Opis:: Goal – this article’s main goal is to showing that the truly important economic processes happen at the microeconomic level, they happen in enterprises. This is where the surplus value is produced. Producing this value is not easy, however, and is associated with a number of challenges. Research methodology – the author focuses on the descriptive method, which shows, on the one hand, the importance of activity at the microeconomic level, and on the other hand, indicating selected challenges faced by modern enterprises. Score/results – the article allowed to indicate the specificity of conditions in which modern enterprises operate. Large number of them are able to maintain their position in the industry for a very long time. It is able, but it is not so sure. In the conditions of global competition, nothing is certain in the long run, including the position of enterprises. They can work better or worse, they can be very small or larger, they can grow or curl, unfortunately they also fall. Originality/value – the article is a standard description of economic reality. It has no novelty or innovative aspects, it only organizes the described reality.

Opis:: Purpose: The aim of the paper is to discuss assumptions that stand behind the idea that, in order to analyze a way in which organizations are willing to respond to environmental challenges, it is necessary to consider how the diffusion of knowledge related to sustainable management practices can impact on decision making dependent on managers’ cognitive frames. The analysis is focused on the sensemaking process initiated by a necessity to make a decision on whether to engage in a sustainability project involving steps to be made to protect natural environment. The attention is paid to its possible realization dependent on cognitive frames used by decision makers. This way of analysis allows for better understanding of factors which may hinder enterprises from implementing sustainability idea. In the paper current literature related to the topic is reviewed and next selected issues considered as critical for understanding the matter are described and discussed. Design/methodology/approach: Theoretical analysis is conducted and the key assumptions of critical realism related to ontological and epistemological dimensions are implemented. The importance of abductive way of thinking is outlined. Findings: In general, it is argued that managers who are more likely to accept paradoxical nature of challenges related to the implementation of sustainability tools should find it more useful to follow multidimensional paths through which they may reach stakeholders. It is also presented that in order to show how decisions as to implement the sustainability idea can be made, it is necessary to take into account consequences that are to arise from the fact that attitudes towards sustainability management are influenced by historical conditions. Because of the wide array of actors who may contribute to the successful implementation of the sustainability idea, it is predicted that different cognitive approaches should be used. The arguments that are provided appear to also prove that it is useful to consider deeply relations among sensemaking process and cognitive frames used by managers. Originality/value: The paper includes an authorial analysis in which conclusions are inferred based on hitherto conducted research and formulated research propositions related to sensemaking process, cognitive aspects of making decisions as well as to issues of building legitimacy in the light of environmental challenges which modern enterprises need to deal with. The analysis can provide decision makers with some new insights as to why they make decisions as they used to, which next should allow them to change their habits.

Opis:: The main threat to the economic development of Poland is the danger of overlapping of two processes – the decline in the growth of the working age population and the outflow of young, talented and educated people to richer countries. Therefore, the most important goal of the economic policy should be rapid making up the gap to the average EU level. This can be impeded by the current state of public finances, due to high level of debt. Moreo-ver, there are also other factors, which under certain conditions, may lead to a cumulative negative effect, which in turn would threaten the financial stability of the budget. At the same time, the bases of competitiveness of the economy gradually expire, which requires transition to the competition of a qualitative nature. According to the Author, an oppor-tunity to avoid the threat is to use the global market more extensively. He suggests public innovation in a form of the so-called smart company incubators.
Głównym zagrożeniem dla rozwoju gospodarczego Polski jest niebezpieczeństwo nałożenia się dwóch procesów – spadku przyrostu ludności w wieku produkcyjnym oraz odpływu młodych, zdolnych i wykształconych osób do krajów bogatszych. Dlatego też, najważniejszym celem polityki gospodarczej powinno być szybkie odrobienie dystansu do średniego poziomu UE. Utrudnić to może obecny stan finansów państwa, z powodu wysokiego poziomu zadłużenia. Ponadto, pojawiają się też inne czynniki, które w określonych warunkach mogą doprowadzić do skumulowanego, negatywnego efektu, który z kolei zagrozi stabilności finansowej budżetu. Jednocześnie stopniowo wygasają dotychczasowe podstawy kon kurencyjności gospodarki, co wymaga przejścia do konkurencji o charakterze jakościowym. Zdaniem autora, szansą dla uniknięcia zagrożenia jest dużo szersze wykorzystanie rynku globalnego. Proponuje innowację publiczną w postaci tzw. inkubatorów inteligentnych firm.

