Opis:
Age differences in emotional intelligence – are we getting better? Processing of emotional information in adolescence and mature age This study examined relationships between age and the ability to process emotional information. Emotion processing is defined as the ability to organize and represent emotional experience and includes the ability to recognize and label facial expressions of basic emotions, the ability to express emotions, and the ability to regulate the intensity with which emotions are perceived and experienced (Bland, Williams, Scharer, Manning, 2004). The ability to process emotional information is a basic concept of emotional intelligence (Mayer, Caruso, Salovey, 1999). The participants were 77 (37 females and 40 males) in two groups: adolescents (N=38) and middle-aged (N=39). Processing emotional information was measured by Processing of Emotional Information Test (Szczygieł, 2002), based on the theory of cognitive representation of emotion (Maruszewski, Ścigała, 1995). Hypotheses related to age differences, implying that older people process emotional information more accurately than younger was supported in relation to processing of more complex and differentiated material (nonverbal feature). The interpretation of results was performed in reference to the theory of socioemotional selectivity and the concept of postformal thinking. Socioemotional selectivity theory (Carstensen, 1995; Carstensen,Isaacowitz, & Charles, 1999) asserts that changes in the life of older adults result from motivational changes. The concept of postformal thinking assumes a progression in thinking from dualistic or absolutist thought to more subjectively determined modes of thinking in which the relativistic and/or dialectical nature of knowledge is more thoroughly understood (Labouvie-Vief, Diehl, 2000; Kielar-Turska, 2000; Gurba, 2006).

Opis:
Although emotion processing deficits have been implicated in schizophrenia since its original description, with symptoms including a “flat“ and “inappropriate“ affect, the extent and nature of emotion processing performance in schizophrenia are still unclear. Several studies have demonstrated that patients with schizophrenia have deficits in the processing of emotional facial expressions and these have included patients from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. The deficits seem to affect mainly the ability to name and discriminate expressions. Furthermore, performance correlates with symptom severity, which indicates that deficits in discriminating emotional aspects of facial expressions have clinical significance. Impairment in the specificity of emotion identification may lead to misunderstanding of social communication and may underlie difficulties in social adjustment experienced by people with schizophrenia. The aim of the paper is a review of current literature about emotional processing in patients with schizophrenia. Studies have examined the perception, experience, and expression of emotion in schizophrenia as well as the relation between performance on emotion and olfactory tasks. Studies on emotion expression repeatedly showed that individuals with schizophrenia display fewer overt expressions than nonpatient comparison subjects in verbal, facial, and acoustic channels. Studies on emotion experience tend to show a higher frequency of negative affect and a higher sensitivity to negative conditions and stress. Deficits in emotion recognition have been clearly identified for all channels studied. Studies on olfaction and emotion in schizophrenia revealed that olfactory and emotion recognition abilities appear significantly linked in schizophrenia.
W zakresie doświadczania emocji pacjenci w omawianej grupie częściej wyrażają negatywne emocje i dotkliwiej przeżywają negatywne warunki i stres. Deficyty w rozpoznawaniu emocji zostały opisane we wszystkich badanych kanałach. Badania w zakresie rozpoznawania emocji i zapachów ujawniają związek między wskazanymi procesami w przebiegu schizofrenii.

Opis:
The aim of the work is to compare mechanisms of semantic and emotional processing and memory. Targets (words and non-words) were primed (100 ms) by category name (semantic in Experiment 1 and emotional in Experiment 2). The congruency of prime and target was manipulated. The reaction time of lexical decisions and the effects of unintentional memorizing of word targets were measured. Activation of semantic (Experiment 1) and emotional (Experiment 2) nodes leads to faster processing of related concepts: congruent targets are processed faster than incongruent. Processing congruent primed emotional concepts depends on their modality: anger and joy words are processed faster than sadness. Thus, congruently primed activating emotional concepts are processed differently from congruently primed deactivating concepts. The effectiveness of unintentional memory of emotional and non-emotional concepts (words) is based on different mechanisms: congruently primed emotional words are better remembered than incongruently primed. The results are discussed in the framework of spreading activation theory and theory of emotional memory.

The present article is an attempt of placing a construct of Emotional Intelligence in the structure of a personality of a man. The Cognitive-Experiential Self-Theory of Epstein, that arranges different spheres of functioning of a man, refering them to different systems of processing information, was used as a point of reference. Emotional intelligence, understood as a set of abilities needed to process pieces of emotional information, as a multidimensional construct of different abilities fits in the action of experiential and rational systems - both marked out by Epstein. Each ability as a part of emotional intelligence belongseither to the firstor to the second system. One can come to a conclusion that like the majority of psychological processes of a man can be attributed to their level of unconsciousness, preconscious or conscious, so the emotional functioning on different levels of consciousness. The most basic, primary abilities of emotional intelligence belong to the experimental system of a direct regulation, whereas those developed later, evolving on the base of the first abilities, are used on the level of the rational system of the indirect regulation.

Emotional processing and social problem-solving are important for mental well-being. For example, impaired emotional processing is linked with depression and psychosomatic problems. However, little is known about crosscultural differences in emotional processing and social problem-solving and whether these constructs are linked. This study examines whether emotional processing and social problem-solving differs between Western (British) and Eastern European (Polish) cultures. Participants (N = 172) completed questionnaires assessing both constructs. Emotional processing did not differ according to culture, but Polish participants reported more effective social problem-solving abilities than British participants. Poorer emotional processing was also found to relate to poorer social problem-solving. Possible societal reasons for the findings and the implications of the findings for culture and clinical practice are discussed.

