    The author of the paper propounds a holistic outlook on how French writers of the 19th century perceived the fate of Poland in the most dramatic moment of its history, when it was fighting a fierce, and almost hopeless battle for its independence, having disappeared from the map of Europe. In texts of many poets, publicists and men of letters in France one can find a unique set of motifs that not only reveal a highly consistent way of thinking with respect to the situation Poland was in at the time, but also build a parallel vision of its future, and even hold a belief that Poland was to play a special role among European countries. In this paper the author identifies and discusses six such motifs.

    The present paper focuses on the diary of the French painter Félix Ziem (1821-1911) and inquires the destiny of the painter emerging from his writings. Basing on the theories of diary writing (B. Didier, A. Girard, J. Lis), it shows how the artist represents his profession. The analyses convey that three elements are necessary for Félix Ziem to fulfill the destiny of the painter: hard work, dreamy contemplation of nature and travels. Those elements are described in detail in the three consecutive parts of the paper. The conclusions display a self-confident artist, influenced by Romantic aesthetics, who consciously constructs in his diary a testimony of his life as an example of painter’s destiny.

    In the last 25 years, polemics about Constantin Noica multiplied. For a significant part of the Romanian intellectual élite, he is an exceptional philosopher, maybe the most representative of the Romanian culture in the 20th century. For a little one, his work and his activity represent the “embodiment” of all the critical problems of Romanian culture in the last century. A few scholars criticize philosopher’s ideological options, toward authoritarianism and totalitarianism. In my paper, I present an intellectual profile of the philosopher by revisiting his ontology. I strongly agree with Ion Ianoşi, who stressed that the philosophy of Noica is mainly based on the traditionalism. From this perspective of interpretation, Noica remains a controversial author, but reveals himself as one of the most consistent Romanian philosopher from the last century, who preserved his views till the end of his life.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie czytelnikowi sylwetek bohaterek dwóch francuskich powieści sentymentalnych, szesnastowiecznych Angoisses Douloureuses Hélisenne de Crenne i Księżnej de Clèves Pani de La Fayette napisanej wiek później. Koleje losu obu dam mają wiele podobieństw. Obie wcześnie osierocono przez ojców , są wychowywane niezwykle troskliwie przez matki. Obie odznaczają się niecodzienną urodą. Miłość, którą przeżywają poza uświęconymi małżeńskimi ramami, zmusza je do przemyśleń i analizy własnych uczuć, jak również do powzięcia decyzji o dalszym życiu. Hélisenne świadomie wybiera uczucie, afirmując tym samym prawo do miłości, co jest zgodne z koncepcją renesansu. Księżna de Clèves, natomiast, dumna i butna, odrzuca uczucie w imię rozsądku, zimnej kalkulacji podyktowanej egoizmem — znamię to kartezjańskiej moralności epoki racjonalizmu.

    In his short novel published before À Rebours, entitled À vau-l’eau, Huysmans tells a story of a protagonist unable to find good food. His quest for a passable restaurant remains unfulfilled, and joins other unfulfilled needs linked to his social life. It becomes clear that behind this quest, told with numerous details and a significant emphasis, there are other, more profound needs that Huysmans will name, more and more directly, in his post-naturalist novels. At the deepest level, the quest comes down to the impossibility to accept life’s difficulties, its duality, and to the wound of an unhappy childhood and a lost mother, so little named and therefore so present in Huysmans’ works.

    Étienne-Léon de Lamothe-Langon (1786-1864) was the author of numerous novels belonging to different genres. However, if he wasn’t completely forgotten by the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th c., it was thanks to a long list of apocryphal memoirs attributed to famous people which in fact he wrote himself. At first, this paper shows reactions from the press in 1829 after the publication of Mémoires d’une femme de qualité sur Louis XVIII and Mémoires de la comtesse Du Barri. Although some journalists chose to perpetuate the fiction that the memoirs were authentic, others denounced them as false and heavily criticized this kind of literary enterprise. Thereafter, the article focuses on Lamothe-Langon’s response to his critics and on his vision of apocryphal memoirs in his preface to Les Après-diners de S. A. S. Cambacérès (1837).

