Opis:
Introduction. Subdural hygromas (SDGs) are the accumulation of fluid in the subdural space. Arachnoid cysts (ACs) on the other hand are common cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) containing lesions of the central nervous system, located within the subarachnoid space. They are generally found incidentally on neuroimaging studies and remain asymptomatic throughout the life. Rupture into the subdural space resulting in subdural hygroma (SDG) is relatively rare. Aim. We aimed to show the importance of the radiological follow up in head trauma patients having large ACs. Description of the case. We report a case of a 69-year-old male patient with a known large Galassi type III AC, presented to our hospital with traumatic brain injuries and re-presented with acute posttraumatic SDG in association with AC rupture. Conclusion. This case emphasizes the importance of radiological follow up in head trauma patients having large ACs to reveal and appropriately manage traumatic subdural collections.

Epidermal cyst is the most commonly observed cutaneous tumor. It usually involves the scalp, neck, face, back, and trunk. A commonly seen epidermal cyst is usually a slow-growing tumor of a diameter of 1-2 cm. Cysts with a diameter of more than 5 cm have rarely been reported in the literature. Herein we report a case of a giant epidermal cyst localized in the scalp of the occipital area, diagnostic problems and therapeutic proceedings.

Opis:
Introduction: Dermoid cysts (or dermoids) are benign tumors which belong to choristoma group (teratoma). Nasal dermoid cysts (NDCs) are the most common congenital defect of the nasal midline. The diagnosis is usually established at an early age - mainly by the age of 3. Due to late diagnosis and/or delay of surgical treatment, facial deformities, recurrent infections (festering of cysts or subcutaneous infections), nasal blockage or intracranial complications may occur. Case report: This paper presents a clinical case of a 7-year-old boy admitted to the ENT department of the Lviv Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital „OHMATDYT” with symptoms of ongoing pain, swelling and caseous discharge from the fistulous tract on the nasal bridge. Diagnostic MRI showed a bone-shaped structure in the subcutaneous tissue of the nasal bridge. After evaluation, the dermoid cyst was successfully treated surgically with open rhinoplasty. No complaints were reported during the 2-year post-operative period. Conclusions: NDC is a subcutaneous cyst, which derives from the ectoderm and mesoderm. In addition to clinical signs, the radiological imaging methods – CT and MRI – are crucial for NDC diagnosis. The effective method of NDC treatment is radical surgical resection.

Opis:
Pilonidal cyst disease mainly concerns young people, aged between 16 and 25 years. The disease causes significant pain, considerable discomfort and impairs daily functioning, often resulting in an inability to work and study. Many techniques have been introduced in the treatment of pilonidal cysts, but till today no gold standard has been established. The aim of the study was to present initial results considering the treatment of pilonidal cyst disease with the use of a skin flap by means of Limberg’s method. Material and methods. During the period between January, 2012 and March, 2013, 10 patients were operated due to pilonidal cysts using the Limberg flap procedure. All patients presented with the chronic form of the disease and were after previous surgical incisions. Pain considering patients was evaluated using the visual pain scale (VAS), one and 10 days after the operation. Patients reported for control 10 days, one month, and 6 months after the surgical procedure. Results. The planned procedure was safely performed in all cases. There were no complications during the procedure, nor late postoperative complications. We observed no wound infection or dehiscence in all operated patients. The mean follow-up time of the presented group was 13.32 months (ranging between 7.53‑21.57). During the follow-up period there was no episode of recurrence. Conclusions. The use of the skin flap by means of Limberg’s method after excision of the pilonidal cyst in the sacrum area is a good method, which provides a very low percentage of recurrences and complications. Fast return to daily activities, no significant pain in patients, and an acceptable cosmetic result are strong reasons in favor of the above-mentioned method. Preliminary observations and experience enable to recommend this method for the treatment of pilonidal cysts in the vicinity of the sacrum

