    Opis:
    This paper aims to integrate logical operators into frame-based semantics. Frames are semantic graphs that allow lexical meaning to be captured in a fine-grained way but that do not come with a natural way to integrate logical operators such as quantifiers. The approach we propose stems from the observation that modal logic is a powerful tool for describing relational structures, including frames. We use its hybrid logic extension in order to incorporate quantification and thereby allow for inference and reasoning. We integrate our approach into a type theoretic compositional semantics, formulated within Abstract Categorial Grammars. We also show how the key ingredients of hybrid logic, nominals and binders, can be used to model semantic coercion, such as the one induced by the begin predicate. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed syntax-semantics interface, all the examples can be run and tested with the Abstract Categorial Grammar development toolkit.

    The principal aim of this article is to present the author’s own analysis model for the creation of a holistic cognitive definition of ‘tolerance’, based on Alexander Ziem’s semantic frame theory. Starting with frame and its constituent elements (slots, fillers, default values), the author compares her own concept and Ziem’s model, demonstrating both similarities and differences that can be explained by various aims of the analysis. The last part discusses the advantages of the frame semantics perspective in the research, including contrastive research concerning the meaning of linguistic expressions.

    Semantics of Old Polish Beekeeping Terms: The Case of (po)łazić pszczoły/miód ‘Take Honey from the Bees’ in a Cognitive PerspectiveThis article aims to explain the process of terminologisation of the verb (po)łazić in beekeeping terminology. We present its stages and hypotheses concerning the semantics of the Old Polish term under consideration, including possible event schemas and its non-prepositional syntax. The analysis indicates that the terminologisation of word combinations with the verb (po)łazić in beekeeping terminology: (po)łazić pszczoły/miód ‘take honey from the bees’ involved the process of shifting the semantic dominant and, consequently, changing the event schema (“self-motion schema” → “caused motion schema” or “transfer”). On the level of syntactic analysis, we put forward a hypothesis about the possible origin of the non-prepositional structure generated as a result of transformation of the prepositional phrase: łazić po pszczoły/miód → połazić pszczoły/miód with a general meaning ‘perform the action directed at the singled-out object that changes its location as a result’.Semantyka staropolskich terminów bartniczych – na przykładzie (po)łazić pszczoły/miód – w ujęciu kognitywnym Celem pracy jest wyjaśnienie zjawiska terminologizacji czasownika (po)łazić w użyciu bartniczym – przedstawienie jej etapów oraz hipotez dotyczących semantyki badanego terminu staropolskiego, w tym realizowanych możliwych schematów zdarzeń, oraz jego bezprzyimkowej składni. Analiza pokazuje, że proces terminologizacji badanych połączeń wyrazowych: (po)łazić pszczoły/barć/miód polegał na przesuwaniu się dominanty znaczeniowej, a w konsekwencji zmiany schematu zdarzenia (samoprzemieszczanie → powodowanie ruchu lub przekazywanie). Z kolei w analizie składniowej badanego terminu postawiona została hipoteza o możliwym pochodzeniu konstrukcji bezprzyimkowej z przekształcenia formacji z wyrażeniem przyimkowym: łazić po pszczoły/ miód → połazić pszczoły/miód o znaczeniu ogólnym ‘wykonać daną czynność ukierunkowaną na wyróżniony obiekt, który w wyniku tej czynności zmienia swoją lokalizację’.

    The aim of this article is to present the assumptions underlying the construction and analysis of business terms in the dictionary of business terms of 1870-1914. All lexical units incorporated into the discussed dictionary are selected from a particular column of the Kraków daily newspaper “Czas”. The research into business terms taken originally from daily newspapers was facilitated by the prototype semantics theory and the concept of frames and scenes, the use of which enables the attribution of analyzed linguistic structures to real life objects as well as to a human being as a cognising subject. It is the prototype semantics theory that the article discusses first in the context of rules for the reconstruction of the semantic representation of terms incorporated into the dictionary of business terms of 1870-1914. The concept of frame semantics by Charles Fillmore is discussed later as a tool useful in the interpretation of the prepared glossary.

