Opis:
The leaching parameters for the recovery of platinum group metals were investigated with potentiostatic measurements using wire electrodes. The dissolution rates of Pt, Pd and Rh were measured in concentrated NaCl solution. The parameters inspected were the temperature, redox potential and chloride content. Measurements were done at temperatures 25–94 °C using four different NaCl concentrations, 62.5–250 g/l. Measurements were done at potentials of 950–1250 mV vs. SCE for Pt and Rh and 380–470 mV vs. SCE for Pd. Although higher temperature, potential and chloride content generally increased the dissolution rate, the effect was found to be nonlinear and slightly different for different metals. Based on the results, strongly oxidizing conditions are needed for the leaching process in order to achieve reasonable dissolution rates.

Opis:
Conditions were optimized for the first plant-scale dissolution of an aluminum-containing nuclear material without using mercury as a catalyst. This nuclear material was a homogeneous mixture of plutonium oxide and aluminum metal that had been compounded for use as the core matrix in Mark 42 nuclear fuel. B ecause this material had later failed plutonium distribution specifications, it was rejected for use in the fabrication of Mark 42 fuel tubes, and was stored at the Savannah River Site (SRS) awaiting disposition. This powder-like material was composed of a mixture of ~80% aluminum and 11% plutonium. Historically, aluminum-clad spent nuclear fuels have been dissolved using a mercuric nitrate catalyst in a nitric acid (HNO3) solution to facilitate the dissolution of the bulk aluminum cladding. Developmental work at SRS indicated that the plutonium oxide/aluminum compounded matrix could be dissolved using boric acid-hydrofluoric acid-nitric acid as a substitute for mercury. Various mercury-free conditions were studied to evaluate the rate of dissolution of the Mark 42 compact material and to assess the corrosion rate to the stainless steel dissolver. The elimination of mercury from the dissolution process fit with waste minimization and industrial hygiene goals to reduce the use of mercury in the United States. The mercury-free dissolution technology was optimized for Mark 42 compact material in laboratory-scale tests, and successfully implemented at the plant.

Hemimorphite has a large content of zinc, but its recovery using flotation alone is low. Nowadays, hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods are used to treat zinc ores. In this work, the leaching and dissolution kinetics of hemimorphite by using methane sulfonic acid (MSA) as an alternative leaching reagent was investigated. The effects of several experimental parameters including reaction temperature, MSA concentration, particle size, and stirring speed were also analyzed. Results showed that zinc leaching increased with increased reaction temperature, MSA concentration, and stirring speed, as well as decreased particle size. The mechanism of hemimorphite dissolution in MSA solutions may be a new variant of the shrinking-core model. Based on experimental data and kinetics, the apparent activation energy was determined to be 49.50 kJ/mol. The rate of reaction equation was also obtained to describe the process and found that the MSA concentration largely influenced the leaching of hemimorphite.

Opis:
Dissolution kinetics of digenite (Cu9S5) was studied in Fe3+-H2SO4-NaCl media. The temperature range for the study was between 297 and 373 K (24 and 100°C), with a ferric concentration between 0.0100 and 0.0806 mol/dm3, a sulfuric acid concentration of 0.05 to 1.5 mol/dm3 and a NaCl concentration of 1.5 to 5 mol/dm3. Agitation speed and particle size were also studied. Results indicate that the dissolution mechanisms of digenite occurs in two stages: i) generation of covellite (CuS) with the formation of cupric ion (Cu2+) and ii) dissolution of covellite (CuS) with copper production in the system, as well as amorphous sulfur (S°). The second stage occurred very slowly compared to the first stage, the above variables studied directly affected the second stage. Temperature, Fe3+ and H2SO4 concentration positively affected dissolution of covellite formed (second stage), while the presence of NaCl did not increase dissolution of Cu9S5 or CuS. Results showed that stirring speed had an important role in the dissolution rate of CuS. Dissolution kinetics was analyzed using the model of diffusion through the porous layer. Covellite dissolution reaction order was 2.3 and 0.2 with respect to the concentration of ferric and sulfuric acid, respectively, and the rate was inversely proportional to particle size. The calculated activation energy was 36.1 kJ/mol, which is a typical value for a reaction controlled by diffusion in the porous layer at temperature between 297 and 373 K (24 and 100°C).

