Opis:
Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been applied for many years in the production of pigs to reduce the number of diarrhoea in weaned piglets. In June 2022, the European Union banned the use of zinc oxide (ZnO) in pig feed. According to scientific reports, the may reason was the accumulation of this microelement in the environment of pig production. It has been shown that frequent application of ZnO can lead to increased antibiotic resistance in pathogenic swine microflora. The main alternatives to ZnO are probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, essential oils, and liquid feeding systems. Alternatives to ZnO can be successfully used in pig production to reduce the number of diarrhoea among piglets during the postweaning period. Additional reports indicated that bacteriophage supplementation has a positive effect on the health of pigs. The article provides an overview of current ZnO substitutes that can be used in pig farming.

Introduction and aim. Childhood hypertension is an important precursor to adult hypertension. This study was used to investigate blood pressure level and nutritional status of pupils in public primary schools that were benefitting from the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme in southwest Nigeria. Material and methods. A cross-sectional study conducted among randomly selected 40 public primary schools where feeding programme was on-going in Oyo and Ogun States. Pretested semi-structured questionnaire was used to obtain information from the pupils. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure readings were assessed using relevant tools. Results. Some of the pupils (129; 41.6%) aged 10-15 years (p<0.0001) were stunted compared to those aged 5-9years (60; 11.3%). Undernutrition among pupils aged 10-15 years was 47.7%, which was significantly higher than (p<0.0001) among pupils aged 5-9 years, 18.5%. Overall, prevalence of hypertension among the pupils was 6.0%. No significant difference between male and female groups with regards to MUAC (p=0.115), blood pressure (p=0.302) and BMI-for-age (p=0.100). A significant association found between blood pressure and BMI-for-age (p=0.004). Conclusion. Prevalence of blood pressure among the pupils assessed suggests more presence of high blood pressure in the population of primary school pupils. School feeding programme could be an avenue to improve nutritional indices among the pupils.

Opis:
Every year, the consumer demand for the quality of food products grows, and the question of the safety of feed components used to make animal food gains importance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of guar meal, with different protein shares supplied in a diet, on the values of selected biochemical indices of dehydrated blood and liver of pigs. The pigs were divided into four groups. The animals in control group (1) were fed a diet containing soybean protein (SBM) as the main protein source. In the diets for experimental groups 2, 3 and 4, SBM protein was replaced with guar meal protein at 25%, 50% and 75% respectively. The material for the study came from 24 crossbred pigs that were fed the selected diets for 92 days. One week before expected slaughter, blood was drawn for biochemical analyses from the pigs in all groups. The use of a different protein source had no significant influence on changes in the investigated biochemical parameters in the blood of fattening pigs from the different experimental groups. The pigs were slaughtered according to the usual procedure in meat plants. Immediately after slaughter, sections of the liver were taken during carcass cutting. For the prepared specimens, a morphological assessment of the examined liver samples was made. Based on the investigations carried out and the results obtained, it can be concluded that the use of 50% and 75% guar meal protein as a substitute for SBM protein has negative effects on the pig organism. Most of the morphological changes were found in the livers of animals fed diets with a higher content of guar meal protein. The results of the study thus show that an evaluation of the biochemical indices in serum alone does not provide a complete picture of all changes in the organism of pigs under the influence of guar protein; only in combination with the results of the morphological examinations of the internal organs do they provide complete information about the health status of the animals.

Opis:
Hypernatremia is a frequent and potentially life-threatening condition in hospitalized patients. It is a disorder of water metabolism and is usually defined as a plasma sodium concentration above 145 mEq/L. The treatment of severe cases of hypernatremia might be challenging in patient with feeding jejunostomy. The average person’s GI tract secretes and reabsorbs around 7 L of gastrointestinal fluid (including 3-5 L originating above the pylorus alone). These 7 L of gastrointestinal fluid will significantly dilute whatever we consume or infuse. However, this dilution of enteral feed may be bypassed in by feeding jejunostomy. There are very few cases reported on extreme hypernatremia. We present a case of severe hypernatremia in patient with feeding-jejunostomy, managed successfully with the recommended correction.

