Opis:
Croatia is becoming the 28th member of the European Union on July 1st, 2013. Croatia has gone a long way from a socialist republic to an independent country recognized as one of the economic tigers of the Western Balkans in the first decade of the 21st century. Croatia has been hit by the global crisis, which turned out to be a huge exter-nal shock for the region of the Western Balkans. Although it does not enter the economy through the direct channels, as local banks have not been engaged in toxic assets trade, but indirect channels, like the decrease of FDI, which deepens foreign trade deficits, slow credit growth or decrease of remittance which lead to economic disturbances during the last phase of the European integration process. Small economies, like Croatia, are exposed much more to the effects of any dis-turbances on the international scene. They are dependent on foreign trade and the inflow of FDI, while their demand and inflation rate are affected by the pace of changes in big economies. The article addresses the problem of economic development in the country which needs to deal with a problem of the economic crisis infection and the EU integration process. The article studies the economic situation in Croatia which is the consequence of a recovery plan undertaken by the Croatian government.

Opis:
This text discusses the results of European elections in Croatia. It reaches the conclusion that voters, unhappy with the economic situation, punished the ruling social democratic coalition which suffered a heavy defeat. On the other hand, election results prove the recovery of HDZ, the opposition, centre-right party. It is also obvious that most Croatian citizens do not believe that European elections are important enough to warrant voting. Euroscepticism in Croatia is on the rise because citizens see no obvious benefits from joining the European Union. On the contrary, it is becoming increasingly clear that, in its first year as a member, Croatia will pay more funds into EU budget than it will receive from it. It is evident that direct elections of European Parliament members did not succeed in strengthening EU’s legitimacy in the eyes of Croatian voters, and that European elections are actually of secondary importance.

Opis:
The paper provides a systematic insight into judicial control of Croatian Competition Agency (CCA) decisions in Croatia. Its first part will explain how the applicable model of judicial control and CCA powers were changed over the years. The central part of the paper will be dedicated to the current model of judicial control of CCA decisions, to the powers of the High Administrative Court of Republic of Croatia (HACRC) and to the scope of judicial review in competition cases. In the last part of the paper, the author will present the results of a survey on the most successful and unsuccessful appeal arguments in competition cases before the HACRC in the five year period from 2015 until 2020. In its conclusion, the author will give a critical review of the quality and adequacy of the current model of judicial control in competition cases in Croatia, and will suggest changes that would, in the authors view, result in significant improvements.

21 years of transformation in the tourist function in the territory of Croatia has been summarized in the article. This area has come a long way from the region that was an integral part of Yugoslavia, through the area of warfare related to the civil war to one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world. The number of tourists has more than tripled, with an increase from 57% to 1830% in individual counties of Croatia during the analyzed period. At the same time, there was a disproportionately low increase in capacity of accommodation base across the country at the level of 76%. This increase took values from 20% to 350% in extreme districts.

Opis:
The paper explores and explains the fragmentation process in Croatian local government during the transition period from 1990 onwards. Special focus is given to the emergence of new municipalities (municipal splits/ secessions) that occurred after the new two-tier local government system was established in 1993. Excessive fragmentation of territorial structure at the beginning of the 1990s was a systematic and centrally driven reform that was meant to break with the inherited local government model and break up its territorial structure as radically as possible. While the initial overhaul in 1993 was mostly the result of conscious policy implemented in a top-down manner, subsequent municipal splits were mostly the outcome of local initiatives and lobbying, and were predominantly shaped by local, primarily economic factors, whereas political and cultural factors were of secondary importance. The national institutional context, including criteria and procedural rules for splits, were quite liberal during this whole period, with a moderate tightening-up trajectory. The number of municipalities finally stabilised in 2006, since when there have been no more splits.

The Socialist Republic of Croatia, as one of republics of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, possessed its State Security Service (Služba državne sigurnosti, SDS), equivalent to similar political security services in other communist states. At the Yugoslav level there was also the Federal State Security Service. The State Security of Croatia dealt with both internal and external threats to the communist system and gathered intelligence information. In the early 1980s the State Security of Croatia gathered sizeable amount of information on the events connected with activities of „Solidarity” in the People’s Republic of Poland and the crisis that ultimately led to the imposition of state of war in Poland, as well as reaction to these events in Croatia. The main aim of this paper is to present State Security reports about with Poland in the period between 1980 and 1982.

