Opis:
Nowadays, various small specimen test techniques have gained wide popularity and appreciation among researchers as they offer undoubtful benefits in terms of structural material characterisation. This paper focuses on small punch tests (SPTs) performed on small-sized disc specimens to assess the mechanical properties of 14Cr oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel. A numerical model was established to support experimental data and gain deeper insight into complex strain states developing in a deformed specimen. Modern evaluation procedures were discussed for obtaining mechanical properties from the small punch force-deflection response and were compared with the literature. Applicability and universality of those relations at different test conditions were also studied. It appeared that different ball diameters used had negligible influence on yield point but strongly affected ultimate strength estimation. It was found that friction belongs to decisive factors determining strain distribution in samples, as dry conditions increase the peak strain and move its location farther from the punch pole.

Opis:
Laser-generated surface patterns provide the means for local mechanical interlocking between the joined materials, tunes the wettability of surfaces that come in contact, and generally are the main factor for bonding strength enhancement, especially between dissimilar materials. This paper presents the influence of different patterning overlays generated with a pulsed laser on the surface of stainless-steel sheets. For all experiments, an overlapping degree of 90% has been chosen between three different patterns, while the engraving speed, pulse frequency and number of passes have varied. The textured surfaces’ morphology was assessed through optical microscopy, and the roughness of the surfaces was correlated with the corresponding experimental parameters. The results have indicated promising insights for joining stainless steel to plastic materials, which is otherwise difficult to assess through usual welding techniques.

Ferrtic/martensitic and ODS steels were fabricated by the mechanical alloying process, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The 9Cr-1W and 9Cr-1W-0.3Ti-0.35Y2 O3 (in wt.%) steels were prepared by the same fabrication process such as mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing, and hot rolling processes. A microstructural observation of these steels indicated that the Ti and Y2 O3 additions to 9Cr-1W steel were significantly effective to refine the grain size and form nano-sized Y-Ti-O oxide particles. As a result, the tensile strengths at room and elevated temperatures were considerably enhanced. Considerable improvement of the creep resistances at 700°C was also evaluated. It is thus concluded that 9Cr-1W ODS steel with Ti and Y2 O3 additions would be very effective in improving the mechanical properties especially at elevated temperatures.

Opis:
In the present paper, elemental Fe, Cr and Ni powders were used to fabricate nano-structured duplex and ferritic stainless steel powders by using high energy planetary ball milling. We have studied the effect of milling atmosphere like wet (toluene) and dry (argon) milling of elemental Fe-18Cr-13Ni (duplex) and Fe-17Cr-1Ni (ferritic) powders for 10 h in a dual drive planetary mill. Stearic acid of 1wt.% was added during milling to avoid agglomeration. The dry and wet milled duplex and ferritic stainless steel powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and particle size analysis techniques. We have found that both the milling atmospheres have great influence in controlling the final particle morphology, size and phase evolution during milling. It was reported that dry milling is more effective in reducing particle size than the wet milling. The Nelson-Riley method of extrapolation was used to calculate the precise lattice parameter and Williamson-Hall method was used to calculate the crystallite size and lattice strain of both the stainless steel milled in argon atmosphere. Dry milled duplex and ferritic stainless steel were then consolidated by conventional sintering method at 1100, 1200 and 1300°C temperatures under argon atmosphere for 1 hour.

Exhaust systems are susceptible to in-service wear because of their exposition to the very aggressive corrosive environment. Various stainless steels grades (mostly ferritic and austenitic, but also martensitic and duplex) and protective coatings are currently used for exhaust system elements to increase their aestetics and corrosion resistance. This article focuses on evaluation and comparison of the common corrosion properties of two stainless steels with different microstructures (ferritic and austenitic) used for exhaust system components at the low ambient temperature (35 °C). An aggressive acidic corrosion solution for electrochemical cyclic potentiodynamic tests (ASTM G61) was chosen to simulate partly inner (condensate) and also external environment (reaction of exhaust gases with water, chlorides in solution after winter road maintenance). Exposure tests of the pitting corrosion resistance were performed according to ASTM G48 standard method.

Opis:
In this study, ODS ferritic stainless steels were fabricated using a commercial alloy powder, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were studied to develop the advanced structural materials for high temperature service applications. Mechanical alloying and uniaxial hot pressing processes were employed to produce the ODS ferritic stainless steels. It was revealed that oxide particles in the ODS stainless steels were composed of Y-Si-O, Y-Ti-Si-O, and Y-Hf-Si-O complex oxides were observed depending on minor alloying elements, Ti and Hf. The ODS ferritic stainless steel with a Hf addition presented ultra-fine grains with uniform distributions of fine complex oxide particles which located in grains and on the grain boundaries. These favorable microstructures led to superior tensile properties than commercial stainless steel and ODS ferritic steel with Ti addition at elevated temperature.

The dissimilar welds of AISI 304 to AISI 430 stainless steel was investigated by using gas tungsten arc welding. Three filler metals including ER309L, ER316L and ER2594 were applied. The weakest region of the welds was the heat affected zone of 430 stainless steel due to the formation of martensite. Also, the wide grain growth zone was observed in this side. The ferrite number for type 309L, 316L and 2594 weld metals was about 15, 32 and 57, respectively. The hardness and tensile strength values of the weld metals were higher than that of the heat affected zones and the base metals. The ferrite presented higher hardness values than the austenite in type 316L and 309L joints; while the hardness of austenite and ferrite was comparable in type 2594 weld metal.