Opis:
Introduction: Recurrent thyroglossal duct cyst after surgery is not a rare condition and first-line treatment has not been established yet. Aim: Evaluation of outcomes and complications of OK-432 treatment in patients with recurrent thyroglossal duct cyst after surgery. Material and methods: This study is designed as a case series with planned data collection at Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University and Fukase Clinic. Five patients with recurrent thyroglossal duct cyst after surgery received this therapy between January 2014 and February 2020 on an outpatient basis, without hospitalization. OK-432 solution was injected into the lesion using an 18- or 27-gauge needle, depending on the location and size of the lesion, as well as on possible complications. Results: Lesions showed marked reduction or total shrinkage in all patients, with no local scarring or deformity at the injection site. Side effects manifested as local pain at the site of injection and fever (37.5–38.5°C) observed in three patients, but the symptoms resolved within a few days. Conclusions: Since OK-432 therapy is simple, easy, safe and effective, it can be used as an alternative to surgery in the treatment of recurrent thyroglossal duct cyst after surgery.

Splenic cysts are rare disease that are diagnosed incidentally during imaging studies. In recent years, through the development of diagnostic methods the detection of their are increased, although documented and described in the literature of cases is still low. The disease can be asymptomatic - this concerns mainly small cysts, but greater changes cause unspecific symptoms resulting from oppression of enlarged spleen on adjacent organs. Due to the etiology of cysts, they are divided into primordial and false. Primordial cysts have an epithelial lining which distinguishes them from false and they are divided into parasitic and nonparasitic. Because of the possibility of complications cysts usually treated surgically, with the aim to preserve the splenic parenchyma. We present a case of a 28-year-old woman who has revealed the presence of epidermal cysts of the spleen

Lymphangiomas are very rare, mesenteric tumours in the small intestine. Usually, they are found in the head or neck and are mainly diagnosed in paediatric patients. These tumours appear in adult patients, but are extremely rare. We report on a 46-year-old patient who was operated on in 2012 at the General Surgery Department of St. Jan Grande Hospital in Krakow. The patient presented with chronic abdominal pain and with episodes of nausea for 3 years. Physical examination revealed a 10 cm mass in the lower part of abdomen. Imaging studies, ultrasonography and a CT-scan, showed a large (117 x 58 x 159 mm) cyst in the abdomen. During surgery, a giant small intestine mesenteric cyst was found in the medial and left lower part of the abdomen. The tumour was enucleated and sent for histopathology examination. The cyst contained about 700 ml of a milk-like fl uid. After histopathology tests, lymphangioma was diagnosed. The patient was instructed about the necessity of regular check-ups due to the risk of recurrence. This case confi rms that diagnosis of lymphangioma is usually accidental. In addition, the rarity of this tumour makes the right diagnostic procedure even more diffi cult to achieve.

Opis:
Cereal cyst nematodes (Heterodera spp.) are distributed globally and cause severe production losses of small grain cereals. To investigate the occurrence of cereal cyst nematodes in wheat-growing areas of Algeria, a survey was conducted and 27 cereal cyst nematode populations were collected. The populations were initially identified based on their morphological and morphometric characters, followed by molecular methods using speciesspecific primers, complemented by ITS-rDNA sequences. The morphological and morphometric features of second-stage juveniles (J2s) and cysts supported the presence of three Heterodera species: H. avenae, H. filipjevi and H. hordecalis. All morphological values of these distinct populations were very similar to those previously described for these species. Using species-specific primers for H. avenae and H. filipjevi, the specific bands of 109 bp and 646 bp confirmed the morphological identification of both species, respectively. In addition, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions were sequenced to study the diversity of the 27 populations. These sequences were compared with those of Heterodera species available in the GenBank database (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) and re-confirmed the identity of the species. Nineteen sequences of ITS-rDNA were similar (99–100%) to the sequences of H. avenae published in the GenBank, six sequences were similar (99–100%) to H. hordecalis, and two were similar (98–99%) to H. filipjevi. The results of this study are of great value to breeding programs and extension services, where they will contribute to the design of control measures to keep damaging nematodes in check.

Objective. The aim of this case report is to present a multidisciplinary treatment administered to a patient with a cystic lesion in the jawbone, in the root region of the incisors, caused by trauma. The report also emphasizes the effect of accurate diagnosis and treatment planning on the prognosis of cyst-associated teeth in the presence of large cystic lesions. Case report. A 12-year-old male patient with the maxillary central teeth broken as a result of trauma experienced 3 years ago. In radiographic examination, a round and wide radiolucent area with smooth and distinct borders was observed which included the root of tooth number 11. As a result of the clinical and radiographic examination, it was decided to resect the cyst after consultation with oral and maxillofacial surgery specialists. According to the one-year follow-up results, no pain was felt in the area of the tooth.