Performance of resistance in Croatia: A chronotopic review from the 1990s onwardsI follow the performance of resistance in performance art in Croatia from the 1990s – i.e. from the disintegration of Yugoslavia – in correlation with the visibility of the performance of resistance in public spaces, with an emphasis on the individual guerrilla action by Igor Grubić (1998), which is considered the first action and provocation in Croatia of the 1990s that was triggered by civic self-initiative. Due to socialist legacy and the war, it was only in 1998 that an action could occur in Croatia that would be as powerful action in terms of media influence as had been the case in the revolutionary year of 1968 in Yugoslavia with the action Red Peristyle, upon the aura of which Grubić’s Black Peristyle was built. I conclude this review of the performance of resistance in Croatia from the 1990s onwards with the story of Black Nylon Peristyle as the civic performative reaction on the occasion of the accession of Croatia to the EU. Thereby I follow chronotopically the performance of resistance in Croatia between 1998 and 2013 (and partly further, up to and including 2017) with regard to the performative centres, placing the starting and endpoint in Split i.e. Peristyle as the art forum of the performance of resistance in Croatia. Performans oporu w Chorwacji.

Zipf's law is a striking regularity in the field of urban economics that states that the sizes of cities should follow the rank-size distribution. Rank-size distribution, or the rank-size rule, is a commonly observed statistical relationship between the population size and population rank of a nations' cities. The goal of this paper is to test Zipf's law as applied to data for settlements and cities in Croatia using the Census of Population Survey for the year 2011. The results of the analysis have shown that Zipf's law for settlements in Croatia holds true for the majority of the settlement sizes. However, the rank-size distribution does not hold true for extremely small and extremely large settlement sizes. When city proper and urban agglomeration of 127 Croatian cities were examined, Zipf's law was found to hold true only for urban agglomerations. The results of the study are discussed in terms of regional development.

This paper mainly aims to provide in-depth research on how Croatian franchisors utilise the possibilities of the digital environment in terms of their digital presence. The main focus of digital presence analysis is set on franchisors’ official website and supporting communication channels. For research, this paper focused on creating and testing a specialised evaluation model. The proposed model is dominantly based on three applicable models (Martinez & Gauchi, 2010; Rao & Frazer, 2005; Stefanović & Stanković, 2014) and revised according to the situational factors. A redesigned model was used to evaluate websites of Croatian franchisors, mainly focusing on the provided information, website usability, communication possibilities, and promotional activities. This research paper offers two main outcomes. The first outcome is the redesigned evaluation model, which was applied and tested with several provided improvement guidelines. The second outcome is the comparative analysis of the selected Croatian franchisors in terms of their digital presence and its relationship to several market-related indicators. The paper presents a literature review on franchising e-presence worldwide. The research results presented in this paper offer a better insight into the use of websites by Croatian franchisors. Based on their use, certain conclusions can be made. Consequently, a contribution is made to theoretical research about franchising in Croatia and can serve as a framework for further research in the region. Based on the findings of this paper and the information provided by Croatian franchisors about their products and/or services to current and potential buyers, investments in websites result in wider franchising networks and greater success in the market.

Th is paper examines Croatian media pluralism policy in relation to the context of its implementation in a post-socialist Mediterranean media system. Croatian media policy is examined in relation to external, internal, and received diversity at the structural and content levels. In line with this media pluralism policy instruments related to market concentration, media content, di- versity in the types of program functions, genres and ideas in media programs, and public service television regulation as an example of internal structural diversity (Hallin & Mancini, 2004) are being examined. In addition, the analysis of received diversity focuses on the role of media audience in the policy framework. Th e study aims at contributing to the development of the media policy dimension in a comparative media system framework (Humphreys, 2012). To this end it is expected that it will contribute to a better understanding of diff erent policy arrangements in relation to media pluralism in diff erent European countries.

We interviewed 40 inhabitants of 23 villages, mainly knowledgeable informants. On average 19 species were listed, which in total produced an inventory of 95 food plant species (including species whose leaves or inflorescences are used as recreational teas). The most commonly collected are: Sonchus oleraceus and S. asper, Asparagus acutifolius, Dioscorea communis, Cichorium intybus, Crepis zacintha, Allium ampeloprasum, Picris echioides and Foeniculum vulgare (all of them used as vegetables), the fruits of Rubus ulmifolius (mainly eaten raw), the fruits of roses (Rosa sempervirens and R. canina) and the leaves of Salvia officinalis (both roses and salvia are used for making recreational teas). A particular feature of the local gastronomy is the collection of young Ruscus aculeatus shoots.

