The paper is concerned with the documentary novel by Svetlana Alexievich which describes one of the biggest technological humanitarian disasters of the 20th century: the catastrophic accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The attention is focused on the portraiture of the soviet man – of the heroes of the event, who survived the catastrophe but have been left without any help from the institutions and people they had relied on: the government and the country. The book provides the testimony of the witnesses: in this polyphonic form Alexievich lets them speak for themselves. The victims of the disaster have paid the highest price: they have lost everything – their lives, their relatives and hopes for the future.
Статья знакомит с образом советского человека, который выдвигается на первый план в документальном романе белорусской писательницы. Это роман-исповедь, построенный как собрание интервью, в котором С. Алексиевич дает высказаться свидетелям и участникам самой большой техногенной катастрофы ХХ века. В статье затрагивается проблема советского человека, который является героем этих трагических событий, хотя чувствует себя одиноким, забытым и заброшенным в этом героизме людьми, учреждениями, на которых надеялся: властью, государством. В статье излагается вопрос цены, которую пришлось заплатить людям, живущим в так называемой зоне, которые вследствие катастрофы потеряли все: свою жизнь близких и веру в будущее.

Greckie terminy παρρησία i παρρησιάζομαι nabrały wielkiego znaczenia w Atenach w VI w. przed Chr. Określano nimi prawo wolnego obywatela do przemawiania na Zgromadzeniu Ludowym. Był on zobowiązany do mówienia prawdy nawet za cenę prześladowania. Pojęcia te funkcjonowały również w sferze prywatnej i w filozofii. Chętnie korzystali z nich autorzy Pisma Świętego (w Dz występują 11 razy). W rozdziale dziewiątym Dziejów Apostolskich św. Łukasz za pomocą czasownika παρρησιάζομαι opisuje postawę nawróconego Szawła, który głosi słowo Boże w Damaszku i Jerozolimie. Pomimo trudności, jakie się pojawiają, niczego nie zmienia w orędziu Ewangelii. Παρρησία jest charyzmatem, którym obdarowuje człowieka Duch Święty. Jego działanie jest kluczowe dla właściwego zrozumienia powyższych terminów w Dziejach. Dzięki Niemu παρρησία nie jest już przywilejem jedynie wolnych obywateli jak w starożytnych Atenach, ale łaską, która nawet prostych i nieuczonych ludzi uzdalnia do odważnego i śmiałego mówienia o Chrystusie.
The Greek terms of παρρησία and παρρησιάζομαι assumed great importance during the 6th century BC in Athens. These words defined the right of a free citizen to speak at the General Assembly. He was obligated to tell the truth, even at the expense of persecution. These concepts also functioned in the private sphere and in philosophy The authors of the Holy Scriptures eagerly used them. They occur eleven times in the Acts of the Apostles. St. Luke uses παρρησιάζομαι as a verb in chapter 9 of Acts to describe the attitude of the converted Saul who preaches the word of God in Damascus and Jerusalem. Despite the difficulties which arise, he does not change anything in the Gospel message. Παρρησία is a charisma bestowed upon man by the Holy Spirit. The action of the Holy Spirit is crucial to a proper understanding of the above terms in Acts. Because of this action, παρρησία is no longer the privilege of free citizens only, as in ancient Athens, but a grace that enables even simple and unlearned people to speak boldly and courageously about Christ.

The article focuses on the analysis of the reconstruction of the psychological landscape of Lviv during World War II found in Ola Hnatiuk’s Courage and Fear. The main theme of the book is the story of intelligentsia in Lviv under the Soviet and the Nazi occupations. The author has analyzed some aspects of the book that appear as a precise ‘case study’ of the impact of the phenomenon of fear on the lives of individuals and communities under extreme conditions.

