Opis:
Celem artykułu jest analiza metodologicznych i etycznych uwarunkowań prowadzenia badań w trudnym terenie. Zaakcentowany został problem rozumienia badanych przez badacza, zwłaszcza w przypadku prowadzenia badań w odmiennym kulturowo kraju, gdzie nie do końca może on liczyć na sięganie do własnych zasobów mentalnych, w tym dotychczasowych doświadczeń. W artykule został podjęty także wątek budowania relacji z badanymi oraz problem etyki, który często stoi w sprzeczności wobec efektywności pozyskiwania danych.
The aim of the paper is discussion over methodological and ethical conditions of research carried out in hostile environment. The problem of high importance is understanding people in culturally different country where researcher faces huge problems in using his/her mental capacities including past experiences. There is also discussed problem of relations created with interviewees and ethics that in many situations is contradictory toward effectiveness in data collection.

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje problemy, z jakimi boryka się cywil, który prowadzi badania społeczne w wojsku. Oparty on będzie o moje własne doświadczenia, które zdobyłam, prowadząc badania empiryczne do mojej pracy doktorskiej pt.: „Człowiek w instytucji totalnej. Społeczne aspekty służby żołnierzy polskich poza granicami kraju – na przykładzie Iraku”, napisanej pod kierunkiem Profesora Ryszarda Borowicza. Trudności i problemy, z jakimi przyszło mi się wówczas borykać, były różnej natury: instytucjonalne, metodologiczne, techniczne, etyczne, a także emocjonalne i pojawiały się na każdym etapie badań. Złożoność zjawisk zachodzących w armii jako instytucji totalnej, a także chęć pokazania podmiotowości żołnierzy (pensjonariuszy tejże instytucji) zadecydowały o wykorzystaniu przez mnie jakościowych metod badawczych. Ich wybór nie oznaczał, iż jako badacz mogłam uniknąć trudnych decyzji. Moje doświadczenie pokazuje, że najciekawsze zjawiska społeczne w armii są zazwyczaj trudno dostępne dla socjologa akademickiego, który musi nauczyć się odkrywania „światów zastrzeżonych” dla badacza cywila.
This article presents the problems encountered by the researcher social-civilian who studies military. It is based on my own experience that I have gained conducting research for my dissertation: “Human in a total institution. Social aspects of Polish soldiers’ tours of duty abroad on the example in Iraq”, written under the direction of Professor Ryszard Borowicz. Difficulties and problems that then had been having were of different nature: institutional, methodological, technical, ethical, and emotional and appeared at every stage of research. The complexity of the phenomena occurring in the army as a total institution, as well as the desire to show the subjectivity of soldiers (residents of that institution) they decided that I’m using qualitative research methods. Choosing these methods does not mean that a researcher can avoid difficult decisions. My experience shows that the most interesting social phenomena in army are difficult to access for a sociologist, who must learn to explore “inaccessible worlds” for civil researcher.

Qualitative researchers are expected to engage in reflexivity, whereby they consider the impact of their own social locations and biases on the research process. Part of this practice involves the consideration of boundaries between the researcher and the participant, including the extent to which the researcher may be considered an insider or an outsider with respect to the area of study. This article explores the three different processes by which boundaries are made and deconstructed, and the ethical complexities of this boundary making/(un)making process. This paper examines the strengths and limitations of three specific scenarios: 1) when the researcher is fully cloaked and hiding their positionalities; 2) when there is strategic undressing to reveal some positionalities; 3) when there is no cloak, and all positionalities are shared or revealed. This paper argues that it is insufficient to be reflexive about boundaries through acknowledgement, and instead advocates reflexivity that directly examines the processes by which social locations are shared and hidden during the research process.

The paper summarizes the author’s experience of conducting economic scientific research. Economic scientific research is understood as both an analysis of economic phenomena and research purchased on the market of research services. The former are not subject to ethical dilemmas. It is a professional approach backed by sound economic theory that is important. The latter, regardless of who purchases research services, pose a risk of ethical dilemmas and conflicts of interest. The area of potential risk is connected to expectations of organizations purchasing research services. In most cases organizations are interested to receive objective assessments or recommendation necessary to take decisions. Ethical conflict appears when the destination of research is lobbing or a company’s image creation. The results of research may be used as an instrument of competition. It is thus vital that a research organization should judge the ethical dimension of undertaken research tasks. Research projects being socially beneficial should be definitely undertaken. In controversial cases, the conviction of the rightfulness in the ethical dimension ought to be decisive. In all cases the principal rule should be aiming at achieving scientifically objective assessments and opinions.

