Opis:
Process improvement and kinetic study on copper leaching from low-grade cuprite ores in sulfuric acid solution are presented in this paper. Effects of major leaching parameters on copper leaching efficiency are determined. The results indicate that copper minerals in the raw ores are mainly cuprites. The reaction rate of this ore increases with an increase in temperature, reaction time, sulfuric acid concentrations and decrease in the particle size of ore. Leaching of about 92.5% of copper is achieved using 0.125-0.074 mm ore particle size at a reaction temperature of 353 K for 180 min reaction time with 150 g/dm3 sulfuric acid. The solid/liquid ratio was maintained constant at 1:15. Leaching kinetic indicates experimental data complies with shrinking core mode (SCM). It is found in the study that agitation rate is not an influential factor on leaching rate and that the dissolution rate is controlled by surface chemical reaction. The average activation energy of the process is determined to be 45.28 kJ mol-1, and the reaction order of H2SO4 is 0.8093.

Opis:
In the presented work, possibilities of intensification of copper leaching from chalcopyrite CuFeS2 induced by mechanical activation was studied. In this article, the influence of mechanical activation time on copper leaching efficiency is compared. This study also shows how mechanical activation time influences selectivity of copper and iron leaching. For mechanical activation, planetary mill Fritsch Pulverisette 6 at 400 rpm and room temperature was used. Grinding chamber (250 cm3 in volume) and 50 balls (10 mm in diameter) made of tungsten carbide were used. Specifically, the effect of mechanical activation time (4, 20, 30 minutes), the effect of temperature (40, 60, 80°C) on the copper recovery by leaching and the effect of the leaching atmosphere (air, argon) were examined. The results showed that the highest possible recovery of copper from chalcopyrite was obtained after 20 minutes of milling and leached in hydrochloric acid at 80°C, with air atmosphere without any oxidizing reagents.

Opis:
The use of radiotracers in the present study is intended to replace traditional steps of metal quantitative analysis (solution sampling and instrumental chemical analysis) and to allow real-time measurements of metal concentrations during the leaching process. In this study, 64Cu, an isotope of copper, was selected as a radiotracer. Samples of copper flotation tailings were irradiated in the Maria research reactor (Świerk, Poland) and mixed with an inactive portion of the milled flotation waste. The leaching process was carried out in a glass reactor, and the radiation spectrum was measured using a gamma spectrometer. The material was then treated using various acids (sulphuric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, citric acid, and ascorbic acid) in a wide range of their concentrations. Experiments with the radiotracer were conducted in sulphuric and nitric acids. The amount of the leached metal (copper) was calculated on the basis of the peak area ratio in the gamma-ray spectrum of the activated tailings and standard samples. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was also used to analyse the metal content. Maximum recovery of 56% Cu was achieved using 9 M HNO3, whereas the recovery was lowest for ascorbic acid (1%). Both analytical methods were compared, and the results presented in this paper are in good agreement with radiometric measurements obtained using ICP-MS analysis.

Opis:
In this research cyanide-free leaching of pure gold and pressure oxidized refractory gold concentrate by thiosulfate-copper-ammonia solutions were examined. A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) was used to study gold leaching as a factorial series where the best gold leaching rate (2.987 mg/(cm2∙h)) was achieved with a solution consisting of 0.2 M (NH4)2S2O3, 1.2 M NH3, 0.01 M CuSO4 and 0.4 M Na2SO4. Temperature had the greatest effect on the gold leaching rate. An increase in thiosulfate concentration (0.1–0.2 M) increased gold dissolution. The combined effect of temperature and ammonia concentration had a statistically significant effect on the gold leaching rate at 0.1 M M2S2O3. Combination of applied potential and NH3:S2O3 ratio had a statistically significant effect on the gold leaching rate at 0.2 M M2S2O3. An increase in applied potential decreased the gold dissolution rate at low ammonia concentrations but increased it at high concentrations. A pressure oxidized gold concentrate was leached for 6 hours in the batch reactor leaching experiments. The effect of rotative velocity (1.26–1.56 m/s) and slurry density (10–30 wt%) was investigated at the following leaching parameters: 0.2 M Na2S2O3, 0.6 M NH3, 0.01 M CuSO4, 0.4 M Na2SO4. Lower slurry density (10 wt%) resulted in a higher Au leaching efficiency. An increase in the rotation rate did not have an effect on the final Au leaching recovery. The best Au leaching efficiency (89%) was achieved with 590 rpm mixing, 1.56 m/s rotative velocity and 10 wt% slurry density.