Artykuł dotyczy zasady ostrożności. Celem tekstu jest jej zdefiniowanie, interpretacja oraz powiązanie z polityką gospodarczą. Punktem wyjścia jest stwierdzenie istnienia niepewności sensu largo oraz naukowej niepewności sensu stricte. Te elementy sprawiają, że we współczesnej, coraz bardziej zglobalizowanej gospodarce pewne zagrożenia nabierają charakteru systemowego. Konieczne jest unikanie tego rodzaju niebezpieczeństw, jednak istniejące narzędzia analityczne konstruowane w ramach teorii decyzji czy zarządzania ryzykiem są do tego niewystarczające. Stwarza to przestrzeń dla zasady ostrożności, która w zależności od specyfiki sytuacji decyzyjnej przybiera postać heurystyki strachu bądź heurystyki odwagi.
The main goal of the article is to deliver a definition, interpretation and a potential application of precautionary principle in the field of political economy. Uncertainty in general, and scientific uncertainty in particular make a contemporary, increasingly globalized economy much more vulnerable. On the top of that, the very nature of certain risks is changing from local to systemic. It is necessarry to avoid such threats, but the existing risk management tools are insuficient and/ or inadequate to do so. Such a situation creates a potencial space for a concept of precautionary principle which, depending on the nature of decision, manifest itself as a heuristics of fear or as a heuristics of courage.

The Holocaust of the Garden – The Garden of the Holocaust? Antony Lishak: Stars: A Story of Friendship, Courage, and Small, Precious Victories. [no place], Acorn Digital Press, 2014, pp. 279.In her review, the author makes an attempt of an analysis of Antony Lishak’s novel – Stars… – from a post‑anthropocentric perspective. The book of a British writer, addressed to a young reader, is shown in the background of other literary and movie works inspired by the remarkable history of the Warsaw Zoo and its inhabitants during the Second World War, such as: Ludzie i zwierzęta by Antonina Żabińska, The Zookeeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman and a movie with the same title directed by Niki Caro, or Arka Czasu… by Marcin Szczygielski. Among these works is the autobiography of Antonina Żabińska, the wife of the director of the zoo, who on the pages of Ludzie i zwierzęta outlined the truly subjective portraits of animals, ahead of the theoretical concepts of ecophilosophers and ecocritics. By means of constructing parallel images of suffering (people in a ghetto and animals in the zoo) as well as the empathetic attitude of Stars’ child heroes, Antony Lishak seems to follow the path of Antonina Żabińska in his novel; however, the inconsistencies indicated by the author in the structure of narration cause the demands of posthumanism, surprisingly close to the child’s perspective, being unfulfilled. In a narrative project of consolation, the comfort is achieved only on the anthropocentric plane.

Postać Profesora z Płocka zostaje ukazana w świetle podkreślanych w formacji kapłańskiej czterech wymiarów życia: ludzkiego, duchowego, intelektualnego i duszpasterskiego.
Fr. Prof. Ireneusz Mroczkowski was one of the well-known and recognized people of the city of Płock, the diocese of Płock, and the Polish academic world. The aim of the article is to show the ideological path of this priest, moral theologian, lecturer, social activist, and member of the Scientific Society of Płock. The figure of the Professor from Płock is shown in the light of the four dimensions of life emphasized in priestly formation: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral.

Mass Observation was founded in 1937 to collect subjective, qualitative data on everyday life in Britain, and has continued to record the ordinary and the everyday ever since. Mass Observation’s purpose has always been to make the data it collects available to a range of disciplines to apply their own methodological approaches upon, resulting in data that can be reused within different projects and disciplines. This paper will use Mass Observation as a case study to illustrate how a sociological shift in attitude towards subjective data has played out in the use of a dataset traditionally viewed as a historical archive.  I will review how the data itself is used to define and design methods of analysis, examining the epistemological implications of this approach to research design and the new dimension to the researcher-data subject relationship that is introduced. I will conclude by suggesting that research using Mass Observation exemplifies the methodological opportunities and insights that can be gained by adopting a broader, multi-disciplinary research approach to reusing data.

