Disorders in the functioning of the human body balance system exist in 20-30 % of adults and in 8-18% of children. The main causes of these aberrations are: benign positional vertigoes, migraine, anxiety disorders and depression, cerebrovascular diseases, brain traumas, labyrinthitis, toxic impairment of labyrinth, vestibular neuronitis, Ménière disease, brain tumours. Among the minor causes of these disorders are: internal ear disorders, inner ear circulation disorders, sclerosis multiplex (SM), epilepsy, arterial hypertension, postural hypertension, heart rhythm disorders, sclerosis, hypoglycaemia and involutional alternations (see: prezbiastazja). Human body balance disorders increase the risk of falls, which may threaten health and life. Frequency of these disorders raises with age, which is the cause of progressing degeneration of all the anatomical and functional systems, the efficiency of which affects the stability of the human body. Determination of the factors, which are related to a worse functioning of the body balance system of young people, who do not experience any clinical symptoms caused by this system is vital, especially in preventing falls and complications attributed to them. It allows to implement possibly early the preventive actions substantial for people encumbered by the risk factors. The aforesaid actions may consist in the alternation of a given factor (diet, sleep, physical activity). In case of  the factors, which are not subject to modifications (i.e. heterogeneous form of the functional lateralization), it is essential to prevent potential diseases that disturb the functioning of the body balance system, which is already impaired. This study aimed to acquaint with the findings concerning the evaluation of the functional lateralization enriched with a new diagnostic tool – a computerized dynamic posturography. The computerized dynamic posturography (CPD) is a state-of-the-art and faultless evaluation tool of the functional lateralization. It provides a comprehensive knowledge, which concerns not only the preferences of the body, but also constitutes an objective and quantitative diagnostic method for the disorders in the functioning of the body balance system. CPD differentiates a few clinical protocols: the Sensory Organization Test (SOT); the Motor  Control Test (MCT); the Adaptation Test (ADT). SOT evaluates the control of the body balance in different conditions (eyes closed/eyes opened;  environment moves/ground moves) of the sensory systems stimulation. MCT assesses the postural reactions (body postures) in response to an unexpected changes in the location of the feet prop surface. ADT  assesses the efficiency of the adaptation mechanisms in the body balance control.

Opis:
The article presents the issue of the development of linguistic competence in the context of neurobiological research which points to the functional asymmetry of the brain. A reflection of this asymmetry is, among other things, lateralization of paired organs of the body. The author presents the results of studies indicating a connection between the development of lateralization and the development of language. She also emphasizes the need for therapeutic intervention for children with ambidexterity, cross or left-sided laterality. Moreover, the aim of the article is to sensitize people working with pre-school children to the issue of delays in dominance of paired organs. The aim of this study was to verify whether chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) demonstrate an auditory laterality during the orientation reaction, and which hemisphere is responsible for processing the emotional stimuli and which for the species-specific vocalizations. The study involved nine chimpanzees from the Warsaw Municipal Zoological Garden. They were tested individually in their bedrooms. Chimpanzees approached a tube filled with food, located in the centre of the cage. Randomly selected sounds were played from the speakers when the subject was focused on getting food. Individual reactions were observed and outcomes reported. The four types of sound used: thunderstorm, dog barking, chimpanzee vocalization and a zoo-keeper’s voice. To test whether chimpanzees demonstrate auditory laterality we used a single sample X2 test. The existence of auditory laterality has been confirmed. The sound of the storm caused the orientation reaction to the left, while chimpanzee vocalization – to the right. On this basis we can conclude that among chimpanzees, arousing stimuli are being processed by the right hemisphere, and species-specific vocalizations by the left. However, the set of stimuli was limited so the study did not unequivocally resolve this issue.

The cerebral lateralization of language has attracted great research interest. Nevertheless, the bulk of the work focuses on language production and comprehension; research on cerebral lateralization during writing is limited. The present study assessed cerebral lateralization in 60 participants (mean age = 26.65 years, SD = 6.05, range = 20-44), 30 right-handers (14 men) and 30 left-handers (16 men), during written language production by means of functional transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (fTCD) for the first time. Findings show that left-hemispheric lateralization is observed during silent word production, for both left- and right-handers. However, during written word production, the degree of typical (left) hemispheric lateralization was significantly increased for right-handers, while left-handers presented atypical (right) hemispheric lateralization. Importantly, the difference between silent and written word generation was significantly higher in left- compared to right-handers. No main effect of sex or interactions with sex were observed. Findings suggest that a wider network of right-hemispheric areas is used during writing in left-handers. Thus, the known differences in cerebral lateralization between right- and left-handers are stronger during written language production. However, the relative contribution of language and motor areas needs to be further elucidated.

Atypical representations of praxis and language were studied in two forms and combinations: bilateral organization, and right lateralization, independently for each function; when the atypically represented praxis dissociates from typically lateralized language; and when both praxis and language have atypical forms. Direct differences between bilateral and right-lateralized representations were either marginal (for praxis), or nonexistent (for language). Because atypical organization of praxis is over twice as frequent as language in its atypical form, sample size might be an issue only for the latter (as atypical organization of language is very rare). Group averages in their dissociations, and associations in atypical forms, revealed the expected representations of the two functions. These outcomes indicate that merging the two atypical representations of praxis, or language, into one atypical group can reveal the critical aspects of their atypicality, including subcortical contributions, without seriously impeding correct interpretation of the essential underlying neural mechanisms.

The performance of learned manual gestures (praxis) and the production of speech are thought to depend on related neural processes. If this relationship is not invoked by an unknown, third variable then shifts in their laterality, including dissociations of these two functions, would be unlikely unless the sharing of some neural resources with other functions is advantageous. This could be the case in lefthanders, in whom actions requiring manual precision are controlled by their right hemispheres, and whose representations could attract the control of skilled gesture. Functional neuroimaging (fMRI) was used to study praxis and language functions. Their lateralization indices were measured in 56 consecutively tested lefthanders (28 females), with the mean age of 23.3±4.9 years (range 18.4 – 47 years), and an Edinburgh Handedness Inventory quotient between –100 and –55.6 (with the mean of –83.8±14.2). We show that atypical, bilateral organization or right-lateralization of praxis is more common than atypical organization/lateralization of language, observed, respectively, in 23 (41%) vs. 15 (26.8%) of cases. Specifically, we found: (a) seven cases (12.5%) of clear, and an additional three cases (5.4%) of less pronounced dissociations of atypically represented praxis from typically represented language; (b) 13 cases (23.2%) with atypically organized praxis also associated with atypically organized language, and (c) only two cases (3.6%) of rather strongly atypical lateralization of language, yet with quite typical lateralization of praxis. These outcomes are consistent with an idea that, in some lefthanders, the guidance of skilled manual actions can profit from tighter links with the right hemisphere, whose motor specialization is linked in this particular population to manual precision, but in general to attentional resources, visuo-spatial processing and even bimanual coordination. Because of the presumed links of praxis with productive language, such transfers are often, and unsurprisingly accompanied by the reorganization of the latter. Yet, the very rare cases of reversed language functions, without any pronounced shifts in representations of praxis, indicate that such a pattern of segregation – or inverse dissociation – of these two functions could be maladaptive.
