Opis:
The aim of the paper is an attempt at analysing the contracted forms of the second-person singular of athematic verbs in Greek poetry. Verbs such as dÚnamai and ™p…stamai have forms with -sai and -hi, -ai in the present indicative middle and passive. Contemporary scholars express different views on where the contracted forms appear. The paper presents the opinions of ancient grammarians and modern linguists on the mentioned subject. The critical analysis of these opinions has been contrasted with the forms present in the poetry of archaic and classical period.

happy end
British cinema
Opis:
While the most recent cinema is about surprising us with strange formal solutions, whose finale is intended to completely confuse and outsmart us, Mike Leigh makes fi lms which surprise us with their “typicality”, at the same time (paradoxically) leading to fi nales that we may not expect. Among researchers on melodrama, there are voices clearly assessing happy endings negatively. It is pointed out that a happy ending oft en looks as if it were “tacked on” and artifi cial, ignoring the overall plot rather than being integral to the rest of the fi lm. In the case of Mike Leigh’s films, the situation looks (ostensibly) similarly. Leigh oft en leads the viewer through the dramatic lives of his characters, and watches the process of families’ lives being ruined, one aft er another, only to finally make them rise like a phoenix from the ashes. It may be stated that Leigh’s fi lms in a somewhat artifi cial way take advantage of the happy ending. Th is artifi ciality, however, is not about a banal or ridiculous ending, but about one we have not been prepared for by the director.

Opis:
Stem cells (SC) research is an important part of biotechnology that could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies. A lot of effort has been put to understand biology of the stem cells and to find genes and subsequently proteins that are responsible for their proliferation, self-renewal and differentiation. Different cytokines and growth factors has been used to expand stem cells, but no combination of these factors was identified that could effectively expand the most primitive stem cells. Recently, however, genes and receptors responsible for SC proliferation and differentiation have been described. Ligands for these receptors or these genes themselves are being already used for ex vivo expansion of stem cells and the first data are very promising. New markers, such as CXCR4 and CD133, have been discovered and shown to be present on surface of hematopoietic stem cells. The same markers were recently also found to be expressed on neuronal-, hepatic- or skeletal muscle-stem cells. By employing these markers several laboratories are trying to isolate stem cells for potential clinical use. New characteristics of stem cells such as transdifferentiation and cell fusion have been described. Our team has identified a population of tissue committed stem cells (TCSC). These cells are present in a bone marrow and in other tissues and they can differentiate into several cell types including cardiac, neural and liver cells.

The suffix -ιανός was a popular naming element in the Eastern Roman Empire. It is generally understood that this was the Greek rendering of Latin -ianus. In this article, Greek forms ending in this suffix attested in Egypt are examined in detail. The origin of these ‘Latinized’ names is traced, and particular attention is devoted to the parents who bestowed the names, as well as to the role of the dissemination of Roman citizenship in the naming type’s popularity.

Polish and Slovak formulas initiating and ending contacts
Opis:
The article aims at the confrontational presentation of the formulas that initiate and end contacts. The material that is being analysed comes from TV and Radio broadcasts, Internet, survey conducted among students and observations of Polish and Slovak official and unofficial language practices. The author pinpoints several rules of using the analysed formulas. These rules are determined by such factors as time, biology (age and sex), social context (views of the world and social roles). The article concludes itself with a proposal of the politeness model in Poland and Slovakia.

Opis:
The present paper deals with aspectuality and actionality in German and Polish. It could be shown that the lexical telic-atelic-opposition must not be mixed up with the grammatical perfective-imperfective-opposition. Furthermore, the author proves that within actionality there has to be made a sharp distinction between telicity considered as referring to the temporal boundedness of an action and the reaching of an envisaged aim called resultativeness.

Opis:
In considering the Yamanote Jijosha’s The Tempest, this paper explores the significance of performing Shakespeare in contemporary Japan. The company’s The Tempest reveals to contemporary Japanese audiences the ambiguity of Shakespeare’s text by experimenting with the postdramatic and a new acting style. While critically pursuing the meaning and possibility of theatre and performing arts today, this version of The Tempest powerfully presents a critical view of the blindness and dumbness of contemporary Japan, as well as the world represented in the play.
