This article focuses on the determinants of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) in Russia. The article briefly describes the historical context of foreign investment policymaking in Russia since the beginning of the economic transition to an open market economy after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. When compared to other developing countries, Russia's FDI stocks continue to lag despite a set of proactive measures undertaken by the national government. Following the literature review, the most commonly cited determinants explaining inward FDI in Russia include market size, labour productivity, trade and investment barriers, domestic exchange rate, rule of law and institutional framework.

An economic regime might take the form in which extractive institutions do not allow for the proper development of foreign direct investment. In consequence these countries cannot fully benefit from economic aspects of globalization and increasing standards of living. This is the case of Ukraine, a country with very good location advantages and a well-educated workforce that attracts only the murky type of FDI. It is a country that is troubled by corruption and political instability but at the same time a country that began the path to finding its national identity by fighting against extractive institutions.

This paper has been devoted to analyzing the implications of the economic crisis, which was triggered by the mortgage credit defaults in the United States in the summer 2007, on the flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the world. The issue has not been broadly studied in the economic literature and the sufficient explanation has not been delivered yet. The problem is essential due to the significant influence of the crises on reshaping the global architecture. The distinctive feature of this paper is focusing on the rising power of emerging economies as new sources of FDI in the distressed world economy. Main numerical analysis was conducted using preliminary data on FDI in year 2009 and beginning of year 2010.

The paper analyses foreign direct investment outflows from the European Union to the ASEAN countries. The region of Southeast Asia is very important for the EU in terms of economic cooperation. Previous relations between the European Union and ASEAN countries laid the foundations and became the basis for subsequent business initiatives, first encompassing trade and later investment initiatives. Today the liberalisation of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows is taking place, which has a positive impact on the increase in exports of ASEAN countries and in turn affects the economic development of these countries. The European Union deepens its economic ties with the region through FDI, which results in increased economic interdependence

Opis:
The author looks at foreign direct investment in Estonia and discusses its implications for the country’s economy. The analysis covers the 1994-2004 period and is based on a combination of analytical and descriptive methods. To obtain a more complete picture of foreign capital involvement in Estonia, which was once part of the Soviet Union, the author discusses factors that influence the country’s investment attractiveness. She concludes that Estonia’s market transformation has contributed to a major acceleration in the inflow of FDI to this country. FDI in Estonia has been characterized by a strong concentration, both in terms of the investors’ country of origin and the sectors in which they become involved, Sobańska notes. Scandinavian companies, primarily those from Sweden as well as Finland, have dominated among foreign direct investors in Estonia, while the role of investors from Central and Eastern Europe in Estonia’s overall FDI performance has been marginal. Since 1998 the financial sector has been the main focus of foreign direct investment in Estonia. Foreign investors have also contributed to the restructuring of the country’s corporate sector. The inflow of foreign capital has enabled Estonia to join the international trade system. However, despite the generally positive role of FDI in the country’s development, the strong concentration of foreign capital leads to worries about the permanence of Estonia’s economic achievements. A potential economic crisis in Scandinavia could easily lead to a situation in which FDI would bring negative market trends to Estonia’s fledgling economy.

Opis:
Foreign direct investment (FDI), its motives, modes and location choice constitute key subjects in theory and research in international business, due to their long-term consequences for firm competitiveness. The determinants of results achieved in foreign markets can therefore be described as a fundamental research area, which specifically includes studies on FDI performance. In spite of its long tradition and methodical advancement, extant research show numerous inconsist-encies and ambiguous findings. In both international and Polish literature, no complex summary of extant knowledge on FDI performance determinants can be found, which would allow for the consolidation and evaluation of earlier findings. The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a structured review of 95 studies on performance of foreign subsidiaries. Within extant studies, four main research streams were identified, focusing on FDI mode choice, resource determinants on a firm and subsidiary level, host-country characteristics and corporate strategy. Previous research has not adequately considered the role of expansion motives for evaluating FDI performance. Future studies should also to a greater extent account for a differentiated role of firm resources, particularly various types of international experience, as applied in host countries at different levels of economic and institutional development. Moreover, a more holistic FDI performance analysis requires a simultaneous consideration of financial and non-financial dimensions of a foreign subsidiary's competitive position. Based on the outcomes of the present review, areas for further studies have been proposed, especially as regards the context of outward FDI, increasingly undertaken by Polish companies, and its specific character.