Weekly menu’s daily meals served in kindergarten groups for children (4 - 6 years old) were analysed and compared with the Croatian Health Care, Hygiene and Balanced Diet Programme for Children in Kindergartens and with Food Plan Standards for Children in Kindergartens - Menus and Standards. The studies were performed in state and privately owned kindergartens in Zagreb, district Maksimir. Results. Except in the serving of dairy products, which were in comparison to the proscribed standard overrepresented, other foods such as grains, fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, pulse were underrepresented. Grains, except in a smaller number of servings, were statistically underrepresented in state owned kindergartens in comparison to the privately owned ones. The largest discrepancy was shown in the low number of fish servings, equally so in the state and privately owned kindergartens. Conclusions. In recent years strides have been made to harmonise menus provided by kindergartens with standards based on scientific research on the prevention of obesity. However, further harmonisation of “old” and “new” foods intended to achieve a more substantial balance of the consumption of certain foods and the adequate amounts of their nutritional values is necessary.

Opis:
The paper studies the morphological variability of the service tree populations in the continental and Mediterranean regions of Croatia. The inter- and intra-population variability, as well as eco-geographic population differentiation, was established on the basis of eight measured morphological characteristics of two types of leaflets (lateral and terminal) and two derived ratios, using descriptive and multivariate statistical methods. The conducted research established a high variability of morphological characteristics. In comparison with lateral leaflets, terminal leaflets showed a higher degree of variability for the majority of the studied variables. The differences between the trees within populations, as well as the differences between populations, were confirmed for all studied characteristics. The study also confirmed a trend of population variations according to the eco-geographic principle. Populations from climatically different and geographically distant habitats, in other words from the Mediterranean and the continental region, differed in the majority of studied characteristics. In addition to the established pattern of ecotypical variability between the continental and the Mediterranean regions, the clinal variability with regard to altitude and mean annual temperature was also confirmed. Small, although statistically significant clinal variability with regard to the longitude was recorded for two measured characteristics. The conducted study provided insights into the variability of the service tree populations in Croatia, which is a basis for further research that should be implemented in order to produce guidelines for the breeding and conservation of genetic resources of this rare and endangered noble hardwood species.

Opis:
Sub-municipal government is an instrument that complements traditional forms of citizen participation and as such contributes to the democratization of the decision-making process on local interests. The main task of sub-municipal government in Croatia is to serve as the consultation and communication mechanism within local units, allowing alternative representation of small communities’ interest, parallel with local councils. However, sub-municipal government has a rather weak position in terms of autonomy, financing, low transparency, size and other. Nevertheless, examples of some Croatian cities demonstrate the democratization potential of sub-municipal government. In this paper, a survey has been conducted in the city of Rijeka (third biggest in Croatia) with questionnaire being send to all of its sub-municipal units. The goal of the survey was to assess which roles sub-municipal units have. The results have shown that the role of sub-municipal local units as activators of local activities is the most developed one. The results are then used to provide guidance for further improvement of sub-municipal system in Croatia.

Obecne wzory postaw, samoorganizacji i działań w sferze społeczeństwa obywatelskiego w Chorwacji są w znacznej mierze wynikiem negatywnych historycznych doświadczeń ostatnich stuleci.

Zostały w nich uchwalone nowe konstytucje, ustawy o partiach politycznych i ordynacje wyborcze. Otworzyły one drogę do konkurencyjnego systemu partyjnego oraz systemu politycznego opartego na zasadach demokracji.
For over a dozen years changes have been taking place in Central and Eastern Europe which are explained in the categories of systemic transformation. “Systemic transformation” is the term most widely used to describe the social change that began in that part of Europe after 1989. A term close, albeit narrower, in meaning is the “political transformation” which describes the phase of radical change of social order in the formal and legal aspect. Analysing the transformation of Central and East European countries one should not disregard the Balkan states. Those states have new constitutions, laws concerning political parties and new electoral statutes. They have opened the road to a competitive party system and the political system based on democratic principles.

W grupie najpopularniejszych czterech parków można zauważyć niepokojącą tendencję do „przeinwestowania” turystycznego. Artykuł wyraża też apel o konieczność pilnego wprowadzenia zasad turystyki zrównoważonej w Chorwacji.
Croatia is visited by over 10 million tourists every year, which is two and a half times as much as its population. The revenue from tourism currently accounts for a quarter of the Croatian GDP. The leading thought of the article is the assumption that tourist attractiveness is based on the unique scenic diversity. Eight national parks were used as examples to discuss natural and scenic values of the main physiographic units. The author compared the frequency of tourist visits to the parks in the last five years. The summary points to the process of expansion of tourist traffic into areas of particular environmental value, increased transportation availability of the most valuable places and threats resulting from increased tourist penetration. The four most popular parks show a disturbing tendency towards tourist “overinvestment”. The article also expresses an urgent need for establishing the rules of sustainable tourism in Croatia.