The main goal of this article is to present the contemporary designer’s profession in the scope of its personal definition of ethic and social responsibility. In order to deal with, it will be showed some empirical data from own sociological research conducted among Polish professional designers. The opinions have described their attitude to the problem and made possible endeavoured to place collected opinions in broader, relational context of this profession. To bring more clearity to the matter, there will be also presented the definition of design, differentiation of roles undertaken by contemporary designers and their influence on shaping the material environment of human life.

Lately, the subject of responsibility has gained importance in the context of the economic crisis. In economy, it took the form of social responsibility. It concerns activities additionally undertaken by organizations in order to establish correct relations with their employees and society, as well as with regard to the natural environment. Therefore, a very important role is played by the ethos of the undertaken socially responsible actions. To a large extent, it is reflected in the ethical dimension. Thus, in enterprises, codes of ethics have become a base of axiology in the building of the organizational cultures. Unfortunately, Polish companies-as shown in the paper-still attach a lesser role to the ethical dimension of business.

The new paradigm in social research on children, accepting the child as an important social actor, has its methodological and ethical specifics. In doing research on children, child-friendly research techniques are used with an emphasis on children’s rights. The attempt of the researcher to apply a new method in studying children may come into conflict with the authoritarian approach to children in the school environment, where such research most often takes place. We shall examine both the conflicts between school situations and the expectations of the new approach to children in the following material using the experience of our own research on children.

Skodyfikowana etyka zawodu socjologa jest próbą określenia norm moralnych działalności zawodowej, które wynikają z etyki ogólnej i są jej uszczegółowieniem. Odnosząc się do konkretnych, wzorcowych sytuacji, daje podstawy do określenia reguł funkcjonowania socjologa w sytuacji wynikającej z jego roli zawodowej. Pokazuje, jak socjolog ma się zachowywać, a jak nie powinien postępować. Ustalenie norm etyki zawodowej socjologa nie tylko jest podyktowane troską o dobro przedstawicieli tego zawodu, ale i ma na celu dobro społeczeństwa, które przez socjologów jest badane, a także korzysta z wyników ich badań. Społeczeństwo oczekuje od socjologów, by posiadali wysokie kwalifikacje zawodowe, stale doskonalili własne umiejętności i podnosili poziom fachowej wiedzy, a także zachowywali wysokie standardy etyczne. Jedynie solidne badania realizowane przez uczciwych socjologów będą zasługiwały na uznanie, a jeśli ich opinie będą bezstronne, zostaną przez społeczeństwo przyjęte i pozytywnie ocenione.
The code of professional ethics for sociologists attempts to define moral standards of sociologists’ professional activity, derived from general ethics being particularized. Professional ethics in sociology, through reference to specific model situations, gives the grounds for establishing rules of sociologists professional functioning. It indicates how a sociologist should and should not act. Observing moral standards is an expression of care not only for sociologists’ common good, but also for the society’s common good, as the society is examined by sociologists, and uses and benefits from the research results. The society expects that sociologists will be highly qualified, will perfect their skills and improve their expertise as well as keep high ethical standards. Only solid research conducted by reliable sociologists deserves to be acknowledged, and if sociologists' opinions are unbiased, they will be accepted and positively appraised.

