    The zircon populations from the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous– Palaeocene) and Menilite (Oligocene–lower Miocene) formations in the northern part of the Skole Nappe in Poland were examined to evaluate interpretations of the external morphology of detrital zircon in provenance research. The advantage of the zircon typology method, supplemented with elongation measurements, is that it may be applied successfully to comparisons of euhedral zircon populations from sedimentary deposits of different ages and unknown provenance. The zircon typology method, along with elongation measurements of zircons, contributes valuable data that supplement conventional heavy-mineral analyses. It also permits the recognition of potential source areas and rock types for further comparative research.

    The majority of studies on leeches are related to: internal and external morphology. Fewer molecular research projects focus on molecular studies and karyology. The latter are needed to explain the evolutionary and systematic issues. Karyotypes for 22 species of Hirudinida have hitherto been determined, including: 8 species belonging to the Glossiphoniidae family, 3 species of Piscicolidae, 7 of Erpobdellidae, 1 of Haemopidae and 3 of Hirudinidae. The chromosome number vary among individual groups of leeches. Within Glossiphoniidae the chromosome diploid number ranges from 14 to 32, in Piscicolidae from 20 to 32, in Erpobdelliformes from 16 to 22, and in Hirudiniformes from 24 to 28. The karyological analyses were used to show phylogenetic relations between main groups of Hirudinida, and the diploid number of 16 was suggested to be a primitive value. This number tends to increase as the evolution progresses. The phylogeny scheme of leeches proposed by Mann shows the Glossiphoniidae as primitive to the Piscicolidae, and Hirudinidae as giving rise to the Haemopidae and Erpobdellidae. Those hypotheses are herewith confronted with morphological, molecular, karyological, ecological and behavioral data.

    The carnivoran mammal Bavarictis gaimersheimensis is the type and only species of the genus, known from a single locality (Gaimersheim 1-2, MP 27-28, 24.5-26 Myr) in southern Germany. An endocranial cast of the holotype of this species indicates a low degree of posterior and ventral neopallial expansion (little overlap of the cerebellum and the piriform lobes by the neopallium, the middle portion of the rhinal fissure only slightly and smoothly elevated), and a distinctive pattern of neopallial convulations, characterized by the presence of a Y-shaped fissure mediodorsally (consisting of the ansate sulcus anteromedially, the coronal sulcus anterolaterally, and the lateral sulcus posteriorly) and an arched suprasylvian sulcus lateroventrally. The status of the cruciate sulcus is uncertain because the corresponding part of the braincase is not preserved. The species is presently best placed incertae sedis among basal musteloids.
    Wczesny musteloid Bavarictis gaimersheimensis Mödden, 1991 jest typowym i jedynym znanym gatunkiem rodzaju Bavarictis Mödden, 1991. Całość materiału reprezentującego ten gatunek pochodzi z pojedynczego stanowiska (Gaimersheim 1-2) w południowych Niemczech, datowanego na późny oligocen (MP 27-28, 24, 5-26 mln lat temu). Odlew wnętrza mózgoczaszki holotypu Bavarictis gaimersheirnensis (Fig. 1) wskazuje na niewielki zasięg kory nowej (neocortex) w okolicy ciemieniowo-potylicznej i skroniowej mózgu (znaczne odsłonięcie móżdżku - cerebellum i płatów gruszkowatych - lobi piriformes, nieznaczne i łagodnie przebiegające wzniesienie środkowej części szczeliny węchowej -fissura rhinalis), a także na obecność czterech bruzd w obrębie kory nowej: bruzdy pętlowatej (sulcus ansatus), koronowej (sulcus coronalis) i bocznej (sulcus lateralis), połączonych w kształcie litery Y, oraz łukowatej bruzdy suprasylwialnej (sulcus suprasylvius). Stan zachowania mózgoczaszki nie umożliwia stwierdzenia obecności czy braku bruzdy krzyżowej (sulcus cruciatus). Założenie obecności tej bruzdy w rekonstrukcji mózgu Bavarictis gaimersheimensis (Fig. 1) oparte jest na jej występowaniu u większości wczesnych przedstawicieli Musteloidea (Fig. 2). Z porównania z rekonstrukcjami mózgów innych wszesnych musteloidów (Fig. 2) wynika, że Bavarictis gaimersheimensis, Potamotherium valletoni i Promartes sp. łączy apomorficzna obecność bruzdy pętlowatej, oraz że Bavarictis gaimersheimensis i Plesictis branssatensis są najprymitywniejszymi znanymi musteloidami pod względem zasięgu kory nowej w części skroniowej (najbardziej odsłonięte płaty gruszkowate, najsłabiej zaznaczone wzniesienie w środkowej części szczeliny węchowej). Podczas gdy różnice w zasięgach kory nowej sugerują, że Mustelictis piveteaui, Paragale huerzeleri, Plesiogale angustifrons, Potamotherium valletoni i Promartes sp. miały wspólnego przodka, którego nie dzieliły z Bavarictis gaimersheimensis i Plesictis branssatensis, to występowanie bruzdy pętlowatej przemawia za bliskim pokrewieństwem między Bavarictis gaimersheimensis, Potamotherium valletoni i Promartes sp. Pierwsza z hipotez zakłada niezależny rozwój bruzdy pętlowatej u Bavarictis gaimersheimensis oraz w obrębie hipotetycznego kladu zawierającego Potamotherium valletoni i Promartes sp., natomiast druga hipoteza wymaga niezależnego powiększenia kory nowej w tym kladzie oraz w innym hipotetycznym kladzie, zawierającym Mustelictis piveteaui, Paragale huerzeleri i Plesiogale angustifrons. Wobec tej sprzeczności i braku lub słabości poparcia dla wcześniejszych hipotez o powiązaniach filogenetycznych Bavarictis gaimersheimensis (dyskutowanych w pracy), a także przy plezjomorficzności większości cech czaszki, uzębienia i mózgu tego gatunku, brak uzasadnienia dla jego innej pozycji niż incertae sedis w obrębie bazalnych Musteloidea.
