    The article centres upon the phenomenon of mimetic desire which, as Rene Girard observes, is responsible for generating violence in the cultural and social sphere. In Girard’s view, William Shakespeare saw and documented the correlation between mimesis and violence, which makes his dramatic œuvre an essentially important text of culture. And A Midsummer Night’s Dream in particular is granted special attention; Girard clearly suggests that it should be an obligatory reading for all modern anthropologists. The article concerns an analysis of Girard’s revelatory reading of the play. It appears that the mimetic process is the thematic and constructional axis of dramatic events; furthermore, it is manifested in numerous transfigurations ultimately leading to violence and myth-creative hallucination. By creating the horizon of interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the mimetic theory reveals also a demystifying power of the comedy. At the same time, it open a new perspective of the meta-theatrical level analysis of Shakespeare’s play.

    В статье анализируется процесс художественного перевода и научного изучения современной белорусской драматургии в Польше. Автор статьи отмечает возросший интерес польских исследователей и переводчиков к пьесам современных белорусских драматургов. Связано это с успехами белорусской драматургии за рубежом и с развитием славистики в Польше, появлением новой генераци исследователей и переводчиков. Польские исследователи отмечают, что в результате процессов русификаци в Беларуси большинство молодых авторов пишет на русском языке, а на родном языке пишут представители среднего и старшего поколения. Большинство польских переводчиков и исследователей (Андрей Москвин, Агнешка-Любомира Петровская, Каролина Невядомская, Якуб Адамович и др.) обращают свое внимание именно на рускоязычную драматургию Беларуси, но благодаря усилиям Беаты Сивек, Малгожаты Бухалик, Агнешки Гораль польский читатель имеет возможность познакомиться и с творчеством белорусскоязычных авторов.
    The article analyzes the process of literary translation and the scientific study of Modern Belarusian playwriting in Poland of nowadays. The author notes the growing interest of Polish researchers and translators to the modern plays of the Belarusian writers. This fact is due to the success of Belarusian Drama Art abroad as well as with the development of Slavic studies in Poland, the advent of a new generation of researchers and translators. Polish researchers have noted that as a result of the Russification process in Belarus, the majority of young authors writes in Russian, however middle and older generations of the play writers prefer to use their native language. Most Polish translators and researchers (Andrei Moskvin, Agnieszka-Lubomira Petrovskaya, Carolina Niewiadomska et al.) are concentrated on Russian language drama in Belarus, but thanks to the efforts of Beata Siwek, Malgorzata Buhalik, Agnieszka Goral Polish readers have the opportunity to get acquainted with the works of Belarusian authors.
    Artykuł podejmuje analizę procesu przekładu literackiego i badań naukowych poświęconych współczesnemu dramatowi białoruskiemu w Polsce. Autor artykułu dostrzega wzmożone zainteresowanie polskich badaczy i tłumaczy sztukami współczesnych dramatopisarzy białoruskich. Jest to związane z sukcesami białoruskiej dramaturgii za granicą oraz z rozwojem slawistyki w Polsce, pojawieniem się nowej generacji badaczy i tłumaczy. Polscy badacze zauważają, że w wyniku procesu rusyfikacji na Białorusi większość młodych autorów pisze w języku rosyjskim, natomiast do ojczystego języka zwracają się przedstawiciele średniego i starszego pokolenia. Większość polskich tłumaczy i badaczy (Andriej Moskwin, Agnieszka Lubomira Piotrowska, Karolina Niewiadomska, Jakub Adamowicz i in.) koncentruje swoją uwagę właśnie na rosyjskojęzycznej dramaturgii Białorusi, ale dzięki staraniom Beaty Siwek, Małgorzaty Buchalik, Agnieszki Goral polski odbiorca ma możliwość zaznajomienia się także z twórczością autorów białoruskojęzycznych.

    The article is an attempt to reconsider, reinterpret and, at the same time, summarize the concepts of dramaturgy and dramatology as they were developed by the author mainly in his research realized within the framework of the Chair of Drama and then the Chair of Performance Studies at the Jagiellonian University. Despite the fact that efforts to establish a broad understanding of drama and dramaturgy that is not restricted to art but is used to analyse and interpret performative aspects of social life were not fully successful, the main goal of the article is to support this idea by claiming the need for a ‘return to dramatology’.

    The article opens with a statement that dramaturgical creativity, long marginalized by literary studies, has returned to the area of its interest together with its researchers’ use of the achievements of performative and cultural turns. Taking these into account allows us to treat drama as a distinctive literary practice in which the reception of a text is exemplary. As the author claims, with the New Humanities, integrating scattered reading perspectives known to the history of literary studies into the horizons of New Positivity, dramatic studies enrich this standpoint and maintain a critical view making creative use of the antagonism of perspectives, confrontation of attitudes, conflict of qualities or different visions and ideas. The potential tensions revealed in the practice of active reading of a literary text in accordance with the dramatic matrix guarantee the positive effects of each act of engaged reading. The dramatization of tradition is a specific field of critical dialogue between the reader and the existing literary tradition. Three dramatic works by Jan Czapliński are indicated as examples of mediators for this dialogue. The work of this playwright presents and suggests a critical reading of the characters and works of Gabriela Zapolska, Henryk Sienkiewicz and Adam Mickiewicz, leading to the emancipation of their works that is situated beyond the framework of the discursively created, existing canon of contemporary Polish literature and culture. A critical view enriches and updates the canon. Dramatization, which allows the revaluation of existing values, appears as the basic category of contemporary art – revealing existing, usually ineffable conflicts and using them to build new, positive values.

