Barley scald, caused by Rhynchosporium commune is one of the most prevalent diseases in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) worldwide. The primary loss from scald is reduced yield, which can exceed 25% in dry areas. In our earlier studies, we developed a low-resolution linkage map for recombinant inbred lines of the cross Tadmor/WI2291. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for scald were localized on chromosomes 2H and 3H flanked by Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers HVM54 and Bmac0093b on 2H and HVLTPP8, HVM62 and Bmag0006 on 3H. These chromosome 3H markers were found to be located close to the Rrs1 − R. commune resistance gene(s) on chromosome 3H. In this study, 10 homozygous resistant and 10 homozygous susceptible plants each from the F7 population of Tadmor/ Sel160, a panel of 23 barley varieties used routinely in the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) breeding program and three populations were used for scald resistance screening using 25 DNA markers that are located very close to scald resistance gene(s) on barley chromosomes. Only five of those markers clearly discriminated co-dominantly between resistant and susceptible plants. These markers, Ebmac0871- SSR, HVS3-SCAR, Bmag0006-SSR, reside on different arms of barley chromosome 3H. Ebmac871 is localized on the short arm of 3H and HVS3 and Bmag0006 are localized on the long arm of 3H. This result indicates that the scald resistance genes which they tag are probably close to the centromeric region of this chromosome. Scald resistance from several sources map to the proximal region of the long arm of chromosome 3H, forming the complex Rrs1 locus. The availability of highly polymorphic markers for the discrimination of breeding material would be extremely useful for barley breeders to select for the trait at the DNA level rather than relying on phenotypic expression and infection reaction.

Dryland areas are regarded as highly sensitive to climatic changes. A positive relationship between rainfall and environmental factors is often assumed for areas with an average annual rainfall of 100–300 mm. This assumption disregards the fact that a climate change in arid areas is not limited to climatic factors. It is often accompanied by a pronounced spatial variability in surface characteristics. The present work deals with the complex relationships among average annual rainfall, surface properties and the spatial redistribution of water resources in sandy areas located in the Northern Negev Desert. Two case studies are considered. The first deals with the hydrological effects of biological topsoil crusts on the water regime, along a rainfall gradient (86–170 mm). This study is based on five monitoring sites. Data obtained show a decrease in water availability with increasing annual rainfall. The findings are attributed to the decisive role played by the non-uniform properties of the topsoil crust along the rainfall gradient. The second case refers to the non-uniform development, and survival, of planted trees. Trees planted on steep dunes are well developed, with a high survival rate, whereas trees planted on low angle dunes are small. This study focused on the role of a water repellent layer on the water regime. Data obtained show a striking difference between steep and low dunes in all aspects studied, namely the degree of water repellency, frequency and magnitude of runoff events, infiltration depth and soil moisture. All variables monitored were found higher on steep than on low dunes. The large trees shed a substantial amount of leaves, whose decay developed a water repellent layer. Runoff generation over the repellent layer enhanced deep water penetration, through the process of subsurface flow. The lack of a water repellent layer over the low dunes prevented runoff generation, with its positive effects.

Region Islamu jest obejmuje większość istniejących na Ziemi obszarów suchych i półsuchych. Z tego względu woda stanowi tam surowiec deficytowy, posiadający znaczenie strategiczne. Niejednokrotnie w przeszłości i obecnie działania mające na celu zabezpieczenie odpowiednich ilości wody do celów gospodarczych i komunalnych prowadziło do konfliktów lokalnych jak i międzypaństwowych. W artykule wyjaśniono sposoby pozyskiwania wody stosowane na tym obszarze w przeszłości jak i współcześnie, zwłaszcza w krajach doświadczających eksplozji demograficznej i dużej dynamiki gospodarczej. Szczególny nacisk położono na geopolityczne znaczenie zasobów wody oraz możliwość zastosowania nowoczesnych technologii w jej pozyskiwaniu, co w uprzywilejowanej sytuacji stawia państwa dysponujące środkami finansowymi.
The Islamic region includes most of the arid and semi-arid areas existing on Earth. For this reason, water is a deficit resource there, with strategic importance. Often, in the past and now, activities aimed at securing the right amount of water for economic and communal purposes led to local and interstate conflicts. The article explains the methods of obtaining water used in this area in the past as well as today, especially in countries experiencing demographic explosion and high economic dynamics. Particular emphasis was placed on the uneven distribution of desalination installations and the geopolitical importance of water resources as well as the possibility of using modern technologies in its acquisition, which in a privileged position puts countries with financial resources at their disposal.