The main goal of the paper is to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) in advanced business services sector on economic development. We analyse the topic on the regional level as FDI in Poland is not equally distributed across the country. In order to investigate the research problem we estimate linear regression model using panel data. The dependent variable is the value of GDP per capita as the indicator of economic development. The most important independent variable from the point of view of the main objective of the paper is the number of foreign-owned advanced business services firms. This variable will be also lagged to control time necessary for investment to materialise and influence the economy. The main conclusion of the analysis of data over the period of 10 years is that there is a positive influence of operations of foreign-owned firms in the analysed sector on the economic growth of particular regions in Poland.

W części empirycznej przedstawiono wyniki badań firmy doradczej Ernst & Young, dotyczące ryzyka lokalizacji BIZ w Polsce w kontekście przepływów kapitałowych w Europie i na świecie.
The theoretical part of the paper presents the essence of the concept of the location of foreign direct investment (FDI). Investment attractiveness is defined and the basic factors thereof affecting the extent and level of risk related to the FDI location are characterized. The factors include transport availability, labour costs, the size and quality of labour resources, the product marketability, the level of the economic and social infrastructure development, the level of economic development, the level of general security and the investor oriented activity of the area. The empirical part presents the results of the study conducted by the Ernst & Young consultancy company on the risk related to the FDI location in Poland in the context of capital flows in Europe and worldwide.

Opis:
The aim of this study, conducted as part of the project “Polish direct investment in the mature markets of Western Europe”, was to propose a new concept, along the lines of a grounded theory, and emerging from the empirical data, seeking to explain the phenomenon of Polish investment abroad. Following methodological guidelines (GTM, or grounded theory method), including the steps of sampling, sorting and coding data, resulted in an analytic scheme that may provide a framework for the study of Polish FDI (foreign direct investment), particularly in the Western Europe. The results indicate that foreign expansion is sometimes regarded as a guarantee of a firm’s continued existence in Poland and beyond. A certain syncretism, or dialectic nature, of Polish investment in the markets of Western Europe, which may reflect the specific nature of FDI and may serve as a practical measure of this “diversity,” was identified in the course of this work. The results should enrich the existing literature concerning the relatively weakly conceptualized categories of Polish foreign investment and should contribute to the further development of research on this issue.

Intra-industry trade (IIT) has been widely investigated among developed countries. Main factors influencing the simultaneous flows of exports and imports were also identified for the group of advanced economies. Less attention was paid to the trade of emerging countries. Therefore, the author analysed bilateral trade between Poland and its main trading partners over the period 2000-2007. The analysis of IIT was conducted at the five-digit SITC products. Among factors influencing intensity of IIT the role of FDI was placed in the centre of the investigation.

During the last two decades, Poland has become a large recipient of inward foreign direct investment (FDI). This article uses standard panel data techniques to study empirically the determinants of inward FDI in Poland during the period 1996–2015 made by multinational enterprises coming from the old European Union (EU)-15 member states. The estimated specification is derived from the knowledge-capital (KC) model and includes two types of capital: human and physical. The assembled empirical evidence points to the horizontal motive as the primary reason for undertaking FDI in Poland by multinational firms based in the old EU-15 member states. Moreover, the KC model does not seem to explain better the pattern of inward FDI in Poland compared to the standard ad hoc gravity model of international capital mobility.

This study aims to investigate the impact of savings and foreign direct investment on economic growth in Poland. Savings play an important role in achieving sustainable growth. High saving rates are also an important tool to increase resilience to financial shocks. The economic climate that emerged following the financial crisis revealed problems with the economy of Poland to obtain foreign financing. The decrease in foreign direct investment has led to an unpredictable economic environment for developing countries such as Poland. The decrease in foreign direct investment has led to lower growth rates for an emerging market such as the economy of Poland. The relationship economic growth rate, saving and foreign direct investment are examined for Poland over the period 1992-2016 by using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach. According to this approach there is a cointegration relationship between the series and a 1% increase in savings which leads to a 0.81% increase on economic growth rate. Also a 1% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) leads to a 1.52% increase in the economic growth rate.

Opis:
Currency exchange risk is one of the major risks foreign investors may be exposed to while investing overseas. Such risk takes place when the host state’s currency appreciates or depreciates in value affecting negatively the investor’s investment. Since investors are concerned with losing the value of the host state’s currency once an investment is made using that currency, it might be helpful for them to clearly understand when such risk occurs due to demand on the currency or due to manipulation of the host state in the exchange rates. For that, the paper clearly defines the nature of currency exchange risk in foreign direct investment where such financial risk may easily be regarded as a political one. The paper aims to add value through introducing a new approach in understanding the components that makes currency exchange risk considered as purely political risk or as purely financial. It aims to introduce the cases where such threat may be regarded as a political financial risk in order to assist investors in understanding what kind of a risk they could experience. The paper proves that currency exchange threat may take one of three forms through examining nature of financial regulations in host states and through probing recent cases settled by ICSID.