Papież Franciszek w swoim liście „Patris corde”, opisując sylwetkę św. Józefa, używa określenia „twórczej odwagi” mówiąc, że „Ujawnia się ona szczególnie wtedy, gdy napotykamy na trudności. W obliczu trudności można bowiem zatrzymać się i zejść z pola walki, lub jakoś coś wymyślić. Czasami to właśnie trudności wydobywają z każdego z nas możliwości, o posiadaniu których nawet nie mieliśmy pojęcia”. Odbiorcę tekstu może zaintrygować to połączenie twórczości i odwagi. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest odnalezienie przejawów twórczej odwagi w życiu Józefa z Nazaretu. Dokonuje się tego w kilku wymiarach: w odwadze bycia sprawiedliwym, w odwadze składania ofiary z siebie i bycia sługą, w odwadze bycia ojcem, w odwadze bycia świętym, w odwadze do życia w czystości małżeńskiej. Analiza postaci św. Józefa w wymienionych kontekstach może posłużyć jako wzór dla współczesnych mężczyzn realizujących swoją męskość oraz pełniących rolę męża i ojca.
In his apostolic letter Patris Corde, Pope Francis uses the term “creative courage” in describing the profile of St. Joseph, saying that it “emerges especially in the way we deal with difficulties. In the face of difficulty, we can either give up and walk away, or somehow engage with it. At times, difficulties bring out resources we did not even think we had”. The recipient of the text may be intrigued by this combination of creativity and courage. Hence, the aim of this study is to discover the manifestations of creative courage that appear in several dimensions in the life of Joseph of Nazareth: the courage to be righteous, to sacrifice oneself and be a servant, as well as the courage to be a father, to be holy, and to live in marital chastity. The analysis of the figure of St. Joseph in the aforementioned contexts, may serve as a model for modern men realizing their masculinity and fulfilling the role of husband and father.

The article is devoted to the issue of responsible parenthood, which was formulated in the encyclical Humane Vitae by Paul VI in 1968. The content of the encyclical referred primarily to the issue of responsibility arising from fertilization. The author of the article relates the issue of parental responsibility to the care of a child with mild mental disability. Parental childcare is a consequence of calling the child to live. The author of the article analyses the issue of responsible parenting from the philosophical perspective and thus focuses on the recognition of the world of values by the parent-guardian of a person with intellectual disability. Close relationships with such a person require special spiritual, moral, and axiological sensitivity. The author of the article, in addition to the encyclical Humane Vitae, has been inspired by the reflections of Jean Vanier and Julia Kristeva on disability, resulting from two religious and secular perspectives.

The article attempts to analyse and interpret the man’s behaviour (actions) in different situations of threat and in different historical epochs. These are behaviours which can be described as heroic, courageous, valorous and dauntless, aimed at defending other people and bringing help at the risk of endangering one’s own life and health. The similitude between anxiety and death is the starting point of Paul Tillich's analysis from The Courage To Be, his famous theological and philosophical reply to Martin Heidegger's Being And Time. Not only Tillich and Heidegger are concerned with the connection between anxiety and death but also other proponents of both existentialism and nihilism like Friedrich Nietzsche, Emil Cioran and Lev Shestov. Tillich observes that "anxiety puts frightening masks" over things and perhaps this definition is its finest contribution to the spectacular phenomenology of anxiety. Moreover, Tillich has some illuminating insights about the anxiety of emptiness and meaninglessness, which are important for the history of the existential philosophy. It is interesting how the protestant theologian tries to answer to Heidegger: while the German philosopher asserted that we must avoid fear and we have to embrace anxiety as a route to personal authenticity, Tillich notes that we should transform anxiety into fear, because courage is more likely to "abolish" fear.

Opis:
Michel Foucault defined parrhesia as “the free courage by which one binds oneself in the act of telling the truth.” Could telling objective untruth also be a parrhesiastic act, insofar as it requires courage and initiates subjectivation? Climate deniers, anti-vaccinationists and other groups that delegitimize the authority of science present themselves as courageously standing up against the dominant discourse, as rebellious subjects who speak the inconvenient and unaccepted truths. It is not difficult to prove that their truths are untruths, but it remains problematic to distinguish true courage from its simulacra. This article argues that Foucault’s investigations of truth, subjectivity, and power become of great use in the face of today’s confusion. The phenomenon of post-truth cannot be explained simply as the product of postmodern relativism. The will-to-truth, along with the will to constitute oneself as a truth-telling subject, persists, requiring critical analysis more than ever. What may prove politically efficient is to engage in the kind of critique that would account for actual power relations and unmask false courage rather than debunk specific concepts or ideas.