The research was conducted in a young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) plantation located in a dune area of the Toruń Basin (N Poland). The aim of the study was to investigate differences in dynamics of soil water conditions followed different method used for site preparation. The three plots were investigated in the study: belt of soil prepared by a mill, north−facing slope of a dune (FR−N), belt of soil prepared with a mill, south−facing slope of a dune (FR−S) and soil prepared with a plough (furrows) on the ridge of a small aeolian mound (LPZ). On each plot soil samples were taken and soil moisture was regularly measured from April to December of 2013 (the TDR method). The measurements of soil moisture were taken at four depths (3, 10, 25 and 50 cm) at intervals of ca. 2 weeks. Additionally, soil moisture was also measured on 25.08.2015. It was done to determine soil water conditions for a deep summer drought (the measurements were taken twice this day – just before and after rain which turned to be the first since ca. a month). Reserves of soil moisture and shares of water unavailable to plants were calculated for every measure day for each study plot. As a result of higher organic carbon content, values of soil actual moisture as well as reserves of soil moisture were almost regularly higher for belts mixed with a mill than for furrows prepared with a plough (fig. 1, 3). Opposite relation was found, however for the summer drought (tab. 2). This was explained by the higher repellence of rich in organic mater, dried material occurring in belts. On 25.08.2015 much lower improvement of water conditions after rain was also stated for this material than for topsoil in LPZ. Unfavoured soil water conditions for plants occurring in belts in dry periods could explain relatively low dynamics of pine growth revealed for the variant of soil preparation in a previous study. However, it was concluded that a forest mill should be recommended for forestry, because the device much less disturbs topsoil than a plough. Besides, differences in growth parameters of pines followed different methods of soil preparation used before planting decline in next years of a stand growth.

The objective of the study was to determine the dynamics of soil temperature on inland dunes in the Toruń Basin (N Poland) with reference to the two methods of site preparation: homogenization of belts with a forest mill (FR) and preparation of trenches with a double−mouldboard plough LPZ−75 (LPZ). The study was conducted in a young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) plantation on plots with soil prepared by a forest mill on north− and south−facing slopes of a dune (FR−N and FR−S respectively) and with soil prepared with a plough on the ridge of a small aeolian mound (LPZ). On each plot a soil pit was dug and soil samples were taken from distinguished horizons for laboratory analyses. Besides, from April to December of 2013, at interval of ca. two weeks, soil temperature was measured at the depths of 3, 10, 25 and 50 cm. To estimate daily amplitudes of temperature in topsoil on the studied plots, in a sunny summer day (23.08.2013) the temperature was additionally measured from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an hourly interval. These measurements were taken at the two upper depths (3 and 10 cm). Despite the fact that soil surface was distinctly darker for belts prepared with a mill than in trenches prepared by a plough, soil temperatures were almost regularly lower in FR−N and in FR−S than in LPZ. This concerns all the investigated depths. The differences were explained by much higher moisture of soil material in belts what involves higher thermal capacity and with that slower heat of a soil, as well as causes higher losses of thermal energy for evaporation. Another agent explaining this was indicated to be related to high porosity of materials found in the belts. Namely, especially in dry periods, high volume of soil pores are filled on the FR plots with air what impedes heat transfer in a soil. It was concluded that stated in a previous study worse growth of pines planted in milled belts than in tranches prepared with a plough was unlikely related to differences in soil thermal conditions. Thus, differences in growth dynamics of young pines in plots with site prepared by the two studied methods are caused by other reasons rather as primarily other competitive impact of weeds and differences in soil water conditions occurring at root system of young trees.

