Z dozą przekonania należy wskazać, iż dobro dziecko powinno być priorytetem we wszystkich ustawodawstwach. Z tego względu wszystkie państwa świata powinny zapewnić, by ich ustawodawstwo było skonstruowane w sposób, który chroni bezbronne podmioty ochrony, czyli dzieci. Stres u dziecka może być spowodowany wieloma czynnikami. Do jednych z nich zaliczyć można sytuację, w której dziecko jest świadkiem w sądzie. Niektóre dzieci dobrze sobie radzą z tą nową sytuacją, niektóre z kolei mogą odczuwać dyskomfort. Dlatego kwestia ochrony dziecka (w skład której wchodzą różne aspekty), powinna być priorytetem. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie regulacji dotyczących tych kwestii w wybranych państwach z poszczególnych kontynentów. Artykuł prezentuje ustawodawstwo takich krajów, jak: Polska, Japonia, Malezja, RPA, Kenia, Nowa Zelandia, Jamajka, Tuvalu, Stany Zjednoczone, w zakresie problematyki dotyczącej zeznań dziecka. Bez wątpienia stwierdzić należy, iż w ustawodawstwie poszczególnych krajów odnaleźć można zarówno wiele punktów zbieżnych, jak i różnic.
All countries need to ensure that their laws are regulated in a way that promotes the interests of the child, because the welfare of the child must always take priority. There is no doubts that being a witness can be stressful – some children can find it stressful. The aim of this article is  to present the regulations in different countries: Poland, Japan, Malaysia, RSA, Kenya, New Zealand, Jamaica, Tuvalu, United States of America. What is important, legislators should look at this issue in a sensitive and proper manner.

The objective of this study was to measure and correlate the solubility of pyrimidine derivatives in five different solvents namely chloroform, N,N-dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran, 1,4-dioxane and ethyl acetate from 298.15 to 328.15 K under atmospheric pressure of 0.1 MPa using gravimetric method. The characterization of all the synthesized compounds was done by IR, NMR and mass spectra. The modified Apelblat and Buchowski-Ksiazczak λh equations were used to correlate the experimental solubility data. Using Van’t Hoff and Gibb’s equations, some thermodynamic parameters such as Gibb’s free energy, enthalpy and entropy of dissolution were evaluated from solubility data. It is found that solubility increases with temperature.

In this study, instead of gasketed or brazed plate heat exchangers, which are used in various fields of application, a direct metal sintering method is used to design a heat exchanger with its original geometry and with different geometries. Studies of heat exchangers found in published literature were reviewed, and the thermal behaviors of the proposed unique designs were examined. Usually heat exchangers using this design do not use channel spacing angles of 30-45-60-75° for the plate ducts. The thermal behaviors of the fluid-circulating systems were analyzed using ANSYS FLUENT software, and they used the boundary conditions found in the literature for this design. Heat transfer between the heat exchanger channels and channel walls was calculated. The analyses results show that an increase in the amount of heat transfer surface area and also an increase in surface roughness increased the amount of positive heat transfer.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of sonoelastography in patients of primary and secondary health care settings. Google scholar, PubMed, Medline, Medscape, Wikipedia and NCBI were searched in October 2017 for all original studies and review articles to identify the relevant material. Two reviewers independently selected articles for evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of sonoelastography in different diseases based on titles and abstracts retrieved by the literature search. The accuracy of sonoelastography in different diseases was used as the index text, while B-mode sonography, micro pure imaging, surgery and histological findings were used as reference texts. Superficial lymph nodes, neck nodules, malignancy in thyroid nodules, benign and malignant cervical lymph nodes, thyroid nodules, prostate carcinoma, benign and malignant breast abnormalities, liver diseases, parotid and salivary gland masses, pancreatic masses, musculoskeletal diseases and renal disorders were target conditions. The data extracted by the two reviewers concerning selected study characteristics and results were presented in tables and figures. In total, 46 studies were found for breast masses, lymph nodes, prostate carcinoma, liver diseases, salivary and parotid gland diseases, pancreatic masses, musculoskeletal diseases and renal diseases, and the overall sensitivity of sonoelastography in diagnosing all these diseases was 83.14% while specificity was 81.41%. This literature review demonstrates that sonoelastography is characterized by high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing different disorders of the body.
Celem badania była ocena dokładności diagnostycznej sonoelastografii u chorych leczonych w warunkach placówek podstawowej i specjalistycznej opieki zdrowotnej. W październiku 2017 roku dokonano przeglądu baz danych Google Scholar, PubMed, MEDLINE, Medscape, Wikipedia oraz NCBI w celu pozyskania prac oryginalnych i poglądowych, które stanowiły materiał do badania. Prace wybierało dwóch badaczy niezależnie. Oceniono dokładność sonoelastografii w diagnostyce różnych chorób na podstawie tytułów i streszczeń wyszukanych prac. Główny termin stanowiła „skuteczność sonoelastografii w diagnostyce różnych chorób”, a terminy „ultrasonografia w trybie B-mode”, „obrazowanie MicroPure”, „zabieg operacyjny” i „wynik badania histopatologicznego” stosowano jako terminy referencyjne. Badane patologie dotyczyły: powierzchownych węzłów chłonnych, guzków okolicy szyi, złośliwych guzów tarczycy, łagodnych i złośliwych zmian w węzłach chłonnych szyjnych, guzków tarczycy, raka gruczołu krokowego, łagodnych i złośliwych zmian w piersiach, chorób wątroby, zmian w śliniankach przyusznych i gruczołach ślinowych, zmian w trzustce, chorób układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego oraz chorób nerek. Pozyskane przez dwóch badaczy dane dotyczące charakterystyki ocenianych prac oraz wyniki analizy przedstawiają tabele i ryciny. W sumie wyszukano 46 badań dotyczących zmian w piersiach, węzłów chłonnych, raka gruczołu krokowego, chorób wątroby, chorób gruczołów ślinowych i ślinianek przyusznych, zmian w trzustce, chorób układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego i chorób nerek, a ogólna czułość i swoistość sonoelastografii w diagnostyce tych chorób wynosiły odpowiednio 83,14% i 81,41%. Niniejszy przegląd literatury wskazuje na wysoką czułość i swoistość sonoelastografii w diagnostyce różnych chorób. Opis:
Factional Discrete-time linear systems with fractional different orders are addressed. The Weierstrass-Kronecker decomposition theorem of the regular pencil is extended to the descriptor fractional discrete-time linear system with different fractional orders. Using the extension, method for finding the solution of the state equation is derived. Effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on a numerical example.

