Corporate anniversaries are mostly used as a promotional event to increase the value of corporate identity of firms, business enterprises or their brands. They are also used to create investment trust or strengthen the relations between, employees and customers. What makes corporate anniversaries meaningful is the importance of their moral value of continuity. Signs that are designed to identify these moral values and indicate the anniversaries can be defined as “anniversary emblems.” The design and uniqueness of these emblems are important in the means of being remarkable and memorable. Thus creative and unique results can be achieved by converting the numbers of anniversaries into expressive signs. This article focuses on existing design approaches and examples of anniversary emblem designs.

The Death of Animals in the Baroque emblem The Baroque emblem in an allegorical form conveys certain ideas to the reader. Man of the Baroque era perceived the world as a book. All elements of the universe served as signs, and certain ideas were conveyed with their help. The Baroque emblem, being a combination of the signs in question, represented an allegorical image. Death, the death of animals in particular, could teach a person a moral lesson, that is why the death of animals is represented quite widely in the emblem books. Emblems often contain a certain precept or denunciation of a vice, but they can point to a role model. Deer, lion, phoenix are represented most often in the emblems depicting the death of animals.

The theme of this article is the evolution of the Polish national emblem. Without knowledge of the genesis and history of this national symbol, it is difficult to understand the value of education in terms of nationality and the sense of national unity. Appearance, shape, colour evolved due to the political centrifugation in the country, but always and invariably meant Poland as the home of those who lived in the country and emigrated.

Opis:
This article intends to trace the evolution of the Dutch songbooks and emblem books from the mid-16th century till the mid-17th century, with special emphasis on the period between 1600 and 1620, when a cross-over genre comprising both songs (or other lyrical genres) and emblems, made its appearance. If during the mid-to-late 16th century both the emblem genre and the songbook genre manifested itself within a separate, clearly distinct publishing tradition, then from the onset of the 17th century the northern Netherlands witnessed the emergence of a new type of publication: richly illustrated emblem books which contained songs and other types of lyrical poetry. In this article I first present a brief outline of the two genres (emblem books and vernacular songbooks), mentioning their main exponents, the functional features of the publications and the main aspects of their reception, until creation of a cross-over genre in Amsterdam around the year 1600. The innovative publishing concept of a dual songbook-emblem book pioneered by Amsterdam printers such as Dirck Pietersz Pers, was quickly adopted by other publishers, writers and editors. Books combining emblem imagery with songs became popular among young wealthy buyers among whom companionship went hand in hand with the enjoyment of various forms of oral literature. There were different functional approaches to the problem of combining emblemata with other genres, the most important of which are reviewed in this article. Some authors (e.g. Pieter Cornelisz Hooft) created a book comprising two symmetrical parts (emblems and songs or sonnets). Sometimes these parts were not symmetrical, but they nevertheless formed clearly distinct sections, for example in Roemer Visscher Sinnepoppen or Dirck Pietersz Pers Bellerophon. Other authors (e.g. Gerrit Hendrik van Breughel in Cupidos lusthof or Jan van der Veen in Zinne-beelden) placed the emblems at the beginning of each chapter of his book, where each of these chapters in itself comprised of a variety of lyrical genres, including songs. In this article the emblem genre is presented from the perspective of oral literature, pointing to the existence of a not yet entirely explored borderline area between emblems and song culture in the Northern Netherlands. Two examples of emblems from cross-over books of songs and emblemata analyzed in detail in this article are Gerrit Hendrik van Breughel emblem [18] from Cupidos lusthof (Den Pool,..), on standards of courtly behavior in the Commonwealth of Poland, and Jan van der Veen emblem [2] from Zinne-beelden (Trouwt vryicheyt aen vre…) which deals with questions of war and peace in relation to the identity of the Dutch Republic.

Opis:
The starting point in the article is an absence of studies which show the realizations of the military-erotic symbols in religious literature that is associated with the emblem tradition. The discussed works – prayer books by Andrzej Gabriel Kasperowicz; anonymous Atak Niebieskiej Twierdzy… [The attack of the Heavens… or The attack into Fortress of Heavens…] and Wojsko serdecznych afektów… [The army of heartfelt affections…] by Hieronim Falęcki – retain high formal and semantic discipline; as a result, they are examples of interesting phenomena of Baroque culture. In the first part of her article Iwona Słomak presents three prayer books in which the concept is based on analogy with the organization of the army of Christ. In the second part she shows the book in which the theme of war connects with the issue of „holy erotica”. In part three she discusses a print whose composition refers to the structure of the military detachments. It is conceived as a collection of „affections” whose task is „to conquer” heaven and the hearts of readers. Characteristically, the formula of the discussed books will be understandable only if we reconstruct their reference to the popular allegorical images (we find them in the collections of emblems, in many treatises on religious themes or in descriptions of the great ceremonies of that era); therefore, it is necessary to take into account the emblematic model that clearly influenced their final shape.