Several copper extractants have been examined in laboratory glassware with a special attention paid to their behavior towards cations others than copper(II). In the studies 25 vol. percent of hydrocarbon (Exxsol D80 AZ) solutions of six industrial copper extractants have been used. They were mainly rea-gents of hydrooxime type (LIX 860N-IC, LIX 984, LIX 984N, LIX 84-I, Acorga M5640) and diketone type LIX 54-100. Individual isotherms of independent extraction of copper(II) and selected cations (Fe3+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Mg2+) versus equilibrium pH have been compared. Investigations have been conducted with synthetic 0.1 mol/L solutions of their sulfates. The values of pH50% − parameter defined as an equilibrium pH at the moment of half-and-half extraction of the investigated cationic spe-cies have been presented. Also ΔpH50%, that is differences between values of pH50% for specific cation Me(II) and copper(II): ΔpH50% = pH50%(Me) − pH50%(Cu), have been given. In addition to that 25% LIX 984 has been used in counter-current pilot trials for copper(II) extraction from naturally contaminated solutions produced by bioleaching of industrial sulfide copper concentrate to observe behavior of investi-gated contaminants such as correlations between their real co-extraction with copper(II) and the position of their extraction on the pH scale. Copper electrolyte/strip solution, working alternately within close loop of coupled stripping - electrowinning system, has been analyzed during consecutive cycles to observe building up of the contaminants concentrations in the course of test.

Opis:
Scientific objective of this work was elaboration of radiometric method for the development of hydrometallurgical process for recovery of Cu from the copper ore. A neutron activation analysis (NAA) was identified as a very convenient tool for the process investigation. The samples of copper ore were activated in a nuclear reactor. The parameters of the neutron activation were calculated. Radioisotope 64Cu was selected as an optimal tracer, and it was used for the investigation of the leaching process. During the experiments, various processes applying leaching media such as sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and organic acids were investigated. The recovery of the metals using sulphuric acid was insufficient, around 10%. Investigated organic media also did not meet expectations. The best results were obtained in experiments with nitric acid. Up to 90% of Cu and other metals were extracted from the copper ore. Copper concentration calculations obtained by NAA were confimed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique. Both techniques gave comparable results, but the advantage of the NAA is a possibility for easy online measurements without shutting down or disturbing the system.

Opis:
Copper oxide ore was pre-concentrated using near infrared sensor-based method and classified as product, middling and waste. The product and middling fractions were leached with ammonium chloride reagent. The effect of temperature, ammonium chloride concentration, solid- liquid ratio, stirring speed and particle size experimental variables were investigated. Mineralogical and chemical analysis of the ore fractions indicated that copper content was in accordance with the preconcentration strategy, with the product having a higher concentration than the middling and waste. The rate of copper extraction was found to be higher in the product than in the middling sample which further supports the near infrared classification, QEMSCAN®, X-ray diffraction, SEM mineralogical and X-ray florescence and Inductively coupled plasma Mass spectrometry chemical data. It was revealed that the leaching rate increases with increasing ammonium chloride concentration, temperature and decreasing ore particle size, stirring speed and solid-liquid ratio. Analysis of the experimental data by shrinking core model indicated that the dissolution kinetics follow the heterogeneous reaction model for the chemical control mechanism where the activation energies of 45.9 kJ/mol and 47.5 kJ/mol for product and middling fractions respectively were obtained. Characterization of the residue obtained at optimum leaching condition with X-ray diffraction suggests that copper was selectively leached when compared to the profile of the raw ore. The trace levels of metals associated with abundant X-ray diffraction profiles of residue found in the leachate further confirm the selective leaching process.

Treating chalcopyrite flotation concentrates by hydrometallurgical techniques seems to be the most convenient method for leaching copper due to concerns over air pollution and regulations regarding the emission of sulfur dioxide that result from smelting. In this study, the leaching recovery-time trajectories of bulk chalcopyrite concentrate obtained from a flotation plant in the Kastamonu region of Turkey are presented. The effects of various parameters were elucidated in the nitrous-sulfuric acid electrolyte (CNaNO2:0.05 M–0.15 M, CH2SO4:1 M) at a moderate temperature (80–120 °C). A high level of copper recovery (98%) from bulk chalcopyrite concentrate was obtained under a total pressure of 6 atm at 120°C within 2 h when using small amounts of nitrite species due to their autocatalytic behavior in acidic solutions. The kinetics were well correlated with the shrinking core model for the diffusion controlled mechanism with an apparent activation energy of 34.06 kJ·mol–1. Elemental sulfur was the primary leaching product on the mineral surface, as confirmed using XRD and SEM/EDX. The semi-empirical equation explaining the reaction rate under the present conditions was expressed as follows: ...[wzór].