The microstructure and corrosion properties of spark plasma sintered yttria dispersed and yttria free duplex and ferritic stainless samples were studied. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) was carried out at 1000°C by applying 50 MPa pressure with holding time of 5 minutes. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) tests were employed to evaluate pitting corrosion resistance of the samples. Corrosion studies were carried out in 0.5, 1 and 2 M concentration of NaCl and H2SO4solutions at different quiet time of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 seconds. Yttria dispersed stainless steel samples show more resistance to corrosion than yttria free stainless steel samples. Pitting potential decreases with increase in reaction time from 2 to 10 seconds. Similarly, as concentration of NaCl and H2SO4 increases from 0.5 M to 2 M the corrosion resistance decrements due to the availability of more Cl¯ and SO42¯ ions at higher concentration.

The effects of heat transport phenomena and deformation gradient through the sheet cross-section on the microstructure, texture and magnetic properties of non-oriented Fe-Si steel were investigated. In order to achieve desired conditions for the steel microstructural and textural parameters improvement, a temper rolling process at elevated temperature was examined in combination with subsequent short term annealing, employing fast heating rate in laboratory conditions. The experimental material was represented by conventional medium silicon, vacuum degassed non-oriented steel that was taken directly from industrial line after final annealing. Performed electron back scattered diffraction measurements revealed that the experimental steel, treated by our proposed thermomechanical treatment, was characterized by coarse-grained microstructure with enhanced intensity of rotating cube texture. The magnetic losses of experimental samples were measured in ac magnetic field with 50 Hz frequency on the toroid with external and internal diameters of 25 mm and 15 mm, respectively. These measurements with magnetic field intensity of 2500 A/m showed that the application of our suggested treatment led to clear power losses reduction of the investigated material from initial 9.9 W/kg to 6.4 W/kg, i.e. by more than 35%.

Opis:
Cavitation is a one of many wear mechanisms which are related to the flow of liquid. It is one of the most destructive wear methods for stainless materials. The local changes in the pressure of the liquid stream related to the flow across the metal component cause straightening of the surface area, as well as its erosion and the formation of pits on the surface layer. The erosion value of cavitation is related to the material’s microstructure, the geometry of the element, the phase composition of the material and the surface roughness. In this paper the investigation of the cavitation process for duplex stainless steel has been performed. Samples examined in the first stages of the experiments were not significantly changed, but after a long time the hardness increase was very visible. The result of the cavitation was also cracking along the interphase boundaries, which resulted in the chipping of the material. One of the most important results was a description of the change in the wear mechanisms and its intensity during the cavitation exposure time. At first plastic micro deformation of the material’s surface occurred, then the plastic deformation increased significantly and after some time this resulted in erosion of the material and interfacial boundary decohesion; these two effects increased simultaneously. The last of the mechanisms was mechanical destabilization of the austenite, but the clear result of the mechanical destabilization of the austenite was only observed in the last sample. Martensitic transformation of the material changed the material’s mechanical properties, but for the stainless steels this resulted in electrochemical corrosion of the material, especially through the formation of an electrochemical potential between austenite and martensite.

This article describes the way of extending the durability of reinforced concrete structure by using stainless steel instead of traditional carbon steel. The term „stainless steel” was first explained and three types of steel structure used as reinforcement for concrete were described: austenitic, ferritic and duplex. Mechanical and physical properties of these steels were discussed, and then the course and effects of their corrosion degradation caused by different levels of chloride concentrations in concrete were compared. The summary presents an interesting example of the use of austenitic steel reinforcement in a responsible concrete structure.

Opis:
Increasing development of civilization encourages the search for modern engineering materials. At present, very interesting and promising materials are sintered stainless steels that are considered to be the most rapidly developing group of materials, which is related to the demand for materials with good mechanical properties and high resistance to corrosive agents. Taking into account sintered austenitic–ferritic steels, it is possibile to obtain a structure with different proportions of the two basic structural components. The main problem limiting the applicability of sintered stainless steels is porosity, which deteriorates not only the strength properties but also the usability as compared to their cast and materials after plastic working. Extremely valuable factors influencing tribological properties are the chemical composition, proportion of individual powders and sintering conditions. In this study, the microstructure and tribological properties of sintered stainless steels obtained by sintering in different proportions of 316L austenitic steel and 409L ferritic steel were compared. The abrasion wear resistance test for individual sintered steels was performed by pin-on-disc method.

Niezwykle cennymi czynnikami wpływającymi na własności tribologiczne są skład chemiczny, udział poszczególnych proszków oraz warunki spiekania. W niniejszym opracowaniu dokonano porównania mikrostruktury i własności tribologicznych spiekanych stali nierdzewnych, uzyskanych poprzez spiekanie w różnych proporcjach stali austenitycznej 316L oraz stali ferrytycznej 409L. The oxidation kinetics of forged 12Cr-MoVW steel was investigated in an air (N2+O2) atmosphere at 873-1073 K (Δ50 K) using thermogravimetric analysis. The oxidized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, and the surface and cross-sectional morphologies were examined using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The forged 12Cr-MoVW steel samples exhibited parabolic behavior and a low oxidation rate compared with their as-cast counterparts. A protective oxide layer was uniformly formed at relatively low temperature (≤973 K) for the forged samples, which thus exhibited better oxidation resistance than the as-cast ones. These oxides are considered solid-solution compounds such as (Fe, Cr)2O3.
