The aim of this paper is to investigate the environmental credentials of steel buildings and to present the environmental impact categories and values in a steel housing activity through a case study of steel office building. In this framework, a life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was applied, which provides an understanding of the overall environmental performance of a housing construction. The relative influence of the service lives of different building components compared to the energy use of the buildings with a different energy efficiency is presented. As the analysis showed, recycling of construction waste becomes a critical issue, which can ensure a number of environmental benefits. The aim of this research activity was also to point out the need for an integrated approach in the design process, combining environmental performance assessment with structural calculations. Environmental impact assessment of the construction activity was carried out, following the inventory listing, in order to reach to useful conclusions on the environmental study of the project. Although steel and concrete proved to be responsible for the negative environmental impacts the ability of reuse and recyclability of steel has decreased the negative impacts of steel construction on environmental burdens.

The paper is devoted to some problems connected with last modification of EU directive on energy efficiency, viz.: free choice of the measure concerning the improvement of energy efficiency, i.e. final or primary energy consumption, corresponding energy savings or energy-consumption index; however without cumulative consumption or cumulative savings of primary energy. In EU directive it has been stressed the importance of measurements systems (reliable measurement information); but has not been recommended any advanced validation of measurements results, nor energy auditing or algorithms of calculating the energy savings due to improvement of energy efficiency concerning large industrial plants. Evaluation of complex buildings should be realized by means of the system method (input-output analysis). The separate problem is devoted to application of thermo-ecological approach in the analysis of complete results of improving the energy efficiency. Human activity is connected with the depletion of nonrenewable resources, including primary energy, due to not only production of consumer goods but also the necessity of compensating the unfavourable effects of harmful emissions from energy-technological processes. Therefore the index of energy-ecological efficiency has been proposed as the most competent evaluation of improvement energy efficiency of production processes and systems.

Nowadays, increasing number of machines and off-road vehicles are equipped with elastomeric, mainly rubber, tracked chassis. Rubber tracks and belts combine the most important advantages of both: pneumatic tires and conventional tracks made from metal links. In spite of significant benefits, rubber tracked chassis is a novel and uncommon design solution, as the application of rubber tracks and belts still brings up many severe problems. Consequently, an urgent need to overcome these problems exists. In The Division of Off-Road Machine and Vehicle Engineering (DORMVE) an intensive research, pertaining to rubber-tracked chassis has been conducted for many years. In the very beginnings, the investigation was carried on in cooperation with German companies INTERTRACTOR, IAMT and IBAF. As a result, numerous original and innovative design solutions, which became a subject of European, American and Japanese patents, were developed. However, some issues have not yet been resolved. Present research of DORMVE is aimed at identification of problems concerning energy efficiency of rubber-tracked chassis. The main objective of current investigation is to improve the energy efficiency. To do so a comprehensive optimisation process is to be carried out. Within the following article, a classification of aforementioned problems will be discussed. Research facilities in laboratory of DORMVE and exemplary results, which have already been obtained, will be also presented.

This article includes an overview of methods of energy efficiency improvement in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) applied in Poland. It describes the experience of the implementation of energy efficiency programme in Poland, introduced in 2013 by Polish Agency for Enterprise Development’s. Evaluation of the programme shows that energy savings were over 6-times higher than expected by the programme’s author before its implementation and amounted to 53 TJ. Financial savings were almost 5-times higher than expected and amounted to PLN 7.3m. Guidelines for decision makers which would be responsible for the development of similar programmes in the future are presented.

Lighting technologies developed significantly in the last decade. New LED light sources, dedicated luminaires and improved lighting control techniques gave rise to new possibilities in improving energy efficiency of lighting solutions. The article is an overview of interior, road and exterior architectural object lighting design strategies. It also presents design considerations that directly impact lighting conditions and energy eff iciency. Practical examples of the application of basic design strategies, accompanied by the obtained energy results, are also depicted. Issues discussed in the article may be useful in researching and designing interior and road lighting, as well as f loodlighting. They can also be useful in planning and implementing strategies aimed at improving lighting conditions and energy efficiency of lighting solutions.

