    The creator and reformer of the turn-of-the-century theatre, Konstantin Stanislavsky, created one of the most famous acting systems still in use today. In An Actor’s Work: A Student’s Diary, Stanislavski presented a comprehensive set of recommended practices for stage creation, which he developed based on years of observations. The artist also showed that in order to better understand how one should act on stage, it would be good to make use of psychological knowledge, which was not widely available to him at the time, also due to the fact that psychology as a scientific discipline was only just being formed at the time. This paper is an effort to integrate selected aspects of Stanislavski’s system with contemporary psychological research. The paper focuses primarily on introducing the issues of memory together with the most important classifications thereof. It also develops the issue of ‘emotional memory’, which Stanislavski wrote about, in an attempt to interpret the category of memory created by the artist in the light of available terminology and psychological research.

    The aim of this study is to find out the possible effects of demographic characteristics of cabin crew on their emotional labor experiences. Emotional labor concept has been identified by Hochschild’s notorious research on Delta Airline’s cabin attendants and was published in her book “The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling” as the first time in the year 1983. In this study, 36 years after Hochschild’s work, the effects of demographic characteristics on the emotional labor experiences of 265 flight attendants who are working for airline companies in Turkey are investigated. In the literature, there are only a few studies on the effects of demographic factors on emotional labor experiences of cabin crew. So, this study provides an important insight into the subject. The emotional labor scale consists of three dimensions; deep acting, surface acting and genuine emotions. For the emotional labor, a total of 13 questions were answered by participants in 5-point Likert type scale through the Internet. Also, six questions related to demographic characteristics were answered. An Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed to verify the item distribution on each factor (i.e. deep acting, surface acting and genuine emotions). And, to analyze the differences between the emotional labor experiences of the groups according to age, gender, position, marital status, total working experience and education, independent samples t-tests and one-way ANOVA tests were applied. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare the differences of two groups such as married-single, male-female, flight attendant-flight attendant supervisor. One way ANOVA tests were used to compare the differences of three or more groups according to age, total working experience and education. Tukey HSD tests were performed after one way ANOVA tests to distinguish the statistically different groups. The results show that there are no statistically significant differences between the expressions of emotional labor, deep acting, surface acting and genuine emotions of groups according to gender, marital status, education and age. Yet, there are statistically significant differences between the emotional labor and surface acting experiences of flight attendants and flight attendant supervisors. Also, a statistically significant difference is found between the deep acting experiences of the cabin crew with 4–7 years of experience and those with 8–22 years of experience.

    Emotions are expressed not only with words but also with a gesture, body posture, miming or voice modulation. Actor reproduces on stage the external effects of emotions which the audience can read. In the 18th century, theatre and actor became the subject of theoretical reflection comprising two contrasting theories: either living or pretending the feelings of a character played. In Italy, the first theory prevailed, presented by Luigi Riccoboni in his treaties: Dell’arte rappresentativa (1728) and Pensées sur la déclamation (1738). The main objective of this article is to examine how the emotional acting was performed in practice in the 18th century Italian theatre. To this aim, two examples will be closely analysed which are very different in terms of style but not distant in time and what is more, intended for the same Venetian audience. For the purpose of analysis, two monologues were chosen which show an outbreak of anger leading in consequence to a revenge: Mirandolina’s first monologue from Carl Goldoni’s comedy titled La locandiera (1753) and Tartaglia’s first monologue from a scenic fable by Carlo Gozzi titled Il re cervo (1762). The analysis will focus on the power of word expressing emotions and performative traces buried in the text as well as indirect and direct reports of the contemporary audience which will approximately allow to reproduce the style of acting.