Opis:
Prudence, telescope and eschata. Around Emblem 96 by Zbigniew MorsztynThe paper is an attempt at analysis and interpretation of Emblem 96 by Zbigniew Morsztyn. The author presents the text against a broad comparative background and argues that the work is a particular study of the virtue of prudence, for which anticipating future (or more strictly speaking: last) things is a key issue. To date, the ninety-sixth emblem by Zbigniew Morsztyn, although relatively frequently studied by scholars of old-Polish literature, has not yet been comprehensively interpreted. Models of such analyses are provided in articles by Janusz Sławiński or Maria Renata Mayenowa on Emblem 102, complemented by the works of Janusz Pelc and the recent studies in the subject of emblems by Radosław Grześkowiak and Jakub Niedźwiedź. In the beginning, the author shortly outlines the history of the notion of the virtue of prudence in classical and biblical aretology as well as in Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Thaeologiae, which significantly influenced the definition of the virtue of prudence in Christianity. Later, in a detailed analysis of Morsztyn’s text the author tracks references to various elements of Prudence. It seems that (according to Morsztyn) the most important element of this virtue among those distinguished in aretology is providence, that is, the ability to anticipate future things, since this is what the posthumous fate of a man’s soul depends on. Morsztyn illustrated sensible providence using the metaphor of a telescope. This optical instrument, apparent in the iconographical schema of the original print as presented by Morsztyn, supports the cognitive abilities of man and allows him to discern future things that are crucial for his salvation, that is the last things, which he often forgets when carrying on his worldly matters. In order to show the uniqueness and originality of Morsztyn’s presentation of the subject, the author compares his works with emblem XIV from book I of Herman Hugon’s Pia desideria in the translation of Aleksander Teodor Lacki, the adaptation of Mikołaj Mieleszko and the English version of Hugon’s emblems by Francis Quarles. All these variants differ from each other in that they contain differently detailed deliberations on prudence and the last things, as well as in diverse application of the telescope metaphor. Thus Quarles shaped his emblem as a dialogue between Soul and Body in which Soul is trying to convince her interlocutor of the superiority of the telescope over the prism in the thoughtful cognition of the truth about eschata. Mieleszko, by contrast, built his emblem on the concept of a telescope that is turned over and so distances the eschatological vision. Lastly, in the subscription of Hugon-Lacki’s emblem there is no mention of the telescope whatsoever. Such comparative juxtaposition of Morsztyn’s emblem with other adaptations of the Belgian Jesuit’s work exposes not only the artistry of the synthetic presentation of the subject by the old-Polish poet, but also his aretological awareness.

The Theme of the Fountain-Wound in a Baroque Manuscript Meditation: The Impact of Iconography on PoetryBehind the foundation of the monastic meditation about fountains is a concrete devotional graphic from Western Europe. It is the Dutch emblem that is the key to the interpretation of the religious text, which uses words to directly refer to a specific image. These cultural correspondences constitute a curious phenomenon. They present the spirituality as well as the mentality of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European society. This seems to confirm, at the same time, the fact that no artistic activity is ever isolated. Motyw fontanny-ran w barokowej rękopiśmiennej medytacji: wpływ ikonografii na poezjęU początków monastycznej medytacji o fontannie stoi konkretna dewocyjna grafika z Zachodu Europy. To holenderski emblemat, będący kluczem do interpretacji tekstu religijnego, posługującego się słowami w celu bezpośredniego odwołania do owego obrazu. Te kulturowe korespondencje stanowią ciekawe zjawisko. Odsłaniają duchowość i mentalność siedemnasto- i osiemnastowiecznego społeczeństwa europejskiego. Równocześnie zdają się potwierdzać fakt, iż żadna aktywność artystyczna nigdy nie jest izolowana.

Opis:
Recently several books have been published which deal with the history of the families of the Chodkiewicz, the Lanckorońscys from Brzeź, the Sapiehas, the Branickis or the Radziwiłłs. Family trees occupy the main place in these publications since for the well-known Polish families they were developed in the past and passed on from a generation to generation. However, the genealogy of noble families is difficult to be restored due to numerous difficulties as the information is largely dispersed. The Walewskis family of the emblem Kolumna have their own family archives collected and filed between 1897 and 1940 by Kazimierz Walewski in Tubądzin and it provides the documentation for the family tree. In 17th and 18th centuries the Walewskis accounted for 163 men and 165 women representing several family branches: in Walewice, Rusiec, Dziebędów, Charłupia Wielka, Rembieszew, Pstrykonie the Cracow and Wołyń branches and Alexander Walewski’s, the Warrant Officer 1st Clas of Piotrków. Nearly all of them were based in the area of the former region of Sieradz, on the border region of Łęczyca and Rawa (Walewice) and in the region of Cracow and in Wołyń. The Walewskis were proud of having 36 local civil servants including two Governors (Voivodes) of Łęczyca and Sieradz and many local higher rank officials - Senators (these were the most numerous) mostly in the areas of Spicymierz, Rozprza, Brzeziny, Inowłódz or Sieradz. Within two centuries they frequently occupied other position as chamberlains (five times), Warrant Officers (thirteen times), High Stewards (six times) or the positions in local courts as High Sheriffs or country judges (three times). As far as the assets are concerned the Walewskis could not be found among magnates but the real estates they owned allowed them to be politically active and gain prestige in their local communities. When we analyse the family links of the Walewskis emblem Kolumna, they usually did not enter into relationships with famous families of the Republic of Poland, except some occasions like the Koniecpolskis, the Lanckorońskis and the Lubomirskis, but with the representatives of medium or lower class nobles who inhabited the region of Sieradz and its neighbourhood.
