Opis:
The study presents an analysis of teachers’ tendency to label gifted pupils. A questionnaire was used at the level of lower secondary education. It was aimed at teachers’ educational strategies in the area of enriching the curriculum for gifted pupils, and teachers’ tendency to label gifted pupils. In conclusion, labeling does not belong to educational strategies of most teachers. Gender, pedagogical qualifications and the length of teaching experience do not influence teachers’ tendency to label gifted pupils. Teachers from specialized schools for gifted pupils have a stronger tendency to label them. This tendency is weaker in the case of teachers from small schools.

The aim of the article is to present the problem of the education of gifted children in European education systems and to describe the phenomenon of home tutoring in England, particularly the method of home schooling, which in the last decade has gained more and more supporters. The first part of the article shows how to define a gifted child in selected European education systems and presents the main forms of education and support for children and gifted youth. For the description I used data collected by Eurydice – European Information Network on Educational Systems. The second part of the article describes the phenomenon of home tutoring in England as a specific form of home schooling. Tutoring is also the practice of a traditional master-student relationship, so characteristic for English universities since their inception in the Middle Ages. Homeschooling became popular in the English education system in the 1970’s when the first household educators association was founded in England – Education Otherwise. English homeschooling involving tutors, paid for by the parents, has been steadily evolving in the last decade. This form of children education is more often being chosen not only by the intellectual elite, or English aristocratic families, but above all by extremely wealthy parents who see home tutoring as their chance to develop the skills and abilities of their children and a chance for to change their social status in the future. For the children of wealthy parents, who themselves have not completed reputable schools, home tutoring is a possibility to catch up, to acquire knowledge and skills, so that they can start studying at the best universities in the country or abroad.

The paper makes reference to the concept of identity which constitutes the result of the interaction of four parameters comprising the model of the Imperial Tetragon of Embodiment (ITE) by Puppel (2009, 2011). With reference to the above theoretical framework, this contribution makes an attempt to describe the status of the ITE parameters in relation to the communicative behaviours of a Polish high school intellectually gifted student with regard to his functioning in an educational institution (which will enable one to establish the identity of the aforementioned learner). Notably, it is postulated that the potential of intellectually gifted students should be given due consideration in the process of forming higher education curricula.

Opis:
The introduction of remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic has changed the way of working with gifted students. The article presents the results of a survey conducted among parents of gifted students aged 10–15 years. The parents filled out an electronic questionnaire containing both open- and closed-ended questions. Data were collected on 1,477 gifted children. The aim of the research is to diagnose the opportunities, possibilities, and limitations of the development of gifted students aged 10–15 (grades 4–8, secondary education) under the distance learning during the pandemic. The subject of the study is an analysis of selected elements of educating gifted students during the pandemic. The results indicate that 36.8% of students had comfortable conditions for remote learning (their own computer and room and a good Internet connection). The students’ involvement in learning and independence were differentiated by their ability. The girls were significantly more involved than the boys and were statistically significantly more independent. The students’ involvement correlated positively with their independence. The main themes of the parents’ statements regarding the possibilities and advantages of remote education were saving time, developing and strengthening academic competences, developing existing or acquiring new skills, maintaining children’s safety and using IT tools during online learning. The students mainly developed their interests and abilities on their own, often with the support of the family, using the media or referring to online resources. No systemic support for gifted students was indicated.

