The primary goal of pattern recognition is supervised or unsupcrvised classification in order to solve decision - making problems. Medical diagnosis brings about many practical problems, which may be interpreted as pattern recognition tasks. Making diagnosis of a given patient means to solve a classification problem - we must recognize patient’s disease on the basis on some symptoms. The aim of the article is to present the results of using selected pattern recognition algorithms to classify patients with Coronary Artery Disease undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG).

Opis:
W niniejszej pracy zaproponowano sposób stworzenia nowego syntaktyczno - semantycznego opisu znaczeniowego przestrzennych struktur naczyń wieńcowych serca. Dzięki takiemu opisowi możliwe jest dokonywanie merytorycznie ukierunkowanej interpretacji znaczeniowej morfologii poszczególnych odcinków tętnic wieńcowych, co pozwala na szybką oraz automatyczną identyfikację istotnych miejsc przewężeń ich światła. W tym celu wykorzystane zostały grafowe języki obrazowe, oparte na gramatykach ekspansywnych typu edNLC. Gramatyki takie umożliwiają stworzenie uniwersalnego i informatywnego opisu znaczeniowego przestrzennych struktur naczyń wieńcowych. Wykorzystanie takich opisów semantycznych w zintegrowanych modułach inteligentnych systemów diagnostyki medycznej umożliwia wspomaganie zadań wczesnego wykrywania patologicznych przewężeń tętnic utrudniających przepływ utlenowanej krwi do danego obszaru mięśnia sercowego.
In this paper has been proposed developing the new syntactic - semantic meaning description of spatial coronary arteries structure. Thanks such description will be possible to make essentially steered semantic interpretation of section coronary arteries morphology, what will allow us fast identification and automatisation of lumen structure detection. In this aim has been used graph image languages based on the expansive graph grammars of edNLC type, enabling creation the universal and informative meaning description of spatial coronary arteries structure. Application of such semantic description in the integrated modules of intelligent systems medical diagonosis, supporting the early detection stricture which defect the flow of oxidizing blood to given area of cardiac muscle.

Opis:
The paper presents a new technique for cognitive analysis and recognition of pathological wrist bone lesions. This method uses AI techniques and mathematical linguistics allowing us to automatically evaluate the structure of the said bones, based on palm radiological images. Possibilities of computer interpretation of selected images, based on the methodology of automatic medical image understanding, as introduced by the authors, were created owing to the introduction of an original relational description of individual palm bones. This description was built with the use of graph linguistic formalisms already applied in artificial intelligence. The research described in this paper demonstrates that for the needs of palm bone diagnostics, specialist linguistic tools such as expansive graph grammars and EDT-label graphs are particularly well suited. Defining a graph image language adjusted to the specific features of the scientific problem described here permitted a semantic description of correct palm bone structures. It also enabled the interpretation of images showing some in-born lesions, such as additional bones or acquired lesions such as their incorrect junctions resulting from injuries and synostoses.

The authors have examined 31 children from the nursery, out of which 8 children were positive, and 16 employees, out of which 3 persons were positive. They also wanted to examine the family members of positive children and positive employees, however the offer was accepted only by one cleaner´s family (infected with Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis and Entamoeba coli). All the 8 members of this large family except of a cleaner (member of the family 1 = fm 1) and her grandson (fm 4) were without clinical and laboratory findings. They have formed 3 independent families living in 1st category flats. At that time a sewage disposal breakdown took place at the ground floor flat owned by the family number 2, and the flat was flooded by the sewage. All adult members of the families as well as the members of the family number 4 being the friends of family number 2 worked on flat cleaning. As the clinical symptoms showed later, during the prepatent period and just after its burning out (within 73–78 days), laboratory findings in members of the families proved that this event resulted in a heavy family infection equal to a family epidemic of intestinal parasites. The species Ascaris lumbricoides was diagnosed in 8 members (61.5%) of involved families and Giardia intestinalis in 7 members (53.85%). The species Enterobius vermicularis was found in 2 and Etamoeba coli in 1 member of the involved families. The family epidemic proved several times more frequent incidence of Ascaris lumbricoides and Giardia intestinalis than sporadic findings in children and adults. The fact that, after long years of low prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides such a mass infection has happened can be treated as a surprise. And the same concerns Giardia intestinalis. The authors discussed the incidence of Ascaris lumbricoides and Giardia intestinalis and preventive measures taken against them in the population.