    Bavarictis gaimersheimensis Mödden, 1991 ist eine monotypische Gattung innerhalb der musteloiden Carnivora. Das bekannte Material dieser Art stammt ausschliesslich aus der süd-deutschen Spaltenfüllung Gaimersheim 1-2 (MP 27-28, 24.5-26 Myr). Ein Ausguss des Endocraniums des Holotyps der Art (Fig. 1) zeigt für das Neopallium, neben einem geringen Grad an Ausdehnung nach posterior und ventral, auch ein Furchungsmuer, das durch den bogenförmigen Sulcus suprasylvius und den Y-förmigen Verlauf von Sulcus lateralis, ansatus und coronalis charakterisiert wird. Konkrete Aussagen zum Sulcus cruciatus sind nicht möglich, weil der entsprechende Teil des Schädels nicht überliefert ist. Sein Vorhandensein wird jedoch in der Rekonstruktion des Gehirns von Bavarictis gaimersheimensis angenommen (Fig. 1), weil er bei den meisten frühen Vertretern der Musteloidea auftritt (Fig. 2). Ein Vergleich mit den Rekonstruktionen der Gehirne anderer frühen Vertreter der Musteloidea (Fig. 2) zeigt, dass Bavarictis gaimersheimensis, Potamotherium valletoni und Promartes sp. durch den Besitz des Sulcus ansatus als evoluiert anzusehen sind, wohingegen Bavarictis gaimersheimensis und Plesictis branssatensis bezüglich der Ausdehnung des Neopalliums als am primitivsten anzusehen sind. Die Differenzen in der Ausdehnung des ventralen Neopalliums legen den Verdacht nahe, dass Mustelictis piveteaui, Paragale huerzeleri, Plesiogale angustifrons, Potamotherium valletoni und Promartes sp. einen gemeinsamen Vorfahren gehabt haben, den sie nicht mit Bavarictis gaimersheimensis und Plesictis branssatensis geteilt haben. Auf der anderen Seite wird durch die Verteilung des Auftretens eines Sulcus ansatus unter den frühen Musteloiden die Hypothese gestützt, dass Bavarictis gaimersheimensis, Potamotherium valletoni und Promartes sp. innerhalb dieser Gruppe als nächstverwandt anzusehen sind. Die erste Alternative impliziert eine voneinander unabhängige Entstehung des Sulcus ansatus bei Bavarictis gaimersheimensis und innerhalb einer hypothetischen Entwicklungslinie, die Potamotherium valletoni und Promartes sp. umfasst. Die zweite Alternative setzt eine voneinander unabhängige Entstehung der Ausdehnung des ventralen Neopalliums bei der letztgenannten Entwicklungslinie und bei einer hypothetischen Entwicklungslinie voraus, die Mustelictis piveteaui, Paragale huerzeleri und Plesiogale angustifrons umfasst. Angesichts des Konfliktes bei der Bewertung dieser Merkmale für die phylogenetischen Beziehungen von Bavarictis gaimersheimensis und angesichts des plesiomorphen Charakters der meisten Merkmale an Schädel, Bezahnung und Gehirn bei dieser Art, sollte Bavarictis gaimersheimensis weiterhin als incertae sedis innerhalb der basalen Musteloidea betrachtet werden.

    The elemental composition and morphology of aerobic granules in sequencing batch reactors (GSBRs) treating high-nitrogen digester supernatant was investigated. The investigation particularly focused on the effect of the number of anoxic phases (one vs. two) in the cycle and the dose of external organics loading (450 mg COD/(L·cycle) vs. 540 mg COD/(L·cycle)) on granule characteristics. Granules in all reactors were formed of many single cells of rod and spherical bacteria. Addition of the second anoxic phase in the GSBR cycle resulted in enhanced settling properties of the granules of about 10.6% and at the same time decreased granule diameter of about 19.4%. The study showed that external organics loading was the deciding factor in the elemental composition of biomass. At 540 mg COD/(L·cycle) the granules contained more weight% of C, S and N, suggesting more volatile material in the granule structure. At lower organics loadings granules had the higher diameter of granules which limited the diffusion of oxygen and favored precipitation of mineral compounds in the granule interior. In this biomass higher content of Mg, P and Ca, was observed.