Zawiera analizę porównawczą historii komunizmu w Czechosłowacji oraz – w mniejszym zakresie – w innych krajach bloku wschodniego: pojedyncze artykuły dotyczą Polski, Węgier, Rumunii, Bułgarii i NRD. Uzupełnia stan badań nad komunizmem analizowanym z perspektywy transnarodowej i pomaga zrozumieć doświadczenie, które było udziałem kilku generacji Europejczyków. Autorka szkicu podkreśla wysoki poziom publikacji i jej nowatorstwo w zakresie oparcia naukowego wnioskowania na doświadczeniach potocznych obywateli bloku wschodniego.
The reviewed volume, Perceptions of Society in Communist Europe. Regime Archives and Popular Opinion, was written as a part of a long-term project headed by Muriel Blaive, the editor of the publication. The book included a comparative analysis of the history of communism in Czechoslovakia and to a lesser extent also inother countries of the bloc: single articles concerning Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and the GDR. The reviewed book complements the existing state of research on communism from a transnational point of view and helps to better understand the experience that was shared by several generations of Central and Eastern Europeans. The author of the article underlines high level of the reviewed publication and draws attention to methodological innovation which is exploit a common experience of citizens of communist countries as a part of scientific inference.

In the current study attention has been focused on the evaluation of different methods of measurement of bacterial adhesion to the metal surfaces with different chemical composition. The direct methods, which included determination of the number of bacterial cells using fluorescence microscopy and Colony Forming Units (CFU) on agar medium, and indirect methods using Alamar Blue (AB) and MTT assays, were evaluated. The chemical compositions of the metal surfaces included: copper, iron, chromium and nickel. Interaction effects of assay and metal compound have been specifically demonstrated in this study. It was found that metal ions reacted with components of the indirect colorimetric tests used in his study (AB and MTT assay). Consequently, those tests gave positive false results. In contrast to the indirect methods, direct counting methods such as microscopy techniques and CFU counting, were successfully applied for evaluation of bacterial adhesion to the metal surfaces. However, considering the limits for the surfaces of the examined samples for microscopy, the determination of the CFU was found to be the best method for testing the adhesion to metal surfaces. The method, combined with the appropriate detachment procedures allowed for a precise determination of the number of bacteria on the entire surface of the evaluated metal samples.

