Opis:
In the present study it has been endeavored to estimate the fatigue crack propagation in V-notch Charpy specimens of 2024 T351 Al-alloy. For this purpose, a new application of fatigue crack growth (FCG) is developed based on the “Gamma function.” Experimental fatigue tests are conducted for stress ratios from 0.1 to 0.5 under constant amplitude loading. The empiric model depends principally on physical parameters and materials’ properties in non-dimensional form. Deviation percentage, prediction ratio, and band error are used for validation of the performance of the fatigue life. The results determined from Gamma application are in good agreement with experimental FCG rates and those obtained from using Paris law.

Opis:
Rescue patrol hovercrafts must meet the basic condition - high reliability of use in extreme conditions. The introduction to the work shows damage to the propulsion system and the fan tunnel structure resulting from a fatigue fracture of the attachment wound to the propulsion unit hull. In this paper, the author describes some ways of improving the engine frame structure. In the first phase of the exploitation crack testing of the hovercraft frame, the probable causes of damage were determined. The necessary output data for analysis of the load course were obtained from the operating documentation. The approximate number of variable load cycles acting on the frame truss rod was determined. Using the comparative testing methods, the service life of the frame was estimated. Probable resonance frequencies of the vibrating bars in the truss were determined. Vibration tests of the power transmission assemblies were carried out, which allowed to determine the amplitudes and frequencies of free vibrations. Finally, a modification of the frame shifting the resonant frequency range was proposed. In conclusions, changes to the design and a schedule of inspections were proposed. The newly designed engine frame should have an extended service life.

Opis:
In the paper some problems concerning relations between slide bearings fatigue resistance and the bearing material and structure characteristics of the slide layer have been considered on the basis of bibliographic descriptions. In particular the mechanisms of the nucleation and development of cracks were discussed as dependent not only on the bearing dynamic loading pattern and number of loading cycles but also on the slide layer geometry and its structure design. Two basic types of the possible fatigue cracks were distinguished: structural and "magistral" ones. The process of the fatigue rapture formation and development were analyzed from the viewpoint of fracture mechanics according to the Nemec 's model. In particular types of fatigue cracks, structural cracks (cross-section of the bearing surface layer) and mechanism of fatigue crack development from the viewpoint of fracture mechanics, as well as fracture of magistral type (on the surface of the bearing) almost perpendicular to the circular direction of the bush, fatigue durability for various types of fracture developments, Fractures on the boundary of Si particle in AlSnl2 Si4 alloy and Sn particle in AlSn20 alloy, fractures on the boundary of the intermetallic compound grain CuAl2 in AlSn20 alloy are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Loading conditions and complex geometry have led cylinder heads to become the most challenging parts of diesel engines. One of the most important durability problems in diesel engines is due to cracks in the valves bridge area. The purpose of this study is thermo- -mechanical analysis of cylinder heads of diesel engines using a two-layer viscoplasticity model. The results of the thermo-mechanical analysis indicate that the maximum temperature and stress occurr in the valves bridge. The results of the finite element analysis correspond with the experimental tests carried out by researchers, and illustrate cracks in cylinder heads in this region. The results of the thermo-mechanical analysis show that when the engine is running, the stress in the region is compressive, caused by thermal loading and combustion pressure. When the engine is shut off, the compressive stress turns into tensile stress because of assembly loads. The valves bridge is under cyclic tensile and compressive stress state and thus is subject to low cycle fatigue. After several cycles fatigue cracks will appear in this region. The lifetime of this part can be determined through finite element analysis instead of experimental tests. The viscous strain is greater than the plastic strain which is not negligible.

Opis:
This paper presents technique for qualitative assessment of fatigue crack growth monitoring, utilizing guided elastic waves generated by the sparse PZT piezoelectric transducers network in the pitch – catch configuration. Two Damage Indices (DIs) correlated with the total energy received by a given sensor are used to detect fatigue cracks and monitor their growth. The indices proposed carry marginal signal information content in order to decrease their sensitivity with respect to other undesired non-controllable factors which may distort the received signal. The reason for that is to limit the false calls ratio which besides the damage detection capability of a system, plays a crucial role in applications. However, even such simplified damage indices can alter over a long term, leading to the misclassification problem. Considering a single sensing path, it is very difficult to distinguish whether the resultant change of DIs is caused by a damage or due to decoherence of these DIs. Therefore, assessment approaches based on threshold levels fixed separately for DIs obtained on each of the sensing paths, would eventually lead to a false call. An alternative approach is to compare changes of DIs for all sensing paths. Developing damage distorts the signal only for the sensing paths in its proximity. In order to decrease the misclassification risk, a method of compensating such DIs drift is proposed. The main features and damage detection capabilities of this method will be demonstrated by conducting a laboratory fatigue test of an aircraft panel. The proposed approach has been verified on a real structure during fatigue test of a helicopter tail boom.