Manufacturing engineering is supposed to provide analyses related to various aspects of manufacturing and production in order to maximise technological, energy, and economic gains in relevant production processes. The present paper gives a recapitulation of several publications by present authors, presenting considerations of the energy efficiency of biofuel production. The energy efficiency is understood as the ratio of energy obtained from biofuels produced basing on crops from a particular area to the energy required to satisfy needs of all subsidiary processes assuring correct functioning of the production system, starting from operations aimed to obtain agricultural crops, and ending with the conversion of the crops onto biofuels. Derived by the present authors, the mathematical model of energy efficiency of biofuel production is extended to a more general form, and applied to the analysis of quantitative relations between energy efficiency of sc. “energy plantations”, and further elements of biofuel production system converting harvested biomass into biofuel. Investigations are aimed towards the determination of the role of biomass as a source of energy.

Energy efficiency is not only energy yield related to the energy consumption in a specific device or building but also the possibility of optimal use of the stored energy in a determine area or in the system, without the necessity for its transmission. Generation, distribution and balancing of energy demand, in a limited area, becomes an energy cluster in which, under the agreement of the entities forming the cluster, there is a possibility for effective management of energy produced and its storage, according to the requirements and assumptions of the capacity market. The purpose of such an initiative is primarily the effective development of distributed energy, which does not have to be based solely on renewable energy sources, but can also use conventional sources, according to dedicated management models. The whole project is intended to improve energy security, have a positive impact on the environment, strengthen the local economy and generate lower costs for the end user. According to the RES Act, a member of an energy cluster can be an enterprise, a natural person, a local government unit and their organizational units. It can also include small, medium and large public transport companies and other entities functioning in the area covered by the energy cluster. A cluster initiative may be established and operate in an area no larger than five municipalities or one county, and its purpose is to obtain financial and non-financial benefits for the members of the energy cluster.

Aim: The aim is to recognize the main determinants of the energy efficiency improvement in transport in Poland in the years 2000-2014 using structural and index decomposition analysis, and to identify areas where there is still potential for further reduction of energy consumption. Design / Research methods: Techniques used to analyse changes in energy use are: structural decomposition analysis and index decomposition analysis. Each of these two methods is characterized by distinctive, unique techniques and approaches, as they have developed quite independently. Index decomposition analysis measures the impact of energy efficiency gains on the level of energy consumption, at the most detailed sector disaggregation level allowed by the available data. Whereas structural decomposition analysis allows to analyse the impact of the external factors, such as technological, demand, and demographic effects, on the fluctuations of the total energy consumption. The similarities and differences between the two approaches are summarized and illustrated with a numerical example of Polish transport. Conclusions / findings: The article recognizes the main determinants of the energy efficiency improvement in transport sector in Poland in the years 2000-2014. In case of Poland ODEX shows an overall progress of energy efficiency in transport by 24.3%. Results obtained with decomposition analysis indicate large divergences in energy efficiency improvements between modes of transport and vehicle types and identify areas where there is still potential for further reduction of energy consumption. Results from decomposing structure of energy use, show activity effect to be main reason for energy use growth. The distribution of each mode in total traffic of passengers and goods changes toward less energy efficient modes. The only factor driving down the energy use is energy savings.Originality / value of the article: Using two methods of decomposition analysis and comparing obtained outcomes allows to get a broader view on energy use trends. Results presented in this article are a good starting point for further detailed analysis of changes in energy use of transport.

Together with certain non-governmental organizations and media concerns about environmental protection, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been strict on controlling undesirable effects on the environment and, consequently, forcing shipping companies to minimize their emissions. Besides, today’s highly advanced technology companies over the world have developed various innovative systems that can be utilized to minimize carbon emission, thus giving assurance to relevant investors that their investments are most likely to turn out well with a considerable financial gain in the short or long term. Despite all such favorable developments, in a general look, shipping companies seem reluctant in making use of technologies providing efficiency in energy consumption. This reluctance has eventually brought about the term “Energy Efficiency Gap”. This research conducts a questionnaire, created by Acciaro et al. [1], among the shipping companies in Turkey. 20 respondent companies, who represent 26 percent of the Turkish owned merchant marine fleet of over 1000 gross tonnage in terms of deadweight cargo capacity, participated in the research. The Pearson correlation analysis was used, and interpretations were made according to the obtained statistical values. The aim of the research was to identify reasons and points restraining the use of new technologies regarding energy efficiency, as well as to develop proposals for the innovators in this field about how to overcome this handicap concerning technical and managerial aspects of gaining energy efficiency.