    In the poem Les Fossiles (1854), Louis Bouilhet tells the story of the evolution of life. Inspired by various naturalists, he imagines the emergence of life on Earth, the birth of species, and their extinction followed by the emergence of new forms of life. The destiny of humankind is subordinate to this law of nature: humans will be supplanted by more perfect beings. The purpose of this article is to consider the influence of Charles Bonnet's palingenetic philosophy on Bouilhet from the perspective of epistemocritical methodology, allowing the identification of epistemological transfers between the work of the naturalist and that of the poet.

    In this paper the author attempts to determine a cross-cultural ethic. It shall be understood as a place, from which deliberations are made to critically contemplate the living situation of todays humans with the future in mind. The Principle of Responsibility of Hans Jonas provides a baseline for our reflection. In view of the world economic structures, the geostrategic and political parameters of the world, Globalisation reveals itself as a mechanism which leads to neoliberalism. The turbulences, wars, and actions of terrrorism deliver the evidence that the Great Powers have already been challenged to initiate a new world politic order which renounces violence. The method of cummunity (collaborative) ethic as developed by the Philosopher Dominique Kahang’a proceeds from the thought of consciousness of our ecology (environment) as well as a Dialog with the purpose of achieving peace between the religions and the nations. Human rights, national constitution and democratic values of a constitutional state are also being considered in African countries.
    In dieser Abhandlung wird der Versuch unternommen, eine transkulturelle Lebensethik zu bestimmen. Sie versteht sich als ein Ort, von dem aus Überlegungen angestellt werden, um die Lebenswirklicht des Menschen von heute mit Blick auf seine Zukunft hin kritisch zu betrachten. Das Prinzip Verantwortung von Hans Jonas dient uns zur Grundlage unserer Reflexion. Angesichts der Weltökonomischen Strukturen, der geostrategischen und politischen Parameter der Welt erweist sich die Globalisierung als ein Mechanismus, der zum Neoliberalismus führt. Die Unruhen, Kriege und Terroraktionen liefern den Beweis dafür, dass die Groβen Mächte längst herausgefordert sind, eine neue Weltpolitik zu initiieren, die auf Gewalt verzichtet. Der Weg einer Gemeinschaftsethik, den der Philosoph entfaltet, geht vor allem vom Gedanken aus, der das Bewusstsein über die Ökologie (Umwelt) sowie den Dialog zum Frieden zwischen den Religionen und den Nationen fördert. Menschenrechte, Staatsverfassungen, demokratische Werte eines Rechtsstaates werden auch in den Ländern Afrikas in Erwägung gezogen.

    The purpose of this article entitled “The snow and the war in The Snow was dirty by Georges Simenon and Warna or the weight of the snow by Paul Willems” is to show how the snow is playing a structuring role in the two studied works: first, due to its ambivalent properties, it makes the plot switch, secondly, it lets overcome the reality of the war in order to explore general questions as fate, purity and redemption.
    Cet article vise à montrer comment la neige joue un rôle structurant dans les deux oeuvres étudieés : d'abord, du fait de ses propriétés ambivalentes, elle fait basculer l'intrigue ; ensuite, elle permet de dépasser la réalité de la guerre dans la mesure où elle mène à des questions plus générales comme la pureté et la mémoire, le destin et la redemption.