Tyre-to-road adhesion has a great influence on transmitting forces between wheels and road surface and in the consequence on the safety of automobile motion. It plays significant role in vehicle motion modelling, especially for the needs of traffic accidents reconstruction and the development of active safety systems in automobiles. Simultaneously, the knowledge about tyre-to-road adhesion is limited, especially in case of the differences between anti-slip properties of summer and winter tyres. In the paper, method of the measurement of tyre-to-road adhesion coefficient is presented. The measurement system SRT-4 consists of special dynamometer trailer, towing vehicle and test-measuring equipment. It was designed for the needs of road engineering and further developed in the Institute of Vehicles of Warsaw University of Technology. It enables to obtain adhesion characteristics, i.e. graph of adhesion coefficient as a function of wheel slip ratio. In the article, examples of tyre-toroad adhesion characteristics and velocity characteristics of peak adhesion coefficient for different types of tyres (summer, winter) in different weather conditions are presented. Differences in characteristics courses caused by tyre type and weather conditions are discussed. For instance, in case of winter tyres it was noticed that their peak value of adhesion coefficient was reached for higher values of slip ratio than it was observed for summer tyres.

Artykuł przedstawia tezę (postawioną przez Alasdaira MacIntyre'a), że spór o znaczenie takich pojęć jak ‘tożsamość’, ‘podmiotowość’, ‘wolność’, jest nierozstrzygalny. Konflikty wokół nich opierają się na błędnym założeniu, że istnieje tylko jedna prawdziwa racjonalność. MacIntyre konfrontuje taką koncepcję (uniwersalizm) z podejściem, które przyznaje, że istnieje wiele różnych rodzajów racjonalności (zakorzenionych w różnych tradycjach). Pierwsza część artykułu prezentuje jak MacIntyre rozumie uniwersalność i tradycję Druga koncentruje się na takich pojęciach, jak tożsamość i wolność, rozwijanych przez dwie tradycje: liberalizm i etykę cnoty. Na koniec przedstawia wniosek, że czynnikiem odróżniającym od siebie te dwie tradycje jest fakt istnienia (nieistnienia) dóbr doskonałości.
The article presents thesis (claimed by Alasdair MacIntyre) that arguing about the meaning of such notions as 'identity', 'subjectivity', 'freedom' is unsolvable. These conflicts are based on a wrong concept that there is only one true rationality. MacIntyre confronts such concept (universalism) with that one which admits that there are many different types of rationalities (rooted in different traditions). The first part of the article shows his (MacIntyre) understanding of universality and tradition. The second focuses on such notions as identity and freedom developed in two traditions, liberlism and virtue ethics. In the end it presents the conclusion that the factor which distinguishes these two traditions is the fact of existing (not existing) goods of excellence.

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the hypolipidemic activity of methanolic and aqueous leaf extracts of Cassia fistula (CF) Linn (Family: Fabaceae) on atherogenic diet (2% cholesterol, 1% Choline Chloride and 2% Lard) induced Male Sprauge-Dawley rats for the period of 21 days. The rats receiving the treatment with leaf methanol and aqueous extract of CF showed significant (P < 0.001) reduction in total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), High density lipoprotein (HDL), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and other parameters at dose dependent manner but the effect was less than the standard drug Atorvastatin. The results revealed the effectiveness of CF plant against hyperlipidemic activity.

The events in Crimea and eastern Ukraine that took place due to the competition between Russia and the EU over possibilities for close cooperation have reinforced the perception of Russia as a key stakeholder in geopolitical upheavals in the post-Soviet sphere. It also served as a reminder that any settlement to political and territorial conflicts within the post-Soviet sphere would have to include Russia. While all other countries in the Eastern Partnership have since associated themselves with either the EU or Russia, Azerbaijan chooses to remain outside such formal obligations. The EU and Russia both have particular interests in Azerbaijan. Russia's interests in Baku lie primarily in it not becoming an alternative to Russia's energy market and remaining within its sphere of influence. The EU, in turn, wants closer ties with Baku since it considers it an alternative energy market to the unreliable Russia. Considering these competing interests of two different actors, this paper is an attempt to chart Baku's course of action in managing to pursue the 'multi-vector' approach. In this paper we explore different ways of solving quadratic equations. Our main goal is to review traditional textbooks methods and offer an alternative, often side-stepped method based on the area model. We conclude that whereas traditional methods offer effective algorithms that quickly lead to the desired results, alternative methods may enhance meaningful and joyful learning.

