Opis:
Gullies developed on sandy lithologies are scarce. Such landforms have developed in the sandy deposits of the Cretaceous 'Utrillas' facies within the Segovia province of Central Spain. They appear at the slopes of a group of mesas and cuestas located at the edge of the northern piedmont of the Guadarrama Mountains of the Spanish Central System. The activity of the different geomorphic processes acting in these gullies, as well as their connectivity, are being characterized and quantified. This study was preceded by reconnaissance methods, whereas presently technologically advanced and more accurate techniques are being utilized. The new methods are applied in an experimental catchment (1.26 ha). They include: i) an automatic Reid-type (formerly termed Birkbeck) slot bedload sampler for continuous monitoring of bedload flux and for continuous sampling of bedload; siphons for sampling the suspended load; and a Parshall flume to monitor water discharge. Jointly, these instruments allow to study the fluvial dynamics at the catchment mouth; ii) topographic surveys undertaken by a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) to quantify the activity of gravitational, overland flow and fluvial processes in different sediment source areas within the gully basin; iii) micro runoff and erosion plots to monitor the infiltration and erosive response of different Hydrologic Response Units (HRU) comprising the interior of the catchment. This ensemble of novel methods has started providing patterns of sediment movement within the gully system.

Opis:
Water erosion under sugar beet and spring wheat was studied in runoff-plot experiment on loess slope. Canopy cover factor (C) of the USLE was used to evaluate a protective function of crops. The factor was determined directly as a ratio of soil loss from standard plots of length of 22.1 m, with crops and fallow. Results showed that C factor for sugar beet was 0.96, and for wheat - 0.04. Such high C value for sugar beet was the effect of heavy rainstorm at the plant emergence, when small canopy cover did not allow to limit the erosion. Studies carried with a system of plots of different length pointed that the effective distance of sediment transport ranged from 3.9 to 13.2 m for sugar beet, and from 2.6 to 4.5 m for spring wheat. Results of the studies showed that during processes of surface (interrill) erosion, transport of soil material prevails on short distances, whereas deposition took place inside the longer plots.

Opis:
The aim of the study performed in years 2007-2009 in the Suwałki Lakeland was assessed the intensity of soil erosion and runoff on a sandy slope under different cultivation. The study also focused on analysis of selected factors affecting the erosion (intensity of rainfalls, erosion susceptibility of soil, vegetation cover). Measurements were performed on the standard USLE plots inclined 8°. The mean annual erosion amounted to 0,2 t ha⁻¹ under cereals (rye and oat), 2,1 t ha⁻¹ under potatoes planted in rows parallel to the slope gradient, and 2,75 t ha⁻¹ on the black fallow. Experimentally determined index of erosion susceptibility K was 0,0041. The mean annual value of the canopy factor C was 0,064 for cereals and 0,8 for potatoes. Short rainfall events of 20-30mm and erosivity 100-200 MJ mm ha⁻¹h⁻¹ are characteristic for the study area. The results obtained for the sandy slope support previous findings that such short-term events play a significant role in soil erosion. Effectivity of such events strongly depends on the vegetation cover as they are responsible for 25-30% of soil loss under potatoes and 45-50% under cereals.