This paper summarizes recent research activities on merging the geodetic, geologic and neotectonic evidence of geodynamics in Croatia. The area of the City of Zagreb, which is the boundary zone of Eastern Alps, Dinnarides and Pannonian Basin is included as well. It is shown here that the evidence for fractures of Eastern Adriatic differs from the previous hypotheses. This conclusion is derived from the results of various geodetic measurements: satellite positioning (GPS), astro-geodetic measurements of deflections of the vertical. These results are combined with geologic measurements and results of seismic activity studies in order to give more detailed and more accurate picture of the current situation in the tectonically very active region of Dinnarides. Several GPS-campaigns performed in the City of Zagreb area are examined as well. Due to the proximity of Croatian capitol, special attention has been paid to the effects of possible hazard on construction code.

In the Hungarian-Polish Chronicle, written at the turn of the 1230s, one can find a piece of information on Croatia. It is a note on St Paul’s mission in Split, where he allegedly was a Bishop before his travel to Rome, where he found his martyrdom and a story of a Croatian ruler, who was killed by his subjects. The first story used a motif, which was probably popular in medieval Dalmatia, that St Paul was a real apostle of that region. It was Constantin Porphyrogenitus who noted his presence in the context of Adriatic islands and Thomas, archdeacon of Split (Spalato) who argued against this idea. The another story could reflect a tradition of a death of a Great-Moravian ruler, which was mythologized and deprived of a spatial and temporal context. It is interesting that the Hungarians’ raid to their new homeland was presented else as in another sources and in the reality: not from the north-east (Ruthenian territories), but from south (Slavonia). The northern part of Slavonia was nominated Hungary according to the Chronicle, which reflected the geographical and economical unity of Hungarian medieval Kingdom.

Altogether, 209 individuals were collected, of which 114 (54.5%) were males and 95 (45.5%) females. Three colour forms were present in the samples: the non-melanic form succinea and the melanic forms spectabilis and conspicua. The form succinea clearly predominated (90.5% of collected individuals) followed by spectabilis (8.1%) and conspicua (1.4%). The ectoparasitic fungus Hesperomyces virescens, not previously reported from Croatia, was found on the elytron of one H. axyridis individual. The localities in Pelješac Peninsula mentioned in this paper are the southernmost of all Croatian localities so far reported to be colonized by H. axyridis.

The Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Slovenia have shared a common political and economic history for centuries. Slovenia was more developed but was relatively closely trailed by Croatia in basic economic and social indicators as recently as the late 1980s. In the intervening three decades, the economic and social inequalities between Croatia and Slovenia have significantly increased and these two countries are in many ways at opposite ends of the spectrum among the members of the EU. This text acknowledges the traditional explanations of this result—i.e. the negative effect of the Homeland War in Croatia between 1991 and 1995 its human and economic sacrifices which were enormous compared to the very brief and limited conflict in Slovenia; and that Slovenia became a full member of the EU in 2004, whereas Croatia could reap the benefits of EU membership since only 2013. However, this text moves beyond these two arguments and proposes that there are additional explanatory variables for divergent tendencies in economic and social development. It analyses the institutional positions in Croatia and Slovenia (comparing them to the Visegrád countries), the growth models in Slovenia andbCroatia, and the way in which social policy was delivered since the transition in Slovenia and Croatia in order to show that a significant part of the explanation for these downward divergent trendsbin Croatia lies within the way these two main policies were prepared and implemented in those two countries.

Opis:
The authors approach the topic of editing and publishing primary legal-historical sources from the perspective of Croatian legal history as an academic discipline. Based on the earlier texts by Jakov Stipišić and Ivan Filipović, the first part of the text discusses several possible approaches towards the editing and publishing of documents, showing that critical intellectual activity is required already when the initial scope and mode of selecting and preparing the sources is decided upon. As a consequence, editing and publishing priorities are more or less directly connected to the particular interests and general methodological presumptions shared by the archivists, librarians and (legal) historians of a given society. The second part of the text – based on the works of Stjepan Antoljak, Zrinka Nikolić-Jakus, Mladen Ančić and personal insight – is thus dedicated to the most significant or illustrative (either in a positive or a negative way) source-editing and publishing projects on what is today the territory of the Republic of Croatia, in as much as some of them were influenced not only by strictly scientific, but also by political or ideological reasons. Pre-modern as well as modern and recent legal acts and other historical sources, including those typical of popular oral culture, are taken into account here. Finally, the authors reflect on the possible future of great editing projects, fearing that digitalization is only an incomplete answer to the precarious status of humanities and (historic) social sciences.