Opis:
Part of the Oxfordian carbonate buildups in the southern part of the Kraków Upland is developed as pseudonodular limestones, which represent segment reefs. These limestones are composed of connected, rounded-oval to subangular carbonate pseudonodules. The pseudonodules, densely packed within the limestone, fall out easily under mechanical stress. The recently observed texture of pseudonodular limestones resulted from two stages of chemical compaction. During the first stage, in the Late Jurassic, high-amplitude and low-amplitude stylolites and dissolution seams were formed. The sites particularly favourable for the development of high-amplitude stylolites were the boundaries between already lithified fragments of the laminar, rigid microbial-sponge framework. The low-amplitude stylolites formed mainly in the intercalated wackestone-packstone, which was lithified somewhat later; hence, the dissolution seams originated at the contacts between the rigid microbial-sponge framework and the wackestonepackstone. After Early Cretaceous erosion, which decreased the burial load, Late Cretaceous sedimentation enabled the renewal of pressure dissolution. Thus, some low-amplitude stylolites evolved into dissolution seams. In stylolites composed of both low- and high-amplitude segments, dissolution proceeded at the bases of interpenetrating high-amplitude stylolite columns, with the simultaneous transformation of low-amplitude stylolite segments into dissolution seams. These seams, which formed at the initial stage of chemical compaction, were subjected in turn to further pressure dissolution, giving rise to the formation of horsetail structures. The vertical stress field, which triggered the pressure dissolution processes, presumably resulted in the formation of high-angle and vertical incipient tension gashes. At the beginning of the processes, these gashes remained closed. In the Cenozoic, under the extensional regime generated by overthrusting Carpathian flysch nappes, some high-angle and vertical dissolution seams and low-amplitude stylolites opened up, forming deformed dissolution seams and deformed stylolites. Under the same conditions, the high-angle and vertical tension gashes opened up as well. Subsequently, during the exposure period, unloading fractures developed, partly as a result of the opening of some subhorizontal and horizontal dissolution seams and stylolites. The unloading fractures, along with the already existing vertical and high-angle tension gashes, formed the network changing the limestone into pseudonodules of various shapes and sizes. The open spaces between the limestone fragments became local conduits for karst waters.

Electrochemical oxidation of ethanol becomes an important process of modern electrochemistry, due to its potential application into direct ethanol fuel cell technology. As rates of ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) are significantly enhanced in alkaline media, employment of highly corrosion resistant under alkaline conditions, but non-noble metals becomes of superior practical importance. This communication article reports on the process of anodic dissolution of platinum, which is investigated on Pt activated, electrooxidized nickel foam electrodes, employed for ethanol oxidation reaction in 0.1 M sodium hydroxide solution. The above was revealed through the application of cyclic voltammetry and combined SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray) spectroscopy examinations.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of chitosan on the dissolution of fenofibrate incorporated into this polymer carrier. The study investigated fenofibrate in physical mixtures at the drug to polymer ratio of 1:9, 3:7, and 5:5. The solubility investigation was performed by means of a dynamic method in a dissolution apparatus; mean amount of dissolved fenofibrate and the drug to polymer quantitative ratio in which the solid dispersion possessed the most beneficial properties improving the drug solubility were calculated. The study revealed a multi-fold increase (from 13 to 70 times) in fenofibrate solubility in the presence of chitosan, which increased with duration of the study and with increasing percentage of the polymer in formulations. The dissolution rates of fenofibrate in the presence of chitosan at the weight ratio 1:9 increased with the increment of the molecular weight of the chitosan. The obtained results may help develop new technologies for fenofibrate preparations with chitosan, with better solubility characteristics, and thus increased bioavailability of the drug.

In 1536 the English Parliament under pressure from Henry VIII and the Lord Chancellor, Thomas Cromwell, gave its consent for the dissolution of the lesser monasteries and abbeys in the king’s realm, and three years later with the sanction of MPs some of the greater religious houses also suffered the same fate. The principal aim of this paper is to assess the importance of this political decision with a view to examining the progress being made in the field of education in England in the middle of the sixteenth century resultant upon this dissolution. The evaluation of the merits and demerits originating from the suppression of the English monasteries is made in terms of both primary and academic education. The answers to these key questions are preceded by a short analysis of the reputation monasteries and abbeys had acquired by that time. Also on a selective basis, some opinions have been presented here to provide an overall picture of the standing of the monks and nuns and their concomitant activities, as perceived through the eyes of English society; the eminent scholars and humanists in particular. Subsequently, before assessing the consequences resulting from the dissolution of the religious houses in England, some consideration is given to the reasoning and rationale which lay behind both Henry VIII and his Lord Chancellor’s political decisions.