Opis:
Divorce or collapse of the partner relationship is among the more stressful and psychically challenging of experiences. No matter the circumstances, due to which we could understand divorce as a desired solution of irresolvable complications in relationships, it is a distressing experience that affects the life of an individual as well as that of the family as a system. Divorce does not have far-reaching consequences just for the partners, but also for the children and extended family, as well as society. After divorce, a new era begins, when it is necessary to re-adapt to life and during which hard feelings also emerge. Divorce represents loss: the loss of a partner, of social status, of identity as a married person, etc. During the process of facing divorce, successful emotional adaptation to the new situation, which may also be described facing loss, is of great significance. The process of mourning begins, during which it is necessary to face the reality of loss. When that does not happen, the individual cannot move on; this is the point at which dysfunctional and symptomatic behaviour emerges. This contribution will outline some of the aspects of divorce, focusing mainly on the emotional aspect of adapting to divorce, as well as some possibilities for successfully processing emotional complications during divorce through the process of relational family therapy.

Research on the representation of emotion in human memory has focused on the ways in which words that label an emotion (e.g., love, joy) or represent emotional components (e.g., death, butterfly) are learned, stored, and retrieved from memory. The current work reviews the ways in which these types of words have been distinguished from concrete and abstract words, the types of methodologies used to distinguish among word groups, and the ways in which these words are automatically processed in the bilingual speaker. While emotion words may be more readily processed and retrieved when they appear in the first language, other word types that are neutral with regards to arousal and valence may be processed similarly across languages. The current work also illustrates the ways in which this knowledge is important in advancing theories of language and cognition, attention, perception, and mental health. Future directions are discussed that elucidate the further applications of these interesting lines of research.

Presented studies investigated the specificity of visual and auditory modalities in attentional processing of emotion, and its association with temperamental dimensions and trait-like attentional control (AC). During preliminary study 30 participants were presented with the paper-pencil visual search task (Emotional Faces Attentional Test) and emotional prosody detection tasks (Emotional Prosody Test). Results revealed visual happiness superiority and auditory sadness superiority. During the main study, in addition to attentional performance, 51 subjects were administrated two questionnaires: EPQ-R and Attentional Control Scale. Introducing individual differences into analysis limited the general pattern of modality distinctiveness in attentional processing of emotional stimuli obtained in the preliminary study. Findings for all personality traits studied separately showed that Extraversion and low Neuroticism were associated with the visual sadness superiority. Whereas interactional analysis indicated effective visual threat processing in extraverts with good AC and effective friendly prosody detection when Neuroticism and AC remain in inverse relationship. Hence, we have found that processing emotional targets in both modalities is associated with temperament dimensions and their interactions with attentional control. Additionally, findings from both studies suggest that general psychological laws might be challenged by individual differences.

People use their voices to communicate not only verbally but also emotionally. This article presents theories and methodologies that concern emotional vocalizations at the intersection of psychology and digital signal processing. Specifically, it demonstrates the encoding (production) and decoding (recognition) of emotional sounds, including the review and comparison of strategies in database design, parameterization, and classification. Whereas psychology predominantly focuses on the subjective recognition of emotional vocalizations, digital signal processing relies on automated and thus more objective vocal affect measures. The article aims to compare these two approaches and suggest methods of combining them to achieve a more complex insight into the vocal communication of emotions.

The study investigates the use of speech signal to recognise speakers’ emotional states. The introduction includes the definition and categorization of emotions, including facial expressions, speech and physiological signals. For the purpose of this work, a proprietary resource of emotionally-marked speech recordings was created. The collected recordings come from the media, including live journalistic broadcasts, which show spontaneous emotional reactions to real-time stimuli. For the purpose of signal speech analysis, a specific script was written in Python. Its algorithm includes the parameterization of speech recordings and determination of features correlated with emotional content in speech. After the parametrization process, data clustering was performed to allows for the grouping of feature vectors for speakers into greater collections which imitate specific emotional states. Using the t-Student test for dependent samples, some descriptors were distinguished, which identified significant differences in the values of features between emotional states. Some potential applications for this research were proposed, as well as other development directions for future studies of the topic.

The paper aims to examine the relationship between three factors among Generation Z members: time spent on SNSs (Social Network Sites) activities, visual vs. linguistic emotional stimuli processing, and neural activation during the performance of visual vs. verbal tasks. Although generation Z is described as having worse emotional linguistic competence than it does a visual competence, there is a lack of experimental research documenting these dissimilarities. The study involved a group of 57 adults born between 1995-2000, i.e. representatives of Generation Z. The experiment consisted of two parts: the first devoted to the testing of emotion recognition from images (The Scale of Emotional Intelligence – Faces), and the second performing linguistic emotional tasks (The Emotion Understanding Test). During the tests a neuroimaging technique (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) was applied to examine and register neural cortical activity in the frontal, temporal, and occipital areas. The Social Network Sites Scale was used to assess the level of social network site use. Results showed that individuals representing Generation Z perform better in visual emotional task than in linguistic tasks. There is an association between SNSs use and brain activation. Gen Z who overuse SNSs present greater activation of the brain regions responsible for a greater cognitive effort such as frontal and prefrontal areas. The activation differences in the frontal and temporal cortical regions between high users of SNSs and low users document the impact of SNSs utilization on brain functioning and confirm that SNSs overuse can have a negative impact on linguistic emotional stimuli processing.