Opis:
The study was based on many experiments of gait characteristics analysis, finally on observations of 117 patients suffering from motor disturbances. Among them were 42 cases with hemiparetic syndrome, mostly after cerebral stroke, 52 cases affected by acute sciatic neuralgia and 23 patients with recognition of Parkinson - disease symptoms. The control group was 16 healthy adults selected from medical staff - examined by pedobarographic equipment - PSW [4]. Based on these observations several classification proposals have been introduced. The majority of works concern gait disturbances investigations for three remarkable neurological diseases. They provide us with new diagnostic techniques based on some gait measures implementation.

The objective of the study was the preliminary recognition of whole body mechanical vibration risk among farmers in the rural work environment. The study covered 15 farms using cultivated land of the size of over 10 ha, carrying out mixed production (plant-animal), equipped with agricultural tractors, and a basic set of tractor-mounted agricultural machinery, with a partial contribution of self-propelled agricultural machines. The scope of the study covered the measurements of effective vibration RMS acceleration (equivalent, maximum, minimum, peak) frequency corrected on the seats of agricultural vehicles in the three spatial directions of vibration (X, Y, Z). These measurements were realized while performing various fi eld and transport work activities during the period of the whole year. A analysis of the peak, maximum and minimum vibration accelerations confi rms that in the agricultural occupational environment there occurs a considerable variation of the vibration values registered. This is also evidenced by high values of the Crest Factor, sometimes exceeding a score of 10. Analysis of the registered equivalent values of vibration acceleration (frequency corrected) from the hygienic aspect showed that vibration occurring on the seats may create risk for farmers’ health while performing such work activities as: tedding and raking of hay, fertilizers spreading, soil aggregation, grass mowing and cultivation. Analysis of the spatial distribution of the measured, frequency corrected vibration accelerations indicates that considerably the highest acceleration values occur in the vertical plane (direction – Z). Literature data clearly confi rm an unfavourable effect of whole body vibration present in agricultural vehicles on discomfort and the occurrence of back pain in the operators, especially in the low back region (lumbar spine), as well as degenerative changes in the spine.

A possibility of recognition of the clinical status of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in relation to severity of the disease was investigated. Three groups: (i) healthy controls (n=15) and two subgroups of ALS patients (ii) mild (n=15) and (iii) severe (n=15) were considered as classes. Four features of the subjects: (i) their age (AGE) (ii) erythropoietin concentration in serum (SERUM), (iii) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and (iv) duration time of the disease (Tdis) were used for classifier construction based on the k Nearest Neighbours (k-NN) rule, known from pattern recognition theory. The presented results demonstrate that the pattern recognition approach may be useful for the evaluation of the severity of the ALS disease.

Opis:
This work presents the principles of image recognition, where quality-based methods are applied. The neural networks and additional software have been proposed. This goal was achieved by using non-parametric recognition algorithms. In this paper the two-state hybrid classification method has been proposed, where artificial intelligence algorithm is included. In recognition process, the learning method, selection and optimization of diagnostic parameters have been introduced. The integrated part of the classifier structure is voting mechanism, which indicates incorrect states of the system – for example the unrecognized images. Effectiveness of the system has been shown by means of examples, where ambiguous data have been incorporated – it is very often a practice of medical diagnostics.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki testów niekonwencjonalnego zastosowania metod do przeszukiwania grafów w celu analizy obrazów powstałych z rezonansu magnetycznego głowy. Zaprezentowano GUI do automatycznej obróbki serii obrazów. Zbudowane klasyfikatory wykazały, że metoda BFS analizy plików DICOM, po odpowiednej selekcji cech, pozwala na 100% rozpoznawanie chorych na wodogłowie i ponad 90% zdrowych, co zachęca do dalszych badań i obserwacji, np. czy osoby sklasyfikowane błędnie jako chorzy, po czasie rzeczywiście nie rozwinęli tej choroby.
There are many methods for image segmentation [1, 2]: threshold, area, edge and hybrid methods. Area methods indicate groups of similar pixels form local regions [3, 4]. Edge methods detect boundaries between homogeneous segments [5, 6, 7]. In this paper we present the results of tests of unconventional implementation of graph search methods for the analysis of images generated from magnetic resonance imaging [8]. We explored the effectiveness of different approaches for dividing areas within a similar gray scale, using adapted graph search algorithms (DFS, BFS) after appropriate modification (Fig. 1). For this purpose, the Weka package (a tool for pre-processing, classification, regression, clustering and data visualization) was used [9]. A training set was generated after analyzing all the series of images from the database. First, we evaluated models created using certain algorithms and compared their efficacy (Tab. 1). This was followed by a selection of attributes (Tab. 2) and a re-evaluation of the models (Tab. 3). Comparison of the results of both evaluations showed that after selection of the relevant product attributes, you can achieve up to 100% detection of patients with hydrocephalus and over 90% proper recognition of healthy persons. This encourages further research and observation, such as whether persons wrongly classified as sick actually developed the disease in time. We designed a web application for the study, written in Windows Azure, as well as a GUI for automatic processing of a series of images (Fig. 2).

