Opis:
Background. Parasitological surveys of freshwater fishes rarely include comparisons between two ecologically different bodies of water. Such studies might help to understand processes of establishment of parasite faunas in estuary areas. The results obtained could also provide useful tools for discriminating various fish populations based on the composition of their parasite faunas. The present authors attempted to study such data from Resko Lake-a freshwater coastal lagoon (6 km? surface area), and the adjacent areas of the Baltic Sea. Resko Lake, located 12 km west of the city of Kołobrzeg, is shallow (1.5 m) and is connected to the sea through a small canal (1.3 km long, 30 m wide). Material and methods. The material was collected from April 1969 and July 1970. A total of 159 perch were collected, in this number 104 fish from the lake, 43 from the sea, and 12 from the canal. Results. A total of 32 parasite species were recovered from the fish necropsied. The parasites represented 7 higher taxa: Protozoa (3 species), Cestoda (4), Digenea (13), Nematoda (5), Acanthocephala (3), Mollusca (1), and Crustacea (3). The parasite fauna of perch from the sea was definitely more abundant (31 species) compared to that of the lake (21), and the canal (12 species). Infection parameters of 13 parasite species demonstrated significant differences between the locations studied. The infection level of 6 parasite species was significantly higher in perch from the sea: Bothriocephalus scorpii, Ligula sp., Brachyphallus crenatus, Camallanus truncatus, Hysterothylacium aduncum, and Echinorhynchus gadi. On the other hand, infection levels of 7 other species were higher at the lake: Triaenophorus nodulosus, Bucephalus polymorphus, Azygia lucii, Tylodelphys clavata, Camallanus lacustris, Acanthocephalus lucii, and Achtheres percarum. The infection parameters of the fish from canal were similar to those from the lake. Interesting observations were made on the seasonality of certain parasites of both lake- and Baltic perch. The presently observed differences between parasite faunas of the fish from ecologically different adjacent estuarine locations are certainly caused by diversified environmental conditions that affected the processes of formation of the parasite communities there. Among important factors that could affect compositions of the parasite faunas could have been: availability of the intermediate hosts, exchange of waters (Baltic water influxes to the lake), fish migrations (spawning), and finally the separate identity of the two fish stocks studied.

Opis:
This study focuses on the inter- and intra-specific variability in δ13C and δ18O values of shells and opercula of gastropods sampled live from the littoral zone of Lake Lednica, western Poland. The δ13C and δ18O values were measured in individual opercula of Bithynia tentaculata and in shells of Bithynia tentaculata, Gyraulus albus, Gyraulus crista, Lymnaea sp., Physa fontinalis, Radix auricularia, Theodoxus fluviatilis and Valvata cristata. The gastropods selected for the study are among the species most commonly found in European Quaternary lacustrine sediments. The carbon isotope composition of the gastropod shells was species-specific and the same order of species from the most to the least 13C-depleted was observed at all sites sampled. Differences in shell δ13C values between species were similar at all sampling sites, thus the factors influencing shell isotopic composition were interpreted as species-specific. The δ18O values of shells were similar in all the species investigated. Significant intra-specific variability in shell δ13C and δ18O values was observed not only within the populations of Lake Lednica, which can be explained by heterogeneity of δ13C DIC, δ18O water and water temperature between the sites where macrophytes with snails attached were sampled, but also between individuals sampled from restricted areas of the lake’s bottom. The latter points to the importance of factors related to the ontogeny of individual gastropods.

Opis:
The freshwater dinoflagellate represent microfossils which are very rarely noted in lake deposits. In Late Holocene sediments of the Lake Młynek, the Iława Lakeland, northern Poland, we identified intense blooms of algae of the genus Palatinus. They occurred primarily in the period of strong human impact during expansion of the Monastic State of the Teutonic Order. The most amazing thing is that samples in which conventional palynological maceration has been used dinoflagellate are represented by armored vegetative forms instead of cysts. During this laboratory processes, especially acetolysis, cellulosic thecae of armored forms should be destructed. This is the second known example of acetolysis resistant thecae of modern dinoflagellate, built by substance other than cellulose. Palatinus blooms were associated probably with the hydrotechnical works made by Teutonic Knights in the catchment, which caused supply and discharge of micronutrients e.g. selenium in the basin.

