Opis:
The article focuses on changes in terrestrial vertebrate fauna of Niebieskie Źródła (Blue Springs) Nature Reserve that occurred between two censuses carried out in the area. The first census was carried out in the period of 1968-1970, and the second census in the period of 1998-1999. In 1998-1999 the occurrence of four species of amphibians, 41 of birds and 15 of mammals was recorded. In comparison with investigations from 1968-1970 two species of amphibians, two species of mammals, and nine species of birds were found to have disappeared from the reserve. In the census carried out in 1998 and 1999 we recorded 22 new species of vertebrates: one new species of amphibian, five species of mammals, and 16 species of birds. The recent observations showed a decline in the abundance of amphibian species in the reserve, especially in the closest vicinity to the urban development around the city of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. The quantitative data on birds showed an increase in the numbers and abundance, which was mainly pronounced in the group of forest species, especially cavity and shrub nesters. We suggest that these changes are directly related to the succession of forest vegetation and its developing vertical structure, as well as to an increase in the forestation of the reserve area.

Opis:
This paper deals with the soil nematode fauna in the Skaryszewski Park (Warsaw, Poland). I compared the density, the composition and structure of domination of the nematode genera, as well as the nematode trophic structure in the two typical for thepark habitats - in soil of lawns and soil of tree plantings. The results indicate that nematode communities in the soil of tree plantings were more numerous (nearly 1.5 million ind. m-2) than in the soil of lawns (600 thousand. m-2). However, the number and the diversity of the nematode genera in the soil of the lawns (26 genera, H '= 2.80) were higher than in the soil of tree plantings (22 genera, H' = 2.27). In total 33 nematode genera were found, and only 15 of them were common for the both habitats. The degree of generic similarity between the habitats was 63%. Some differences in the nematode trophic groups structure were also noticed. Although bacterial-feeding nematodes were the dominant group in both habitats, their percentage in the soil of trees was much higher than in the soil of lawns, respectively 70 and 49%. However in soil of lawns the share of plant feeders was 10 times higher than in the soil of tree plantings. On the basis of the results an attempt to assess the conditions of the soil in the two habitats was done.

Opis:
Larval stages of the Chironomidae (Diptera) can be found in almost any aquatic habitat, including artificial lakes. They form an important fraction of the macrozoobenthos of most freshwater ecosystems. The Mavrovo reservoir as an artificial lake in the Republic of Macedonia, to date, has never been an object of hydrobiological research of this type. For that reason, the purpose of this study was to conduct research on the composition and structure of the chironomid larvae fauna that inhabits the Mavrovo reservoir. The quantitative samples for this research were collected during one year (2017/18), seasonally from five different localities (T1–T5) – T1-Ulazna, T2-Hotel Radika, T3-Middle of the reservoir, T4-Bunec, and T5-Old church (village Mavrovo). According to the results, Chironomidae was represented with five subfamilies, two tribes, and 25 taxa. The subfamilies are Chironominae with the two tribes Chironomini and Tanytarsini, Tanypodinae, Orthocladiinae, Diamesinae, and Prodiamesinae. The dominant taxon is Tanytarsus sp., and besides it, the following taxa: Procladius sp., Chironomus plumosus, Harnischia sp., Polypedilum nubeculosum, and Orthocladius saxicola are characterized by greater community participation. The highest density of chironomid larvae fauna was recorded during the summer, a total of 1013.69 ind/m2, compared to the lowest registered in the spring season which is only 9.78 ind/m2.
Badania prowadzono za pomocą prób ilościowych, pobieranych w ciągu jednego roku (2017/2018), w poszczególnych sezonach wegetacyjnych w następujących lokalizacjach (T1–T5) – T1 –Ulazna, T2 – Hotel Radika, T3 – środek zbiornika, T4 – Bunec i T5 – stary kościół (wieś Mavrovo). Fauna Chironomidae była reprezentowana przez pięć podrodzin, dwa plemiona i 25 taksonów. Podrodziny to Chironominae z dwoma plemionami Chironomini i Tanytarsini, Tanypodinae, Orthocladiinae, Diamesinae i Prodiamesinae.

