Opis:
We investigated the magnetostriction of ceramic YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$ sample both before and after fast neutron irradiation with the fluency of 7.55×10$\text{}^{17}$ n/cm$\text{}^{2}$ and energy of above 0.5 MeV. We have found that after irradiation the widths of both transverse and longitudinal magnetostriction hysteresis loops at a given temperature and at a given external magnetic field increased several times. At 4.2 K and in 10 tesla the widths of the magnetostriction hysteresis loop of the irradiated sample are of an order of 10$\text{}^{-5}$. The results can be understood in the framework of the model of the magnetostriction induced by the pinning forces, assuming the stress in the sample to be induced mainly by the intragrain screening currents.

Opis:
The parameters of neutron emission from the neck of the condensed Z-pinch, were measured at an S-300 installation (2 MA, 100 ns). Profiled loads with central parts made from microporous deuterated polyethylene (with a density of 100 mg/cm3) were used in the experiments. Neutron emission parameters were measured by the time-of-flight (TOF) method. Neutrons were registered using four flight bases with 10 scintillation detectors which were placed at two axial and two radial directions. It was found that the mean neutron energy, determined by the TOF method, turned out to be anisotropic. The average energy of neutrons emitted along the axis towards the cathode, was shifted to higher energy (2.6-2.8 MeV) and the average energy of neutrons emitted towards the anode, was shifted to lower energy (2.1-2.3 MeV) compared to the d-d reaction neutron energy 2.45 MeV. The average energy of neutrons, emitted in two opposite radial directions, was close to 2.45 MeV. The half-width of the energy distributions reconstructed for all directions was 400-500 keV. The analysis of the experimental results demonstrated that the found phenomena could be explained by a slowly decaying high energy tail in the energy distribution of colliding deuterons. The maximal neutron yield was of 6 x 109.

A PF-1000 facility was operated for the first time at an energy level of up to 1 MJ. The maximal emission of 2×1011 neutrons/shot was registered. Relatively low emission anisotropy was observed. Fast ion beams were generated only from shots performed at a low filling pressure (1-2 Torr).

Opis:
The application of a Fast Neutron Activation Analysis (FNAA) technique on samples of pure gold, irradiated by a plasma focus of 7 kJ, has been investigated. The reaction was the inelastic scattering of neutrons, 197Au(n,n'gamma)197Aum. To avoid problems connected with peculiar features of the neutron emission from this kind of source, a preliminary standardisation of the method has been carried out. The results obtained have a practical interest in view of possible applications to the technology of extraction of minerals.

Opis:
This paper presents a set of diagnostics dedicated to PF-24 – new medium size – plasma focus (PF) device built and operated at the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN). The PF-24 can operate at energy level up to 93 kJ and charging voltage up to 40 kV. Each condenser is connected with a specially designed spark gap with a very small jitter, which ensures a high efficiency and a low current rise time. The working parameters of PF-24 generator make it a suitable tool for testing new detection systems to be used in fusion research. Four types of such detection systems are presented in this article: three diagnostic systems used to measure electric quantities (Rogowski coil, magnetic probe, capacitance probe), neutron counter based on beryllium activation, fast neutron pinhole camera based on small-area BCF-12 plastic scintillation detectors and high-speed four-frame soft X-ray camera with microchannel plate.

Opis:
The behaviour of Pb activation peaks, which appear in an X-ray spectrum of Fast Neutron Activation Analysis (FNAA) performed by means of a Plasma Focus (PF) neutron source and an NaI scintillator counter, has been studied. The PF device generates neutron bursts of different intensities. To know the exact neutron flux illuminating a sample during PF discharges an external neutron counter is usually used. The nature and behaviour of the indicated peaks suggest that one could use one of them as an internal standard for neutron production measurement instead of an external counter. This technique allows more reliable and accurate determinations of the presence of various elements.

Opis:
Depending on the neutron energy used, neutron radiography can be generally categorized as fast and thermal neutron radiography. Fast neutron radiography (FNR) with neutron energy more than 1 MeV opens up a new range of possibilities for a non-destructive examination when the inspected object is thick or dense. Other traditional techniques, such as X-ray, gamma ray and thermal neutron radiography, do not meet penetration capabilities of FNR in this area. Because of these distinctive features, this technique is used in different industrial applications such as security (cargo investigation for contraband such as narcotics, explosives and illicit drugs), gas/liquid fl ow and mixing and radiography and tomography of encapsulated heavy shielded low Z compound materials. The FNR images are produced directly during exposure as neutrons create recoil protons, which activate a scintillator screen, allowing images to be collected with a computer-controlled charge-coupled device camera. Finally, the picture can be saved on a computer for image processing. The aim of this research was to set up a portable FN R system and to test it for use in non-destructive testing of different composite materials. Experiments were carried out by using a fast portative neutron generator Thermo Scientific MP 320.