Konsekwencją rozwoju kultury audytu w szkolnictwie wyższym i nauce w Polsce jest postępująca instytucjonalizacja etyki badań, obejmująca także badania społeczne. Jednocześnie niewiele wiadomo o stosunku rodzimych badaczy społecznych do komisji etycznych. Artykuł opiera się na wywiadach pogłębionych z socjologami i antropologami społeczno-kulturowymi, którzy prowadzili badania jakościowe między innymi z udziałem osób podatnych na zranienie. Tekst omawia poglądy badaczy na temat tego, jak powinny i jak nie powinny działać komisje etyczne w Polsce. Analiza koncentruje się wokół kilku kwestii: roli takich gremiów, zakresu ich władzy, sposobu oceny oraz składu. Efektem rozważań jest propozycja modelu komisji etycznych dla badań społecznych, która stanowi próbę pogodzenia różnych opinii badaczy na ten temat.
The consequence of the development of audit culture in higher education in Poland is the progressive institutionalization of research ethics, including social research. At the same time, little is known about the attitude of Polish social researchers towards ethical committees. The article is based on in-depth interviews with sociologists and socio-cultural anthropologists, who conducted qualitative research, among others, with the vulnerable participants. The text discusses the views of researchers on how ethics committees in Poland should and should not work. The analysis focuses on several issues: the role of such bodies, the scope of their authority, the way they evaluate research ethics and their composition. The effect of the considerations is the proposal of a model of ethics committees for social research, which is an attempt to reconcile various opinions of researchers on this issue.

The aim of this article is the presentation and analysis of the selected ethical dilemmas and legal problems of a researcher in the study of the difficult way of life. There are a lot of questions about the ethical, decent and legal manner of research and behaviour in relation with the participators of the research. The practical aim of this article is the answer to the question – what should we do when we have various ethical dilemmas in our studies. A special difficult situation concerns the researcher – a  pedagogue of social rehabilitation, because by conducting research on the phenomena of social exclusion or social pathology, he/she describes and analyses situations related to crime, para-criminal behaviours, addictions, touches the problems of deep diagnosis of disorders or therapy. During scientific research, he / she ‘goes deeper’ into difficult situations, ethical dilemmas, and brushes against legal problems. The guarantee of his/her safety, but above all the safety of respondents, is the legal awareness and ethical responsibility of the pedagogue. Although the article is not a complete and comprehensive study, it responds to the needs of researchers who themselves have to answer many questions about legal issues and solve any ethical dilemmas themselves in the process of collecting and developing data.

Opis:
Covert participant observation is an example of ethically controversial quality method applied in social studies. This article presents the main dilemmas faced by researchers analysing difficult environments in order to gather valuable data in the most harmless for the subjects of their research way. The knowledge about the possible strategies is provided by three quoted examples of field research carried out in isolated environments.
Niejawna obserwacja uczestnicząca stanowi przykład etycznie dyskusyjnej metody jakościowej, stosowanej w naukach społecznych. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje główne dylematy, z którymi badacze analizujący trudne środowiska muszą się zmierzyć, aby zgromadzić wartościowe dane w nieszkodliwy dla obiektów ich badań sposób. Wiedzy na temat możliwych strategii, dostarczają trzy przytoczone przykłady badań terenowych, realizowanych w środowiskach izolowanych.

The paper concerns the idea of entrepreneurial ethics in scholastic texts. The sources, methods of research, and general historical preliminaries are discussed. In the methodology of the research Max Weber’s categories of economic exchange, entrepreneurship and entrepreneur are invoked. Medieval notions and concepts, such as iustus mercator, industria, and bonum commune are analyzed in the context of these socio-economic categories. Texts from the middle of the XIIIth century to the middle of XVth century are taken into consideration, in particular such canonists and theologians as Chiaro of Florence (Casus fratris Claris), Thomas Aquinas, Giles of Lesines, Henry of Ghent, Peter Olivi, Matthew of Cracow, Bernardine of Siena, and Antonine of Florence. The merchant’s guide by Benko Kutruljević(Benedetto Cotrugli) is considered too, as an example of reception of scholastic thought at a more practical level. In the topic discussed the particularity of Latin Christianity in the late medieval period, in comparison to other epochs and civilizations, is linked to the new idea of work and to certain cultural phenomena, including: the ethical focus of scholastic doctors, the idea of volunteer poverty, and Christian concept of the gift (referred to particularly in the Sermon on the Mount: Luke 6, 20–45). The system of terms and notions – by which entrepreneurship and economic activity were defi ned – influenced in some way the mentality and social practice. In practice, the evaluation of entrepreneurial activity was related to different systems of norms, which was expressed by the notion of forum. This could be: Roman law (forum civilis), canons, and practical theology (forum Dei). In the final case of forum Dei, the individual confession, introduced by the Church in the XIIIth century, was of crucial significance.