The aim of the article is to present the results of the study on early primary school teacher’s preparation for working with gifted pupils. The study was conducted among 697 primary school teachers teaching in grades I, II, and III in Cracow and nearby towns. The theoretical aim of the article is to demonstrate, on the basis of the subject literature, the most important predispositions these teachers should possess. The author's own study has revealed that teachers are not adequately prepared to provide effective and engaging education for gifted pupils at an early school age. In the last part of the article the author indicates solutions aimed at improving this situation, e.g. enriching the offer of university study programmes for teachers in the area of education of gifted students; creating a position of a "teacher of gifted students"; creating separate centres supporting educational development of gifted students; and extending cooperation between all educational units.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to identify the type of support that teachers provide to gifted students in grades 4–6 of primary schools in Poland in relation to their concepts of giftedness. Teachers’ understanding of the category of gifted students was analyzed: What do they find crucial in identifying gifted students? What areas of gifted students’ development are most important to them? Are there differences in the strategies for supporting gifted students between teachers who have different concepts of giftedness and who teach different subjects? The research was conducted on a group of 188 teachers using the standardized 20-item Balanced Development of Gifted Students Questionnaire. It helped identify the scope of the teachers’ activities in the cognitive, emotional/social, motivational, and creative spheres. It was shown that the dominant concept of giftedness among the surveyed teachers was cognitive and that their activities supporting gifted students were mainly aimed at mental development and knowledge acquisition. Support of the emotional/social sphere of gifted students was least frequently indicated by the respondents. There was consistency between the type of support provided and the teacher’s preferred concept of giftedness. There were significant differences in the definition of giftedness and the related type of support between teachers of different subjects. The subject which they taught also significantly differentiated the number of students identified as gifted: The most gifted students were identified by the art teachers, while the least were identified by the math teachers. The results may serve as guidelines for developing teachers’ competencies in working with gifted students by popularizing the concept of balanced development and making them aware of the links between beliefs about giftedness and the type of support provided.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to describe and clarify the relationships that are found between families of talented children and schools, institutions, and other organizations engaged in the development of children’s potential. The developmental concepts of talents prevalent in the current discourse emphasize their dynamic and interactive nature, meaning that the development of children’s abilities is processual and proceeds in the course of intricate, time-dependent interactions between internal and external factors. A significant role is played by the influence from close social circles. From this viewpoint, positive relationships between the family and school or other social environments may help children’s capabilities to flourish. The article draws on data originating from individual, in-depth interviews conducted with 18 families raising children with special academic, artistic, or athletic talents. The analysis identified three types of relationships between families and schools, institutions, and other organizations supporting the development of gifted children: cooperation, conflict, and natural development of a child’s talent. However, there were evident differences depending on the type of talent shown by the child, the stage in the education system they were in, and the specific profile of the school, educational institution, or organization conducting a given type of education. Armed with knowledge on the relationships between family and school and other social environments, it is possible to both understand and mold them in accordance with the expectations of all parties and the needs of the gifted child.

XIX wieku.
The paper is devoted to the discussion of the tasks related to finding the geometric locus of points. These tasks were included in the article Beiträage fäar den Unterricht in der Geometrie (“Contribution to the teaching of geometry”) by Otto Reichel (Thorn, 1866), a teacher of Torun gymnasium in the 1860s. The solution of most of these tasks went beyond the curricula determined by the then educational authorities. It is an example of self-extension of the mathematics curriculum by a teacher in a school for gifted students in order to better prepare young people for matriculation examinations, university studies, and later professional careers.

Opis:
The paper will develop the following issues: (1) One of the basic controversies about the mechanism of ability formation, expressed by the question "nature or nurture?" posed by F. Galton in 1869, has been resolved by compromise. Empirical studies show that the impact of both factors is fairly equal. However, this does not mean that only 50% of a student's abilities are defined by pedagogical interactions. For while no one questions the possibility of modifying the influence of environmental factors with the intention of stimulating certain directions of human development, quite a few people doubt the possibility of effectively influencing some parameters of life and health in the case of genetic predisposition. (2) Among both parents and teachers there is a belief in the dominant influence of genetic factors on the direction and strength of a student's abilities, which is reflected in commonly made statements such as "he was born this way," "he's good at math, it runs in the family," or "he has no aptitude for science," or "he inherited musical ability from his mother." (3) Environmental influences on gifted students mainly focus on supporting the development of special talents, overlooking the all-important issue of the style of educational interactions. (4) The postulated vector for working with gifted pupils is the formation of their individuality capable of resisting all kinds of social pressures. In this understanding, man is born as a genetically equipped organism but his development, growth and maturation are significantly modified by the processes of socialisation and upbringing. The article concludes with the author's proposal of the main directions of work with students aimed at stimulating the development of their abilities.

In the article the authors discuss the practical implementation of the model work with a plastically gifted child “Science – Art – Education”, founded at the end of 2013. As a result of implementation of the international research project. The resulting model, from the theoretical point of view, has been described in the scientific monograph edited by J. Aksman: Science – Art – Education. Innovative model of diagnosis, methods and forms of work and care for plastically gifted children. This model shows the importance of science in early school education through art, based on the innovative combination of art education and health education of children in grades 1–3 of primary school. The consequence of this combination is the intention of the authors of the project to shape life skills of the mentioned children. Theoretically reasoned innovative model Science – Art – Education (SAE) was extremely important but the initial stage of the work. Another one, which has now been adopted and which is described in the article – is associated with a wider than before application of this innovative model – with an attempt of its implementation in everyday practice of art lessons with pupils in early school age. This task involves a further, currently implemented on a research project The effectiveness of the model of work with a plastically gifted child “Science – Art – Education” in the three-year cycle of lessons (WPiNH/DS/5/2015) directed by J. Aksman. The attempts to further applications of the Innovative Model into daily teaching practice and forms of its popularization are very important and they are described in this article: – the creation by J. Aksman and J. The study aimed to investigate the attitudes of preschool teachers towards gifted children. A sample of 70 Slovenian preschool teachers was included in the study. The data was collected using a quantitative data collection technique and a questionnaire as a measurement tool. The results showed that preschool teachers believe gifted children’s characteristics are most easily recognised in the preschool years, especially in the second age group (3-6 years). Most respondents (82.9%) believe it is easier to recognise giftedness in children in the general intellectual domain. Most preschool teachers consider pedagogical differentiation and individualisation important when working with gifted preschool children. More than half of the respondents (57.1%) answered that they do not use tools for discovering gifted children, and the majority of them believe that they do not know the early signs of giftedness. In conclusion, gifted children should be identified in early childhood so that their development and potential can be adequately nurtured.