The issues of nationwide referendum are reflected in the Constitution of Croatia and the Act on Referendum and Other Forms of Personal Participation in the Performance of State Powers and Local and Regional Self-government (Zakon o referendum i drugim oblicma osobnog sudjelovanja u obavljanju državne vlasti i lokalne samouprave). In the present Constitution the rights of Sabor to call a referendum are included in Article 87 (The Constitution of the Republic of Croatia). Three national referendums were held in Croatia: the independence referendum of 1991, Croatian European Union referendum of 2012, and the referendum on the institution of  marriage of 2013. Before 2000 neither the President nor the government called the referendum on the strength of Article 86 of the then binding Constitution. Between 2000 and 2012 no referendum was called as a result of citizens’ initiative.
Kwestie dotyczące referendum znalazły odzwierciedlenie w konstytucji Chorwacji oraz ustawie o referendum i innych formach osobistego udziału w wykonywaniu władzy państwowej i lokalnych oraz regionalnych samorządów (Zakon o referendum i drugim oblicma osobnog sudjelovanja u obavljanju državne vlasti i lokalne samouprave). W obecnie obowiązującej konstytucji uprawnienia Saboru odnośnie do zarządzenia referendum zawarto w artykule 87 (The Constitution of the Republic of Croatia).

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the first extensive archaeobotanical research into a Bronze Age site in Croatia. The aim of the study was to reveal what plants were consumed (grown) at Kalnik-Igrišče (NW Croatia) in the Bronze Age and to realize if the plant diet of the local population differed from that of the inhabitants in neighboring countries. The results show that all plant macrofossils found at Kalnik-Igrišče can be classified into one of four functional groups: cereals, cultivated legumes, useful trees and weeds. As much as 98% of the findings are of cereals and legumes. The most abundant species found are Panicum miliaceum (millet), Hordeum vulgare (barley), Vicia faba (faba bean), Triticum aesti-vum ssp. aestivum (bread wheat), Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccon (emmer wheat) and Lens culinaris (lentils). The findings from Kalnik-Igrišče do not differ from the findings of neighboring countries, indicating that there were similar diets and agricultural/plant-collecting activities throughout the whole of the studied area (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Serbia, Italy, Austria and Hungary).

Memory in action – Performative practices in a dispute about the past: Serbia and Croatia at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuryThe article is an attempt to combine in one reflection the elements of two directions of critical thinking: discursive and performative. The starting point of the analysis is the assumption (derived from beliefs common in pre-performative times) that every space (including a city’s territory) can be treated as a text. This means that both static artifacts and activities in a given space communicate a certain message and can be seen as signs or symbols that refer to something outside of them. Our reflection focuses on practices in which the performative potential is fully revealed and which can be interpreted as a kind of rebellion against the present reality and official policies of memory. The analyzed activities are understood here as symbolic and cultural practices and aim to introduce changes on several levels: to change the historical consciousness of community members; to affect the nuances and expansion of national memory (in this case Serbian or Croatian); to modify the nature of memory. We are interested in interventions that are usually undertaken by persons or groups located on the outskirts of the system of power. Pamięć w działaniu – praktyki performatywne w sporze o przeszłość. Serbia i Chorwacja na przełomie XX i XXI wiekuArtykuł stanowi próbę połączenia we wspólnej refleksji elementów dwóch kierunków myślenia krytycznego: dyskursywnego i performatywnego.