    W pracy określono skład pierwiastkowy oraz morfologię granul tlenowych w reaktorach porcjowych (GSBRs) oczyszczających wody nadosadowe o wysokim stężeniu azotu amonowego i niskim stosunku ChZT/N. Zbadano wpływ liczby faz anoksycznych (jedna lub dwie) w cyklu pracy GSBR i dawki zewnętrznego źródła węgla (450 mg ChZT/(l•cykl) oraz 540 mg ChZT/(l•cykl)) na właściwości granul tlenowych. Granule we wszystkich reaktorach składały się z wielu pojedynczych komórek pałeczek i ziarniaków. Włączenie drugiej fazy anoksycznej w cyklu GSBR, przy danej dawce zewnętrznego źródła węgla, poprawiło właściwości sedymentacyjne osadu granulowanego o około 10,6% przy jednoczesnym obniżeniu średnic granul o około 19,4%. Badania wykazały, że dawka zewnętrznego źródła węgla była decydującym czynnikiem wpływającym na skład pierwiastkowy biomasy. Przy dawce 540 mg ChZT/(lcykl) granule zawierały więcej% wagowych C, S i N, co wskazywało na obecność wyższej ilości związków organicznych w strukturze osadu granulowanego. Przy niższej dawce zewnętrznego źródła węgla granule miały większe średnice, co skutkowało ograniczeniem dyfuzji tlenu i sprzyjało wytrącaniu związków mineralnych w ich wnętrzu. W tej biomasie obserwowano wyższą zawartość Mg, Ca i P.

    The paper presents results of structural tests carried out for scale formed during high-temperature sulphurisation of Crofer 22APU steel within temperature range 600-900°C, in atmosphere containing H2/H2S, at partial pressure of sulphur vapours: pS210-7 up to 10-1 Pa. Non-preoxidated and preoxidated (preliminarily oxidated in air atmosphere) samples were put through sulphurisation process. The SEM, EDX and XRD methods were employed to examine scale surface morphology, including its chemical constitution and phase composition. The SEM tests allowed to find that scale structure depends on atmosphere content and temperature. In conditions of high sulphur vapour pressure values (exceeding iron sulphide dissociation pressure), scale has two layers and consists of a mixture of iron sulphides (FenSm) and chromium sulphides (CrxSy). Outer scale layer is built of large, column-shaped grains with composition corresponding to (FenSm), whereas its inner layer - fine-grained and porous - is a mixture of chromium sulphides, iron sulphides and sulphospinels. Occurrence of internal oxidation zone has been observed at the temperatures of 800°C and 900°C. Scale has single layer at low sulphur vapour pressure values, that is under FeS dissociation pressure. Preoxidated steel samples undergo sulphurisation process also after incubation period. This period is changeable and depends on sulphur vapour temperature and pressure. The structure and chemical constitution of scale formed on pre-oxidated samples depends on sulphurisation process parameters. Morphology of outer scale surface on preoxidated samples is complicated, because sulphides of all steel constituents are forming on the surface of oxides.
    W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań strukturalnych zgorzelin otrzymanych w trakcie wysokotemperaturowego siarkowania stali Crofer 22APU w zakresie temperatur 600-900°C w atmosferze H2/H2S przy ciśnieniu parcjalnym par siarki pS210-7 do 10-1 Pa. Procesowi siarkowania poddano próbki nie preoksydowane oraz próbki preoksydowane (wstępnie utlenione w atmosferze powietrza). Badania morfologii powierzchni zgorzelin wraz z ich składem chemicznym i fazowym wykonano przy zastosowaniu SEM, EDX i XRD. Na podstawie badań SEM stwierdzono, że budowa zgorzelin zależy od składu atmosfery oraz temperatury. W warunkach wysokich prężności par siarki (powyżej prężności rozkładowej siarczku żelaza) zgorzeliny są dwuwarstwowe i są zbudowane z mieszaniny siarczków żelaza (FenSm) i siarczków chromu (CrxSy). Zewnętrzna warstw zgorzeliny jest zbudowana z dużych kolumnowych ziaren o składzie odpowiadającej (FenSm), natomiast wewnętrzna drobno ziarnista, porowata jest mieszaniną siarczków chromu, żelaza oraz sulfospineli. W temperaturze 800°C i 900°C stwierdzono występowanie strefy wewnętrznego utleniania. W niskich ciśnieniach par siarki tzn. poniżej prężności rozkładowej FeS, zgorzeliny są jednowarstwowe. próbki stali preoksydowane ulegają również procesowi siarkowania po okresie inkubacji. Okres ten jest zmienny i zależy od temperatury i prężności par siarki. Budowa i skład chemiczny zgorzelin otrzymanych na preoksydowanych próbkach zależy od parametrów siarkowania. Morfologia zewnętrznej powierzchni zgorzeliny utworzonej na próbkach preoxydowanych jest skomplikowana, gdyż na powierzchni tlenków tworzą się siarczki składników stali.