    Research shows that positive affective displays in customer service interactions are positively related to customers’ perception of overall service quality. Consequently, the way customer service employees manage their feelings is seen as an important aspect of providing their services. In most service contexts, employees are expected to express positive emotions, e.g., be cheerful and suppress negative emotions, such as resentment. Emotional labor is regarded as a type of impression management, because it involves deliberate effort undertaken by service workers in order to adhere to organizational display rules when dealing with customers. Surface acting is an emotional labor strategy and consists of managing observable emotional expression without modifying underlying genuine feelings (service with a fake smile). Research shows that surface acting is positively related to employee burnout. The present study (N=180) was designed to examine the effects of surface acting on emotional exhaustion while controlling for employees’ trait emotional intelligence. The results demonstrated that employees who declared greater use of surface acting during their interactions with customers reported more symptoms of emotional exhaustion. As predicted, however, this effect was observed only among employees low in trait emotional intelligence. The discussion encompasses the implications these results may have for managing emotional expression in public performance that may result in reducing performance anxiety.

    Wstęp Coraz częściej w różnych zawodach wymaga się od zatrudnionych wykonywania pracy emocjonalnej (PE), czyli okazywania emocji ustalonych przez procedury organizacyjne, przy równoczesnym maskowaniu prawdziwych uczuć, jeżeli mogłyby zostać negatywnie odebrane przez klienta. Pracownicy, wykonując pracę emocjonalną, sięgają po jedną z 2 strategii działania (płytką lub głęboką), co może prowadzić m.in. do wypalenia zawodowego. Ponieważ wykonywanie pracy emocjonalnej i jej konsekwencje zależą od obranej strategii działania oraz specyfiki pracy, założono, że konsekwencje PE mogą być odmienne dla pracowników wykonujących różne zawody. Materiał i metody Dokonano analizy porównawczej między pracą nauczycieli (N = 129) a osób zatrudnionych w sektorze usług komercyjnych (N = 136). Badania przeprowadzono, korzystając ze Skali Płytkiej i Głębokiej Pracy Emocjonalnej oraz polskiej wersji kwestionariusza OLBI (Oldenburg Burnout Inventory – Oldenburski Kwestionariusz Wypalenia Zawodowego). Wyniki Statystyczna weryfikacja hipotez wykazała, że badane grupy różnią się pod względem obieranego działania: pracownicy usług komercyjnych częściej podejmują pracę emocjonalną o charakterze płytkim niż nauczyciele. W przypadku nauczycieli negatywne konsekwencje w zakresie wypalenia zawodowego częściej dotyczą wyczerpania emocjonalnego niż zaangażowania, natomiast oba komponenty kształtują się na takim samym poziomie wśród pracowników sektora usług komercyjnych. W obu grupach płytkie działanie przyczynia się do wzrostu wypalenia, przy czym w grupie nauczycieli silniejszy związek występował między poziomem wypalenia a ukrywaniem emocji niż ich udawaniem. Wnioski Praca emocjonalna może być podłożem różnych negatywnych konsekwencji, m.in. wypalenia zawodowego, obniżonego zaangażowania czy chorób psychosomatycznych. W oparciu o tę wiedzę można tworzyć standardy organizacji dotyczące ekspresji emocji oraz działania profilaktyczne, takie jak umożliwienie identyfikacji z organizacją, co przeciwdziała negatywnym konsekwencjom wykonywania PE.     Background Nowadays more and more employees are required to perform emotional labor (EL) which means that they need to express emotions set by the organizational procedures, simultaneously masking the true feelings. Employees, while performing emotional labor, choose between one of the two strategies (surface acting or deep acting) and this leads to e.g., burnout. As the performance of emotional labor and its consequences depend on the specification of work and chosen strategy, it was assumed that the consequences of EL may be different for workers in various occupations. Material and Methods The authors performed a comparative analysis between teachers (N = 129) and professionals of commercial service sector (N = 136). In the analysis the Polish adaptation of deep acting and surface acting scale (DASAS) and the Polish version of OLBI (Oldenburg Burnout Inventory) were used. Results The statistical verification of hypotheses showed that employees of commercial service sector show a greater tendency toward choosing surface acting than teachers. Furthermore, in the group of teachers negative consequences are more related to emotional exhaustion, while both components of burnout are at the same level among employees of the other group. In both groups of respondents surface acting leads to the increase in burnout. Conclusions Emotional labor can lead to a variety of negative consequences, e.g., burnout or psychosomatic diseases. Based on this knowledge, organizations can develop standards for the expression of emotions and preventive actions, such as identification with organization, which can counteract the negative EL consequences.     Wstęp W artykule analizowano związek kryzysu wartości oraz strategii pracy emocjonalnej z wypaleniem zawodowym w grupie świeckich nauczycieli religii. Analizowano też rolę pracy emocjonalnej jako mediatora związku między kryzysem wartości a wypaleniem. W badaniach uwzględniono trzy strategie pracy emocjonalnej: pracę powierzchowną, głęboką i okazywanie emocji naturalnie odczuwanych. Materiał i metody Badaniami objęto 169 świeckich nauczycieli religii (24% – mężczyźni, 76% – kobiety). W badaniach zastosowano opracowany przez Olesia Kwestionariusz do Badania Kryzysu w Wartościowaniu, Kwestionariusz Wypalenia Zawodowego Maslach (Maslach Burnout Inventory) oraz Skalę Pracy Emocjonalnej (the Emotional Labor Scale) opracowaną przez Diefendorffa, Croyle i Gosserand. Wyniki Kryzys wartości jest istotnym czynnikiem wypalenia zawodowego w grupie świeckich nauczycieli religii. Praca powierzchowna i okazywanie emocji naturalnie odczuwanych mediują związek kryzysu w wartościowaniu z wyczerpaniem emocjonalnym, depersonalizacją, a także z poczuciem braku osiągnięć – praca powierzchowna zwiększa wypalenie zawodowe, natomiast redukuje je okazywanie emocji naturalnie odczuwanych. Nie potwierdzono związku pracy głębokiej z wypaleniem zawodowym. Wnioski Zasadne jest poszukiwanie czynników sprzyjających okazywaniu w pracy emocji naturalnie odczuwanych, a także tych redukujących pracę powierzchowną. Med. Pr. 2015;66(5):687–700
    Background This article presents an analysis of the relationship between the crisis of values and in the valuation, the strategy of emotional labor, and occupational burnout in the group of lay teachers of religion. In addition, the role of emotional labor as a mediator of the relationship between the crisis of values and burnout was analyzed. Three strategies of emotional labor were considered in the study: surface acting, deep acting, and expression of naturally felt emotions. Material and Methods The study was conducted in a group of 169 lay teachers of religion (males – 24%, females – 76%), using the Questionnaire for Investigating Crisis in Valuation developed by Oleś, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and the Emotional Labour Scale developed by Diefendorff, Croyle and Gosserand. Results The crisis of values and in the valuation is an important factor responsible for occupational burnout in the group of lay teachers of religion. Surface acting and expression of naturally felt emotions mediate the relationship between crisis in the valuation and emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment. Surface acting increases, while the expression of naturally felt emotions decreases occupational burnout. Deep acting is not related with occupational burnout. Conclusions It is justified to seek factors favoring the expression of naturally felt emotions, and also those reducing surface acting. Med Pr 2015;66(5):687–700