Pollen allergy is characterized by seasonal allergic manifestations affecting patients during the plant pollen season. The aim of this study was to analyze the Betulaceae pollen pattern in Zagreb (2002-2005) and to determine the incidence of sensitization to these pollen types in patients with seasonal respiratory allergy. Twenty-four-hour pollen counts were carried out using volumetric procedure. Skin prick test were performed on a total of 864 patients aged 18-80< in Zagreb between 2 January – 31 December 2004. Pollen of the representatives of the family Betulaceae accounted for a signifi cant proportion of total pollen (34% on an average), predominated by Betula pollen and considerably lower proportion of Alnus sp. and Corylus sp. pollen. Alder and hazel pollen fi rst occurred in the air in February throughout the study period. The highest airborne pollen concentration of these taxa was recorded in February and March. The birch pollen season generally peaked in April. Only 2.67% of patients showed birch pollen monosensitization. The proportion of patients with polysensitization to Betulaceae pollen was considerably greater (12.88%), whereas polysensitization to Betulaceae, Poaceae and Ambrosia pollen was recorded in the highest proportion of patients (26.23%). According to age, the highest and lowest rate of allergy was recorded in the 31-50 and >51 age groups, respectively (46.22% vs 23.12%). Female predominance was observed across all age groups. The patients with monosensitization to birch pollen had the most severe symptoms in April. In the patients with poylsensitization to alder, hazel and birch pollen who developed cross-reaction, initial symptoms occurred as early as February, with abrupt exacerbation in March and April. The most severe condition was observed in the patients allergic to birch, hazel, alder, grass and ragweed pollen, with symptoms present throughout the year and exacerbation in spring and late summer months.

EDIT
Opis:
A small community of Italians lives in Croatia, mainly in the area of Istria and in the city of Rijeka, in a multi-ethnic and multicultural environment of history and tradition. The national Italian community in Croatia has an autochthonous presence and tries to preserve its own national and cultural identity. This is done especially through intense and polyhedral artistic activity, ranging from literature to theatre and music, from painting to sculpture, and from photography to design. In 1952, in order to keep up with the cultural development of this community, the publishing house EDIT (EDizioni ITaliane) was founded. In Croatia and abroad, it publishes and promotes books dedicated to Italian authors from Istria and Rijeka, with a series focused on memoirs; modern and contemporary fiction; poetry; and literature for children and youth. Thus, it supports the literary creativity of the writers living in this area. In order to address childhood, EDIT started a junior series called “La Fionda” in 2005, with the mere intention of pointing out the ludic dimension of books and of rousing the imagination of young readers. This article examines the connection of this series to literature for young readers through the analysis of the works of the authors promoted by “La Fionda,” positioning these authors in the socio-historical environment in which they were working. The series expressly attempted to conduct a linguistic investigation linked to artistic and literary reflections within these publications.

Opis:
Croatia is a country in which tourism plays an important role. It has become an important source of income for its inhabitants, especially on the coast. Tourist values of Croatia predispose it, first of all, to the development of mass tourism. According to Eurostat in 2014 the coast of Croatia granted 63.3 million tourist nights, which makes up 95% of tourist nights in the country. The vast majority of tourists are foreign tourists – they represent 92% of all tourists in Croatia and 96% of tourists vacationing on the coast. The Croatian coast was ranked 4th in Europe, after the Canaries, Paris and Catalonia according to number of nights spend in tourist accommodation establishment (Eurostat Regional Yearbook 2016). Despite such intensive tourist movement in Croatia there are some secluded places, visited only by small number of people. Among the accommodation facilities offered in such places, we can find the so-called “Robinson accommodation establishment”, usually located in remote bays on the islands, isolated from human settlements and located next to the sea. Most of them are houses which were originally small summer cottages or farm buildings located in the vicinity of vineyards and olive groves belonging to the nearby living Croats. Therefore, most of the objects doesn’t have an asphalt road – in most cases there is quite a difficult last stage of trip leading a steep, gravel and very winding road (with a length of even a few km). Moreover, not all facilities are equipped with a electricity (sometimes available only from the generator) or warm tap water (sometimes heated by solar energy). In the article Author discusses the “Robinson accommodation establishment” offer of the Adria Databanka Among all objects to rent, 141 objects (4.3%) are classified as “Robinson accommodation establishment”. These facilities are spread on 11 islands and on one peninsula in Dalmatia. Of these, the largest number of objects 81 (57%) offers the island of Hvar. A smaller number is located on the islands of Brač (27 objects, 19%) and Pašman (12 objects, 9%) and on the peninsula Pelješac (10 buildings, 7%) (Table. 1). In total, they have 1,515 beds in 299 apartments. The largest number of beds in such facilities has Hvar – 1046, which makes up 69% of the total. The size of the offered objects varies from 1 to 12 apartments, in which there are from 2 to 59 beds. The average number of sleeping places is 11 (Tab. 1). One of the main advantages of “Robinson accommodation establishment” (next to the peace and tranquillity associated with isolation) is its location in close proximity to the sea. The average distance between the seas coast and the objects is 44 meters (Tab. 2). Only 10% of facilities are located 100 meters or more from the coast, while 74% of sites are located less than 50 meters from the water. The number of tourists accommodated in “Robinson accommodation establishment” is constantly growing. In 2001 only 12 people used this type of accommodation. In recent years, the number of tourist increased to over 5000. The largest number recorded in 2015 was 5337 people (Fig. 1). Tourists accommodated in “Robinson accommodation establishment” are mostly Czechs (where the headquarter of Adria Databanka is located) – about 2/3 of all tourists. After a dozen or so percent come from neighbouring countries such as Poland and Slovakia. “Robinson accommodation establishment” seem to be a perfect place for people who like to spend their vacations in a warm climate at the azure sea coast, but do not like to rest in the crowd.