    This article is an empirical exploratory investigation into the problem of „old radio genres” reception by contemporary listeners. The paper focuses particularly on the radio drama, very popular in the Golden Age of Radio and now on the verge of disappearing. The transformation of media environment, due to the media convergence process, has enormous impact on the changes in the mass media hierarchy. This issue has inspired a survey conducted among journalism students asking them about their listening behaviours and radio programmes preferences. The main purpose of this research was to assess whether radio dramas sill can be attractive to contemporary radio listeners. The results of the survey not only help to determine the place of radio – until recently the only transmitter of artistic radio programmes – in the media, but also assess the degree of contemporary listeners’ attachment to audio theatre plays.

    This essay takes up a core question of this issue of Pamiętnik Teatralny: how are we to think about historiography beyond a dualism, settled in time and reflective of the status quo? With respect to the California missions, historical treatments of colonization revolve around a dualism shaped by moral dimensions of the missionary enterprise—did the missions help California Indians or harm them? Theatrical representations, like the wildly successful early twentieth century pageant drama, The Mission Play, staged a version of mission history that argued for the former. As a representation of the mission past, the play conflated missions, as institutions, with the moral character of missionaries, thus edifying a fantasy and entrenching the dualism. However, attention to missionary practices, like keeping time using the mission bell, reveal how the missions were sites where indigenous and colonial realities were in constant conflict. Through practices, relations between missionaries and indios produced a space that was neither strictly colonial nor indigenous, and yet both—a borderland. As a mode of spatial dialectics, borderlands thinking can unsettle the duality underlying representations of the mission past to question how that dualism has come into being.
    Artykuł podejmuje kluczowe pytanie tego zeszytu „Pamiętnika Teatralnego”: jak mamy myśleć o historiografii, jeśli chcemy przekroczyć dualizm, wynikający z osadzania wydarzeń w czasie i odzwierciedlania status quo. W odniesieniu do misji kalifornijskich historyczne ujęcia kolonizacji oscylują wokół binarnego myślenia o moralnym wymiarze tych przedsięwzięć: czy misje pomogły kalifornijskim Indianom, czy też im zaszkodziły. Przedstawienia teatralne, na przykład cieszące się wielkim powodzeniem na początku XX wieku misterium The Mission Play, przedstawiały taką wersję historii misji, która dowodziła słuszności pierwszej interpretacji. Jako reprezentacja dziejów misyjnej działalności sztuka wiązała instytucję misji z moralnością misjonarzy, konstruując w ten sposób fantazję i utrwalając dualistyczną perspektywę. Jednak analiza praktyk misyjnych, takich jak odmierzanie czasu za pomocą dzwonu, ujawnia, że misje były miejscem ciągłego konfliktu między tubylczą a kolonialną rzeczywistością. W praktyce relacje między misjonarzami i autochtonami wytworzyły przestrzeń, która nie była ani ściśle kolonialna, ani rdzenna, choć miała po trosze z obu jako przestrzeń pograniczna. Refleksja nad pograniczem, jako kategorią dialektyki przestrzennej, może podważyć dualizm leżący u podstaw reprezentacji dziejów misji, a zarazem unaocznić, w jaki sposób ten dualizm powstał.

    The article attempts to present essentiality – one of the concepts used most frequently by Witkacy – as a performative category. The artist was aware that essentiality would not have the final form in the dictionary of intellectual concepts, that it could not be fixed within stable definitions, but continued his efforts to push the boundaries of the human mind as far as possible. The paper analyses Witkacy’s epistemological tactics using Anna Krajewska’s dramatic theory of literature, which draws, among other things, on the achievements of performative discourse. Seen in this perspective, Witkacy’s ‘essential conversations’ can be regarded as dramatic forms which establish essentiality in constant motion and give it the character of a processual event – of something uncertain in a state of unreadiness, something attempted.

    Andrzej Wirth, a 20th century Polish essayist, philosopher and theatre critic, is one of the often forgotten theatre and drama scholars in Poland, perhaps due to his long life in exile. A recognized expert in theatre studies and philosophy, he has lectured at many universities around the world, especially in the United States and Europe. He gained particular recognition as the founder and director of the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen in Germany. The aim of this article is to introduce Wirth’s personality, outline his life between cultures and highlight his importance for the development of theatre studies in Germany, as well as his great contribution to the promotion of Polish literature in Germany in the mid-20th century. Andrzej Wirth’s life was beyond borders and divisions, although with a particular attachment to the culture of his homeland and Germany; he was rooted in childhood memories and a desire for theatre as a liberated art in an age of evolving media technologies.