The paper presents the computer method of simulation for the process of determining the initial medical diagnosis and the method of examining the selected qualitative characteristics of obtained diagnoses. The presented Computer Medical Decisions Support System uses diagnostic conclusion method based on defining a similarity between the patient’s condition and diseases’ patterns contained in repository. The application allows simulation of the diagnostic process and examination of qualitative characteristics of this process, particularly: a reliability indicator of generated medical diagnosis with different test scenarios is presented. This computer program was built using NET Framework technology and supporting libraries.
W pracy przedstawiono metodę komputerowej symulacji procesu wspomagania ustalania wstępnej diagnozy medycznej oraz symulacyjną metodę badania charakterystyk jakościowych procesu diagnozowania medycznego. Przedstawiony Komputerowy System Wspomagania Diagnozowania Medycznego wykorzystuje metodę wnioskowania opartą na określaniu podobieństwa stanu zdrowia pacjenta dozorców jednostek chorobowych zawartych w repozytorium. Przedstawiona aplikacja pozwala na symulację procesu diagnostycznego i badanie cech jakościowych samego procesu w szczególności wiarygodności diagnostycznej generowanych diagnoz medycznych przy różnych scenariuszach badawczych. Program komputerowy wykorzystuje platformę NET Framework oraz dodatkowe biblioteki.

Objectives: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may be work-related. It has been estimated that 15% of the population burden of COPD is attributable to occupational exposure. However, in Poland COPD is rarely recognized as an occupational disease. The aim of the study has been to analyze the causes of the low prevalence of work-related COPD in the context of the existing criteria as well as to analyze which part of the assessment – clinical or hygienic one – is responsible for such a low rate of occupational COPD recognitions. Material and Methods: The study group included 150 patients hospitalized with a suspicion of occupational COPD. Each patient underwent a clinical examination, spirometry and reversibility test using bronchodilator. Moreover, hygienic evaluation of work conditions was performed in all the considered cases. Results: In the case of the patients who fulfilled the criteria for COPD diagnosis in accordance with the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) occupational origins of the disease, the disease was not recognized because 24.1% of the individuals did not meet spirometric criteria included in a definition of COPD in the Polish list of occupational diseases, while 27.8% of the individuals did not fulfill the criterion of a documented exposure to dusts and irritant gases. None of these criteria was fulfilled by 42.6% of the patients. Conclusions: In our country, both clinical and hygienic criteria result in limitations in recognition of occupational COPD. There is the need to establish new guidelines for the recognition of COPD as a compensable disease in Poland. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(2):139–150

A major challenge over the pandemic period was to establish the criteria for recognizing COVID-19 as an occupational disease. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control has attempted to estimate the incidence of COVID-19 in individual occupational groups and economy sectors in the European Union and the United Kingdom, and to identify possible factors increasing the transmission of the virus at workplaces. Legal regulations of various countries in the world allow COVID-19 to be recognized as an accident at work and/or an occupational disease. In Poland, an occupational disease is defined as a disease caused by harmful factors occurring in the work environment or connected with performing a given job, included in the official list of occupational diseases. When assessing occupational exposure in the healthcare sector, it should be considered that healthcare workers include all persons in contact with patients or their biological material, as well as employees who are not medical professionals but who share a common space with patients due to the nature of their work. The latter group includes administrative and technical employees, control and rescue service workers, people supporting medical staff, and employees of nursing homes. In the case of non-medical occupations, the decision to recognize COVID-19 as an occupational disease should be made on an individual basis, after confirming a significant risk of contracting a SARS-CoV-2 virus infection at the workplace and in the absence of evidence of a non-occupational source of infection. An assessment of occupational exposure should always include evaluating the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