Opis:
The article documents the relation of performance art, actions, interventions, happenings, and the democracy of capital for the ruling power through double optics. The first optics constitutes a niche within which art is treated as a crime, as in the case of e.g. the individual guerrilla action Black Peristyle (Crni Peristil) from 1998, the author of which was summoned for interrogation at the Department for Terrorism and War Crimes. The second optics constitutes a niche within the framework of which art engagingly views what is political, what is criminal, what is taking place in this Balkan planetarium of ours – thus demonstrating that personal is (indeed) political – on the example of the independent scene on the one hand (Močvara Club and ATTACK!; I only address the independent scene of Zagreb on this occasion), but also the concept of “Green Democracy” (whereby I used the syntagma by Vandana Shiva) on the example of the activist practice of Animal Friends, as well as the examples of the artistic practice of multimedia artist Ivan Mesek, who also sought to indicate the suffering of animals on the barbed wire (Hungarian-Croatian and Slovenian-Croatian borders). With the aforementioned examples from the niche of animal rights, I sought to document the refugee crisis on the Balkan Route through the optics of equalising speciesism (species-based discrimination) and racism.

The fortress landscape of the Croatian location of Barbariga, being the object of our research is a culture landscape, resultant in the consequence of transformation of a natural seashore into a complex of military defensive works. It has several specific features, which were taken into consideration while creating a simplified graphic method of an open landscape analysis, whose main element of composition is fortress greenery and the fortifications in the form of well preserved, Austrian military buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The conclusions which arise from the conducted analyses concern the problem of reproduction of historical vegetation concealing the military objects, which have lost their original functions. Inconsiderate reconstruction of the greenery may cause the loss of the landscape values.

The article presents application of the new geophysical amplitude data comparison method (ADCM), resulting from integrated geophysical survey using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometry. The ADCM was applied to recognize the horizontal and vertical stratigraphy of a Roman senatorial villa located in Santa Marina (western part of Croatian Istria). The measurements were carried out in 2017−2019 at this site, accompanied by a use of GPR and gradientometer. These two methods significantly differ from each other, but on the other hand, they are complementary to some extent. This is due to the fact that the methods register different types of underground materials. The GPR records electromagnetic waves reflected from real buried remains or boundaries between geological or archaeological layers that differ significantly in electrical properties. The magnetic method, in turn, records the anomalies of the magnetic field intensity resulting from the underground concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, hence it is ideal for searching structures filled with organic matter or burning material. However, a separate usage of these methods does not guarantee a full picture of archaeological structures that are preserved underground. Only the application of the ADCM allowed for a comparison of GPR and magnetic amplitude data reading, following which a spatial image (2D and 3D) of the preserved archaeological structures and the geological stratigraphy of the Santa Maria site were obtained.

Palaeoecological horizons were reconstructed using sedimentological data (organic matter and carbonate content, grain-size distribution and magnetic susceptibility) and the dominance-based malacological results (MZs) supported by habitat and richness charts, moreover multi-variate statistics (cluster analysis). The correlation of the reconstructed palaeoecological horizons with global climatic trends (Marine Isotope Stages) determined the main accumulation processes in the examined areas. The palaeoecological analyses revealed specific accumulation conditions at both sequences, fluvial and aeolian environments at Šarengrad and a possible forest refuge at Zmajevac.