Clay is widely used in a number of industries due to its special properties like fine particle size, brightness and whiteness, chemical inertness, platy structure, etc. In this study, the general characteristics of clays have been investigated by XRF, XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTA and SEM. The presence of iron as an impurity decreases its commercial value due to giving unwanted colors to clay mineral. Therefore, the dissolution capacity of clay ore was investigated by oxalic acid leaching. Under optimized leaching conditions (0.8 M oxalic acid concentration, 85°C reaction temperature, 1.75 ambient pH, 106+75 µm particle size, 15% w/v solids concentration and 150 min. leaching time) with 250 rpm stirring, 83.90% of $Fe_2O_3$ was removed. The amount of iron oxide, the main impurity in the clay, has been reduced from 2.70 to 0.40%. The iron dissolution kinetics was mainly controlled by internal diffusion control of shrinking core model and activation energy, $E_a$, of 26.29 kJ/mol was obtained for the process. The results also showed that the studied clays have adequate characteristics for ceramics industry, earthenware and porcelain production.

Ethylene diamine phosphate (EDP), as a synthetic organic reagent, was used for the first time to leach malachite, and a new method of using organic amine to leach copper oxide ore was developed. The effects of stirring speed, particle size, reagent concentration, and reaction temperature on EDP-dissolution malachite were investigated. Results showed that malachite rapidly dissolved in EDP solution. The malachite-dissolving rate also increased with increased reagent concentration, increased reaction temperature, and decreased particle size. Stirring speed exhibited nearly no effect on EDP-induced malachite dissolution. The leaching kinetics was found to follow the shrinking-core model, and dissolution was controlled by surface chemical reaction with an activation energy of 52.63kJ×mol−1. A semiempirical rate equation was obtained to describe the dissolution process expressed as 1-(1-XCu)1/3=0.0149(CEDP)0.7814 × (Pmalachite)−0.7982×exp(−6.3308/T) ×t.

Opis:
Metal supported auto catalysts, have been used in sports and racing cars initially, but nowadays their application systematically increases. In Metal Substrate (supported) Converters (MSC), catalytic functions are performed by the Platinum Group Metals (PGM): Pt, Pd, Rh, similarly to the catalysts on ceramic carriers. The contents of these metals make that spent catalytic converters are valuable source of precious metals. All over the world there are many methods for the metals recovery from the ceramic carriers, however, the issue of platinum recovery from metal supported catalysts has not been studied sufficiently yet. The paper presents preliminary results of dissolution of spent automotive catalyst on a metal carrier by means of acids: H2SO4, HCl, HNO3, H3PO4. The main assumption of the research was the dissolution of base metals (Fe, Cr, Al) from metallic carrier of catalyst, avoiding dissolution of PGMs. Dissolution was the most effective when concentrated hydrochloric acid, and 2M sulfuric acid (VI) was used. It was observed that the dust, remaining after leaching, contained platinum in the level of 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively.

BCS class II includes drugs with low solubility and high permeability. Ketoprofen is an example of this class of drugs. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of chitosan with average molecular weights in various formulations on the dissolution of ketoprofen incorporated into this polymer carrier. The study investigated ketoprofen in solid dispersions using a method of the solvent evaporations at the drug to polymer ratios of 1:9. 3:7, and 5:5. The highest dissolution of fenofibrate, amounting to 98.8%, was observed after 60 minutes from solid dispersions with a drug-polymer weight ratio 1:9 in the presence of chitosan B and was 32-times higher in relation to the amount of added polymer in comparison to the solubility of pure drug. DSC and IR investigations showed that ketoprofen remained in its crystalline state in solid dispersion. There was no change in the chemical structure of the drug after the incorporation of the drug onto the polymer. Chitosan has been proposed as a useful excipient for enhancing the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble compounds.

In the mid-19th century, the Basilian monastery in Lublin was one of the five monasteries of this type in the Kingdom of Poland. Its dissolution was ordered by the governor Teodor Berg on 10 December, 1864, and carried out on 30 January, 1865. The monastic property was repossessed and taken over by the Treasury of the Kingdom of Poland. The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord thus became a parish church, and the former monastery superior became its temporary administrator on the post of a vicar. The monastery buildings were to be used as the rector’s apartment and a Uniate elementary school. Following the liquidation of the Uniate Church in the Kingdom of Poland in 1875, the parish was joined to the Orthodox Church.

On the basis of research, the mechanisms of dissolution and erosion during brazing of aluminium alloys and the influence of these phenomena on brazed joints of heat exchangers are presented. A number of factors have been identified that affect the formation of these phenomena during brazing aluminium alloys, these include : the maximum temperature and holding time at brazing temperature, and the type and amount of filler metal. The research was supported by examples of dissolution and erosion phenomena during series production of aluminium heat exchangers using three brazing profiles (normal, hot and very hot). It has been found that the dissolution of the engine radiator components during brazing, is from 18 to 68%, depending on the brazing profile used. For a very hot profile, erosion in part of the brazed exchanger, even destroys (removes) thin elements of the cooling fins.