    This paper uses the terminology of Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1996; 2006) and a corpus-based method to investigate a pair of semantically similar constructions and the lexemes that occur in both of them. The method, referred to as distinctive-collexeme analysis (Gries and Stefanowitsch 2004a), seeks to identify lexemes that exhibit a strong preference for one construction as opposed to another: in other words, to uncover subtle distributional differences between two semantically or functionally near-equivalent constructions. On the basis of the case study dealing with the on the brink of- noun construction versus the on the verge of- noun construction, the paper shows that there are lexemes that prefer one of the investigated patterns over the other. Moreover, the results of the distinctive-collexeme analysis reveal that the frame-constructional semantics is a relevant factor in the choice between these two patterns.

    Assessing the success of a translated text is one of the controversial topics often discussed in the field of translation studies. The definition of a so-called successful translation is itself controversial. Therefore, for the purpose of this study, the success of a given translation may be defined as transmitting a similar, though rarely identical, semantic frame reference in the Target Language (TL) as was intended by the Source Language (SL) and may be quantified by comparing alternate translations and choosing the one with the highest number of equivalent frame references. One of the factors which could be considered detrimental to the production of a successful translation, as defined above, is the (un)translatability of cultural terms. Cultural terms, defined here as expressions referring to concepts or entities that are unique to a certain culture, are believed to be untranslatable. This paper uses Arabic visual frames referencing the Egyptian garment ǧal-labiy-ya (or ǧilbāb) as an example and argues that (un)translatability can be quantified using semantic frames based on the assumption that all SL terms have multiple frame references, some of which, mostly the ones indicating denotative meaning, have parallels in the TL while some others, mostly the ones indicating connotative meaning, do not. The degree of (un)translatability may, therefore, be quantifiable by observing which TL terms possess a higher rate of similar frame references in SL, which aids in the evaluation of translated texts in terms of relative equivalence and the degree to which the Target Text (TT) audience receives similar information to that received by the Source Text (ST) audience.

    Emotions are a central means of generating attention and thus help to generate and extend power of political actors. The example of Angela Merkel shows that the reversal, i.e. the renunciation of emotions, can also be a successful communication strategy. In contrast to the ideal type of the charismatic politician, the core of the ‘brand Merkel’ is the staging of non-staging. With an evaluation of two corpora, journalistic portraits on the one hand and her own statements made in interviews on the other, the ‘brand Merkel’ is illuminated from two perspectives. In particular, her handling of emotions illustrates the interlocking of self-image and external image, which is made possible by taking up and reinterpreting criticism.

    Held*innen sind in unserem kommunikativen Alltag allgegenwartig – und oft werden sie im Stile von Superhelden inszeniert. Hierdurch hat sich eine Superheldenikonografie etabliert, die Bedeutungsbildungsprozesse masgeblich beeinflusst. Sprache konstituiert unsere Wirklichkeit. Daher spiegeln sich im Gebrauch der Superheldenikonografie kulturelle Veranderungen wider, gleichzeitig tragt sie aber auch zur Uberfuhrung heldischer Vorstellungen in die Gegenwart bei. Insgesamt deuten die Untersuchungen darauf hin, dass Deutschland weniger eine „postheroische“, sondern vielmehr eine „superheroische Gesellschaft” ist.
    Heroes are omnipresent in our communicative everyday life – and they are often staged in the style of superheroes. In this way, a superhero iconography has been established, which has a significant influence on the process of creating meaning. Language constitutes our reality. Therefore, the use of superhero iconography reflects cultural changes, but at the same time it also contributes to the transfer of heroic ideas into the present. Overall, the research suggests that Germany is not so much a “post-heroic” society as a “super-heroic” society.