Wyniki badań ilościowych, prowadzonych wystandaryzowanymi testami diagnostycznymi ukazującymi takie umiejętności jak relacje interpersonalne dzieci, podejmowanie decyzji, radzenie sobie z sytuacją trudną i kierowanie stresem oraz interesujące nas w tym artykule budowanie samoświadomości, zostały opublikowane w monografii Kształtowanie umiejętności życiowych uczniów klas początkowych w toku innowacyjnych warsztatów plastycznych Nauka – Sztuka – Edukacja na przykładzie badań eksperymentalnych. W artykule dokonano porównania wyników badań ilościowych, dotyczących umiejętności do budowania samoświadomości u dzieci, z nieopisywanymi jeszcze wynikami badań pochodzących z technik jakościowych (obserwacja nauczycielska i wnioski nauczycieli z badań jakościowych oraz autorski test projekcyjny skierowany do dzieci: Moje mocne i słabe strony).
This article presents an excerpt from a large three-year study conducted using the pedagogical experiment method and concerning the development of life skills of children at an early school age, including gifted children, through the implementation of an innovative art education program „Science – Art – Education”. The results of quantitative research, conducted with standardized diagnostic tests showing such skills as – children’s interpersonal relationships, decision-making, coping with difficult situations and stress management, and building self-awareness, which we are interested in this article – were published in the form of a monograph Shaping life skills of primary school pupils in the course of innovative art workshops Science – Art – Education on the example of experimental research. In the presented text, compared the results of quantitative research on the skills to build self-awareness in children with the yet undescribed results of research from qualitative techniques (teacher observation and teachers’ conclusions from qualitative research and an original projective test addressed to children: My strengths and weaknesses). Quantitative research shows a long process of shaping self-awareness and a breakdown of the results of this variable after the second grade. Qualitative research confirms the length of time needed to develop self-awareness, and especially positive self-esteem, in children, but they show the systematic development of this difficult skill in children at this age. In the post-pandemic period and the difficult time of insecurity caused by war conflicts, shaping positive self-esteem becomes an important issue in the education of children in the first stage of education due to their mental health. Thus, the „Science – Art – Education” project is one of the ready-made tools (art education programs) for shaping this skill.

Opis:
Uzyskany materiał badawczy poddano analizie i interpretacji. Wykorzystano Model Różnicujący Zdolności i Talent Françoys Gagnégo.
The abilities of children and the school conditions detrimental to their development, as observed by parents, are one of the important motivations behind the decision to homeschool children. In this model of education, the parents are responsible for making it possible for the child to develop according to their capabilities. The aim of this article is to describe the engagement of parents in developing their children’s abilities in home education. Research was performed in the qualitative tradition, using the narrative interview method. The resulting research material was subjected to analysis and interpretation. The Differentiating Model of Giftedness and Talent by Françoys Gagné was used as an inspiration. The conducted research allowed to describe and interpret parents’ activity in developing children’s abilities – to categorize and describe their actions, the types of ability they identify and help develop, and to present reflections which accompany parents while realizing those tasks. It can be concluded that homeschooling parents concentrate on creating the appropriate conditions for their children to develop abilities, and on equipping them with corresponding skills and competences.

Opis:
This article is devoted to the issue of special educational needs in the context of working with a gifted learner, with particular linguistic abilities. Satisfying the needs of such children and providing them with opportunities for integral development of linguistic competence demands a different educational approach – similar to the situation when working with students with some limitations in their learning processes. The approach taken reflects the concepts and definitions of abilities presented in this article. The analysis of those elements suggests ways of identifying gifted learners and, as the next step, also offers certain educational solutions which can easily be applied in teaching. One such way can be preparing children and teenagers for international language certificates in German – Fit in Deutsch 1 and 2 as a form of extra-curricular activities. These certificates are at the A1/A2 level of language skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). As they are aimed at young people aged 10–16, it is possible to include primary school students in preparation for them, which in turn allows the learners to develop language skills and linguistic interests at the second stage of education. This article serves as a general overview and should not be taken as an empirical research.
