Opis:
Nuclear receptors are ligand-dependent transcription factors responsible for controlling differentiation, growth and development of higher eukaryotes. Three amino acids within the recognition α-helix of the DNA-binding domain of the nuclear receptors constitute the so-called "P-box" which determines response element specificity. In the ultraspiracle (Usp) protein, which together with EcR forms the heterodimeric ecdysone receptor, the P-box residues are E19, G20 and G23. Substitution of E19, the most characteristic amino acid for estrogen receptor-like P-boxes, with alanine showed that the mutation did not appreciably alter the affinity of the wild-type Usp DNA-binding domain (UspDBDWT) for a probe containing natural ecdysone response element (hsp27wt). Since in many cases E19 contacts a G/C base pair in position -4, which is absent in hsp27wt, we analysed the interaction of UspDBDWT, E19A and other P-box region mutants with the hsp27wt derivative which contains a G/C instead of an T/A base pair in position -4. UspDBDWT exhibited higher affinity for this element than for hsp27wt. Moreover, a different interaction pattern of P-box region mutants was also observed. Thus we conclude that the E19 residue of UspDBD is not involved in any hsp27wt sequence-discerning contacts. However, substitution of the hsp27wt T/A base pair in position -4 with G/C generates target sequence with distinct functional characteristics and possibly with a new specificity. These results could serve as a basis for understanding the role of the presence of a T/A or G/C base-pair in the position -4 in the two types of ecdysone response elements found in nature.

Opis:
Long-termhydrobiological research has shown that the functioning of the ecosystem of the Neva Estuary, one of the largest Baltic estuaries, has changed greatly since the beginning of the 20th century. Ineffective local water management in St.Petersburg during the last twenty years has stimulated the development of a natural ‘biological plug’ in the salt barrier zone in the inner part of the estuary and has altered the ecosystem’s functioning. These changes include an increase in primary production, in the primary production : organic matter decomposition ratio, and in pelagic-benthic coupling. It has also given rise to filamentous algae blooms and intensive secondary pollution in the coastal zone of the Neva Estuary. The primary production of phytoplankton in the inner part of the estuary has reached 2.3 gC m−2, that of the filamentous algae Cladophora glomerata 5.5 gC m−2; these figures are much higher than in other regions of the Gulf of Finland.

Opis:
Habrobracon hebetor Say is one of the most important natural enemies of the Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lep.: Noctuidae). In this study, the sublethal effects of LC30 concentration of azadirachtin, cypermethrin, methoxyfenozide and pyridalil on the functional response of H. hebetor to different densities of 5th instars larvae of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller were evaluated. Young females were exposed to LC30 of the insecticides for an appropriate time of exposure. Then, six randomly selected alive females were transferred individually to plastic Petri dishes (10 cm in diameter) and supplied with the following densities: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 of 5th instars of E. kuehniella for 24 h. Eight replicates were considered for each insecticide treatment and the control. The results revealed a type II functional response in the control, and all of the insecticide treatments. This study showed that the control and the cypermethrin treatment had the shortest (0.4143 h) and longest (0.624 h) handling time, respectively. The highest (0.0035 per hour) and lowest (0.0029 per hour) attack rate was observed in pyridalil and cypermethrin treatments, respectively. Based on values of handling time, cypermethrin had the highest adverse effect on host-finding in H. hebetor.

Opis:
The dynamics of a discrete-time predator–prey model with Holling-IV functional response are investigated. It is shown that the model undergoes a flip bifurcation, a Hopf bifurcation and a saddle-node bifurcation by using the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory. Numerical simulations not only exhibit our results with the theoretical analysis, but also show the complex dynamical behaviors, such as the period-3, 6, 9, 12, 20, 63, 70, 112 orbits, a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations in period-2, 4, 8, 16, quasi-periodic orbits, an attracting invariant circle, an inverse period-doubling bifurcation from the period-32 orbit leading to chaos and a boundary crisis, a sudden onset of chaos and a sudden disappearance of the chaotic dynamics, attracting chaotic sets and non-attracting sets. We also observe that when the prey is in chaotic dynamics the predator can tend to extinction or to a stable equilibrium. Specifically, we stabilize the chaotic orbits at an unstable fixed point by using OGY chaotic control.