    This paper aims to investigate the what-cleft construction with adjectives and establish its structural, semantic, and distributional features by adopting frame semantics and usage-based construction grammar, exploiting the data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), and applying quantitative corpus-based methodology. To this end, the author extracts the occurrences of the What be ADJ be-construction from a large corpus of naturally-occurring data, determines its structural, semantic, distributional, and discourse-functional properties, and identifies adjectives that are strongly associated with the construction in question. The paper makes a significant contribution to a growing body of literature on the what-cleft construction by conducting a qualitative and quantitative analysis of one of its variants, a grammatical pattern with adjectives that has not been hitherto investigated in much detail.
    W niniejszym artykule autor stawia sobie za cel zbadanie konstrukcji what-cleft z przymiot-nikami i ustalenie jej cech strukturalnych, semantycznych i dystrybucyjnych poprzez za-stosowanie semantyki ramowej i gramatyki konstrukcji, wykorzystanie danych z korpusu (COCA) i użycie ilościowej metodologii korpusowej. W tym celu autor wydobywa wystąpie-nia konstrukcji z dużego korpusu naturalnie występujących danych, określa jej strukturalne, semantyczne, dystrybucyjne i dyskursowo-funkcjonalne właściwości oraz identyfikuje przy-miotniki, które są silnie związane z omawianą konstrukcją. Artykuł wnosi znaczący wkład do rosnącej literatury na temat konstrukcji what-cleft poprzez jakościową i ilościową analizę jednego z jej wariantów, konstrukcji z przymiotnikami, który nie był do tej pory szczegółowo badany.

    The grammar framework presented in this paper combines Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammar (LTAG) with a (de)compositional frame semantics. We introduce elementary constructions as pairs of elementary LTAG trees and decompositional frames. The linking between syntax and semantics can largely be captured by such construction since in LTAG, elementary trees represent full argument projections. Substitution and adjunction in the syntax then trigger the unification of the associated semantic frames, which are formally defined as base-labelled feature structures. Moreover, the system of elementary constructions is specified in a metagrammar by means of tree and frame descriptions. This metagrammatical factorization gives rise to a fine-grained decomposition of the semantic contributions of syntactic building blocks, and it allows us to separate lexical from constructional contributions and to carve out generalizations across constructions. In the second half of the paper, we apply the framework to the analysis of directed motion expressions and of the dative alternation in English, two well known examples of the interaction between lexical and constructional meaning.

    Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem metaphorischen Sprechen über Flucht und Vertreibung in einer Rede des damaligen Bundespräsidenten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Joachim Gauck. Es wird gezeigt, dass ein frame-semantischer Zugang zur Analyse von Metaphern fruchtbar ist. Anhand der Konzepte Emotionen und Heimat wird systematisch beschrieben, wie konkrete, greifbare Welterfahrungen genutzt werden, um abstrakte, nicht-greifbare Vorstellungen auszudrücken. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass diesen beiden Domänen beim Sprechen über Migrationsprozesse, die einen wiederkehrenden Faktor im Konzept der Transkulturalität bilden, eine zentrale Rolle zukommt.
    This article considers the metaphoric use of language in a speech on fleeing and displacement given by the then Federal President of Germany, Joachim Gauck. As evidenced in the study, the analysis of metaphor can benefit from a frame-semantic approach. Focusing on the concepts of Emotionen (‘emotions’) and Heimat (‘homeland’), the article systematically elaborates how concrete and tangible experiences are used to express abstract and non-tangible ideas. As discussed, the two concepts can play a crucial role when talking about migration as a transcultural phenomenon.

