Der Artikel bietet eine literarische Analyse des Gedichts von Bernard Wapowski: Panegyris seu carmen elegiacum in victoriam Sigismundi I regis de Moschis. Der Verfasser schrieb es aus dem Anlaß des Sieges der polnisch-litauischen Truppen in der Schlacht, die sich am 8. September 1514 bei Orsza ereignet hatte. Es hatte einen Propagandacharakter und erschien 1515 in Rom in einer dem Siege gewidmeten Gedichtsammlung. „Die Elegie von Orsza” ist die einzige Dichtung von Wapowski, trotzdem deckt sie einen großen literarischen Talent deren Autors auf. Wapowski stellt hier mit Hilfe der chronologisch erscheinenden Bilder eine (nähere und weitere) Zukunft dar, die nach der Siegesschlacht Polen und dem christlichen Europa bevorstehen sollte. Der Dichter sagt einen wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Triumph Polens im Osten (Krim, Kaffa, Griechenland, Byzanz und Palestina) voraus sowie die Annahme des Christentums durch die bisher heidnischen Völker. Ein solcher Erfolg ist nach Wapowskis Vorstellung auf den Sieg bei Orsza zurückzuführen. Diese nicht banale Dichtungskonzeption wurde im zierhaften Stil, reich an stilistischen und rhetorischen Mitteln übergeben. Die häufige Anführung der geographischen Namen und der Elemente der altertümlichen Geschichte verrät die Gelehrsamkeit des Verfassers. Aus diesen Gründen verdienen sowohl das Gedicht als auch die Person dessen Autors einer Erinnerung.

The article presents a penetrating analysis and interpretation of elegia uśpienia by Józef Czechowicz. Subsequent elements of the poem's construction are described in such a way that their double status is revealed: while creating an immanent structure they refer the reader to areas of culture that are often vast and satiated with a lot of meanings. One of the basic motifs of the sketch is pointing to a clear analogy between the 'dark' (and also - paradoxically - 'illuminative') tone of elegia... and the nature of poetical speech. At the same time the author constructs his reasoning in such a way that it can reveal the capabilities and limitations of measures taken by theorists of literature, and also become a reflection on the essence of 'reading'.

Jan Kochanowski’s amorous Foricoenia: Ovidian models The purpose of this article is to find Classical references in Jan Kochanowski’s amorous foricoenia, as yet not systematically studied. Scholars have focused on the meaning of the title Foricoenia (Szatyńska-Siemion) or on the ancient references (e.g. the presence of Terence in some epigrams or the translations from Greek, studied by Głombiowska), but have not studied the amorous epigrams as a whole. At the beginning the author indicates some topoi that are common to elegiac poetry (recusatio or the heroes treated like elegiac lovers). Firstly, the author shows that Kochanowski uses elegiac material and topoi in his epigrams, presenting to the reader a little epigrammatic Ars Amatoria, based on Ovid’s model. Secondly, he argues that even when Kochanowski translates epigrams from Greek, he chooses those that are more appropriate to his literary project, i.e. the “elegization” of the epigrams. Conclusions: Kochanowski “elegizes” his epigrams, first of all presenting a small Ars Amatoria, and then writing his texts according to the elegiac tradition, both in terms of topoi and textual imitations. After singling them out, I propose an interpretation of Kochanowski’s choices: I argue that he engages in a long-distance dialogue with Ovid’s Ars amatoria and more in general with the whole ancient amorous-elegiac tradition, which he sometimes denies. I bring forward a few examples, starting from a comparison between Kochanowski’s epigram XVI and Ovid’s Remedia Amoris 501–502 and Ars amatoria I 45–48 (i.e. the hunter caught in his own nets). Epigram V, In paellas venetas, introduces a special Ulys-ses, described as amorous, a lover rather than an epic hero, exactly as Ovid taught for this character. Furthermore, writing epigram LXIX to his friend Torquato, Kochanowski assures him he can make people fall ill with love, as well as cure his friend of such a “disease;” similarly, Ovid teaches how to make people fall in love (Ars amatoria) and how to recover from love (Remedia amoris).

The article addresses the topic of shmontses in Poland after 1945, focusing on historical and political circumstances that significantly influenced the perception of this performative and literary genre. Shmontses – a form extremely popular in the interwar cabaret – drew patterns from Jewish humour. As the relevant cultural context was gradually vanishing, the genre became less frequent on stage. Despite that the pre-war works by Konrad Tom, Ludwik Lawiński and Julian Tuwim were included in the repertoire of cabaret “Dudek”. A sketch referring to the Jewish themes appeared in the show of Television Theatre. It was entitled Cabaret Warietano, czyli XI Muza Juliana Tuwima (Cabaret Warietano, or 11th Muse of Julian Tuwim) and directed by Jerzy Dobrowolski. The author of the article also discusses the shmontses written by the young post-war writers – Wojciech Młynarski and Ryszard Marek (Ryszard Wierzbowski and Marek Groński).

This dissertation shows synthetically the Young Poland elegy together with a proposal, due to properties of aesthetics and subject matter of the typology of the genre in this epoch: 1. elegies of the mood connected with the poetics of symbolism, which instead of a personal confession, contain picturesque equivalents of "the condition of soul", 2. autobiographical elegies, among them elegies of memories, 3. stylised elegies, consciously formed according to old genre models. What has been emphasised is the importance of the genre and its unbroken continuity between the 19th and 20th centuries. The most important role was played by the autobiographical elegy in which Leśmian achieved mastery, which aimed from the personal confession to psychological and epistemological discoveries. Staff's role is important as he practised all three kinds of elegy. The wide-ranging phenomenon of elegiacness, occurring also in prose, has been signalled.