The eosin colour test estimating the viability of cysts was compared with the method of in vitro excystation on agar substrate (NNE). Single cysts were studied, isolated from populations stored under sterile conditions in water at 4°C for a period ranging from a few days to 16 years. It has been found that the inoculations of single cysts (805 cysts) on the NNE substrate allow a precise determination of the percentage of living cysts. All the cysts stained with eosin, incubated on such a substrate proved to be dead, while the non-staining cysts ex-cistated with varying percentage. Thus, among the non-staining cysts of Acanthamoeba after 2-4 years of storage at 4°C 89.2% excystated while the remaining ones were dead. After 16 years of storage only 29.8% nostaining cysts excystated. Very similar values (89.6 and 28.5% respectively) were obtained when determining the percentage of living cysts with the colour test. The eosin test has proved to be a good method of the estimation of the viability of cysts of Acanthamoeba.

Both Globodera rostochiensis (Wollenweber, 1923) Behrens, 1975 and Globodera pallida (Stone, 1973) are considered the most economically important nematode pest. Annual regional survey conduct in Poland have revealed high infestation of pathotype Ro1 to the northwest of the country and presence of new pathotype Ro5 of G. rostochiensis. In 2009-2013 fifty eight soil samples were tested. parasitic root organisms cause significant losses in quantity and quality of potato crops. In many European countries PCN have become a major problem in potato production mainly in starch potato cultivars. The pathotype Ro1 was detected mostly in central and northern Poland and pathotype Ro5 in four separated provinces: malopolskie, lubuskie, lubelskie and pomorskie. The abundance of cysts in location where the new pathotype was detected suggests that is a thread of further spread of pathotype Ro5 of G. rostochiensis in the country. Consequently, producers and farmers need to grow resistant potato cultivars to keep nematode population below damaging level. These results indicate the urgent need to prevent the spread of PCN to non-infested areas. This report focused on identification of nematode pathotypes in soil samples from infested polish fields and presentation of G. rostochiensis distribution on territory of Poland.

Three cases of giant, nonparasitic splenic cysts in young patients are presented. The cysts were poorly-symptomatic and manifested with mild upper-abdominal pain and discrete change of abdominal contour. The diagnosis was made based on USG and abdominal CT. Upon operation, the cysts were successfully excised, sparing almost the whole spleen, using standard instruments: electric knife and LigaSure instrument. The postoperative course was uneventful in all cases. At the 4–6-months follow-up, all patients were in good shape and CT showed no signs of recurrence. The results of this case series show that giant splenic cysts may be relatively safely resected, sparing almost the whole spleen.

Opis:
Authors present a case of 54-year-old female treated for intramedullary epidermoid cyst. Patient complained of atypical pain and dysesthesia in lumbosacral region for many years. Patient’s complains increased before admission and were unbearable. Performed clinical and imaging examination revealed intramedullary tumour located in the terminal cone at the level of L2 vertebra. The patient underwent surgical treatment with total tumour removal. Histological examination confirmed epidermoid cyst. Intramedullary location of epidermoid cyst is very rare and constitutes of about 0.7% of all spinal tumours. Due to compression on nervous structures surgical treatment of epidermoid cyst is a method of choice. Authors discuss signs, clinical history, treatment and its results as well as histological findings.

Opis:
In 1997- 1998 the effect of manure, straw and mustard on fungi parasitization of eggs of beet cyst nematode in three years sugar beet rotation was investigated. The highest eggs parasitization by fungi was observed inside cysts from plots with spring barley cultivation and sugar beet as a forecrop. Straw fertilizer favored more fungi parasitization than manure. Three species of nematophagous fungi were isolated from eggs: Cylindrocarpon destructans, Paecilomyces lilacinus and Verticillium chlamydosporium.
Były to: Cylindrocarpon destructans, Paecilomyces lilacinus i Verticillium chlamydosporium.