    Artykuł jest próbą zrekonstruowania semantycznych innowacji tworzonych w opozycji do konwencjonalnego obrazu świata, który wyraża się w kreacjach reklamowych redefinicji koncepcji piękna. Artykuł zawiera opis wewnętrznych relacji między segmentowymi relacjami (konotacjami), jakie zachodzą między leksemem piękno a innymi jednostkami lingwistycznymi (klauzule nominalne), które wywołują określony rodzaj skojarzeń (znaczeń) i pokazują komercyjne sposoby oceny pojęć, mogących istnieć dzięki różnym strategiom komunikacyjnym i językowym. W celu opisania tego zagadnienia zastosowano teorię pól semantycznych i wybranych elementów koncepcji ram interpretacyjnych wraz z odpowiednią metodologią.
    This article is an attempt to reconstruct the semantic innovations created in opposition to the conventional picture of the world which is expressed in advertising creations of the redefinitions of the beauty concept. The paper includes a description of inner relations between the segmental relationships (connotations) which happen between the lexeme beauty and other linguistic units (nominal clauses), which evoke a specified type of associations (meanings) and show commercial ways of evaluation of concepts which can exist by the use of various communication and linguistic strategies. In order to describe this issue a theory of semantic fields and the selected elements of the interpretative frames concept together with appropriate methodology were applied.

    W przestrzeni publicznej istnieją różnorodne sposoby wyrażania bycia społecznością olimpijską, zjednoczonej ideami barona Pierre’a de Coubertina. Taki charakter mają znicz olimpijski, pięć kółek olimpijskich, flaga olimpijska i wiele znaków graficznych, werbalnych i dźwiękowych, obecnych w symbolicznej przestrzeni publicznej. Jednym z tego rodzaju spajających „olimpijczyków” komunikatów miały być także muzyka, piosenki i hymn olimpijski. Kilkadziesiąt piosenek, które przez ostatnie 30 lat były kojarzone z igrzyskami opiera się na semantyce emocji i interpretacji ducha, płomienia, snu, marzeń, które w zależności od autora tekstu mają bardziej lub tylko nieco mniej sztampowy charakter. Nie są zbyt gęste semantycznie i pragmatycznie, ale aktywują różne konteksty i ramy interpretacyjne oraz są niedookreślone tematycznie (nie wiadomo często, czy są o sporcie czy o miłości). Z pewnością jest w nich komunikacja nie wprost, a kooperacja opiera się na presupozycjach i implikaturach.
    In public space there is a variety of means to express the feeling of belonging to the Olympic community united by the ideas of Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The Olympic torch, five Olympic circles and the Olympic flag all represent this, so do many graphic, verbal and sound signs present in the symbolic public space. One of such messages uniting ‘the Olympians’ would be music, Olympic songs and the Olympic anthem. The several dozens of songs associated with the Olympic games throughout last 30 years are based on the semantics of emotion and the interpretation of spirit, flame, dream which, depending on the author, are more or less clichéd. They are not overly substantial in semantic and pragmatic aspect, but they do activate different contexts and interpretational frames; they are also vague in terms of the theme (it is often unclear whether they are about sports or love). Surely the communication in them is not direct and cooperation is based on presuppositions and implications.

    In the presented analyses we propose a formal complement to a certain version of the semantics of possible worlds inspired by Leibniz’s ideas and provide an adequate logic of it. As the starting point we take the approach of Benson Mates (Leibniz on possible worlds). Mates refers to Leibniz’ philosophy, but also uses tools of contemporary semantics of possible worlds and elaborates on an original conception of predication due to which possible worlds can be identified with collections of certain concepts, and not individuals. We complete a fragmentary description given by Mates in order to analyze if his conception allows for the establishment of this specific idea of a possible world. Our first step is to define a notion of the individual concept and describe possible world semantics in which possible worlds consist of individual concepts of compossible individuals (s-worlds). Our second step is to choose some version of modal free logic with the identity (S5MFLID), which is complete in our reformulation of Mates’ semantics. The connections between standard interpretation of S5MFLID and semantics inspired by Mates show that our logic does not distinguish s-worlds from i-worlds – counterparts of s-worlds that are collections of individuals.
