułowanej Śpiewanie o świcie – charakterystycznej dla wsi Hrušov. Jest to mikroprzegląd konkretnych piosenek weselnych, które wskazują na uroczyste pożegnanie panny młodej z przyjaciółmi. Cecha ta jest obserwowana jako zjawisko lokalnej kultury oraz jako wynik oddziaływania różnych uwarunkowań, które są częścią społeczno-kulturowych zasobów wsi. W pracy opisano formę badanej cechy i jej współczesne funkcje.

In the period 1915-2019 several heads of the Polish State hosted in Wadowice. Generally they held title of the president. Some of the distinguished figures (e.g. Józef Piłsudski, Lech Wałęsa) who passed by Wadowice, in the later time discharged duties of the supreme power in the state. Ignacy Mościcki was the first president who visited Wadowice (1929). Most visits was noted after political changes in Poland (1989), in 3rd Republic of Poland. Over the period 1995-2019 further presidents of Republic of Poland: Lech Wałęsa (1995), Lech Kaczyński (2006 I 2009), Bronisław Komorowski (2014) and Andrzej Duda (2019) hosted in the town by the Skawa river. Those visits raised the rank and prestige of Wadowice in all country, as papal town with itself history and contemporary active community.
W latach 1915-2019 w Wadowicach gościło kilka głów Państwa Polskiego. Generalnie byli to prezydenci choć niektóre z tych postaci (np. Józef Piłsudski i Lech Wałęsa), dopiero później sprawowali najwyższy urząd w państwie. Ignacy Mościcki był pierwszym prezydentem, który odwiedził Wadowice (1929 r.). Większość wizyt miało miejsce po zmianach politycznych 1989 r. W latach 1995-2019 Wadowice odwiedzli: Lech Wałęsa (1995), Lech Kaczyński (2006 i 2009), Bronisław Komorowski (2014) i Andrzej Duda (2019). Wizyty te podnosiły rangę i prestiż miasta w skali całego kraju jako miasta papieskiego.

The issue of ORPD (Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch) for enhancing security and economy of a power system has been given substantial consideration in recent days. The major inspiration behind deploying an ORPD system for enhancing power system efficiency is to reallocate the RP (reactive power) in such a manner that power loss be minimized, and voltage profiles get enhanced. Hence, this paper concerns the major objectives, namely, reduction of power loss and voltage deviation that are related to solving ORPD problem under unbalanced condition. To attain these objectives, an amalgamation of two algorithms, called CS (Cuckoo Search) and GWSO (Glow Worm Swarm), is adopted for optimizing, and hence the proposed model is referred to as CP-GWSO. This algorithm functions with the control parameters, namely load reactance, voltage and transformer tap settings that are tuned to attain the optimum outcome. The entire empirical part of the investigations is performed on two IEEE standard test bus systems, the IEEE 14 and the IEEE 39 bus systems. Finally, the proposed scheme is compared to the conventional methods, and its efficiency is confirmed.
