    This paper points to the exceptional place of the novel Kap španske krvi (A Drop of Spanish Blood, 1932) in the literary work of Miloš Crnjanski and Serbian literature of the 20th century. The novel is overpowered by other great literary pieces by Crnjanski Dnevnik o Čarnojeviću (The Journal of Čarnojević), Seobe (Migrations), Druga knjiga Seoba (Other books of Migrations), Roman o Londonu (A Novel about London). Nevertheless, it is interpreted as the first Serbian novel in which the model of a fatal woman is activated and, in the era of  modernism, revitalizes the romantic concept of femme fatale.

    The article presents the experiences of loss, grief, and mourning endured by Josef Váchal and described by him in his book In memoriam Marie Váchalové (1923). Josef Váchal, who was one of the leading artists of the Czech art in the twentieth century, was a pioneer of printmaking in Czechia, famous for his woodcuts. He was also an interesting painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. While reading, the reader turns from the verbal description to the visual one and back again, since the book combines words and images. It contains 45 colour and 25 black-and-white woodcuts. This is a very personal and intimate confession of pain after the death of the artist’s wife, but also the record of his remorse and guilt for the romance he had in the last years of her life. However, the book also raises important metaphysical questions. Standing watch over the coffin and catafalque, Váchal photographed the dead woman for two days. The photographs became the basis for his woodcuts included in the book. The aim of this activity was not so much to commemorate his wife as to tell the story of the posthumous fate of the soul, which fascinated the artist as a mystic, interested also in the esoteric knowledge and spiritualism. The article deals with questions about the relationship between demonism and holiness, as shown and experienced by Váchal, and about his understanding of death and God.

    In this article I claim that there is a hidden assumption of the demonic character of God in the exclusivist and inclusivist theism. Exclusivism and inclusivism assume that God is partial and in fact does not care about most people in the world, choosing to reveal himself fully only in one part of the world. This kind of neglect for other people reflects the standard ethnocentrism and seems to be an expression of it. The only way to avoid the view that God is demonic is to accept the religious pluralism. The idea of religion would need to be changed: from the idea of religion as a place of revelation of God to the idea of religion as a place for searching for God. Accepting religious pluralism would lead, however, to the destruction of religions as we know them, since the core of their doctrines is based on the assumption of their superiority.

    Dwa pamflety, mające w tytule demonizm – JKB-Demon Karola Irzykowskiego i Leon Chwistek – Demon Intelektu Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza – należą do ważnych polemik dwudziestolecia, a wśród nich: do ambitnych przedsięwzięć poznawczych. Studium relacjonuje w trybie porównawczym zmagania Irzykowskiego i Witkiewicza z przygniatającymi autokreacjami Juliusza Kadena-Bandrowskiego i Leona Chwistka. Nieprzeniknione cechy osobowości tych ostatnich, rzutujące na ich dzieła, okazują się intelektualnym wyzwaniem godnym tytułowego epitetu. Zgłębiając – oprócz dokonań swoich przeciwników – także własną odrazę i fascynację, każdy z krytyków uświadamia sobie, że ogólna znajomość natury ludzkiej jest bezradna wobec zagadki „demonizmu”. Autorka stawia tezę, że dla umysłów ukształtowanych w dyscyplinie racjonalnej schyłku XIX w. nieuchwytny okazał się fenomen osobowości antynomicznych, „proteuszowych”. Choć ów niepokojący typ osobowości zgłębiała literatura (Stawrogin Fiodora Dostojewskiego, Kurtz Josepha Conrada), autorzy pamfletów okazują się niegotowi na konfrontację z nim w realnym życiu.
    Karol Irzykowski’s “JKB-Demon” [JKB-Demon] and “Leon Chwistek – Demon Intelektu” [Leon Chwistek – Demon of the Intellect] by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, two pamphlets referring in their titles to demonism, belong to crucial polemical publications of the interwar period and within that group of publications constitute ambitious cognitive endeavours. This study compares the strife Irzykowski and Witkiewicz had to cope with to take in the overwhelming selfcreations of Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski and Leon Chwistek. The inscrutable personalities of the latter two reflected in their works turned out to be an intellectual challenge worthy of the epithets used in both titles. Exploring their own abhorrence and fascination alongside their opponents’ achievements, both critics realised that a general familiarity with human nature was helpless when faced with the puzzle of ‘demonism.’ The author assumes that the phenomenon of antinomian, ‘Protean’ personalities remained beyond the grasp of minds shaped by the rational discipline of the late nineteenth century. Although literature has already studied this disturbing personality type (Dostoevsky’s Stavrogin, Conrad’s Kurtz), the authors of the pamphlets turned out to be unprepared to confront it in real life.