In the paper, a monitoring system of a refrigeration unit is presented. This system consists of several measurement elements e.g. (pressure, temperature, energy, etc. sensors) connected using a serial RS485 network. A measurement level is a source of data for both SCADA environment and a PLC controller which are essential elements of the whole control system. The first stage of the study was related to the selection of measurement devices and a construction of a serial network. The authors also described how to link a serial 485 network with a PLC controller and how to introduce it into TCP/IP network. In the first part of the paper, there is presented a refrigeration unit as a subject of the monitoring. Then the authors describe a theoretical background needed for the energy efficiency calculation. After that the system structure with selected details about hardware integration and SCADA software implementation is presented. The final part contains selected real time experiments to show typical working modes of the refrigeration unit and to prove the efficiency of the developed monitoring system.

Research background: Most of the studies and their authors focus on the social and economic impacts of energy-saving behavior. However, they do not focus on the psychological factors affecting the efficiency of energy consumption in households. Lithuania has a lack of a unified and justified opinion on psychological factors that affect the energy efficiency of households. Purpose of the article: The main objective of the article is to identify the psychological factors that influence energy efficiency in households and to identify the appropriate measures to change the individual's energy consumption behavior. Methods: The article was based on analysis of scientific literature and expert evaluation, when experts selected the most influencing psychological factors. Expert valuation allowed to set the right conditions in which individuals are more easily assimilated by means of energy saving. Findings: In most cases, economic and technological factors significantly influence household energy consumption. Increased energy-efficient equipment production and supply is causing an energy consumption growth in households, because they are more inclined to buy and use more efficient electrical equipment. An investigation has showed that the energy consumption is strongly influenced by some cultural and psychological factors: with greater public openness to innovation, the households tend to use energy more efficiently. Also, some psychological indicators have significant impact on energy consumption has - frequently the more pronounced neuroticism or extraversion rate. Since the research was performed only in Lithuania, in the future it will seek to carry out an investigation in several countries and to compare a various factors on the proposed measures and the efficiency of household energy consumption.

W artykule przedstawiono problematykę efektywności energetycznej zwracając szczególną uwagę na obszar bezpieczeństwa dostaw energii i bezpieczeństwa ekologicznego. Omówiono krajowe i unijne regulacje prawne dotyczące efektywności energetycznej. Zwrócono szczególną uwagę na ustawę o efektywności energetycznej. Przedstawiono zasady realizacji obowiązku uzyskania oszczędności energii oraz przeprowadzania audytu energetycznego przedsiębiorstwa. Omówiono zadania jednostek sektora publicznego w zakresie efektywności energetycznej. Przedstawiono programy i środki służące poprawie efektywności na poziomie: krajowym, regionalnym i lokalnym. Zasadniczo obejmują one pięć grup środków: o charakterze horyzontalnym; w zakresie efektywności energetycznej budynków i w instytucjach publicznych; efektywności energetycznej w przemyśle; efektywności energetycznej w transporcie oraz efektywności wytwarzania i dostaw energii. Przedstawiono problematykę energochłonności krajowej gospodarki. Przeanalizowano wskaźniki energochłonności pierwotnej i finalnej oraz tempo ich zmian od 1990 r. Określono kierunki działań, które pozwolą na dalsze zmniejszenie energochłonności krajowej gospodarki. Przedstawiono analizę działań i rozwiązań umożliwiających poprawę efektywności energetycznej zwracając szczególną uwagę na sektor przemysłu i gospodarstwa domowe. Omówiono problematykę związaną ze zwiększeniem poziomu uwzględniania aspektów środowiskowych w zamówieniach publicznych w aspekcie poprawy efektywności energetycznej.
In this paper, selected aspects of energy efficiency are presented. Special attention is paid to energy supply security and environmental safety. National and the European Union legal regulations which describe energy efficiency, are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the Energy Efficiency Act. Principles of the implementation of the energy savings obligation and the obligation to conduct energy audits of enterprises are shown. Tasks of the public sector entities in the field of energy efficiency are discussed. Programs and measures aimed at improving energy efficiency at the national, regional and local levels are shown. Fundamentally, they include five groups of measures: horizontal measures, measures in respect of energy efficiency in the buildings of public institutions, energy efficiency measures in industry, energy efficiency measures in transport and efficiency in energy generation and supplies. The problems of national economy energy intensity are shown. The primary and the final energy intensity indicators and rate of their changes from 1990 are analysed. Directions of undertakings which allow for the further reduction in the energy intensity of national economy, are defined. An analysis of energy efficiency improving measures and solutions is performed. Special attention is paid to industry and households. Fields connected with increasing the degree of environmental aspects into account in public procurement in the aspect of energy efficiency improvement is described.