    1. The aim of the article is to reconstruct the biography of Countess Laura Czosnowska, the daughter of Colonel Franciszek Górski, who was generally considered one of the Warsaw socialites at the beginning of the 1830s (calling Laura a “Lioness” the author makes an allusion to Stanisław Bogusławski’s play Lions and Lionesses of 1846). 2. Countess Czosnowska’s history is a streak of painful and unhappy events. Her first marriage to Captain Janusz Czosnowski, an officer of the Polish Army, that was concluded on 16 December 1830, ends in dramatic circumstances with the husband’s suicide (he suspected his wife of a romance with her step-brother, Józef Poniatowski – a natural son of Józef Antoni Poniatowski and Zofia Oborska). After this event Laura takes refuge in the palace of her mother, the wife of General Dziekoński, in Hieronimowo, where she brings up Michalina Dziekońska (later to be Zaleska). There, by accident, she contributes to the death of Michalina’s father, Michał Dziekoński, Mrs Dziekońska’s brother-in-law. A series of traumatic events results in Laura moving to Paris – and this is the beginning of the second stage of her life. 3. In the capital of France the woman makes Karol Edmund Chojecki’s acquaintance – in the circle of their mutual acquaintances the author mentions Maria Kalergis, Fryderyk Chopin and Cyprian Norwid. From Laura and Karol Chojecki’s relationship Maria was born in 1847 – and Karol admitted his fatherhood at once, however, Laura (influenced by Mrs. Dziekońska) tried to hide the fact of the birth, as she was afraid of a scandal. Czosnowska also did not even think about marrying Chojecki, as it would be seen as a misalliance. As a result of Mrs. Dziekońska’s intrigues Karol lost contact with his daughter; to make things worse he was forced to leave France for political reasons (he was involved in the activities of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon’s “Voix du Peuple” and of Adam Mickiewicz’s “Trybuna Ludów”). After a year’s stay in Egypt Chojecki comes to Nice; soon he also obtains a residence permit and he regains his child. The little Maria is placed in a boarding house in Neuilly, then she continues her education in Switzerland, and when she is seventeen she returns to Paris and on 12 September 1856 marries a young captain, Edmond Bureau. So the relation between Laura Czosnowska and Karol Edmund Chojecki – like her first marriage – ends in dramatic circumstances. Czosnowska’s third love affair does not look better; in 1854 she married in England Viscount Jean-Alexandre de Labarthe-Giscaro. The new husband soon turned out to be a fraudster and a bankrupt – after many problems with the law (and after some court sentences) in 1872 the viscount is finally sentenced to 20 years of hard labor in Caledonia and a fine of 3,000 francs (the reason being a forgery of a letter of credit signed on behalf of Ernest Courtot de Cissey, the then minister of war). Laura allots all her meager savings for supporting her exiled husband and for maintaining the two children from that marriage (the daughter placed in a boarding house ran by nuns and the gravely ill son). Jean-Alexandre dies in 1875. In 1881 Cyprian Norwid informs Konstancja Górska about the hurtful fate of the late Laura’s children. However, it is difficult to establish the date of Laura’s death – we may only be sure (owing to the genealogical note written by the son of Maria – Laura Czosnowska and Karol Edmund Chojecki’s natural daughter – saying that she died – like many Polish emigrants – in the Paris St Casimir’s Institute. We may also suppose that Chojecki tried to aid her in the last years of her life, although we do not have documents that could unambiguously confirm these intuitions.

    At first, the authors describe complex history of the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw founded in 1954 by arbitrary decision of the communist government in Poland. At that time Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski was arrested and held in a place of internment which was closely guarded by the state authorities. The issues of the canonicity of University began to clarify in the late fifties of the twentieth century, thanks to strong involvement of the Primate of the Millennium. These issues are summarized by Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski’s (now Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education) quote from his speech. When on 12 October 1998 he was receiving his honoris causa of the Academy of Catholic Theology he said: When in 1954 this Academy was established on the basis of a resolution of the Council of Ministers as a state theological university, it was probably, in the intentions of the communist authorities who programmed atheism and fight religion to act as a Trojan horse in the Church. I think many people of the Church remembered back then the words of Laocoon from Virgil’s Aeneid: “Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes” - (I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts). Academy of Catholic Theology, however, did not let to its instrumentalization and deception, it did not allow to enslave, but has become a genuine university and a serious study of the theological sciences, it has become a brave defender of freedom of thought and a pioneer of the contemporary reality thought of our country, it has made an undeniable contribution to Polish culture and Polish science. The authors also brought out from the very rich legacy of Cardinal speeches the text presented at the ACT in 1976. Primate then said: the reality is that if God is love, then the whole of humanization is a form of penetration of everyday life with the forces of love of the Creator, it is benefiting it from Him and transmitting it to man - as Christ did. Today, we have a good example of such behavior. It is the St. Francis of Assisi, whose 750th anniversary of death we are considering this year. [...] Francis is very current for our times. He carried out the Gospel and humanized human life with it and the Gospel is always valid for the humanization of human life.These words became even more meaningful after 13 March 2013, when Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was elected for pope and chose the name Francis. When in the end of the nineties ACT began transforming into a university-level facility, the name of the future of the University and its patron considered various possibilities. During one discussion a proposal was made: Primate of the Millennium. Everyone agreed to that proposal. It was recognized that the election of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski as the Patron of the University will put before a new task of restoration the University and its permanent preservation in the Polish society awareness of the person and the work of Cardinal Wyszynski, his role in the postwar period, during extremely difficult times. In its name the University refers to a great patriot and a statesman of the Church, as well as an outstanding figure of Polish history.