The following article addresses two reviews of post-doctoral publications, both of which are scandalous on formal and substantive levels. The key elements related to the issue are the same person (professor), acting both as a reviewer in one case, and as a committee chair in the other, along with two dramatically different final decisions concerning both post-doctoral applications. This review seeks to address two articles by Anna Bączkowska and a monograph by Dorota Zielińska-Długosz. Aside from a substantive evaluation, I address the issue of ethical conduct in relation to “Kodeks etyki pracownika naukowego” PAN (Polish Academy of Sciences Scolar’s Ethics Code). The ground of professional ethics is important not only in relation to both authors’ publications, but also to the process of post-doctoral degree procedure.

We investigated the phenotypic variation of five morphological needle characters of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in three populations. Two of the populations occurred in bogs and the third one formed a degraded fresh pine forest showing some features of a dry pine forest. The greatest variation was found in characters a (needle length), b and d, denoting the number of stomatal rows respectively on the convex and flat sides of the needle. Conversely, characters c and e (average number of stomata per 2 mm of needle length on the convex and the flat side of the needle) were stable, with little interindividual variation. The two bog populations and the dryland population exhibited different sets of character correlations. The interpopulation differentiational detected on the basis of morphological character expression was markedly influenced by both the different edaphic conditions, and the distinct genetic structure of the studied populations.

Opis:
Positive descriptor fractional discrete-time linear systems with fractional different orders are addressed in the paper. The decomposition of the regular pencil is used to extend necessary and sufficient conditions for positivity of the descriptor fractional discrete-time linear system with different fractional orders. A method for finding the decentralized controller for the class of positive systems is proposed and its effectiveness is demonstrated on a numerical example.

Rudyard Kipling says in the Ballad of East and West: “East is East, and West is West; and never the twain shall meet.” Yet, he never expected that with the technological development in transportation and communication, the Westerners and Easterners that have quite different cultures respectively would meet so frequently nowadays in international settings. However, in a sense, Kipling is absolutely correct in that people with different cultural patterns (including beliefs, values, attitudes, norms, customs, and material aspects), especially those from East and West, do encounter communication difficulties, breakdowns, misunderstandings and even conflicts and confrontations just because they fail to understand each other in their intercultural communication. The study of intercultural communication is not something new. However, the perspective from which the author probes into the problematic interaction between Easterners and Westerners is something different. In the paper, the author compares some major cultural patterns: high-context communication vs. low-context communication, individualism vs. collectivism, equality vs. hierarchy, and assertiveness vs. interpersonal harmony. Each of these cultural patterns is defined by examples, two opposite patterns are contrasted, and then potential problems are presented, thus making quite obvious the differences between East and West and their possible consequences in the intercultural communication. Understanding these cultural patterns or orientations which underlie most common behavior of the Easterners and Westerners helps us to see beneath the surface to find out why people from East and West act as they do. This discovery may lead us to appreciate the rich diversity and genius that exist in different parts of the globe, avoid potential intercultural problems and become successful communicators in the interaction between East and West.

Yellow lupin seeds cv. Juno were stored under laboratory conditions for 2 month, 4, 6 and 8 years. Eighteen soluble carbohydrates were identified in embryonic axes and cotyledons of different age seeds. The concentration of soluble carbohydrates in analysed seeds ranged from 25 to 34% of dry mass. Axes contained more carbohydrates than cotyledons. Stachyose dominated in axes, and verbascose - in cotyledons. Other detected galactosides were: galactinol, galactosyl pinitols and galactosyl chiro-inositols (fagopyritols), but their content was several-fold lower than that of RFOs (in both axes and cotyledons tissues). The concentration of soluble carbohydrates indicated, that sucrose to RFOs mass ratio, or other changes in sugars composition are not indicators of seed storage.

School textbooks written by a Spanish erudite and pedagogue Juan Luis Vives were used in schools of Protestant denominations in Royal Prussia – in Gdańsk, Toruń, Elbląg, but also in other towns and cities of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth– for teaching Latin. Nicolaus Volckmar, of German descent, a Polish language teacher at the Academic Gymnasium in Gdańsk, utilized the structure and themes of Vives’ dialogues Exercitatio linguae latinae  (1538) for teaching the Polish language. In this manner, paradoxically, the “phrasebook” of the Spanish humanist, as well as its subsequent editions, still in the 18th century was used by Gdańsk schoolers of German origin to learn the language which they needed for everyday communication in the community of multi-cultural and multi-ethnic Gdańsk. The Vives-Volckmar phrasebook was undoubtedly used by Arnold von Holten, later a lifetime mayor of the city, sent on a diplomatic mission to Spain by the Hanseatic League.