The present study was conducted to assessment the some heavy metals, chromium, cadmium, copper, lead, iron, zinc and manganese concentrations in gill, liver, kidney, intestine and muscle of the selected freshwater fish Tilapia mossambica, Claris batrachus, Labeo rohita, Mystus vittatus and Cyprinus carpio communis of the Veeranam Lake Cuddalore district, Tamilnadu, India collected between January 2010- December 2010. Heavy metals concentrations varied in significantly depending upon the type of fish tissues and locations. In the selected freshwater fish, liver tissues appeared to have significantly highest level of chromium followed by Cd, Cu, Pb, Fe, Zn and Mn. The maximum level of chromium in liver tissue followed by the gill, kidney and intestine was found in the of Tilapia mossambica, Claris batrachus, Labeo rohita, Mystus vittatus and Cyprinus carpio communis while the minimum level of manganese was observed in the muscle tissue of Tilapia mossambica, Claris batrachus, Labeo rohita, Mystus vittatus and Cyprinus carpio communis. These levels of metals higher in the fish tissue may be due to increased fertilizers, agricultural wastes, industrial effluents and some anthropogenic activities high in the investigated area.

Opis:
Numerous brackish estuarine water bodies are situated in the Polish Baltic Coastal Zone, including smaller and bigger lakes like Sarbsko, Łebsko, Gardno, Wicko, Kopań, Bukowo, Jamno, Resko Przymorskie, Liwia Łuża, Koprowo and Wicko Wielkie. Despite a similar genesis and geomorphological type, these lakes are characterized by different hydrological and hydrochemical conditions, determined by the predominance of terrestrial or marine factors. The origin of Polish coastal lakes and transboudary water bodies is closely related to the history of the Baltic Sea and the last glaciation. Coastal brackish waters have been inhabited by both marine and freshwater organisms.

Opis:
Microplastics (MPs) has become a very serious global threat, especially to the health of animals, humans and the environment. In this study we aim to investigate the contamination of MPs in sediment, air, and aquatic biota collected from the waters of Lake Beratan in Bali Province, Indonesia. Lake Beratan is one of the strategic areas that continues to develop as a tourist destination, agriculture and fisheries, as well as a source of water for daily needs. Sediment, water, and aquatic biota samples were collected from 4 stations that represent the Beratan Lake area. Each sample obtained was then followed by the pre-treatment stage using 5 M NaCl solution. Furthermore, the extraction process for each sample used wet oxidation peroxidation (WPO) with the addition of Fe (II) catalyst. The highest average weight of MPs in the sediment samples was obtained at the 1st sampling point of 2.53% which was dominated by soft fragments. The percentage of MPs weight in the water samples was varied at each sampling point with the highest obtained at the 4th point of 99.2% and was dominated by hard-shaped fragments at all sampling points. The collected aquatic biota was also contaminated by MPs of 68% in fish and 36.40% in shrimp. The types of MPs found in the digestive tract of aquatic biota are in the form of fragments, filaments, films and foam. These results indicate that the aquatic environment of Lake Beratan, Bali has MPs content that varies in sediment, water and aquatic biota which are often consumed by the local community. This must be of particular concern and further investigation, especially regarding the environmental management of the lake area and the relevant authorities in formulating regulations to reduce the harmful effects of MPs contamination.

Their morphology was investigated based on observations of live and protargol-impregnated material. Based on the present observation and previous descriptions, A. tihanyiensis is characterized by having an elliptical body shape, yellowish cortical granules, two long frontoventral rows, enlarged frontal and transverse cirri, highly variable numbers of frontoventral, and postoral ventral cirri, and six to 11 caudal cirri arranged in three short rows. New data confirm the presence of pretransverse ventral cirri in this species. Morphologically, N. australis differs from its congeners in having the following combination of characters: greenish cortical granules, the cirrus V/2 located slight anterior to the leftmost transverse cirrus, dorsal kinety 3 almost as long as body, and seven to 10 caudal cirri arranged in three short rows. Morphogenesis in N. australis shows the same pattern as in N. apoaustralis but differs from that of other congeners in the origin of oral primordium and the formation of more than just three caudal cirri.

Opis:
This study from the Sremski Karlovci clay pit in northern Serbia sheds new light on the physicochemical conditions, ecology and evolution of the Paludina Lake – the Pliocene successor of the late Miocene giant Lake Pannon hosted by the Pannonian Basin. The multidisciplinary study combines sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, palaeontology, palaeobotany, coal petrology, organic geochemistry and magnetic mineralogy. The sedimentary succession studied represents the lake margin at the foot of the Fruška Gora ridge. Sedimentary facies reveal minor and major lake-level changes, including a forced regression with fluvial valley incision in the succession middle part and the ultimate emergence and covering of the lake floor by Pleistocene loess. Mollusc and ostracod fauna indicates an oligohaline shallow cool-water environment, no deeper than 5–6 m, with an active inflow of spring water. The lake local depth during transgression maxima did not exceed 20 m. Palynological and geochemical analyses indicate a rich and diversified assemblage of gymnosperm plants with a contribution of angiosperms, weeds and microbial biomass in the peat-forming suboxic to oxic coastal swamp environment. Maceral analysis of organic matter shows a prevalence of huminite, accompanied richly by inertinite in lignite and by liptinite in clay. The Pleistocene shift to terrestrial semiarid environment resulted in oxidizing groundwater conditions, with the reddening of sediments around a fluctuating groundwater table and the diagenetic transformation of bacteria-derived greigite into magnetite. In regional stratigraphy, the occurrence of Viviparus neumayri Brusina in the lower half of the succession indicates the Lower Paludina Beds of Dacian Stage (early Zanclean age). Other gastropods and certain ostracodes indicate transition to the Middle Paludina Beds of lower Romanian Stage (late Zanclean–early Piacenzian). The upper half of the succession lacks age-diagnostic fossils and is considered to represent Middle Paludina Beds with a possible relic of Upper Paludina Beds at the top.