Opis:
Introduction: Cystic hygromas are very uncommon malformations in adults. In most of the cases, they present as a painless, fluctuant swelling, usually located in the neck region. They tend to grow extensively if not removed. Cystic hygromas can range from 1 mm to several centimeters in size and are filled with clear- to straw-colored fluid. Surgical treatment remains the gold-standard treatment for these tumors. In some cases they can be misdiagnosed with branchial cysts, swollen lymph nodes or other pathologies. When this malformation is present in the prevertebral fascia its surgical treatment is challenging, and some authors advise its conservative treatment, which is in a great risk of its reoccurence. Because of potential malignant transformation in some percentage of branchial cyst cases, a similar situation was suspected. Case report: The present report describes a case of cystic hygroma of the left side of the neck in a 92-year-old female adult and its clinical, radiological and operative features.

Opis:
The sequence of anatomical and ultrastructural events leading to the syncytium development in tomato roots infected with Globodera rostochiensis was examined. The syncytia were preferentially induced in cortical or pericyclic cells in the elongation zone of root. They developed towards the vascular cylinder by incorporation of new cells via local cell wall breakdown. After surrounding primary phloem bundle and reaching xylem tracheary elements syncytia spread along vascular cylinder. Roots in primary state of growth seemed to be the best place for syncytium induction as syncytia formed in the zone of secondary growth were less hypertrophied. At the ultrastructural level syncytial elements were characterized by strong hypertrophy, breakdown of central vacuole, increased volume of cytoplasm, proliferation of organelles, and enlargement of nuclei. On the syncytial wall adjoining vessels the cell wall ingrowths were formed, while the syncytial walls at interface of phloem were considerably thickened. They lacked of functional plasmodesmata and did not form any ingrowths. Using immunofluorescent-labelling and immunogold-labelling methods tomato expansin 5 protein was localized in nematode infected roots. The distribution of LeEXP A5 was restricted only to the walls of syncytia. The protein distribution pattern indicated that LeEXP A5 could mediates cell wall expansion during hypertrophy of syncytial elements.

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) caused by the larval stages of taeniid cestodes of the genus Echinococcus is a neglected helminth zoonosis affecting humans and various animal species. The aim of this study was to assess the fertility of cattle from two provinces in the northeast and southwest of Iran, and molecularly characterize the hydatid cysts collected from them. From 5000 carcasses of naturally infected cattle inspected from October 2013 to December 2015, 70 hydatid cysts were collected in Mashhad in the northeast and 50 from Ahvaz in the southwest. All 120 samples were identified as E. granulosus senso stricto (G1, common sheep strain) by PCR-RFLP analysis and sequencing of the ITS1 gene. All cysts recovered from these animals were sterile, highlighting the lower importance of cattle in the transmission of the “sheep strain”. The fact that that the zoonotic E. granulosus s.s. is dominant makes CE an important public health concern in Iran.

Morphological and molecular diversity among 11 populations of cereal cyst nematodes from different wheat production areas in Morocco was investigated using light microscopy, species-specific primers, complemented by the ITS-rDNA sequences. Morphometrics of cysts and second-stage juveniles (J2s) were generally within the expected ranges for Heterodera avenae; only the isolate from Aïn Jmaa showed morphometrics conforming to those of H. latipons. When using species-specific primers for H. avenae and H. latipons, the specific bands of 109 bp and 204 bp, respectively, confirmed the morphological identification. In addition, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions were sequenced to study the diversity of the 11 populations. These sequences were compared with those of Heterodera species available in the GenBank database (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) and confirmed again the identity of the species. Ten sequences of the ITS-rDNA were similar (99–100%) to the sequences of H. avenae published in GenBank and three sequences, corresponding with one population, were similar (97–99%) to H. latipons.

