Opis:
Previously undescribed specimens of stagodontid marsupials from Late Cretaceous deposits in Alberta, Canada, reveal new information concerning the upper dentition of Eodelphisspp. and the lower dentition of Didelphodon coyi. Additionally, an incomplete upper dentition of D. coyi from the Scollard Formation extends the range of this species into the Lancian, co−eval with D. vorax and D. padanicus. Stagodontids are in accord with other North American Late Cretaceous marsupials for which the appropriate parts are known in lacking diastemata between the canines and the molars while possessing well−developed palatal vacuities, implying that these morphologies characterized ancestral marsupials. If so, the diastema between P1 and P2 in the Asian middle Early Cretaceous “metatherian” Sinodelphys szalayi is convergent on that in Cenozoic didelphids, and the absence of palatal vacuities in South American Paleogene and Neogene borhyaenids is derived, representing a paedomorphic truncation of development. Claims that the Asian Late Cretaceous “metatherian” Deltatheridium pretrituberculare had a marsupial−like dental replacement pattern are tautological, deduced from an a priori acceptance of a marsupial model of replacement to the exclusion of other, no less realistic, alternatives. The new specimens of Didelphodon coyi demonstrate that upper and lower premolars occluded broadly, implying that the inflated lingual lobes characteristic of Didelphodon premolars evolved primarily as a crushing mechanism, not for passive protection of the gums. Recent speculations that stagodontids were aquatic are not based on credible morphologic or taphonomic evidence and are dismissed, as is speculation that the Judithian species of Eodelphis are sexual morphs of a single species. Current knowledge of Didelphodon compels correction of numerous errors concerning its morphology as presented in recent analyses of marsupial relationships.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the subjective perspective of a person with congenital low vision who experienced gradual vision deterioration up to total loss. The case study method was used, in which the narrative biographic interview was the main technique of collecting data. In the analysed narratives, certain milestones were identified in the process of coping with the consequences of progressive impairment. Those were the situations when the subject was no longer able to perform a specific task, which she had earlier performed under visual control. They made the subject realise the progressive nature of the disease and inevitably confronted her with the acquisition of permanent severe impairment. Those situations caused temporary disruption of her psychological balance and increased her demand for emotional support. With time, however, they also motivated the subject to use previously rejected rehabilitation devices and techniques. Lack of knowledge of functional implications of eye conditions (including reduced acuity and contrast sensitivity, field defects, light/dark adaptation problems, etc.) among family members and other people hindered the process of providing optimal instrumental support to the subject.

Opis:
Enamel microstructure is studied here in Toxodon sp., a notoungulate from the Pleistocene of South America. The material includes 13 specimens from outcrops in São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul states, Brazil. Analyses of ground sections of upper and lower incisors, premolars, molars, and deciduous premolars by scanning electron microscopy reveal Schmelzmuster with three enamel types: modified radial enamel (MRE), associated with the enameldentine junction (EDJ); Hunter Schreger bands (HSB), an intermediary layer with decussating prisms; and radial enamel (RE), a layer placed next to the outer enamel surface. Microstructural features vary in each tooth category, on the buccal and lingual sides, as well as in the different regions of each tooth. The proportion of RE increases in the occlusal area of I2, which commonly exhibits intense wear, and may be related to abrasion resistance. HSB thickness ranges from 6 to 20 prisms, with the thickest portions placed in areas with intense masticatory loads. The most concentrated packing densities of HSB in the upper incisors and lower premolars suggest these teeth bore the greatest biomechanical demands. Incisors and cheek teeth show differentiation of Schmelzmuster, suggesting dental antagonistic contact areas, as well as leading and trailing edges. Deciduous premolars exhibit enamel in the early stages of development, and a neonatal line is observed almost parallel to the EDJ, possibly related to biological stress during birth. The EDJ is scalloped in all dental categories, with varying sizes and shapes. Larger and more pronounced scallops are observed in I2, i3, p4, and in the enamel folds of the upper and lower cheek teeth, associated with microstructural features indicative of greater biomechanical demands. Microstructural enamel findings presented here corroborate morphological trends in the dentition of Notoungulata related to hypsodonty, providing greater resistance to the consumption of abrasive diets in these euhypsodont-toothed herbivores.