The progress of civilization brings with it the development of advanced technologies and increased demand for electric and electronic equipment. That directly influences the increase of produced e-waste, called Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Due to the fact that deficit and critical metals are running out throughout the World, and due to increased demand for those metals, their alternative source and recovery methods have to be found. As an alternative biotechnological methods can be used. The advantage of biological methods over chemical processes is its selectivity in regard to different metal groups, simplicity of technological process, economic effectivity (lower energy expenditure) and lack of negative impact on environment. The aim of this work was to compare the effectiveness of biological and chemical leaching of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) from circuit boards (PCBs).The experiment was conducted in variants which included factors such as temperature (24°C and 37°C) and speed of mixing. In case of all metals higher effectiveness was achieved in variants conducted in the temperature of 24°C and faster mixing than in temperature of 37°C and slower mixing. In case of cooper and zinc better results of metal removal were achieved in bioleaching variant. In case of nickel faster result of metal removal were achieved in chemical leaching, but at the end of the experiment the effectivity of chemical leaching and biological leaching was similar. The maximum efficiency of cooper, nickel and zinc release was adequately 100%, 90%, 65%.

Recovery of silver and lead by means of chloride leaching of solid residue after atmospheric leaching of the copper concentrate from Lubin Concentrator (KGHM) was investigated. The effect of leaching temperature, chloride concentration, Fe(III) and oxygen presence, solid-to-liquid ratio and feed preleaching with NaOH on the silver and lead recovery was analyzed. Chloride leaching appeared to be very effective for recovery of lead, whereas satisfactory recovery of silver was observed after chemical pretreatment of the leaching feed with alkali solution of NaOH in order to liberate Ag entrapped in the jarosite structure. It was found that to achieve the satisfactory recovery of Ag and Pb leaching had to be performed in acidified 4 M chloride concentration at temperature of 90 oC. The presence of oxidants, that is O2 and iron(III) ions, was beneficial in the initial stage of the process. The maximum recovery of Ag and Pb was found for the solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10 after 10 hours leaching.

Hydrometallurgical recovery of silver from a solid residue after pressure leaching of a flotation copper concentrate from the Lubin Concentrator (KGHM Polska Miedz S.A.) was investigated. Thiosulphate leaching was examined with regard to the highest possible leaching efficiency and optimization process parameters. The effect of thiosulfate ions concentration within the range from 0.25 to 1.00 mol/dm3 at a constant ammonia concentration, and ammonia concentration within the range from 0.40 to 1.00 mol/dm3 at a constant thiosulfate concentration on leaching recovery of selected metals were examined. Moreover, the effect of copper(II) ions addition on silver leaching was studied. It was shown that the leaching recovery of silver increased with increasing thiosulfate and ammonia concentration. At the highest thiosulfate ions concentration, the observed silver leaching recovery was 60%. The best results were obtained at an ammonia concentration of 0.80 mol/dm3, where the leaching recovery of Ag reached 75%. It was established that addition of Cu(II) did not affect silver leaching. Nearly 100% efficiency of thioslulohate silver leaching was achieved by pretreatment of the solid residue after pressure leaching with NaOH solutions.

Opis:
This study was undertaken to improve gold and silver extraction from a pyritic gold flotation concentrate, which assayed 11 g/t Au, 42 g/t Ag, 0.21% Cu, 3.57% Zn, and 31% Fe. Direct cyanide leaching of the concentrate at 1.5 g/L NaCN yielded a low gold extraction (37%), confirming its refractory nature. Effects of lead nitrate (200-500 g/t Pb(NO3)2) and pre-aeration (24 h) before cyanide leaching at 1.5-3.5 g/L NaCN were investigated. Earlier studies have focused on the impact of these parameters on gold leaching. Besides gold, this study demonstrated the behaviour of silver and base metals (copper and zinc) from the pyritic gold concentrate. Adding lead nitrate had a negligible effect on gold extraction whilst improving silver extraction. Dissolution of copper was substantially suppressed by adding lead nitrate, i.e., from 23% (no Pb(NO3)2) to 4% (500 g/t Pb(NO3)2) over 24 h. Zinc dissolution was negligible (≤0.01%). Pre-aeration of the concentrate improved the gold and silver extractions by 4-14% and 23-44% at the subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5-3.5 g/L NaCN). However, it did not affect the leaching of copper. Only negligible leaching of zinc (≤0.6%) occurred during cyanide leaching. Pre-aeration also reduced cyanide consumption in subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5 g/L NaCN), i.e., from 2.83 kg/t to 2.03 kg/t NaCN per solids. These results suggested that lead nitrate can improve silver extraction while suppressing copper dissolution, which would be advantageous in the leaching-adsorption circuit (CIP), mitigating the dissolved copper-associated problems. Pre-aeration can also be suitable for improved gold/silver extractions and reduced reagent consumption.