Opis:
The cell body of centrohelid heliozoans is covered with a layer of scales. These scales have species-specific morphology and, since they present in the trophic stage of the cell cycle can be termed “trophic” scales. Several species are known to form cysts; during this process they can produce specific “cyst” scales, different from trophic scales. The present paper describes morphology of cyst scales in two species of centrohelid heliozoans: Raineriophrys erinaceoides and Raphidiophrys heterophryoidea. The latter species has two types of cyst scales: scales of the first type resemble trophic scales in general structure but, their borders are broad, flattened and not enrolled. Scales of the second type are polygonal and connected to each other by special teeth, forming a single layer organized in a jig-saw puzzle-like manner. In Raineriophrys erinaceoides only one type of cyst scale was found. These scales are polygonal and completely different from trophic scales. It is unclear whether these scales form a puzzle-like layer or just overlap each other. Newly excysted individuals keep remnants of cyst scales in their cell coverings and at this stage cyst scales can easily be noted. The morphology of the cyst scales reported here is unlike any other previously reported.

Breeding sugar beet varieties resistant and tolerant to Heterodera schachtii Schmidt is one of the ways to reduce the occurrence of this pest in soil. Tolerant varieties should have a high value. Yields of roots must be high and of good technological quality. In 2013-2015, the research unit of Nordzucker Polska S.A. together with the Department of Plant Production and Experimentation of the Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology carried out a one-factor field experiment at the village of Błoto, Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, Poland. The purpose of the study was to compare the root yield, the internal technological quality of roots, and the technological yield of sugar from three beet cyst nematode (BCN) tolerant sugar beet varieties: Charly, Perruche, and Sława KWS, and two conventional varieties, grown in fields with a high BCN cyst count (657-1140 cysts 100 g-1 soil). Yields and technological quality of roots during the study period depended on a variety of sugar beet. The tolerant variety Perruche was the highest yielding one in terms of average yields over the whole period. In two out of the three years of the experiment, there was also a significant relationship between the sugar content in beet roots and their variety. In 2013 and 2015, the sugar yield of at least one BCN-tolerant variety, i.e. the varieties Sława KWS and Charly respectively, was significantly higher than the yield of a conventional variety, which was worse in this respect. In 2014, the technological yield of sugar from each tolerant variety was higher than the yield obtained from the conventional varieties.

An epidermoid cyst, approximately 5x5 centimeter in size, bleeding in the form of leakage was observed on the patient's occipital scalp. There was no intracranial pathology in the brain computerized tomography. Wound debridement revealed that the cyst contained approximately 30 live larvae. All larvae were cleaned from the tissue defect. When looking from the outside, the larvae were 8-12 millimeters in size, yellow-white, spiral in shape, and were thought to be compatible with the larva of Lucilia sericata diptera. Myiasis is an ectoparasitic infection of diptera larvae by settling in human and animal tissues. When flies leave their larvae in the tissue, the larvae that invade and develop in that area cause infection. Cutaneous myiasis is the most common clinical form and can be seen on the scalp and cause furuncular myiasis. Immunosuppression, lack of self-care, travel to endemic areas and trauma have been reported as risk factors for myiasis. It was thought that the history of diabetes and old malignancy might be predisposing in our patient. In this case report, it is aimed to present a case of furuncular myiasis that settled down without any trauma to the occiput and presented with spontaneous soft tissue bleeding.

One field trail was carried out in Żydowo in 2015-2016. The cultivation profitability of the five sugar beet varieties tolerant to pest compered to average profitability of three varieties without tolerance was assessed. The number of living eggs and larvae of Heterodera schachtii in field soil was below the harm threshold. The results showed that the cultivation of new tolerant sugar beet varieties on a bed of low pest pressure compared to varieties without tolerance was highly profitable. It was found that the additional cost incurred for the purchase of tolerant varieties in 2015 turned from 4.0 to 7.4 times depending on the variety, whereas in 2016 from 8.4 to 35.3 times, respectively.

