Opis:
The provision of a reliable water-supply system is essential for the development and well-being of urban communities. Samdrupjongkhar Thromde, located in Bhutan, has been facing water supply challenges despite the presence of a water treatment plant. The non-perennial nature of the current water source coupled with malfunctions in water pumps has led to acute water shortages in the municipality. To address this issue, this study carried out a feasibility investigation and designed a gravity water supply system by conducting an EPANET (Environment Protection Agency Network Evaluation Tool) analysis. The study involved field visits to identify potential water sources, and a topographic survey using RTK (Real Time Kinematics) technology to determine the optimal pipeline route. The EPANET analysis was then conducted to evaluate the hydraulic performance of the initial route. Based on these findings, a final water pipeline route was selected considering factors such as terrain characteristics, construction feasibility, avoidance of negative water pressure, and minimum encroachment of private land. The results showed that the maximum pressure head within the pipeline system reached 296 m with a maximum water flow velocity of 5 m/s. However, at the outlet, the pressure head decreased to 70 m and the velocity decreased to 2 m/s. Two Break Pressure Tanks (BPT) were strategically placed to achieve this pressure reduction. The chosen pipe materials and their placement ensure the long-term reliability and functionality of the water supply system, while considering maintenance convenience and terrain characteristics.

Modernisation of marine power plants in the transport vessel fleet to satisfy the requirements of the International Maritime Organization is an urgent scientific and technical problem. Currently, the use of catalytic selective filters, dry and wet scrubber systems and exhaust gas recirculation for marine diesel engines is widely used for this purpose. An analysis of the use of ejection gas-air coolers is presented as an additional method of emission reduction. However, the use of such device does not neutralise the harmful emissions of power plant engines, but only increases the volume concentration of their exhaust gases. But this will help to increase the efficiency of dispersion of harmful emissions, by reducing the concentration of harmful emissions to values not exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations. Its efficiency depends on the load mode of the diesel engine. It is found that the initial concentration of harmful substances in combustion products due to their dilution with fresh air at 100% engine load is reduced by about 50%. The values of the reduction of the concentration and temperature of exhaust gases with the reduction of the engine load to 75% and 50% depending on the louvre angle are obtained. It is proved that ejection gas-air coolers can be an effective additional means for compliance with modern environmental parameters, especially when vessels are in special areas of the world’s oceans.

This paper attempts to conduct a comparative life cycle environmental analysis of alternative versions of a product that was manufactured with the use of additive technologies. The aim of the paper was to compare the environmental assessment of an additive-manufactured product using two approaches: a traditional one, based on the use of SimaPro software, and the authors’ own concept of a newly developed artificial intelligence (AI) based approach. The structure of the product was identical and the research experiments consisted in changing the materials used in additive manufacturing (from polylactic acid (PLA) to acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)). The effects of these changes on the environmental factors were observed and a direct comparison of the effects in the different factors was made. SimaPro software with implemented databases was used for the analysis. Missing information on the environmental impact of additive manufacturing of PLA and ABS parts was taken from the literature for the purpose of the study. The novelty of the work lies in the results of a developing concurrent approach based on AI. The results showed that the artificial intelligence approach can be an effective way to analyze life cycle assessment (LCA) even in such complex cases as a 3D printed medical exoskeleton. This approach, which is becoming increasingly useful as the complexity of manufactured products increases, will be developed in future studies.

The investment policy applied by seaport authorities has a great impact on the state of the natural environment in coastal regions. Unfortunately, in many cases, their environmental efforts are limited to the issues which are defined by the applicable legal regulations determined by International Maritime Organization, the Organization of United Nations and the European Commission etc. However, in recent years we can observe significant improvement in this area, especially in the seaports of Northern Europe. They often decide on highly capital-intensive pro-ecological investments allowing to reduce the level of pollution emitted from cruise ships during their handling in ports, such as e. g. the opportunity of connecting vessels to the shore-side energy supply systems. Various solutions in this area are currently used in the world. The ports in Northern Europe are currently the leaders in this area. The use of such solutions is cost-intensive, but it significantly reduces the level of pollution emitted by ships into the environment, and the level of noise and vibration caused by engines. This paper aims to assess the seaports' involvement in Northern Europe in the preparation of seaport infrastructure enabling cruise ships to be connected to the onshore power supply systems. The article contains the results of surveys conducted with the use of two methods to adjust the research technique to the respondents’ needs, i.e. CASI (Computer-Assisted Self Interviewing) and EMS (Electronic Mail Survey). The empirical research was conducted among the seaports in Northern Europe. The results of the survey may be of interest to seaport authorities and cruise ship owners.