Opis:
Linguliform brachiopods were important components of early Cambrian benthic communities. However, exceptionally preserved soft parts in Cambrian linguliform brachiopods are extremely sparse, and the most important findings are from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Konservat Lagerstätte of Kunming, southern China. Here we describe the first record of preserved soft−part anatomy in a linguliform brachiopod from the early Cambrian Guanshan fauna (Wulongqing Formation, Palaeolenus Zone); a unit which is considerably younger than the Chengjiang fauna. The well preserved soft anatomy include linguliform pedicles, marginal setae and, in a few cases, an intact lophophore imprint. The pedicle has pronounced surface annulations, with its proximal−most part enclosing the apex of the ventral pseudointerarea; the pedicle is up to 51 mm long, corresponding to more than 4 times the sagittal length of the shell, and 12% of the maximum valve width. In details of their preservation, these new fossils exhibit striking similarities with the linguliforms from the older Chengjiang fauna, and all specimens are preserved in a compressed state as flattened impressions. The new linguliform has an elongate oval to subtriangular shell and an elongate triangular ventral pseudointerarea; the pedicle emerged from an apical foramen through a poorly preserved internal pedicle tube. The new linguliform is most similar to the mostly organic−shelled siphonotretoid−like brachiopod Acanthotretella spinosa, recently described from the classic middle Cambrian Burgess Shale Konservat Lagerstätte, British Columbia, Canada. The new species Acanthotretella decaius sp. nov. is described; it differs from A. spinosa in having a slightly thicker pedicle, and a larger and more rigid, probably partly mineralised shell, indicating that the mostly organic shell of A. spinosa may represent a secondary reduction of shell mineralisation. However, the spine−like setae of the new species are unfortunately poorly preserved only at the margin of the shell, but the new species is referred tentatively to the Superfamily Siphonotretoidea. The occurrence of A. decaius in the Guanshan fauna is the first lower Cambrian (Series 2, early Stage 4) record of both Acanthotretella and siphonotretoids, and it represents the first description of a lophophore and digestive tract from the siphonotretoid lineage.

Opis:
The effects of the beach community structure of macro- and meiofauna on the process of beach wrack decay were investigated by means of a simple field colonisation experiment in a temperate, fine quartz sediment, sandy beach at the end of the Hel Peninsula in Poland. 1260 replicate litterbags of three mesh sizes (12 mm, 0.5 mm, 48 μm) containing fresh wrack were used to assess the role of faunal and non-faunal components in the breakdown of stranded Zostera marina. Wrack breakdown was determined during a three-year field study. This paper presents the first part of the results of this field experiment, which refer to the effects of fragmentation detritivory, leaching and decay rates. Material was lost from the bags at a rapid rate, with only 22–32% of the original dry mass remaining after 27 days in the field. This degradation was not directly related to the faunal succession of the eelgrass tissue, which proceeded in two distinct phases throughout the study period. Exclusion of macrofauna from the wrack by the use of finer-mesh litterbags (< 1 mm) had no appreciable effect on the rate of dry matter loss. Microbial decay, and abiotic leaching and fragmentation are probably the major causes of seagrass weight loss from the litterbags.

Opis:
This paper evaluates the second part of a three-year field study to investigate the effects of the beach macro- and meiofauna community structure on the decay of stranded wrack on Hel Beach (see Jędrzejczak 2002),f ocusing on successional changes and the colonisation of wrack by beach fauna. The investigation enabled the associated faunal assemblages to be characterised. Zostera marina tissue was colonised by the supralittoral fauna in two distinct phases. The macrofauna, including the talitrid amphipod Talitrus saltator,ad ult Diptera and Coleoptera, colonised the wrack within a day, with maximum numbers being recorded after 3 days. Thereafter, their numbers in the samples declined and the meiofauna, consisting of nematodes, oligochaetes, tur bellarians and dipteran larvae, became increasingly abundant. After 18 days, the wrack surface was dominated by meiofauna. This faunal succession was not directly related to the degradation of the seagrass tissue, whic h proceeded linearly throughout the study period. Exclusion of macrofauna from the wrack by the use of < 1 mm mesh litterbags had no appreciable effect on the rate of dry matter loss. Therefore, the major macrofaunal wrack consumers, including T. saltator and Coleoptera,d id not affect the rate of seagrass disintegration. The effect of meiofaunal nematodes, oligochaetes, gast rotrichs and turbellarians on wrack breakdown could not be accurately determined. However, the development of the meiofaunal community suggested that changes in the fauna community were linked more closely to successional changes in the chemistry and/or microflora of the beach wrack than to its physical breakdown.

Beavers activity i.e. dam building, burrows and canals digging and foraging, radically changes the environment at both abiotic and biotic level. The consequences of beavers activity for other organisms are visible mainly through changes in their habitats. Such changes influence the number, species composition and species diversity of numerous flora and fauna species. One group of species that also may be influenced by beavers activity are small mammals (Rodentia and Soricimorpha). In Bieszczadzki and Magurski National Parks (southern Poland), small mammals community has not been studied at beaver sites yet. The aim of this study was to determine species composition, species diversity, and the relative abundance of small mammals at beaver sites, comparing to sections of the stream not inhabited by beavers (control sites). Small mammals were captured in three types of habitats – meadow, forest and riparian woodlots. Transects with live−traps were set there within beaver and control sites. Captures were conducted from one to three times annually, during 2−3 consecutive years. Total trapping effort amounted to 2540 trapdays. It was found that species composition, species diversity, and also the relative abundance of small mammals did not differ significantly between beaver and control sites. Only M. agrestis had significantly higher share in the community at the beaver sites. In mountain conditions, the presence of beaver sites probably does not affect the communities and abundance of small mammals significantly.