Opis:
In this work extraction of copper and iron from a reverberatory furnace slag was studied. A two-step extraction procedure was followed. The first step was roasting of the slag in the presence of sulphuric acid at temperatures between 150 and 800oC. The second step was leaching of the resulting calcine with distilled water. The maximum copper extraction of about 94% was achieved. In this case, the slag was roasted at 250oC with sulphuric acid higher of about 33% than that stoichiometrically required, followed by water leaching of calcine at 50oC. About 55% of iron was also dissolved under these conditions. On the other hand, for the calcine obtained at sulphation temperature of 600oC, extraction of copper in a water leaching stage was still relatively high (about 79%), whereas that of iron was comparatively low (about 6%). Dissolution of copper and iron from the calcine was found to be very fast and was complete within the first few minutes. The water temperature in the leaching step was found to have no effect on extraction of copper and iron from the calcine in the range of 30 to 85oC.

Opis:
The rapidly declining quality of ores and concentrates produced by Lubin Concentrator (KGHM) makes the flotation concentrates exceptionally difficult-to-process by flash smelting. Currently, a hydrometallurgical process, using sulfuric acid with the presence of oxidants as a leaching medium, seems to be either a reasonable alternative or a complementary option to pyrometallurgy. The unique lithological, mineralogical and chemical properties of the concentrate were considered in a selection of the process route. Results of a pressure leaching of the copper sulfide concentrate from Lubin Concentrator (ZWR Lubin) with oxygenated aqueous H2SO4 solutions are presented. The effect of temperature from 120 to 200 °C, initial concentration of H2SO4 from 60 to 100 g/dm3, and oxygen partial pressure ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa were investigated. The pressure leaching appeared to be an efficient process for recovering copper from the Lubin concentrate. At optimal leaching conditions (140 °C, 100 g/dm3 H2SO4, 1.0 MPa O2) 96% of Cu was extracted after 4 h.

Opis:
In this research, the high arsenic content dust of copper smelting, as a raw material, the extraction of copper and arsenic from the high arsenic content dust in the leaching system containing acidic and alkaline compounds was investigated. Meanwhile, the effects of acid/alkaline initial concentration, liquid to solid ratio, leaching temperature, leaching time on the leaching rate of copper and arsenic were studied. The optimum conditions for the leaching of high arsenic content dust and preparation of copper arsenate were determined. The results showed that acidic/alkaline leaching of high arsenic content dust was particularly effective. 93.2% of the copper, and 91.6% of the arsenic were leached in an acidic leaching process and 95% of the arsenic, while less than 3% of the copper, less than 5% of the antimony, less than 2% of the bismuth was also leached in an alkaline leaching process. A new method (the parallel flow drop precipitate method) was developed in the synthesis of copper arsenate process. The parallel flow drop method was employed to adjust the molar ratio (copper to arsenic) of the mixed solution of the acid-leaching solution and the alkali-leaching solution by taking the drop acceleration of an acidic leaching solution and an alkaline leaching solution at 10 mL/min and 12 mL/min, at a temperature of 60°C and a reaction time of 1h. Copper arsenate was prepared by mixing an acidic leaching solution and an alkaline leaching solution. The main phases of copper arsenate were CuHAsO4·1.5H2O and Cu5As4O15·9H2O. Copper arsenate contained 30.13% copper and 31.10% arsenic.