Currently, the design of garment styles is weakly supporting the MWD concept. It is kept fixed during all its very changeable manufacturing process, thereby increasing pre- and post-consumer fabric wastes. To improve the situation the final values of construction parameters which influence fabric use efficiency should be determined for every unique production order only in the garment manufacturing process. Four garment styles were tested to see how light changes in their width and length influence fabric use efficiency. Even minimal reduction of these parameters can give noticeable fabric savings. Different values of these parameters create slightly different shapes of pattern pieces, and with it, give a huge number of new possibilities to create more efficient production markers. The authors found a way how to make the garment designing process more efficient, as well as, to create a “virtual bridge” between garment designing and the manufacturing phase. Both improvements could give serious benefits: reduced fabric use and product price, as well as, reduced pre- and post-consumer textile material wastes.

The environmental state of rice irrigation systems (RIS) is determined by many factors, including natural ones (soil, topographical, hydrogeological, and climatic factors) and technological ones (irrigation norm, design, and parameters of irrigation and drainage networks, etc). The most significant influence on the ecological reclamation state of the RIS carries is effected by its drainage network (DN). The need to maintain a flushing water regime with specific filtration rates to prevent secondary salinization in the Danube Delta’s rice systems is a crucial aspect of managing these agricultural areas. In the saline areas of rice systems located in the Danube Delta, the DN must ensure the maintenance of the flushing water regime with the rates of filtration ranging between 10 to 12 mm/day. This is a prerequisite for preventing secondary salinization of irrigated lands of these rice systems. According to the results of studies, the filtration from the surface of the irrigation checks of the Danube Delta RIS has been established, and its values in the area of the rice check vary significantly. Different intensity of filtration in the area of rice checks causes the difference in mineralization of groundwater and in the content of salts in the soil. This leads to the fact that the same rice check created various natural reclamation conditions and different productivity of cultivated crops.

The considerations conducted in this work are aimed at identifying the design environmental maturity of enterprises producing parts and components of technical means of agricultural transport. So far, both in Poland and abroad, no comprehensive research (based on a detailed analysis of the problem) has been undertaken on design maturity, defined through the prism of environmental dimensions, in relation to Polish producers of the agricultural machinery sector. In order to fill the existing gap in knowledge, a series of studies was undertaken to identify whether the surveyed enterprises are design-oriented, taking into account, in addition to traditional postulates (economics, society), also environmental postulates reflecting their eco-maturity. Given the empirical evidence confirming the existence of a strong relationship between a company’s market success and sustainable management throughout the product life cycle, the following line of research aggregates them into desirable ones.

Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje problematykę rozwijania dziecięcej proaktywności z wykorzystaniem design thinking jako metody wpisującej się w nurt edukacji dla zrównoważonego rozwoju. W związku z postępującym kryzysem klimatycznym głównym celem przeprowadzonych badań było określenie, w jaki sposób metoda design thinking wspiera rozwój proaktywności w zakresie działań na rzecz ochrony przyrody u dzieci z klasy III szkoły podstawowej. W metodologii zastosowano badania w działaniu, które były prowadzone w paradygmacie konstruktywistycznym, interpretacyjnym. Analiza uzyskanych wyników pokazała, że w trakcie procesu design thinking, obejmującego etapy: „Poczuj”, „Projektuj”, „Działaj” i „Inspiruj”, dzieci rozwijały swoją proaktywność i podejmowanie inicjatywy m.in. poprzez obserwowania i diagnozowanie problemów otaczającej ich rzeczywistości, rozwijanie umiejętności negocjacji, podejmowania decyzji, aktywnego uczenia się, wyznaczania celów, projektowania własnego działania, poszukiwania informacji, konstruowania strategii rozwiązywania problemów, ewaluacji własnych działań czy zarządzania procesami uczenia się.
The article deals with the issue of developing children’s proactivity using design thinking as a method of education for sustainable development. In the context of the ongoing climate crisis, the main objective of the research was to determine how the design thinking method develops children's proactivity towards nature. The methodology was based on action research, which was conducted in a constructivist, interpretive paradigm. The analysis of the obtained results showed that during the design thinking process, which consisted of four stages: “Feel”, “Design”, “Act” and “Inspire”, children developed their proactivity and initiative by, among others, observing and diagnosing the problems of the surrounding reality, developing the skills of negotiation, decision making, active learning, goal setting, designing their own action, searching for information, constructing problem solving strategies, evaluating their own actions, and managing the learning process.

The architectural form of buildings is determined by many factors, one of the most important is construction technology. It remains in a close and inseparable relationship with architectural design. Contemporary technologies in construction are constantly subject to improvements, streamlining, changes aimed at increasing all kinds of efficiency (cost, thermal efficiency, labor input, etc.). One of today's widely discussed determinants of changes in the way buildings are designed and constructed is environmental issue. An awareness of environmental degradation and climate change and their consequences prompts the search for increasingly sustainable solutions. This paper summarizes the research on prefabricated solutions and their implementation, especially in single-family residential architecture. This article presents pre-design, design, and post-design experiences related to planning and realization of single-family houses with prefabricated wall technology made of light expanded clay concrete. The authors implemented comparative qualitative and quantitative research through case studies, the method also uses experiences from their own research by design practice. The advantages and disadvantages of prefabrication in the selected technology are presented. The authors attempt to answer the question of whether the individual architectural design approach is reflected in the relevant environmental considerations, including, first, those related to the mitigation of climate change and adaptation to its consequences, and to what extent the discussed technology fits into the assumptions of climate and environmentally responsible design.