The author shows results of research done in the Air Force Institute of Technology concerning design, development and implementation of modern diagnostic systems for aero-engines. The papers gives brief description of a project of a new advanced monitoring system basing on non-contact blade-vibration measurement. Recent monitoring systems for engines offer a great potential to reduce the high maintenance costs of aircraft while increasing reliability and safety. These systems check for abnormal engine responses to detect failures, saving lives and reducing secondary damage to the aircraft. A phenomenon of dynamic change of an aero-engine compressor blades natural frequency in course of fatigue cracks propagation in their roots on the example of a Polish turbojet engine is described. On the ground of this phenomenon main working principles of a device, which measures vibrations of turbine engine rotor blades with application of the noninterfering discrete method (MDPh), used for early detection of first stage compressor blade cracks are discussed. Typical representation of the first stage compressor blades vibration during engine acceleration, representation of the first stage blades vibration during engine acceleration and deceleration with steady-state stator distortions, crack initiation and propagation symptoms in blades, comparison of blade vibration spectra of the same blades for different conditions are presented in the paper.

Opis:
The aim of this research was to determine the 3D crack path and the related growth micromechanism in specimens made of the ferritic-pearlitic steel loaded in modes II and III. Crack closure effects were minimized at the beginning of the experiments by a special technique of generation of precracks in order to measure effective values of fatigue thresholds. Dependences of the crack growth rate on the stress intensity factor range were plotted for the near-threshold region. The effective mode III threshold $\DeltaK_text{IIIeff,th}=4.4 MPam^{1//2}$ was found to be higher than that for mode II ($\DeltaK_\text{IIeff,th}=2.9 MPam^{1//2}$, the theory predicts $3.1 MPam^{1//2}$) which is in agreement with the results for other metallic materials and available theoretical models. Fractographical observations in three dimensions revealed that the remote mode II cracks deflected towards the opening mode I by the mean angle ≈50°, which is significantly different from the low-angle deflections (coplanar growth) previously observed in the ARMCO iron. The simple linear elastic fracture mechanics based criterion for growth of a mode I branch at the crack front loaded in mode II was fulfilled.

Opis:
In this paper several statistical learning algorithms are used to predict the maximal length of fatigue cracks based on a sample composed of 31 observations. The small-data regime is still a problem for many professionals, especially in the areas where failures occur rarely. The analyzed object is a high-pressure Nozzle of a heavy-duty gas turbine. Operating parameters of the engines are used for the regression analysis. The following algorithms are used in this work: multiple linear and polynomial regression, random forest, kernel-based methods, AdaBoost and extreme gradient boosting and artificial neural networks. A substantial part of the paper provides advice on the effective selection of features. The paper explains how to process the dataset in order to reduce uncertainty; thus, simplifying the analysis of the results. The proposed loss and cost functions are custom and promote solutions accurately predicting the longest cracks. The obtained results confirm that some of the algorithms can accurately predict maximal lengths of the fatigue cracks, even if the sample is small.

Opis:
Researched initiation and propagation of short surfaces fatigue cracks out of open in double-sided botch laminated sheet of aviation aluminum alloy 2024-T3 at stable amplitude one-sided bend (R=0.1). Research of the initial stage of development of cracks is realized by use of a SEM microscope, and it allowed to set the place of origin of crack and mikromechanisms of fracture of aluminum sheets, and also type of front of crack. Established a large enough scatter of velocity of propagation in the area of development of short cracks, which for a sheet from this alloy, with a thickness of 3 mm, reaches 0.5 mm. On the basis of fractografy researches modified model of analytical description of propagation of short fatigue crack is proposed.
