Artykuł jest próbą opisu i porównania pierwszej fali emigracji zarobkowej z końca XIX wieku i podobnej do niej drugiej fali z końca XX wieku, wzmocnionej w 2004 roku przystąpieniem Polski do Unii Europejskiej oraz wskazania różnic i podobieństw między nimi. Pierwsza fala została opisana przez ważnych pisarzy pozytywistycznych, druga przez samą siebie. Na podstawie tych tekstów autor bada takie kategorie, jak patriotyzm, ksenofobia, religijność, obyczajowość, język itp.
The article  “The First and the Last Emigration” is an attempt to describe the differences and similarities between the first wave of economic emigration from the late nineteenth century and a similar wave from the end of the 20th century, increased in 2004 after Poland joined the European Union. On the basis of literary texts - in the first case by the main positivist writers, and in the second by numerous texts written by migrants themselves - the author examines issues such as the place and function of religion in emigrant circles, the categories of patriotism, xenophobia, tribalism, language and identity of emigrants.

Vladimir Nabokov’s unfavourable review of Boris Poplavsky’s volume of poetry Flags becomes a starting point of presenting different ways of perceiving the world by the two artists. Their poetry reflects the vision of the world of each author. The article not only explains reasons of differences in percepting the world, which result from the authors’ youthful experiences and vicissitudes, but also states why Vladimir Nabokov, after 20 years, changed his opinion about artistic works of Boris Poplavsky.

Since the first years before the post-revolutionary emigration („the first wave”), the problem of the special assignment given by history appeared. Authors of the emigration literature understood its mission differently, however, they did agree on this one point: the principle of artistic freedom is the underlying reason for the emigrants’ literature. Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

The aim of the article is to present The Warsaw Diary by Zinaida Gippius, published in 1969 and translated into Polish by Henryk Chłystowski (2010). Based on the analysis of Russian and Polish versions of the book, it can be concluded that Chłystowski retains in his translation four dimensions of the diary as a historical document: facts, opinions, author’s personal feelings and her subjective mentality.

The transformations in Russian satirical literature conditioned by the difficult emigration situation were reflected in the works of Arkady Averchenko, one of the most significant satirists of pre-revolutionary Russia. In his short stories created in exile, the writer showed the problems and dilemmas that his fellow-countrymen had to face abroad, mainly in Constantinople and Prague. The feeling of homelessness, loneliness and uprooting that accompanied the emigrants constantly intensified the need for self-identification in a foreign culture, which was demonstrated in manifesting their national distinctiveness, confronting new customs and idealizing the Russian past. By immortalizing the mood, spiritual life and living conditions as well as a specific metamorphosis of Russian emigrants, Averchenko did not forget about their vices. Therefore, the short stories of the emigration period, in which the writer willingly combined elements of comedy and tragedy, were saturated with self-irony, pain and bitter reflection, skillfully hidden under the mask of humour and satire.

This article deals with the implications of Alexander Vertinsky stay in Poland in the 1920s. Literary works of this representative of the first wave of Russian emigration enjoyed great popularity in the interwar period in Poland. A well-known Russian bard, Alexander Vertinsky, like many other representatives of the first wave of Russian emigration, left behind his unfinished memoirs in which he writes of over two decades of homeless wandering around the world (1920-1943). During that time he stayed, among others, in many European countries, the USA and China. And it was in Shanghai in the early 1940s that the singer began to write down his reminiscences. After returning to his homeland, Vertinsky continued his literary work, which undoubtedly left its mark on the content of memoirs. Nevertheless, the leitmotif of Vertinsky’s memoirs is both the image of old Russia scented with nostalgic feelings, and of Russian emigrants embodying his homeland.

В данной статье изучаются некоторые принципы автобиографизма набоковской геопоэтики, которые заложены не только в семантике названия про-изведения, но также прослеживаются в структуре текста и его структурирующих тематических мотивах (воображаемое путешествие в прошлое, образ заснеженной России эпохи Серебряного века, эмиграция как послание в изгнании). Текстоло-гический анализ автобиографии Другие берега показывает важность концептов пространства, времени и памяти, персонифицированного в образе персонажа Мне-мозины, для осмысления географической жизнетворческой поэтики эмиграции. Исторический ход времени, разрушенный Русской революцией, создает независимые блоки памяти в процессе творческой работы автобиографа. Парадокс литературной памяти заключается в том, чтобы сохранить непрерывность времени и в то же время обеспечить его исторически-эпохальную разрывность и делимость. Биографиче-ский и поэтический путь представлен у В. Набокова как восхождение от прошлого к настоящему-будущему, от прожитого к воображаемому, от биографического к поэтическому, пространство жизни превращается в художественное пространство.
Vladimir Nabokov’s autobiography Other Shores written in Russian and edited in 1954 by an émigré publishing house serves as a good example for considering the concept of geopoetics based on the example of the cultural and historical phenome-non of the first wave of emigration. The paper intends to study the poetics of Nabokov’s autobiography, which is not only laid down in the semantic meanings of the title of the work but also can be traced in the structure of the text and its structuring thematic motifs (travels in childhood, the image of Russia, emigration, exile, etc.).

Vladimir Varshavsky – a representative of the younger generation of the first wave Russian emigration – went down in the history of literature as the author of the memoirs “The Unnoticed Generation”, dedicated to his generation. The article is an analysis of Varshavsky’s journals and an attempt to recreate his viewpoint on the antagonisms dividing the younger and the older gener-ation of émigrés. The paper also contains a description of polemics in the Russian émigré society which were generated after Varshavsky’s book was published.