For environmental governance to be more effective and transformative, it needs to enhance the presence of experimental and innovative approaches for participation. This enhancement requires a transformation of environmental governance, as too often the (public) participation process is set up as a formal obligation in the development of a proposed intervention. This article, in search of alternatives, and in support of this transformation elaborates on spaces where participatory and deliberative governance processes have been deployed. Experiences with two mediated participation methodologies – community art and visual problem appraisal – allow a demonstration of their potential, relevance and attractiveness. Additionally, the article analyzes the challenges that result from the nature of these arts-based methodologies, from the confrontational aspects of voices overlooked in conventional approaches, and from the need to rethink professionals’ competences. Considering current environmental urgencies, mediated participation and social imaginaries still demonstrate capacities to open new avenues for action and reflection.

Opis:
Kunhar River hydrology and hydraulic design of a bridge on this river are being studied using HEC-Geo-RAS and Hydrologic Engineering Centers River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). The river flows in the northern part of Pakistan and is 170 km long. On both sides of the river, there are residential settlements. The river hydraulics is studied by using 30-metre remotely sensed shuttle radar topographic mission - digital elevation model (SRTM DEM) and Arc Map. 32 cross-sections are imported from Geographic Information System (GIS) to HEC-RAS. On historical peak flow results, the extreme value frequency distribution is applied, and a flood is determined for a 100-year return period, with a discharge estimated as 2223 cubic metres. Three steady flow profiles are adopted for HEC-RAS, the first is for the maximum historical peak data, the second is for the 100-year return period, and the third profile is for the latter 100-year period with a safety factor of 1.28. With remote sensing-based assessments, the proposed location for a bridge is determined and then verified with a field survey which was physically conducted. The maximum water height estimated in the river is about 4.26 m. This bridge will facilitate about 50 thousand population of Masahan and its surroundings. It will create a shortest link between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir and thus will enhance tourism and trade activities.

The aim of this paper is to review and introduce neuroscience research whose results offer the possibility or potential possibility for use in the discipline of architecture. This study is a proposal for a substantive introduction to systematics and a detailed description of the use of particular research methods at each stage of the design process. The article discusses necessary definitions and a historical outline of the interdiscipline, which was formed by combining architecture and neuroscience (neuroarchitecture). The most important information concerning the use of particular neuroscience research in architecture are also discussed, such as: observational and experimental methods from the field of environmental psychology, fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging), eye tracking, VR (virtual reality) and the EDA wristbands.
Celem artykułu jest przegląd i przybliżenie badań z zakresu neuronauk, których wyniki wskazują na możliwość lub potencjał zastosowania ich w architekturze. Niniejsze opracowanie jest propozycją merytorycznego wprowadzenia do systematyki i szczegółowego opisu wykorzystania poszczególnych metod badawczych na każdym etapie procesu projektowego. W artykule omówiono kluczowe definicje i rys historyczny neuroarchitektury - interdyscypliny, która ukształtowała się dzięki połączeniu architektury i neuronauk. Przytoczono również najważniejsze informacje dotyczące wykorzystania poszczególnych metod i narzędzi właściwych neuronaukom w architekturze, takich jak: metody obserwacyjne i eksperymentalne z zakresu psychologii środowiskowej, fMRI (funkcjonalny rezonans magnetyczny), okulografia (eye tracking), VR (virtual reality) oraz opaski EDA.

Opis:
Every year, the dynamics of implementation of projects aimed at improving the efficiency of energy use is gradually increasing at different levels and in different industries. It has spread in the areas of design, modernization and reconstruction of energy-efficient buildings and structures, design and construction of elements of industrial infrastructure, and technological production processes. Introduction of such projects is a priority for enterprises and companies of various types of economic activity. Thus, the leading industries develop strategies to improve environmental safety and energy efficiency - shipping is no exception, where the process of improving energy efficiency is carried out through various mechanisms, ultimately leading to a reduction in emissions of pollutants, but having a negative impact on the performance of the commercial operation of the ship. Problems of ensuring energy efficiency along with increasing requirements for environmental safety of transport and strengthening the responsibility of shipowners become the focus of research of modern theory and practice of operation of means of maritime transport. The issues of improvement of universal principles of energy efficiency within individual shipping companies and development of tools for economic analysis of energy efficiency of own fleet, search for new ways of forming professional competencies of ship crew members in the field of energy efficiency continue to be topical as well.