Diversity of diapsid fifth metatarsals from the Lower Triassic karst deposits of Czatkowice, southern Poland —functional and phylogenetic implications

Opis:
Three morphotypes of the fifth metatarsal (MttV), one of the most informative bones of the postcranium, have been described herein from the Early Triassic karst deposits of the Czatkowice locality (Southern Poland). Two of them have been assigned to a basal archosauriform Osmolskina czatkowicensis and a basal lepidosauromorph, Sophineta cracoviensis, respectively, while one is undetermined saurian. Two morphological categories of the hooked fifth metatarsals recognized from this assemblage account for two different solutions to the problem of improvement of locomotion. A strongly inflected (sensu Robinson 1975) MttV shaft consists of two parts, a distal one lying on the ground in a plantigrade manner and a proximal one bent at an angle to get align with the ventral surface of the crus and proximal tarsus. In contrast, a straight shaft of the hooked MttV, suggests its subvertical life position and thus a digitigrade foot stance. The hooking of the fifth metatarsal, that is currently accepted saurian synapomorphy, appeared in phylogeny in a primitive state referred to herein as a neckless type: with neither a neck-shaped articular protrusion for the fourth distal tarsal nor a directly medial orientation of the articular facet. A derived long-necked type with protruding arricular part and more directly medial orientation of the articular facet appeared, at various stages of further phylogeny. A strong plantar–dorsal inflexion of the fifth metatarsal associated with a protrusion of lateral plantar tubercle, dates from a directly pre-lepidosaurian stage of evolution.

The distributivity law for a fuzzy implication \(I\colon [0,1]^2 \to [0,1]\) with respect to a fuzzy disjunction \(S\colon [0,1]^2 \to [0,1]\) states that the functional equation \( I(x,S(y,z))=S(I(x,y),I(x,z)) \) is satisfied for all pairs \((x,y)\) from the unit square. To compare some results obtained while solving this equation in various classes of fuzzy implications, Wanda Niemyska has reduced the problem to the study of the following two functional equations: \( h(\min(xg(y),1)) = \min(h(x)+ h(xy),1)\), \(x \in (0,1)\), \(y \in (0,1]\), and \( h(xg(y)) = h(x)+ h(xy)\), \(x,y \in (0, \infty)\), in the class of increasing bijections \(h\colon [0,1] \to [0,1]\) with an increasing function \(g\colon (0,1] \to [1, \infty)\) and in the class of monotonic bijections \(h\colon (0, \infty) \to (0, \infty)\) with a function \(g\colon (0, \infty) \to (0, \infty)\), respectively. A description of solutions in more general classes of functions (including nonmeasurable ones) is presented.

Opis:
A new genus and species of Asteroidea (Echinodermata), Estoniaster maennili, is described from the Upper Ordovician (Caradocian) of Estonia; it is similar to the western European genus Platanaster and the North American Lanthanaster and an as yet unpublished new genus. Specimens of Urasterella? sp. and Cnemidactissp. are recognized from the Middle Ordovician of northwest Russia; although similar to known species, incomplete preservation precludes more precise taxonomic assessment. Asteroids are important in many existing marine communities, and in spite of a meager fossil record, diversity suggests they were important in the early Paleozoic as well. Some debate has centered on arm flexibility in early asteroids, which bears on their roles in their communities. Parallels in ambulacral series arrangement between Ordovician and extant species and presence of an ambulacral furrow indicate similar broad ranges of motion and therefore potentially parallel ecologic roles. Many factors might have contributed to the differences between ancient and extant ambulacral articulation, including changes in positioning of a part of the water vascular system, changes in predation and bioturbation pressures, and taphonomic events that obscure skeletal details.

A new exquisitely preserved stem group echinoderm (cinctan), Lignanicystis barriosensis gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Middle Cambrian of Los Barrios de Luna, North Spain. This displays a unique asymmetrical body plan with ventral projecting nodes that raised the lower surface above the substratum. There are four openings through the body wall: mouth, anus, atrium, and an aligned row of sutural pores of uncertain function. Unlike other cinctans, Lignanicystis has a strongly asymmetrical shape convergent with that of some cornute carpoids. Like cornutes, the test is also elevated above the substratum to allow water flow beneath the theca. In both cases this is probably an adaptation to life in higher water flow regimes.

The purpose of the article is open to debate. It presents the main conclusions from a study made in March 2017 for the Office of Analysis and Expertise of the Senate of the Republic of Poland on the merits of changes in the territorial division of the Warsaw Metropolitan Area. In this study was carried out a synthesis of the research conducted mainly by the author on the development of Warsaw Metropolitan Area and the Mazowieckie voivodship, including the impact of the capital and delimitation of its functional urban area. In its summary were formulated the most important conclusions, arguing for finding a compromise solution, aimed at establishing a new administrative division system, taking into account both the daily urban system, spatial cohesion needs, and the interests of residents and entrepreneurs. Due to the importance of the area, including Warsaw’s functions as a capital city, the conclusions apply to the whole Poland.