The aim of this study is to examine the long run equilibrium relationship between regulation and FDI inflows in Nigeria over the period of 1990 to 2016 which past studies have failed to explore. Consequently, the study utilized data from UNCTAD, World Bank database, CBN Statistical Bulletin and Cointegration, DOLS and Granger Causality approach was used to address the objective of this study. However, the major findings in this study are summarized as follows. Government effectiveness, rule of law and inflation rate have a significant positive relationship with FDI inflows in Nigeria in the long run, apart from regulation quality that is not significant. This implies that regulation is favorable to the inflows of cross border investment in the country. In addition, there is a unidirectional feedback relationship which runs from FDI inflows to regulation quality and one way feedback relationship runs from the rule of law to government effective-ness in the country. Finally, due to the findings that emerged from this study, the following recommendations are made for the policy makers, investors and future researchers in Nigeria that when attraction of FDI inflows are the target of the policy makers in the country, improving variables like rule of law, government effectiveness and regulation quality will induce the inflows of cross border investment accordingly in the long run. Also, the Nigerian government should be committed to the provision of a sound business environment in the form of good government regulations to ensure rapid inflows of FDI in the country.

The paper examines the nature of China’s economic activities in Africa in three dimensions: merchandise trade, foreign direct investment, and aid. These are three main channels through which China’s presence on the continent affects Africa’s economic growth and development. China’s economic relations with Africa are, to a large extent, driven by Chinese demand for natural resources, especially oil and minerals. It is the most visible in Sino-African trade, where fuels alone account for about two thirds of China’s imports from Africa. Natural resource extraction has also significant impact on Chinese decisions regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) and aid. Mutual cooperation between China and Africa has brought obvious advantages for both sides. For African countries, closer trade relations with China have been associated with gains in the form of lower import prices and improving terms of trade. Chinese FDI in non-extractive sectors has become a chance for economic diversification on the African continent. China’s aid and FDI can significantly contribute to the development of local infrastructure and technology upgrading. However, China’s economic presence on the continent has also its negative side. African countries may suffer, for example, from trade related losses, unfair competition or further debt accumulation.

Opis:
The paper reviews empirical studies on how various location factors influence foreign direct investment (FDI). The author focuses on some recent research and takes into account determinants such as market size, market growth, labor costs, labor quality, openness to trade, geographic distance, taxes, country risk, and corruption. These factors do not represent a closed set of factors that affect FDI location decisions, but are most frequently considered, Wawrzyniak says. Research theories list many factors that can influence the location of FDI. These include economic determinants (that depend on the type of FDI) as well as the policy framework for FDI and business facilitation. Moreover, these FDI determinants tend to change over time, Wawrzyniak says, and some of them, such as privatization of transition economies, are particularly important to some countries and regions. Empirical studies on the impact of various determinants on the location of FDI are inconclusive because different authors have reported different results. Some researchers say that a specific factor has a positive influence on FDI, while others argue the opposite. Still others believe that this particular factor is statistically insignificant. However, not all the potential determinants of FDI are equally controversial, Wawrzyniak says. The results of empirical research on different location factors show a varying level of consistency. They are generally more consistent in the case of factors such as market size and less consistent in the case of labor costs, for example.

Opis:
Derive the importance of foreign direct investment in the world, particularly in the developing countries. FDI is critical for the developing countries which need multinational funding and expertise to expand, give structure, and guide their will to boost manufacturing and service sectors. Due to its role in promoting the growth and development wheel, providing financial resources complementary to national savings, and contributing to the transfer of technology and skills associated with modern production methods, it has emerged as one of the most significant sources of support for development. As the deteriorating economic conditions of developing countries did not leave them with many options or other solutions, their only option was to open their economies. The research touches on multiple subjects such as: Statistical Decision Theory by using statistical data to prove some of the research points, Multidimensional Statistical Analysis, Financial Econometrics which includes the financial related remarks as GDP part of the research, etc. In this sense, the goals of this paper are to highlight the importance of FDI in achieving the development in developing countries.