Over the past 50 years the use of air conditioning in non-domestic buildings has become a norm and an indicator of status. Today the rediscovering of the natural ventilation is a part of rediscovering the buildings’ energy efficiency, or maybe even a part of a wider approach, which is a desire to be closer to nature. The main task of all ventilation systems is to maintain an appropriate indoor air quality and to improve the indoor environment. Natural ventilation systems could do the above using less energy than mechanical systems. However, it requires also the implementation of other passive measures. The most important of them are: the reduction of the harmful air contaminants, the control of heat gains, the exposition of the building’s thermal mass and utilisation of the night cooling. Because of energy efficiency and thermal comfort reasons, in temperate climate ventilation systems have to work according to at least three scenarios: spring/autumn, winter and summer. The thermal comfort parameters in naturally ventilated buildings are usually more variable than in air-conditioned ones, what does not mean that the occupants will experience thermal discomfort. Therefore, thermal comfort in passively ventilated buildings should be evaluated according to the adaptive comfort standard, appropriated for the naturally ventilated buildings. The natural ventilation has its limits and probably not all buildings can be ventilated naturally. From the energy efficiency and thermal comfort reasons, implementing the mixed mode systems is sometimes more feasible. However, the real reason why the full potential of natural ventilation could not be explored is very often the lack of confidence in relying exclusively on it.

The energy performance and operational characteristics of the passenger lift investigated in this study were based on energy consumption data registered throughout the normal duty cycle. An overview is provided of available methods employed to evaluate the energy uptake of passenger lifts, relying mostly on energy consumption measurements taken on a real object over an idealised reference duty cycle. Measurement data were used to determine the energy efficiency rating of the lift during the trip cycle and in the standby mode and the energy demand levels, which are then to be compared with measurement results obtained under the service conditions.

The ship "Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)" has been formulated by the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) as a measure of the CO2 emission performance of ships. The ship EEDI is calculated based on characteristics of the ship at build, incorporating parameters including ship capacity, engine power and fuel consumption. Shipping is responsible for CO2 discharge of approximately 3.3% global emission and despite being an energy-efficient transport means, compared with other transport modes, there are opportunities for increasing energy efficiency. The EEDI requires a minimum energy efficiency level (CO2 emissions) per capacity mile (e.g. tonne mile) for different ship type and size sectors. With the level being tightened over time, the EEDI will stimulate continued technical development of all the components influencing the energy efficiency of a ship. The paper presents an overview of EEDI calculation method for container vessels and results of experimental approach. The experimental process results through comprehensive analysis of operational data, from modern container vessel, equipped with direct main propulsion unit have been introduced. Ship operators have already been implementing energy efficiency operational measures and set goals for reducing the energy consumption of their fleet. Performance and savings are not always monitored and reported. However, it can be foreseen that such activity when is successfully promoted, reduction of CO2 emissions can be achieved.

Opis:
Promising ways of energy efficiency gain of spindles with fluid flow bearings are offered. New design of journal hybrid flow bearing which contains spherical bearing pockets and adjustable valves with relay control system is offered to improve energy efficiency of spindle units of machine tools. To reduce power losses of fluid bearings at high speed special lubrication based on water with integrated system of corrosion protection is offered. Results of theoretical research of energy consumption of grinding machine tool with a new design of spindle hybrid bearings are presented. Power losses of the spindle unit with both new design and base design of journal bearings are assessed. Effectiveness of new design of spindle hybrid bearings at high operating speeds is shown.

In this work, the authors focused on analyzing the energy efficiency and dynamics during car acceleration, featuring investigation of acceleration dynamics under various acceleration intensities. The tests were performed in the speed range between 45 km/h and 120 km/h, at a constant gear ratio. This enabled obtaining variable dynamic parameters of the acceleration process, ranging from about 0.1 to 1.4 m/s2, and recording variation in fuel consumption from 6.28 to 27.03 dm3/100km. The study focused on determining the relation between fuel consumption, energy efficiency and vehicle acceleration depending on the available drivetrain power. The relation between fuel consumption and vehicle acceleration was described by using the dynamic index. The proposed dynamic index takes into account the energy (from burned fuel) and vehicle acceleration intensity to obtain an objective metric for characterizing the acceleration process. The aforementioned index takes the form of the passenger car movement energy quality index and can be related to widely known physical properties, thus ensuring its universality. The index expresses the energy expenditure within the time needed to accelerate a vehicle weighing 1kg by a 1m distance. As opposed to other criteria that are applied to the assessment of passenger cars dynamics, the index shows a high determination coefficient R2 in excess of 0.99, and can be used as a universal metric to test other vehicle types.