Opis:
Widely distributed freshwater carbonate sediments, i.e., limestone, dolomitic limestone and dolomite, developed in inter-dune alkaline ponds of the Danube-Tisza Interfluve in the centre of the Carpathian Basin during the Holocene. The key parameters that determine the formation of any given type of carbonate mineral (calcite, dolomite) are temperature, evaporation rate, pH and ion concentrations, in addition to CO2 absorption by aquatic plants. CT analysis is capable of recording small-scale density variations attributable to compositional differences of sedimentary rocks. As the type and proportion of rock-forming minerals and other components is an artifact of past environmental and climatic conditions, CT values may act as potential palaeoenvironmental proxies. The present study compares variations in rock-forming components obtained for freshwater carbonates utilizing the CT method with already available geochemical and palaeoecological proxy data. Variations in molluscan ecology and isotope geochemistry, sedimentation times and CT-based rock density values all indicate the relevance of millennial-scale, climate-driven changes in carbonate formation. As previously observed, the emergence of colder conditions in the North Atlantic, which resulted in increased cyclonic activity and heavier rainfall in western Europe and the Danube watershed area between 10.3 and 9.3 kyr cal BP, resulted in the emergence of humid conditions favouring a rise in the groundwater table at our site and precipitation of calcite from pore waters as opposed to high-magnesium calcite. This is clearly reflected in a negative shift in CT density values in our dated rock samples.

Opis:
Species diversity of centrohelid heliozoans in different types of freshwater bodies (forest lakes, floodplain lakes, sphagnum bogs, and river) in the Middle Russian forest-steppe was studied. The morphology of cell coverings (scales and spicules) were observed using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. A total of 20 species of  centrohelid heliozoans from five families (Acanthocystidae, Pterocystidae, Raphidiophryidae, Raphidocystidae, and Choanocystidae) and six genera (Acanthocystis, Raineriophrys, Pterocystis, Raphidiophrys, Raphidocystis, and Choanocystis) as well as unidentified Centrohelea species and a Heterophrys-like organism were found. Morphological descriptions and electron micrographs are provided. The most common species were Acanthocystis nichollsi, Raphidiophrys capitata, and a Heterophrys-like organism. The highest species diversity was observed in terrace forest lakes, whereas the lowest was seen in sphagnum bogs. Four species (Acanthocystis costata, A. elenazhivotovae, A. mikrjukovii, and A. spinosa) were found for the first time since their original description. Three species (Acanthocystis spinosa, Raphidiophrys capitata, and Pterocystis pulchra) are new records for Russia. The distribution of the observed morphospecies confirms the cosmopolitanism of many centrohelids and highlights the importance of the type of water body and microbiotope in forming the species composition. The obtained data on the morphology of studied scales supplements our knowledge of the intraspecific variability of centrohelid heliozoans.

Opis:
Morphology, morphogenesis and molecular phylogeny of a freshwater oxytrichid ciliate, Aponotohymena isoaustralis n. sp. collected from Sanjay Lake (28°36′51″N, 77°18′14″E), Delhi, India, were studied. The described species is characterized by a flexible body, with body size (in vivo) of about 148 × 46 µm and yellowish green cortical granules. Morphological characters exhibit: undulating membranes in Notohymena–pattern; two macronuclei and absence of micronucleus (amicronucleate); about 36 adoral membranelles; 18 frontoventral-transverse (FVT) cirri; one right and one left marginal row separated posteriorly; 6 dorsal rows; 7 caudal cirri arranged in 2 + 2 + 3 pattern (constant). In the present study, a detailed description of all the developmental stages is also provided. Prominent distinguishing features of the new species are the absence of micronucleus, 7 caudal cirri (constant), yellowish green cortical granules aligned along the margins and irregularly distributed throughout the cell. They may also be randomly concentrated as clusters along the left margin and posterior end of the cell. Molecular phylogeny based on small subunit rDNA sequence data suggests sister relationship of Aponotohymena isoaustralis n. sp. with Notohymena apoaustralis and Aponotohymena australis (Notohymena australis) which cluster in a clade with Paraurostyla weissei and Paraurostyla coronata. Further analysis of nucleotide sequence of SSU rDNA also suggests that A. isoaustralis n. sp. is distinct from the type species A. australis.
