Opis:
In this work we present the design and the manufacturing processes, as well as the acoustics standard- ization tests, of an acoustic barrier formed by a set of multi-phenomena cylindrical scatterers. Periodic arrangements of acoustic scatterers embedded in a fluid medium with different physical properties are usually called Sonic Crystals. The multiple scattering of waves inside these structures leads to attenuation bands related to the periodicity of the structure by means of Bragg scattering. In order to design the acoustic barrier, two strategies have been used: First, the arrangement of scatterers is based on fractal geometries to maximize the Bragg scattering; second, multi-phenomena scatterers with several noise con- trol mechanisms, as resonances or absorption, are designed and used to construct the periodic array. The acoustic barrier reported in this work provides a high technological solution in the field of noise control.

Opis:
The knowledge whether and how chemical species react with tissues is important because of protection against harmful factors, diagnose of dermatological diseases, validation of dermatological procedures as well as effectiveness of topical therapies. In presented work the effects of chemical agents on plates of human fingernails were studied using Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Apart from that, mapping of the elastic properties of the nails was also carried out. To obtain reliable measures of spatial evolution of the surface variations, recorded images were analyzed in terms of scaling invariance brought by fractal geometry, instead of common though not unique statistical measures.

Opis:
In the design of asphalt mixtures for paving, the choice of components has a remarkable importance, as requirements of quality and durability must be assured in use, guaranteeing adequate standards of safety and comfort. In this paper, an approach of analysis on the aggregate materials using fractal geometry is proposed. Following an analytical and an experimental approach, it was possible to find a correlation between characteristics of the asphalt concrete (specific gravity and porosity) and the fractal dimension of the aggregate mixtures. The studies revealed that this approach allows to draw the optimal fractal dimension and, consequently, it can be used to choose an appropriate aggregate gradation for the specific application; once the appropriate initial physical parameters are finalized. This fractal approach could be employed for predicting the porosity of mixed asphalt concretes, given as input the fractal characteristics of the aggregate mixtures of the concrete materials.

Opis:
This literature survey highlights the possible influences of surface roughness parameters on functional properties of surfaces produced by different finishing operations. The prediction of such functional properties as fatigue, sealing capacity, adhesion, friction, wear and corrosion resistance based on five groups of spatial (S) roughness parameters is overviewed. In contrast, traditional approach based on 2D roughness parameters is provided. Some real 3D surface topographies produced with desired functional properties by finishing cutting and abrasive operations are characterized. This survey confirms the vital role of machined surfaces in the functionality of machine components.