Opis:
Croatia is a country of diverse plant use traditions, which are still insufficiently documented. The aim of this study was to document local traditions of using wild food plants around Lake Vrana (northern Dalmatia, Zadar region). We interviewed 43 inhabitants of six traditional villages north of Lake Vrana. On average 12 species were listed, which in total produced an inventory of 55 food plants and 3 fungi taxa. Wild vegetables were most widely collected, particularly by older women who gathered the plants mainly when herding their flocks of sheep. Wild fruits and mushrooms were rarely collected. The former used to be an important supplementary food for children, or for everyone during times of food shortage, and the latter were relatively rare due to the dry climate and shortage of woods. The most commonly collected plants are wild vegetables: Cichorium intybus, Foeniculum vulgare, Sonchus oleraceus, Asparagus acutifolius, Papaver rhoeas, Rumex pulcher, Daucus carota, Allium ampeloprasum and Silene latifolia.

Pollen concentration in the atmosphere of Vinkovci (northeastern Croatia) has been analyzed using a Hirst-type volumetric spore trap. During the year 2005, 58 pollen types were recorded with the sum of annual totals of 14,011. The pollen spectrum refl ected the fl oristic diversity of the region. Non-arboreal pollen predominantly contributed to the total pollen sum with a percentage of 81.80%. The main pollen producers characterized by allergenic pollen were: Betula, Quercus, Fraxinus, Populus, Pinus, Urticaceae, Ambrosia, Poaceae, Plantago and Artemisia. Urticaceae was the most frequent and most abundant pollen type accounting for 46.58% of the total annual pollen, followed by Ambrosia (19.66%) and Poaceae (11.01%).

Opis:
Due to its geopolitical position on the map of Europe and their military and strategic importance, Croatia inherited countless sites and compounds of defensive architecture dating to various periods of history. An analysis of their placement proves their concentration along the roads and rivers being the trade routes, and in strategic border locations within the country and along the Adriatic coast. The historical heritage of this type is decisive for the specific character of the culturescape in various regions of Croatia. Depending on the circumstances and fitness of individual locations to defensive purposes, the roles and histories of fortifications and areas related to them varied. Research proves that the compounds from the earliest historical periods have been preserved to our times either in the form of archaeological relics or as sites that have long been abandoned and ruined, while the condition of most modern defence facilities has remained relatively good. A separate group among the latter are the fortifications from Austrian times, concentrated along the former border with the Ottoman Empire along the Sava River and on the Adriatic coast. Due to their advantageous situation for defensive purposes, many of them have long retained the continuity of this form of use – unfortunately until our days. Due to the changing requirements of defensive arts and the introduction of new defensive positions paralel to the development of offensive techniques and also for other reasons, with the passage of time, most facilities underwent major changes pertaining primarily to their form and structure. With the reduction of the military functions, some facilities were abandoned, which would result in continuing destruction. Others would for a long time remain in the custody of military authorities, and are now being adapter to new functions. The major political, economic, social and other processes of the last decade have brought plenty of profound changes in various areas of life. They resulted in the increased need for introducing basic changes in the forms of use and management, and the means of supervising post‐military culturescape. The subject embarked upon here is an attempt to define the scope of problems related to such areas, and the formulation of plans for their adaptation to contemporary functions in the new political and economic conditions. The subject of research is the selected facilities developed in the Dual Austro‐Hungarian Empire that – being now devoid of the leading military function – may not only complement and expand the tourist offer related to cultural heritage at the same time support the creation of a strategy for social and economic development and improvement of living conditions in the areas of specific post‐military landscape. The material presented here makes it possible to evaluate the level of preservation of the assets of the individual post‐military landscape, the definition of their role for the value and resources of culturescape and the presentation of various concepts of adjusting them to new functionalities. Worth special attention among numerous such cases are the civil initiatives, plans, designs, and projects focused on the areas of post‐military landscape of Pula, the city whose urban development continued to be subjected to its military functions for the last two centuries.

Opis:
This paper presents pedological research in Žutica forest in northern Croatia. The most common soil types found in this area belong to the hydromorphic class (Pseudogley, pseudo- gley-gley, eugley, fluvisol) except technogenic soils formed as a result of intensive oil exploitation. Some main chemical and physical characteristics of soils are given. For forest productivity the most productive combination of soils are hypogley and pseudogley-gleysol and minimal productivity is in heavy amphygleic soils. An increase of heavy metals occurs in flooded soils in Žutica from nearby agricultural land. A high concentration of active phosphorus, and nitrogen can verify the influence of field fertilisers on the forest. Levels of cadmium found in technogenic soils exceed the permitted concentration. A large amount of CaCO3 in relation to natural forest soils can be found in technogenic soils because of quick lime disposal after oil spills and also pH increase and a nutrition and humus decrease.