Opis:
The functional response is a behavioral phenomena defined as the relation between the parasitized host per each parasitoid and host density. This phenomenon can be useful in assessing parasitoid efficiency for the biological control of the host. Parasitoid wasps are most important insects and they play a significant role in the natural control of pests via their parasitism activities. In this study, the effects of diazinon and malathion were evaluated on the functional response of Habrobracon hebetor Say to different densities of last instar larvae of Anagasta kuehniella Zeller. Young adult females (< 24 h old) of the parasitoid were exposed to LC30 values of pesticides. Host densities of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 were offered, to treated young females for 24 h in 10 cm Petri dishes. At this point, the parasitism data were recorded. The experiments were conducted in eight replications. The functional response was type Ш in the control and insecticide treatments. Searching efficiency in the control, diazinon and malathion-treated wasps were 0.008±0.002, 0.003±0.002, and 0.004±0.002 h-1, handling times were 1.38±0.1, 7.95±0.91, and 6.4±0.81 h, respectively. Diazinon and malathion had the highest and the lowest effect on searching efficiency of H. hebetor, respectively. After conducting advanced field studies, it was found that malathion may be used as a compatible chemical material with biological control agent in IPM programs.

Opis:
Bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi L.) is the most abundant aphid species on cereals in Poland. It represents approximately 80% of all cereal aphids. Its anholocyclic forms are the most important vectors of Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). These forms are new among the Polish population of R. padi. Their changes in development are the result of higher temperatures. High spring and summer temperatures initiate a change in the run of R. padi’s life cycle, which begins to reproduce by means of permanent parthenogenesis. In autumn, this aphid does not fly back to the primary host but inhabits wild grasses. It is in autumn that winter cereals emerge. This results in what appears to be a new problem because this viral infection spreads in warmer environmental conditions.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to characterize the diet composition of tawny owl in relation to environmental variables: season and availability of small rodents. Study area was located in central Poland, in Łódź voivodship, in the area of Rogów Forest District. It comprised of a mosaic of forests and arable lands. The study was done in the years 2003−2010. Pellets were collected at least twice a year in 18 tawny owl territories. Material collected between April and September was categorised as coming from spring−summer, while this from October−March period as autumn−winter season. Simultaneously, in the years 2004−2007, changes in the number of small rodents were monitored by live−trapping. Standard procedures of pellet analyses were used to identify 1926 prey items. Generally, diet composition was dominated by small rodents. Yet, their share was significantly higher in autumn−winter season (71.3 vs. 57.3%). Among rodents, yellow−necked mice, common voles and bank voles were caught most often. Soricomorphs accounted for 3% of prey items in both seasons on average. Birds formed approximately 15% of prey items and their share was comparable in warm and cold half year. On the other hand, in a warmer period owls preyed on invertebrates more often (23.0 vs. 7.5%). A breadth niche was wider in a warm (D=4.01) half year than in cold one (D=3.36). When a peak of rodent number was recorded, owls preyed on bank voles twice as often as compared to other years (increase from 6.4 to 11% of prey items), while an increase in the consumption of yellow−necked mouse was lower (from 27.5 to 34.2%). Tawny owls preferred yellow−necked mice and bank voles were avoided. This study showed that in the Rogów Forest tawny owl is an opportunistic predator. However, composition of its diet does not absolutely reflect the structure of assemblage of small mammals as certain species are preferred.

In this study, rubber seed/shea butter oil was used to formulate core oil. The formulated core oil was characterised. D-optimal mixture design was used for multi response optimisation of the functional properties of rubber seed-shea butter coil oil. Desirable values for some responses might be obtained from a factor combination while for others responses not so desirable values. Through multiple response optimisations, a factor setting that gives the desirable values for all responses was obtained. The selected optimum mixture setting for the formulated core oil is 65.937% Rubber seed and 34.063% Shea butter oil at desirability of 0.924. Under the optimum condition the functional properties of the core oil was found to be 39.57KN/M2, 626.85KN/M2, 36.63KN/M2, 593.906KN/M2, 412.605 and 167.309s for Green Compressive Strength, Dry Compressive Strength, Green Tensile Strength, Dry Tensile Strength, Permeability and Collapsibility respectively. The optimum conditions were validated with less than 0.2% error. The functional properties of the formulated core oil was compared to the functional properties of linseed core oil. It was found that rubber seed-shea butter core oil can be used for producing cores suitable for Aluminium casting.

This paper presents the estimator of the conditional density function of surrogated scalar response variable given a functional random one. We construct a conditional density function by using the available (true) response data and the surrogate data. Then, we build up some asymptotic properties of the constructed estimator in terms of the almost complete convergences. As a result, we compare our estimator with the classical estimator through the Relatif Mean Square Errors (RMSE). Finally, we end this analysis by displaying the superiority of our estimator in terms of prediction when we are lacking complete data.