    Celem artykułu jest prezentacja zjawiska pracy emocjonalnej, na które jako pierwsza zwróciła uwagę Arlie Hochschild. Praca emocjonalna dotyczy obecnie wielu wykonywanych zawodów, szczególnie związanych ze świadczeniem usług i zwraca uwagę na to, że rola zawodowa wiąże się z normami i oczekiwaniami określającymi, jakie emocje i w jaki sposób pracownik powinien ujawniać podczas kontaktów interpersonalnych. W artykule zostały przedstawione różne ujęcia zjawiska pracy emocjonalnej (Arlie Hochschild i Alicji Grandey i innych), które są najbardziej użyteczne z perspektywy zarówno jego zrozumienia, jak i uwarunkowań oraz konsekwencji dla człowieka. Zgodnie z nimi praca emocjonalna jest definiowana jako proces regulowania emocji podczas pełnienia roli zawodowej, a jej konsekwencje związane są z przyjętą przez pracownika formą pracy emocjonalnej: płytką, która polega na zmianie zewnętrznej ekspresji emocji oraz głęboką, której istotą jest wewnętrzna głęboka zmiana odczuwanych przez jednostkę emocji. W artykule zostały zaprezentowane obie formy pracy emocjonalnej oraz wynikające z nich konsekwencje dla osób dorosłych.
    The aim of the article is to present the phenomenon of emotional labor, which was been first noted by Arlie Hochschild. The term refers to the phenomenon occurring in a number of contemporary professions, particularly service jobs and draws attention to the fact that one’s professional role is connected with norms and expectations defining what emotions employee should display in interpersonal re- lationships and how they should do it. The article presents different perspectives on the phenomenon of emotional labor (Arlie Hochschild, Alicia Grandey and others) that are the most useful to understand the concept, as well as its determinants and consequences for people. According to them emotional labor is defined as the pro- cess of regulating emotions in the performance of one’s professional role, and its consequences depend on the type of emotional labor the employee has assumed: sur- face acting, which is changing the outward expression of emotions and deep acting, which is based on the profound change of emotions felt by the individual. The article discusses both forms of emotional labor and the resulting consequences for adults.

