In my article I present various readings and interpretations of two of Conrad’s protagonists – Lord Jim and Razumov – in order to show that their conduct cannot be properly understood if the reader does not take into account the moral and cultural codes by which Conrad’s characters are bound. Paraphrasing Conrad’s title Under Western Eyes, I discuss the interpretations of Western scholars who have lost or found the real message of Conrad’s works.

Opis:
This article talks about a famous novel by Leopold Tyrmand entitled Zły (The Bad) which was translated into English by David Welsh as The Man with White Eyes (New York: Knopf, 1959). The author claims that the novel which describes a life in destroyed Warsaw of the 1950s gradually became an epic. The author refers to a conception by Polish literary scholar and critic Kazimierz Wyka who claimed that epics are not written, but – under some circumstances, sometimes even against the will of the writers – some texts become epics. According to the author, in Zły (both in the style and in the plot) can be found the elements of brilliant epic stylization. The novel which at first was read as a thriller gradually became an epic because it described with epic accuracy a world that had disappeared, a world where a new life was born in the ruins.

Opis:
In the psychological and psychiatric professional literature more and more proofs are being accumulated that psychological stress alone, once it exceeds certain limits of intensity and duration, can lead to severe impairment of fundamental psychological processes and cause often irreversible, and even progressive mental changes. In numerous studies of victims of the Second World War these changes, as well as accompanying psychosomatic disorders, were given the name of Concentration Camp Syndromes. The present study discusses the symptoms, the progression, the reasons for differences in intensity of manifestation, as well as the prognoses for the victims of psychological disturbances of this kind. Although almost all persons who survived prisons, concentration camps, forced labor camps, and prisoner of war camps seem to be, to a greater or lesser degree, touched by the symptoms of this syndrome even thirty years or more after the war, it seems that those who became repatriated to their own countries function comparatively less successfully than those who emigrated, particularly when occupational and financial achievements are compared. It is possible that the fact of emigration in itself forces the individual to increased efforts to provide for himself and his family, since he knows that he cannot count on anyone else. Nevertheless, despite outward appearances of material success, the survivors who emigrated often experience serious psychological disorders, which in some cases are serious enough to be transmitted to their children. With this accumulated evidence of long term effects of war trauma, questions arise about the psychological and physical health of Polish wartime emigrants, who were almost entirely drawn from survivors of terror and oppression. Because we know very little about this group, studies seem to be indicated to identify problems and eventually give assistance to those who may need it, particularly in the second generation. A work of this nature could also increase the understanding of scientists interested in Polish wartime emigrants, as well as help those researchers, on the international arena, who try to chart long term effects of wartime stresses.

In autumn 1980 Swiat Młodych, a newspaper addressed to teenagers, announced a competition called “MyWorld 80–81.” By early 1981 hundreds of letters had come in. This unique source of information allows us to get a glimpse of teenagers’ perception of the birth of the “Solidarity” movement. Thanks to these letters, we can take a closer look at school discussions, conversations at the family table or disputes during school intervals. Everyday life is also reflected in these letters: queues, crowded public transport, fatigue and uncertainty. The vast majority of the letter writers sympathised with “Solidarity” although the prospect of confrontation between the regime and the inchoate movement was a source of anxiety. The authorities were largely perceived as a degenerate oligarchy. The quoted letters are also a testimony of discovery of the past and withheld historical facts and also of the search for new authorities (e.g., Czesław Miłosz). The young generation’s declarations suggest that it wanted to participate in public life with previously unparalleled gusto. Martial law nipped this positive energy in the bud.

Opis:
In the article, I focus on the children’s perception of the everyday life in a therapeutic common room, where they spend time after school. In my research, I gave voice to small charges so that they could tell what this place is for them. I present the statements of children who spend a few hours in a common room every day. I place my research in the qualitative trend, in the research I use the analysis of personal documents created intentionally, these are written statements of children, which contain their assessment, thoughts, reflections and feelings they experience in relation to staying in a common room. Rarely from a child’s point of view, phenomena, places and processes are described. The aim of my research is to get to know, understand and describe the world of the common room seen through the eyes of children, participants of the offered support. In research I am looking for the answer to the question: How do children perceive everyday life in a therapeutic common room? I make the description according to the categories selected from children’s statements. From the analysis of children’s written statements regarding the perception of a common room by children, in which they spend daily time after school, the following conclusions arise. Children like to stay in a common room, they feel safe, have a good time and have fun, in their opinion a lot is happening in a common room, the common room is a very “cool” place. In a common room, children have many colleagues. They like a commonroom staff. They like to participate in activities organized in a common room, they have their favourite games. Children also like to spend time outdoors, on the playground, on Orlik, on walks and on trips. Children like a common room equipment, in particular toys and rooms, they especially like to stay in the kitchen.