Opis:
Due to the constant growth of the world's population, the amount of generated wastewater is also constantly increasing. One of the devices that can use wastewater as a raw material for energy production is a microbial fuel cell (MFC). MFCs technology is constantly evolving. However, to increase its use, it is necessary to improve its efficiency. There are various possibilities to ensure this, such as the use of new electrode materials, new cell designs, or the use of wastewaters from different sources. In this paper the analysis of MFC operation (cell voltage, power, and current density) fed by mixed municipal and industrial wastewaters was shown. Moreover, the change in time of COD was analyzed. Due to cost reduction the membrane-less microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) was chosen. It was noted that the addition of concentrated process wastewater increases the COD reduction time in the ML MFC. An increase of generated bioelectricity during fed ML-MFC by mixed municipal and industrial (process wastewater from yeast production) wastewater was demonstrated. The highest values of average cell voltage (598 mV), maximum power (4.47 mW) and maximum current density (0.26 mA•cm-2) were obtained for a 10% share of yeast process wastewater in the mixed wastewater, which fed the ML-MFC.

Opis:
Pigs were popular farm animals in ancient Rome. They were bred to obtain meat, fat and as sacrificial animals. The ancients believed that pigs were relatively low maintenance and, therefore, recommended keeping at least a few on the farm. The diet of pigs was similar to wild boars’. The Romans preferred to put pigs to pasture, but at the same time, they emphasized that animals should have access to wetlands, food of animal origin and highly diverse plant food. The works of agronomists note numerous plant species that should be native to the regions intended for pig grazing. In the autumn-winter period, the diet of pigs was supplemented by feeding acorns, leaves, chaff, etc. A separate diet based on barley or roasted wheat was used in the case of sows and piglets. The activities of the breeders were aimed at increasing the milk production of sows and ensuring the healthy development of piglets. The way pigs were fed in ancient Rome indicates the considerable knowledge of the breeders of that time. The preferred diet not only provided nutrient-rich food, but it also helped to keep the animals in good shape.

The paper focuses on the numerical modeling of the three-dimensional solidification process of steel using the finite element method (FEM). The model includes and discusses the formation of shrinkage cavities and the influence of the solid phase content on the feeding of the casting through the riser. The analysis assumed a critical value of the solid phase content, at which the transport of liquid phase from the riser to the casting is interrupted. The results of numerical simulation are presented to investigate the influence of this factor on the final quality of the casting. The model neglects the fluid motion in the liquid and solid-liquid regions and replaces the influence of the mold with appropriate boundary conditions.

The grinding process in the concentrator is a part of the largest energy consumption, but also the most likely to cause a waste of resources, so the optimization of the grinding process is a very important link. The traditional fuzzy controller relies solely on the expert knowledge summary to construct control rules, which can cause significant steady-state errors in the model. In order to solve the above problem, this paper proposes an elastic variable universe fuzzy control based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The elastic universe fuzzy control model does not need precise fuzzy rules, but only needs to input the general trend of the rules, and the division of the universe is performed by the contraction-expansionfactor. The control performance is directly related to the contraction-expansionfactor, so this article also proposes using particle swarm optimization to optimize the scaling factor to achieve the optimal value. Finally, simulation models of traditional fuzzy control and elastic universe fuzzy control of feeding system of mill were built using Python to verify the control effect. Itssimulation results show that the time of the reaction of the fuzzy control system in the elastic variable theory universe based on particle swarm optimization was shorter by 34.48% comparing to the traditional one. Elastic variable universe fuzzy control based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) effectively improved the control accuracy of the mill feeding system and improved the response speed of the system to a certain extent.