    Wstęp Artykuł prezentuje wyniki prac nad polską wersją zrewidowanej Emotional Labour Scale (ELS), narzędzia do pomiaru pracy emocjonalnej opracowanego przez Lee i Brotheridge. Skala pozwala mierzyć pracę głęboką oraz 2 aspekty pracy płytkiej (ukrywanie uczuć i udawanie emocji). Materiał i metody Własności psychometryczne polskiej wersji, nazwanej Skalą Płytkiej i Głębokiej Pracy Emocjonalnej (SPGPE), poddano ocenie w badaniu wstępnym z udziałem 332 przedstawicieli różnych zawodów usługowych. Zweryfikowano strukturę czynnikową skali, jej rzetelność oraz trafność teoretyczną, analizując związki jej podskal z innymi miarami dotyczącymi funkcjonowania w środowisku pracy. Wyniki Uzyskane wyniki wskazały, że SPGPE charakteryzuje się dobrymi parametrami psychometrycznymi, porównywalnymi z wersją oryginalną. Zreplikowano 3-czynnikową strukturę narzędzia oraz potwierdzono jego zadowalającą zgodność wewnętrzną i trafność teoretyczną. Wnioski Wstępne analizy pozwalają uznać SPGPE za trafne i rzetelne narzędzie do pomiaru płytkiej i głębokiej pracy emocjonalnej. Med. Pr. 2015;66(3):359–371
    Background This article presents the results of the study on the Polish version of the revised Emotional Labor Scale (ELS), developed by Lee and Brotheridge. The ELS measures deep acting and 2 aspects of surface acting (hiding feelings and faking emotions). Material and Methods Psychometric characteristics of the Polish version of the ELS, named Deep Acting and Surface Acting Scale (DASAS), were analyzed in the preliminary study on 332 people working in various service professions. We verified factor structure of the scale, its reliability, and construct validity (that is, the relationships between its subscales and other measures of workplace functioning). Results The results indicated that the DASAS has good psychometric properties which are comparable with the characteristics of the original scale. We replicated a 3-factor structure of the scale and confirmed its satisfying internal consistency and construct validity. Conclusions The preliminary findings suggest that the DASAS is an adequate measure of deep and surface acting. Med Pr 2015;66(3):359–371

    The leading theme of the author’s considerations is the motif of death found in the biography of Stanislavski’s and its role in the process of rearing of the actor. In the text a range of acting exercises based on students’ emotional memory have been named. Students’ autobiographical memories and testimony of death bequeathed on the cards of world literature play a key role in acting tasks. In the final part of the article the author mentions the etude about death prepared by the students of the Acting Studio named after Aleksander Sewruk of the Stefan Jaracz State Theatre in Olsztyn.