New objective methods to measure the optical aberrations of the eye are reviewed, in particular the probably more representative ones: Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor and laser ray tracing. They are shown to be robust and provide highly reliable data, which are permitting to obtain many new results about the optics of the eye in basic and clinical studies. In addition, different experiments have demonstrated the correction of eye's aberration. Again two representative approaches are reviewed. The first results were obtained with the close-loop adaptive optics system developed at the University of Rochester. Later on, phase plates made by photosculpture in photoresist (placed in front of the eye like conventional lenses) have also permitted the correction of ocular aberrations. This is a new, but already very active field of research, which has open many new questions and a wide variety of applications.

The article provides a brief historical background of Polish-Lithuanian stereotypes and provides the results of sociological research, which was carried out at the Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Lithuania. The main tasks of the article are to examine Polish and Lithuanian characters, their mutual relations and relations to other people, their attitudes to material goods and to their homeland. The author tried to define "How Lithuanians refer to themselves and to Poles". The results of the research are divided into two parts. The first describes Lithuanian autostereotypes and stereotypes about Lithuanians. The second part provides data about actual Lithuanian stereotypes about Poles. As a result of the research, we confirmed most of the "classical stereotypes" about the two nations, but also found the new ones.

Opis:
This study analyses the use of perspective in the autobiographical trilogy (In-House Weddings, Vita Nuova and Gaps) and the late “journalistic” texts by the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. The article examines Hrabal’s play with perspective on several levels: on the narrative level, Hrabal experiments with the narrative voice and focalization, and views himself through the eyes of his wife Elisˇka, who is also the narrator of the whole trilogy; this strategy allows him to gain distance from the “I-perspective” and to touch upon sensitive moments of his life (particularly auto-censorship, his relationship with the Communist authorities, and various fears). Furthermore, Elisˇka’s view clashes with the view of Hrabal as a character in the narrative world, which results in an original autobiographical polyphony; the article presents a detailed scrutiny of these perspectives with regard to time. Drawing from hermeneutics as a way of self-understanding shaped by texts and culture, the analysis of perspectivity will demonstrate that Hrabal also views himself through the eyes of books and cultural images; additionally, the article points to parallels with Hrabal’s other works, particularly Too Loud a Solitude. Finally, Hrabal’s playful use of perspective concerns the question of identity: the textual self that appears in the stream of images manifests itself in constant motion, thus unveiling the non-substantiality and openness of human identity. In this way, Hrabal’s writing about himself approximates the view of self in Eastern philosophies (esp. Buddhism and Taoism − Hrabal’s sources of inspiration) as well as contemporary cognitive approaches to the theory of autobiography (Paul John Eakin).

Opis:
The purpose of the article is to analyse selected aspects of innovation in the Polish tourism sector from the perspective of consumers and to highlight those areas where innovative solutions should be implemented. The author uses empirical data to verify the following hypothesis: consumers’ perception of innovations concerning tourism products in the Polish market varies considerably and depends on respondents’ characteristics. The study was based on information collected from 407 respondents using the computer-assisted web interview method (CAWI), which constituted a country-wide quota sample, representative of the Polish population aged 18 or over, in terms of age, sex, education, the size of the place of residence. The results of the study indicate that consumers are mostly in favour of innovation in the tourism sector, notice emerging developments in this field and are very optimistic about the country’s innovation capacity. Differences in opinions about innovative tourist products were depended on the professional status of the respondents. Consumer awareness may be one of the key elements in the development of the sector. The development of innovative tourism services in Poland should be a continuous process, especially in less developed areas, which depend heavily on tourism. The development in this area is facilitated by favourable attitudes of consumers towards innovation in the tourism sector, especially in niche markets, and specialised local resources could help to intensify innovation activities.