Introduction: Detection of the frequency of pancreatic cystic lesions has increased in the recent years. The majority are pseudocysts, the remaining cysts are mainly neoplasms. Proven risk of malignancy affects intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) and mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCN). The aim of this study was to analyze clinical data of patients with pancreatic cysts or pancreatic cystic neoplasms on operate at Department of General and Transplant Surgery in the Barlicki Hospital in Lodz. Material and methods: In 2007-2016, there were 145 patients operated on at the Department of General and Transplant Surgery in Barlicki Hospital in Lodz, due to pancreatic cystic lesion. The type of operation, histopathological diagnosis and basic demographic data were analyzed. Results: Non-neoplastic cyst (mainly pseudocysts) was found in 66.9% of patients, neoplasms were detected in 33.1%. The mean age was significantly higher in patients with neoplasm than without neoplasm (57.06 years vs. 50.88 years, p=0.009). Neoplastic cyst occurred more frequently in women (68.75% of women, 31.25% of men, p=0.001). Malignant tumor was found in 14.58% of neoplasms cases and in 4.83% of all pancreatic cystic lesions. Conclusions: According to the analyzed material, there is a significant risk of malignancy in patients with pancreatic cyst. Neoplastic cysts are more common in women. Discussion: Pancreatic cystic tumors are treated mainly by resections of pancreas. In case of benign lesions with low risk of malignancy, there are less extensive operations performed, such as enucleations of lesions. There are no guidelines that could be used satisfactorily in follow up of patients with pancreatic cysts.

Opis:
The distribution and abundance of dinoflagellate cyst assemblages were investigated in surface sediments from south-western Red sea coasts of Saudi Arabia at six sites during March 2010. A total of 19 taxa of dinoflagellate cysts were identified from all sites. The sampling sites showed a similar cyst assemblage, but they differed in total cyst abundance (3 to 4083 cysts g−1 dry weight). Cyst abundance was strongly correlated with sediment characteristics, the highest numbers being recorded in sediments with large contents of organic carbon, silt and clay. Cyst assemblages were dominated by cysts of potentially toxic species, including Cochlodinium polykrikos, Prorocentrum minimum, Dinophysis acuminata, Alexandrium catenella and Scrippsiella trochoidea. Most cysts germinated successfully at different rates at 15 and 25◦C. This study suggests that surface sediments from all Saudi Red Sea coasts should be monitored for the presence of dinoflagellate cysts to give ample warning of the presence and abundance of toxic species in a given area.

The aim of this paper is to present the case of a 62-year-old man with a sphenoid sinus cyst with skull base destruction. He was admitted to hospital with severe headache, visual disturbance, left ear conductive hearing loss, and loss of weight. The complaints had been increasing over the last two years. The diagnosis of the sphenoid sinus cyst with the sella turcica destruction was established two years ago but the patient refused treatment. On admission, the CT revealed a pathological mass in the left sphenoid sinus (density of 48 HU, size of 33x25x25 mm), causing extensive destruction of its left and upper walls with penetration into the skull. MRI confirmed the presence of a 28x24-mm cyst which was adjacent to the bottom of the sella and did not penetrate to the brain. In addition, the studies revealed chronic sinusitis with polyps. The patient was treated by endoscopic sinus surgery under navigation system. Wide marsupialization of the frontal wall of the sphenoid sinus cyst and removal of the polypoid changes were carried out. Pain subsided after surgery. A control MRI revealed thickening of the mucous membranes of the ethmoid, sphenoid, and maxillary sinuses, and the left mastoid cells. Moreover, no evidence of invagination of the meninges within the operated area was stated.

Opis:
Endometriosis develops in about 10% of women in their fertile age, it is estrogen-dependent and is an important clinical problem. The main symptoms are: chronic pain of the minor pelvis, dysmenorrhea, and dyspareunia, with about 50% of patients being infertile; relapses of the disease are frequent. There are many theories linked to the etiopathogenesis: 1) implantation of the endometrium through salpinges to the abdominal cavity and organs located in the minor pelvis, 2) local immunodeficiency, 3) changes in cellular adhesion and cytokine profile, 4) environmental factors, 5) angiogenesis disorders, 6) genetic predispositions. In our report, we described a case of a patient, age 46, nullipara. The patient’s examination revealed a mass that was palpable in the abdomen and could be felt up to the level of four fingers below the navel. Serum CA-125 was 40.4 U/mL. The ultrasound examination per rectum showed a slightly enlarged uterus with normal endometrium, the right ovary without any pathological changes, and the left ovary changed into a cyst of 15 centimeters in diameter with the superior border not clearly visible. Typical clinical symptoms for endometriosis, like persistent pain in the abdomen, flatulence, bloating, dysmenorrhea, urinary incontinence were not observed in that patient. Surgery was performed in which 1000 mL of fluid were evacuated from the endometrial cyst.
Istnieje wiele teorii związanych z jej etiopatogenezą: 1) implantacja endometrium poprzez jajowody do jamy otrzewnej i narządów miednicy mniejszej, 2) osłabienie układu immunologicznego (głównie lokalnego), 3) zmiany w adhezji komórkowej, profilu cytokin, macierzy komórkowej, 4) czynniki środowiskowe, 5) zaburzenia w procesie angiogenezy, 6) predyspozycje genetyczne. W pracy opisano przypadek 46-letniej pacjentki, nieródki.