At present, stormwater management is one of the key issues in urban policy. This is due to the increasing urbanisation, climate change, the growing threat of extreme (weather) events and the need to protect water resources. Legislation plays an essential role in the process of project planning and implementation. The recognition of opportunities and barriers contained in these regulations forms the basis for action by the central government, local authorities and investors. The article aims to analyse legal provisions, administrative decisions and factual circumstances that provide the foundation of administrative court rulings in Poland and regard the legal possibilities of rainwater management in urban areas. The adopted research method allows for/includes the author’s interpretation and formulation of de lege ferenda conclusions. The results of analyses of both European and national legislation and case law indicate that there is a problem with the interpretation of existing legislation and the lack of legal definitions of basic equipment and solutions in the field of water law, for instance. Such legal circumstances make it difficult to make the required legal decisions, and have a negative impact on the timing of implementation and number of these much-needed projects.

W szczególności przedstawiono problematykę hydrologicznych podstaw projektowania w oparciu o dane meteorologiczne w zlewniach niekontrolowanych posterunkami wodowskazowymi ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dostępnych narzędzi komputerowego wspomagania modelowania procesów hydrologicznych (HEC-Hms, HEC-Ras) oraz dostępnych do wykorzystania modeli matematycznych i statystycznych opad-odpływ, tu praktyczne zastosowanie metody SCS-CN oraz modelu liniowego kaskady zbiorników Nasha do transformacji opadu efektywnego w odpływ powierzchniowy.
The paper presents the problem of designing an open reservoirs with a capacity of about 100 000. m3 in heavily urbanized areas of anthropogenically transformed natural watercourses with numerous outlets drainage and large sealed surfaces runoff. In particular the issues of the hydrological basics design based on the meteorological data in the catchment uncontrolled water level checkpoints with particular emphasis on the tools of computer-aided modeling of hydrological processes (HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS) and available for use mathematical models and statistical rainfall-runoff, this practical the method SCS-CN and linear model cascade tanks Nash to transform the effective precipitation in surface runoff.

Przedmiotem badań była infrastruktura przeładunkowa na styku sieci kolejowych o rozstawie torów 1435 mm i 1520 mm. Celem pracy było zbadanie potencjału rejonów przeładunkowych. Zakres przestrzenny pracy objął kraje europejskie, gdzie stykały się badane systemy kolejowe. Szczegółowo przeanalizowano infrastrukturę na terenie krajów należących do Unii Europejskiej. Dokonano inwentaryzacji na podstawie informacji publikowanych przez operatorów terminali przeładunkowych, materiałów kartograficznych i badań terenowych. Zidentyfikowano łącznie 40 rejonów przeładunkowych (w tym 23 w krajach UE), w których funkcjonowały różnego rodzaju terminale. Najlepiej rozwinięte były rejony: Małaszewicze, Przemyśl i LHS w Polsce, Czerna na Słowacji i Zahony na Węgrzech. W obrębie części rejonów przeładunkowych znajdowały się duże miasta, takie jak Jassy i Galati w Rumunii, Koszyce na Słowacji, Kowno na Litwie oraz konurbacja górnośląska w Polsce – do której dochodziła linia LHS. Wykorzystanie badanej infrastruktury uzależnione było od wielkości wymiany handlowej oraz uwarunkowań geopolitycznych. Pomimo funkcjonowania systemów zmiany wózków i rozstawu kół wagonów większość ładunków była przeładowywana.
The subject of research was the reloading infrastructure at the interface railway gauge 1435 mm and 1520 mm. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential of transhipment areas. The spatial scope of work included European countries, where the studied rail systems meet. The infrastructure in the EU countries was analysed in detail. Inventory was made based on information published by the operators of terminals, cartographic materials and field studies. This allowed for the identification of a total of 40 handling districts (including 23 in the EU), in which different types of terminals function. The most developed regions were: Małaszewicze, Przemyśl and LHS in Poland, Cierna in Slovakia and Zahony in Hungary. Some parts of the handling areas included large cities such as Iasi and Galati in Romania, Kosice in Slovakia, Kaunas in Lithuania, and the conurbation of Upper Silesia in Poland, which was reached by the LHS line. The use of studied infrastructure was dependent on the size of trade and on geopolitical factors. Despite the need for changing wagons and track of wheels, most of the cargo was reloaded.