We wszelkich opracowaniach z zakresu dobrego rządzenia zakłada się, że istnieje jeden jedynie słuszny model sprawnego państwa. Wpływa on izomorficznie na rozwój państw, których rządy są skłaniane do przyjęcia tego jedynego podejścia na rzecz osiągnięcia celu. W poniższym artykule kwestionuję tezę, że taki jedynie słuszny model w ogóle istnieje, uznając, że nawet nie przybliża nas on do tego, czym jest tzw. sprawne państwo. Państwa to bardzo zróżnicowane organizmy i struktury, nawet jeśli zwykliśmy określać je mianem modelowych. Mój wniosek oparty jest na badaniach praktyk zarządzania finansami publicznymi zarówno w krajach OECD, jak i państwach spoza tej organizacji. Badania ukazują, że sprawne państwo wcale nie musi charakteryzować się lepszymi praktykami zarządzania wynikającymi z wdrożenia "jedynie słusznego" modelu. Dobre zarządzanie finansami publicznymi w każdym kraju oznacza co innego. Konkluzją artykułu jest stwierdzenie, że model dobrego rządzenia umożliwia wyłącznie dostęp do swoistego "menu", a rozwój społeczeństwa należy badać, zadając sobie pytanie, dlaczego różne państwa wybierają z owego "menu" różne pozycje.
Work on good governance implies a one-best-way model of effective government. This has isomorphic influences on development, whereby governments are influenced to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to get things done. This article challenges whether such an approach exists, proposing that models actually do not hold even for the so-called effective governments. Governments look different, even if they are similarly called models of good government. This proposition is examined through a study of public financial management practices in a set of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and non-OECD countries. The study shows that effective governments are not more likely to exhibit better practice characteristics implied in one-best-way models. Good public financial management means different things in different countries. The article concludes by suggesting that good governance models give way to menus and the development community invest more time in examining why different countries select different menu items.

The article asserts the need for organizations to adopt intentional and transformative Global Inclusion, Diversity, Belonging, Equity, and Access (GIDBEA) practices, to ensure their future readiness. The research developed reaffirms the benefits of GIDBEA strategies in identifying gap areas and navigating crises, by providing insights on how to successfully embed a ‘new different’ GIDBEA strategy into organizational frameworks. By drawing trends across the 2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic and other previous health and economic crises, it is indicated what is described as the “normality of disruption” and the need to move away from the idea of a ‘new normal’ to a new different. The new different acknowledges that the ‘normal’ or the status quo was often challenging for many. The impact and importance of the disruptions that individuals, communities, nations, etc., all have and will face together, is also recognized. The new different emphasizes organizational transformation through co-creation, sustainability, adaptivity, resilience, and design thinking. By implementing a design thinking model, GIDBEA proactively engages mistakes while promoting innovation through dissent and disruption. As a result, disruptions are not considered episodic crises but as recurring, expected, and presenting opportunities. Furthermore, it is argued that GIDBEA expertise is essential for remaining agile, innovative, and providing strategic organizational architecture to prepare and innovate for these disruptions. However, it is necessary to consider that GIDBEA practice can be limited due to the failure of organizations and leaders to frame it as an asset and develop strategic plans to leverage it in the same way they do other critical functional business units. Therefore, unless prioritized and conducted intentionally, GIDBEA work will not achieve its promised bonuses and transformative potential. The article offers readers insights and tools to assess existing GIDBEA within their organization. Using metaphors of “construction” and “architecture,” it illustrates how reimaging organizational architectures and constructing initiatives focused on GIDBEA are fundamental to resiliency, organizational sustainability, and the ability to thrive through shifting landscapes.

In order to show the influence of soil pH and soil suitability complex on potato yield, long term experiments were carried out at different N doses (40 - 160 kg N ha⁻¹) and under different soil and climatic conditions (40 - 160 kg N ha⁻¹) in 1971 - 1990. Experiment results for each of the four soil suitability complexes were classified according to soil pH into following groups: pH in KCl 4.5; 4.6 - 5.5, 4.6 - 6.5 and 6.5. The optimum soil pH for potato production was found to dependent on the soil suitability complex.

There are many different definitions of the group of circular units of a real abelian field. The aim of this paper is to study their relations in the special case of a compositum k of real quadratic fields such that -1 is not a square in the genus field K of k in the narrow sense. The reason why fields of this type are considered is as follows. In such a field it is possible to define a group C of units (slightly bigger than Sinnott's group of circular units) such that the Galois group acts on C/(±C²) trivially (see [K, Lemma 2]). Due to this key property we can easily compare different groups of circular units (see the conclusion of this paper).