Opis:
Pilonidal cyst is a troublesome condition affecting usually young people. It significantly influences quality of life and causes low self-esteem. Despite its known pathophysiology and numerous therapeutic methods available, pilonidal cysts still constitute a significant problem in general surgery. A large number of surgical techniques indicates the lack of a single method that ensures therapeutic success, and frequent complications cause both patient’s dissatisfaction and frustration of the operator. In many cases, therapy is based on methods developed in a given healthcare center and their efficacy is usually not scientifically verified. Search for optimal strategy is also impeded by lack of an unambiguous clinical classification. In this article, we reviewed publications on various methods of managing pilonidal cyst, and we also presented surgical treatment used in our department. However, we did not manage to point out a surgical method with efficacy high enough to become standard treatment. It indicates the need for further search for new techniques that will give chances for successful treatment of pilonidal cyst.

Opis:
A section over 20 m thick of the basal Middle Miocene succession exposed at Lipowiec (Roztocze, SE Poland) was studied for palynology. Thirteen samples were collected from quartz and glauconitic-quartz sands and thin clay layers. Sand samples were barren but clay samples yielded dinoflagellate cysts. Their assemblages consist of reworked Paleogene specimens dominated by the Homotryblium floripes complex (H. floripes and morphologically similar H. plectilum and H. vallum). The presence of reworked Paleogene specimens indicates intense erosion of marine Paleogene strata during initial stages of the Middle Miocene transgression at Roztocze. Analysis of stratigraphical ranges of reworked dinoflagellate cysts and comparison with their occurrences in known epicontinental Paleogene sites of SE Poland suggest an Upper Eocene age of the washed-out strata. The taxonomic composition of the assemblages described suggests that the Upper Eocene deposits accumulated in a near-shore, lagoonal embayment characterized presumably by oligotrophic waters of slightly increased salinity. A high proportion of the Homotryblium floripes complex is also characteristic of reworked assemblages found in younger Miocene strata of neighbouring exposures in Roztocze, which indicates widespread Eocene lagoonal environments in this part of Roztocze. Coeval Eocene strata from the eastern part of Roztocze and from the Carpathian Foredeep show different taxonomic compositions suggesting varied sedimentary settings during Eocene transgression in this region. These differences reflect variable amounts of freshwater influence resulting in a range of environments that ranged from oligotrophic to brackish.

Opis:
The addition of organic material to the soil can be an effective alternative to the environmentally unsafe chemical treatments that are used to control plant parasitic nematodes. We evaluated the effects of vermicompost alone, and aqueous solutions of vermicompost (vermicompost tea) either alone or mixed with urea, on the development and survival of two potato-cyst nematodes: Globodera rostochiensis (pathotype Ro1) and G. pallida (pathotype Pa2) and on the growth parameters of the host potato plants. Soil amendments with these materials significantly decreased the number of cysts · 400 g–1 of both species in the soil, the number of eggs and juveniles · cyst–1 of both species, and the number of eggs and juveniles · g–1 of both species in the soil, relative to the untreated controls. The suppressive effect was significantly higher at the highest dose than the lowest treatment dose, for all tested materials. Globodera rostochiensis was more sensitive to all the tested materials than G. pallida. The aqueous solutions of vermicompost alone or in combination with urea were more effective than the solid vermicompost used alone, for controlling both species. Vermicompost and the vermicompost teas had positive effects on plant fresh stem weight and stem height. The application of vermicompost tea instead of the solid vermicompost, substantially decreased the amount of material needed. These amendments are thus promising for the control of potato-cyst nematodes in sustainable agricultural systems.
