    Opis:
    On the example of works on ’’The Catalogue of Cracow’s Historic Monuments”, describing a few hundred monuments of architecture and several thousand works of painting, sculpture and artistic craftmanship, the au thors present problems of the cataloguing of monuments in big town complexes. Assuming th a t the cataloguing is to cover structures put up before World War II Cracow has now several thousand buildings of historic interest th a t represent different periods. The idea to catalogue monuments arose in Cracow already in the 18th century (first publications appeared about 1900). More comprehensive studies were undertaken only after 1945 and were included into the works on ’’The Catalogue of Arct Monuments in Poland”, prepared by the Institute of the Polish Art attached to the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 1973 a special institution for works on the cataloguing was established, namely the Team (at present th e Workshop) for th e Cataloguing of Historic Monuments of the Town of Cracow, headed by Jan Jamek and emploing 5 permanent workers and about 20 co-workers. Their task is to carry out field works according to the ir specialization, e.g. miniature codices in libraries are prepared by a rt historians engaged in this problem. The cataloguing of Cracow’s historic monuments has been done in nearly 70 per cent. The works carried out so fa r have brought a number of discoveries — out of 1,000 photographs published in one p a rt of ’’The Catalogue” almost 800 represent the works th a t have not been known before. A fu rth e r efficient p rogress of the works depends on the training of a sufficient number of specialists, i.e. a rt historians who would recognize and date various objects from different epochs according to the instructions on cataloguing. It is expected th a t works on the cataloguing of Cracow’s historic monuments should be completed in 15-years time, while editorial works will last about 20 years. The whole of ’’The Catalogue of Cracow’s Monuments” ’will consist of 12 parts (altogether 40 books) containing 3,000 pages of the te x t and 12—15 thousand photographs. It will be an important material for a rt historians, architects conservators, and what is most important, it will offer a full possibility to undertake works on thematic catalogues (e.g. of gold works, already being prepared). A vast number of treatises and articles arising as the effect of the works on cataloques prompts the establishment of a specific department for studies on the art of C ra cow biassed in favour of the works on the a rt of the microregion.

    History of pilgrimages from Kraków to Jasna GóraDescriptions of worshippers headed from Kraków to the Shrine of Jasna Góra in the city of Częstochowa have been discovered in archives dating back to the 14th century. The early beginnings of this traditions can be linked with religious and political considerations as well as the close proximity of Częstochowa to Kraków. The tradition of pilgrimages to Jasna Góra has been maintained over the centuries despite the loss of independence by Poland as a whole. The anti-Catholic work of Poland’s post-1945 government also did not stem the flow of pilgrims from Kraków to Jasna Góra. The contemporary pilgrimage movement has its roots in the 1970s when a number of new pilgrim organizations came into existence. These included the Cistercian Foot Pilgrimage ( 1972 ), which became the 4 th part of the Kraków Foot Pilgrimage in 1998. The latter had begun in 1981. Another pilgrimage is the Dominican Foot Pilgrimage, which became an independent pilgrimage in 1992 – separate from the Archdiocesan Pilgrimage. The smallest  pilgrimage from Kraków is the Skałka Foot Pilgrimage, which has been active since 1976 and is led by the Pauline Fathers. The pastoral work and pilgrimage activity of John Paul II has also had a strong effect on each of the three pilgrimage movements from Kraków.

    Joanna Kostecka devoted her monograph to the institutions of municipal administration – Krakow’s Boni Ordinis Commissions, conducting its activities in Krakow area in the second half of the 18th century. The Author has undertaken a difficult task of describing themulti – subjected areas: the issues connected with the town administration, numerous issues from the frontier between the history of the law and the system, the history of the economy, historical demographics and many others historical studies. Information was presented in the work largely based on source material and in a factual, comprehensive methodological and highly erudite way. However, there are some factual and methodological errors in the book, including: the lack of source literature from the last decade, inaccuracy related to extreme work dates and chronology, the omission of the judiciary of the Commission in urban matters.

    Antoni Morbitzer as the President of the Krakow Municipal Council (1812–1815)The article is devoted to the activity of Antoni Morbitzer (1757–1824), a Krakow merchant, economic and political activist and president of the Krakow Municipal Council in the years 1812–1815, that is the final years of the existence of the Warsaw Duchy. Contrary to the letter of the existing law, while standing at the helm of the Municipal Council, Morbitzer, managed to transform this rather superfi cial institution into an authentic organ of municipal authority which co-governed the city of Krakow. Despite a diffi cult political and economic situation (Napoleon’s war with Russia in 1812, the two-year occupation of Krakow by the Russian army in the years 1813–1815), he tried to realize an investment program in the city (charting out new roads, paving the streets, laying down sewage pipes, demolishing derelict buildings); he supported Krakow’s activity as a trading center and opposed the city’s excessive supplies for the Polish and then the Russian armies which according to him ruined the city budget. Thanks to his own industriousness and cooperation with the city mayor and department prefect, as well as his ability to impose his own point of view on the Municipal Council, he contributed to a relatively effi cient functioning of the city and to continuing modernization work in this difficult period. Due to the different political system, (which operated in the city at the time of the Austrian rule and in the period of the Free City of Krakow), he was the only president of Krakow municipal self-government in the first half of the 19th c.