    A memoir about Professor Irena Sławińska (1913-2004), a scholar of drama and theater affiliated with the Catholic University of Lublin for several decades. The author presents Sławińska's curriculum vitae and briefly outlines the academic and artistic experiences that shaped her in Vilnius (until 1945), Toruń (1945–1949), Warsaw (1949–1950), and Lublin (1950–2004). She lists the scholar's numerous areas of dramatological and theatrical research, the functions she held in Polish and foreign academic societies and institutions, and discusses her cooperation with foreign universities. She also comments on Sławińska's translating and artistic activities. She describes a profile of the school of theater studies created by the scholar in Lublin and enumerates her students who developed the currents of research she initiated or carried out artistic and publishing activities.

Cilj rada je da se ukaže da su odabrani nastavni sadržaji dobra osnova za kreiranje nastavnog predmeta Dramska kultura čija je potreba utvrđena u strateškim dokumentima obrazovanja.
    The paper provides the description of the teaching of drama aspects in primary schools in Serbia and the assessment of the approach to studying drama and theatre aspects in the current curriculum. In addition, the paper highlights and explains the particularities and advantages of the dramatic approach to education as well as in extracurricular activities, i.e. activities pertaining to theatre clubs in schools. The paper aims to demonstrate that the selected educational contents are a good foundation for the creation of the subject – Theatre Studies. The need for the subject was determined in the strategic documents on education.

    Process drama or educational drama, the use of dramatic approaches in literacy class, is not a classroom performance or a skit. For Heathcote and Herbert (1985), Carroll (1986), O’Neill and Lambert (1982), Warner (2013) and Taylor (2006), or Edmiston (2013), it has become the tool to explore social issues, history, or science lessons that have “less emphasis on story and character development and more on problem-solving and living through a particular moment in time” (Wagner, 1999, p.5). Studies on classroom talks during dramatic interactions, unfortunately, are limited. After a systemic online search, three studies are selected for further analysis: Harden (2015), Epstein (2004), and Kao, et al. (2011). These three existing studies explore the discourses in educational drama settings from various contexts, participants, and texts. The three studies are examined for their positions in the extant literature, methodology, and contributions to the field. The examination reveals the predominant perspectives, methodologies, dramatic strategies, and issues frequently discussed within the field.

    The article provides a brief comparative study of the reception history of Shakespeare’s Caliban in the early modern period and in the contemporary literary criticism. The analysis aims to delineate a fundamental difference in the reception of the character of Caliban throughout the ages which I attribute to a historical shift in the understanding of the notions of humanity and monstrosity. The first part of the article concentrates on the description of the historical and social circumstances of the Elizabethan discourse of monstrosity and draws a link between them and the literary and political context of the time, while engaging into a close reading of The Tempest that brings to the fore the origin and nature of the “servant-monster”. The second part of the paper focuses on the gradual change in the interpretations of Caliban who ceased to be seen as a monstrosity and with time acquired undeniably human characteristics. That shift has been observable since the 19th century and has found its culmination in the postcolonial strain of Caliban’s contemporary interpretations, in which Prospero’s slave becomes a native trying to find a language for himself in a colonial regime his body and mind are subjugated to. The postcolonial project of the unfinished monstrous humanity of Sycorax’s son is congruous with the postmodern condition that can be dubbed, to use Harold Bloom’s phrase, “the Age of Caliban”. It is exactly that liminal and paradoxical notion of monstrous humanity that resides at the core of the contemporary fascination with “Monsieur Monster”.

    Nowadays the growing interest in the work of Nikolai Evreinov, especially in the idea of the theatralization of life, provokes the question: Was Evreinov really ahead of his time, as Erika Fischer-Lichte suggests? What do his ideas mean today, in the era of performance studies? The article discusses Evreinov's most important concepts – such as the theatralization of life (on the example of human sex life, among others), monodrama, theater for oneself – as well as his works on the origins of theater which he saw in the scapegoat rituals, folk rituals, and public executions. Evreinov's ideas are juxtaposed with his work as a director (as the co-creator of the Ancient Theater in St. Petersburg, and the director of the mass spectacle The Storming of the Winter Palace) and with his dramatic works (on the example of the following dramas: The Beautiful Despot, In the Stage-Wings of the Soul [also known as: Theatre of the Soul], the parody The Inspector General [also known as: The Government Inspector] and The Chief Thing).

    This article concerns Russian modern drama, exactly the work of one of its most world famous representatives – Ivan Vyrypaev, 37-year-old actor, theatre and film director and playwright. The drama July by Ivan Vyrypaev is seen in relation to the ritual practices, which are a part of the myth of death and rebirth. Based on contemporary studies of ritual and mythological theory in literature the author identifies in the text of drama a kind of special ‘mifomir’– a structure with its sacred space and time, with the liminal stage of existence of a priest, who is at the same time a victim of a ritual sacrifice in the name of the renewal of life and restoring the cosmos out of chaos. This way of reading contemporary drama reveals her attempt to indicate the relations of the modern man with the eternal values and reflects an attempt to determine the identity and the limits of human being.