Dziennikarstwo jako forma służby publicznej wymaga od wykonujących tę profesję osób kierowania się pewnymi szczególnymi zasadami etyki zawodowej. To od niej zależy jakość przekazów dziennikarskich, a tym samym także sposób, w jaki odbiorcy tych przekazów poznają rzeczywistość. Celem zaprezentowanych w artykule badań było poznanie opinii studentów dziennikarstwa na temat tego, jak postrzegają oni dziennikarzy pod kątem stosowanych przez nich zasad etycznych w ich pracy nad materiałami informacyjnymi. Badaniami objęto studentów wszystkich roczników dziennikarstwa i komunikacji społecznej Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego. Wyniki badań pokazują, że ocena ta jest stosunkowo krytyczna – badani postrzegają dziennikarzy jako okazjonalnie łamiących pewne standardy i kierujących się na równi interesem społecznym, jak i pragmatycznie postrzeganym rozwojem własnej kariery.
Journalism, as a form of public service, requires for the journalists to be guided by specific rules of professional ethics. The quality of journalistic messages depends on it, and thus also the way in which the recipients of these messages learn about reality. The aim of the research presented in the article was to find out the opinions of journalism students on how they perceive journalists in terms of the ethical principles they apply in their work. The research covered students of journalism and social communication at the University of Rzeszów. The results of the research shows that this assessment is relatively critical - journalists are perceived as occasionally breaking certain standards and guided by both the social interest and the pragmatical development of their own careers.

Opis:
The article discusses ethical dilemmas in qualitative research with children and proposes potential solutions. The conduct of social researchers is regulated by strict ethical standards, but studies of children are fraught with numerous doubts and pitfalls. The author describes ethical dilemmas during an ethnographic study of 5-year-olds, which investigated the peer learning process in preschoolers. The following ethical aspects of social research were discussed: a child’s informed consent to participate in a study, the risk of collecting unimportant research material, the observer effect and the risk of data bias, the risk of negative reinforcement in studies of children, data confidentiality and disclosure of the information relating to the study site. The dynamic character of research with children, the effect of context on ethical decision-making, and the need to balance the role of a researcher with other social roles were emphasized.
Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia etyczne dylematy, przed jakimi może stanąć badacz jakościowy w trakcie badań z udziałem dzieci oraz możliwe sposoby ich rozstrzygnięcia. Mimo istnienia etycznych standardów w badaniach społecznych, eksploracja środowiska dziecięcego nastręcza licznych wątpliwości i pułapek na tym polu. Omawiane problemy pojawiły się w toku etnograficznej obserwacji 5-latków, mającej na celu badanie przebiegu procesu uczenia się rówieśniczego dzieci w wieku przedszkolnym. Z perspektywy etyki omówiono następujące kwestie: świadomej zgody dzieci na udział w badaniach; ryzyka zbierania nieprzydatnego materiału badawczego; efektu badacza i niebezpieczeństwa formowania danych; zagrożenia wzmacniania negatywnych zachowań dzieci w toku obserwacji; poufności danych i wykorzystywania przez badacza wiedzy o badanym terenie. W artykule położono nacisk na dynamikę badań z udziałem dzieci, zależność podejmowanych decyzji etycznych od kontekstu oraz konieczność balansowania obserwatora między rolą badacza a innymi rolami społecznymi.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present and analyze the legal problems and ethical dilemmas of researchers studying difficult ways of life. There are a lot of questions about the ethical, acceptable and legal ways of research and in relation to the participants of the research. The practical aim of this article is to answerthe question what we should do when we face different ethical dilemmas in our studies. A special difficult situation occurs to the researcher – pedagogue of social rehabilitation, because by conducting research on the phenomena of social exclusion or social pathology they describe and analyze situations related to crime, para-criminal behaviors, addictions, and provide profound diagnosis of disorders or therapy. During scientific research, the scholar penetrates the difficult situations, faces ethical dilemmas and encounters legal problems. Legal awareness and ethical responsibility are the guarantees of the pedagogue’s safety but above all the safety of the respondents. Although the article is not a complete and comprehensive study, it responds to the needs of researchers who themselves have to answer many questions about legal issues and solve many ethical dilemmas in the process of collecting and developing data.