Podkreślono rolę kapitału intelektualnego i sektora pozarządowego w rozwoju gospodarczym. Przedstawiono przykład polskiej gospodarki podejmującej wyzwania rozwojowe i planującej zmiany w wybranych obszarach. Sprawne i efektywne państwo, konkurencyjna gospodarka oraz spójność społeczna i terytorialna, to główne obszary rozwojowe Polski do roku 2020.
The paper presents the basic changes in the modern capitalistic economies paradigm ensuing from crisis and evolutionary processes. Author describes the challenges of modern market economies indicating the problems of macroeconomic balance and production output decrease. There is a presentation of classic problems in economic policy on the base of Rodrik trilema and afterwards it is a proposal ofnewfoundations for economy model. It considers natural environment aspects and environmental costs implementation as well as intellectual capital and non-government organizations role in the economic development. The second part of the article deals with the case study ofPolish economyfacing development challenges andplanning changes in the selected areas. Proficient and efficient state and institutions, competitive economy and social and territorial integrity are the main fields of development for Poland till 2020.

Opis:: The study deals with the practical dimension of CSR initiatives, pointing to the good practices of an increasing number of companies in Poland in the context of their development. The CSR concept is gaining more importance in the development of companies and the idea of socially responsible business, implemented and consistently performed by enterprises, can significantly contribute to the growth of competitiveness on the market, building company’s value and shaping a lasting advantage over competitors. The main objective of the study was to examine good practices of Polish companies in terms of sustainable development challenges. The specific objective of this paper was to indicate the areas of corporate social responsibility in selected companies. The analysis focused on the following CSR areas: community involvement and development, consumer issues, the environment and labour practices. The study of the subject literature and websites on good CSR practices and the statistical and econometric analysis were used as research methods. A comparative analysis of CSR initiatives of selected companies was performed, comparing the tabulated information from the last few years. For the number of companies and practices in 2014-2018, the analysis of the dynamics was performed. First, simple indexes (one-base and chain) were determined. Next, the mid-term chain index and the mid-term rate of change were calculated and interpreted. Finally, for both variables, a linear trend model was determined. The results of the dynamics’ analysis indicated a clear upward trend both in terms of the number of socially responsible companies in Poland, and in the amount of good practices implemented by those companies. In the following years, a further systematic increase in the values of both variables is to be expected.

Opis:: The aim of this article is to answer the question of what fundamental modernization and developmental challenges Poland currently faces. The author argues that the developmental model that has been in place in Poland for the last 25 years — and generally worked quite well, which is evidenced by many major achievements and several economic and social indices — is just exhausting its potential. Simultaneously, we are observing intensification and aggra- vation of several problems — either as yet unresolved or new ones — which jointly constitute something we may call a social deficit. The main message of the paper can be summarized in a nutshell as a thesis that under current situation and circumstances, it becomes necessary to proceed to new generation of competitiveness, launch different developmental leverages, which — speaking in most general terms — are to be found mainly in the social realm. The article consists of three parts. The first one is dedicated to the characteristics of strengths and weaknesses of Polish modernization after 1989 against the background of the situation in other CEE countries. The second one defines five key developmental challenges currently faced by Poland. The third part predominantly features the fundamental difference between the previous, post-transformational developmental policy and the new, pro- innovative modernization strategy, which places social policy in the very centre of its focus.

Opis:: Celem badań była próba identyfikacji najważniejszych wyzwań, w obliczu których stoją regiony rozdrobnionego rolnictwa. W tym przypadku związanych z potrzebą skutecznego rozwiązywania problemów specyficznego regionu jakim jest Podkarpacie, w aspekcie wykorzystania endogenicznych zasobów rolnictwa i obszarów wiejskich w procesie kształtowania rozwoju zrównoważonego. Badania potwierdziły, że na powszechne problemy rozdrobnionego rolnictwa w Polsce w regionie nakładają się zapóźnienia rozwojowe potwierdzone znacznie niższymi od średnich krajowych wskaźnikami, a duże zróżnicowanie przyrodniczych uwarunkowań rozwoju nie znajduje odzwierciedleniach w ukształtowanych strukturach i ich przeobrażeniach. Sytuacja taka stwarza realne zagrożenie marginalizacją obszarów wiejskich regionu.
The aim of this study was to identify the key challenges faced by the region with fragmented agriculture. In this case, related to the need to resolve problems specific to what is Subcarpathian region, in terms of the use of endogenous resources in agriculture and rural areas in the process of sustainable development. Research has shown that the widespread problems of agriculture in Poland crumbled in the region of overlap with developmental retardation confirmed significantly lower than the national average rates, and a large variety of natural conditions for development is not shown in shaped structures and their transformations. This situation poses a real risk of being marginalized.