In view of the powder feeding system, a multi-physical coupling model of the gas-powder-piston was established based on the Euler-Euler two-fluid model. The numerical simulation method was applied to explore the effects of dense gas-solid flow characteristics under different operating pressures. The results show that gas-solid pulsations at different operating pressures are mainly concentrated in the upper part of the powder tank. An elevated operating pressure efficiently decreases the powder layer area (εp = 0.1) fluctuation. As the operating pressure increases from 0.5 MPa to 3.0 MPa, the rising time and fluctuation rate of pressure are reduced by 71.4% and 62.3%, respectively, and the pressure in the tank has a long stabilization period. Meanwhile, the variation of the instantaneous powder flow rate is more stable and its average value is closer to the theoretical. A high-pressure environment is more conducive to the stable transportation of powder.

Objectives. To examine the current complementary feeding practices among infants and young children aged 6 to 23 months in India, and factors influencing these practices at child, parental, household and community levels. Material and methods. Data on 74,095 last-born children aged 6 to 23 months used in this study were obtained from the 2015 India Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). Complementary feeding indicators (timely introduction of complementary foods to infants aged 6 to 8 months old, minimum meal frequency, minimum dietary diversity, and minimum acceptable diets) were estimated, and their associated factors were identified using descriptive and multivariate (logistic regression) analyses. Results. The prevalence of the timely introduction of complementary foods to infants aged 6 to 8 months was 45.1%. The proportion of children between ages 6 to 23 months who received the minimum meal frequency, minimum dietary diversity and minimum acceptable diets were 36%, 21% and 9.1%, respectively. Findings from the multivariate analyses revealed that mothers of infants delivered at home, mothers who had no antenatal check-up, mothers who are Hindus, mothers living in rural areas or those from the Western/Northern geographical regions of India were at higher risk of suboptimal complementary feeding practices. Conclusions. Our findings indicate that, among other factors, achieving the recommended four or more antenatal visits was consistently associated with improved complementary feeding practices. Thus, policies that ensure increased coverage and quality of antenatal check-up could improve complementary feeding practices of mothers in India, and help towards achieving sustainable development goal 2, targeted at eradicating hunger and malnutrition.

Opis:
Introduction: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the best way to nourish a newborn is breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is especially important for infants during the first six months of their lives. The type of labor undoubtedly has an important influence on the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding. It is equally important that women follow the principles of efficient nutrition during lactation. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of demographic factors and knowledge of breastfeeding on the duration of the breastfeeding period in the Polish population. Material and methods: We used a diagnostic survey. 520 questionnaires were analyzed. Women completed an online survey via a direct link. Results: 286 women (55%) experienced a spontaneous delivery and 234 women (45%) delivered via caesarean section. The largest group of respondents, 36.7%, demonstrated an average level of knowledge of nutrition during lactation. The knowledge of participants regarding nutrition during lactation depended on their level of education and place of residence, but it did not depend on their age. The duration of the breastfeeding period did not depend on their education, place of residence or age. No significant differences concerning the number of births were detected in the duration of the breastfeeding period. There was also no significant correlation between the duration of the breastfeeding period and the level of women’s knowledge of nutrition during lactation. Conclusions: It seems very important that in the hospital environment there should be a place where women can obtain information about factors affecting the duration of the breastfeeding period.
Wprowadzenie: Według Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia (WHO) karmienie mlekiem matki jest najlepszym sposobem odżywiania niemowląt. Metody i materiały: W badaniu wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego. Analizie poddano 520 ankiet. Kobiety wypełniły ankietę on-line za pomocą bezpośredniego linku. Wyniki: 286 kobiet (55%) urodziło siłami natury, a u 234 kobiet (45%) ciąże rozwiązano cięciem cesarskim.

This article describes current legal regulations on the use of animal proteins in animal feeding, with the special interest on general rules in BSE prevention and control. Now, after more than twenty years, the feed ban on animal proteins was lifted, what has forced the implementation of several control measures in the feed chain. The use of processed animal protein (PAP), of porcine origin in poultry feed and PAP of poultry origin in the swine feed has been authorized already. It requires the application of well-defined conditions during the collection, transport and production of those PAPs. Regular sampling and laboratory analysis should be performed in order to avoid the risk and to the verification of the absence of cross contamination with prohibited ruminant proteins and intra-species recycling.