Opis:
This study aims to leach copper from chalcopyrite and optimizing the leaching process, using the response surface methodology (RSM). The RSM, a D-optimal design with four factors in three levels was employed to evaluate the effect of particle size, temperature, silver-coated pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio and redox potential parameters on the copper extraction efficiency. A quadratic model was then proposed by the RSM to correlate leaching variables. The tests results indicated that the model was significant with the experimental data at a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.96. The most important parameters of copper extraction efficiency were particle size and silver-coated pyrite-to-chalcopyrite ratio, and also the squared term of particle size (A2), temperature (B2) and redox potential (D2). In addition, the interaction between redox potential and silver-coated pyrite-to-chalcopyrite ratio (CD) was significant. It was shown that the finer the particle size the faster the leaching rate of copper. It was also indicated that by increasing silver-coated pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio of 6:1 copper recovery increased. The maximum recovery of copper (71%) was obtained for the particle size of -38 μm, 70 °C, 420 mV of redox potential, silver-coated pyrite-to-chalcopyrite ratio of 6 and leaching time of 8 hours.

Copper smelter slag and copper smelter slag flotation tailings were leached using sulphuric acid solutions, without or with the addition of either ferric sulphate or hydrogen peroxide. Copper extraction from the slag was typically found to be twice as high as that from the slag flotation tailings. Hydrogen peroxide was determined to be the best lixiviant. Thus, copper and iron extractions were 63.4% and 48.6%, respectively, when leaching the slag with 3 M H2O2, after 120 minutes of reaction at room temperature. Copper dissolution was generally found to be the dominant process within the first 60 minutes of reaction, whereas iron dissolution dominated afterwards.

Opis:
Acid heap leaching is a metal extraction process from low grade ores normally 1-2% oxidised valuable mineral using a leachant (e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid (H2SO4). The ore is crushed, cured, agglomerated and stacked on an impermeable pad. Raffinate dosed with concentrated sulphuric (H2SO4) acid is sprayed on the stacked ore to produce a pregnant leach solution. Though cheap the process maybe, it is affected by the pH of the leaching liquor, nominal crushing size, temperature, optimal stacking height, irrigation rate, solid-to-liquid ratio, permeability, gangue minerals, temperature, nominal crush size, ore particle size distribution affect. The aim of this paper is to investigate the most effective raffinate pH for leaching out copper and cobalt from low grade ore. The ore contains malachite (Cu2(CO3) (OH)2), cobalt oxide, hematite (Fe2O3) and about 94 wt. % gangue mineral (CaCO3, CaO and SiO2)content. CaO is highly soluble in acid and SiO2 is also soluble in acid when presence in the form complex compounds such as calcium silicate (CaSiO3, Ca2SiO4) or feldspar (KAlSi3O8) and hence they significantly interfere the heap leaching process. In order to analyse the optimal pH, three samples of different composition were used in our experiments. The samples were ground to a particle size of ≤ 50mm, cured and agglomerated before leaching with the raffinate solution containing Ca2+(12.095%), Fe3+(0.158%), Cu2+ (0.1185%), and Co2+(0.216%) from the solvent extraction dosed with concentrated sulphuric (H2SO4) acid (98%) at different pH ranges (0.3-0.4, 0.54-0.6 and 0.7-1). The effect of the raffinate pH was analyzed by leaching the samples at different pH (0.3-0.4, 0.54-0.6 and 0.7-1) and analyzing the solution and the leach residue via atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) technique. The one treated at a pH range of 0.54-0.6 yielded the highest concentration of copper (24gpl), cobalt (0.28gpl) and iron (3.65gpl) in the pregnant leach solution and the highest recovery of copper(42.23%), cobalt (21.90%) and iron (47.87%).The leach residue for sample 1 treated with leaching liquor (pH 0.3-0.4) were Cu2+ (0.50%), Fe3+ (1.12%), Co2+ (0.354%) and Ca2+ (0.057%). The leaching residue for sample 2 treated with leaching liquor (pH 0.54-0.6) were Cu2+(0.065%), Fe3+(0.057%), Co2+(0.27%), Ca2+(0.097%) and SiO2(0.31%).The leach residue for sample 3 treated with leaching liquor (pH 0.7-1) were Cu2+ (0.24%), Fe3+ (0.31%), Co2+ (0.31%), Ca2+ (0.25%) and SiO2(0.64%). Since almost all silica was consumed by the leaching liquor in sample 1, more silicic acid was produced as shown in equation (1) which decomposed in equation (2) to produce silica gel. The silica gel reduced the permeability of the leaching liquor by preventing it from reacting with the entire ore leading to less concentrations and recoveries of the valuable (Cu, Co and Fe). The experimental results were compared with the thermodynamic prediction from the FactSage software. [formula]
Ruda zawiera malachit (Cu2(CO3) (OH)2), tlenek kobaltu, hematyt (Fe2O3) i około 94% wag. zawartości skały płonnej mineralnej (CaCO3, CaO i SiO2). Próbka, którą traktowano roztworem o zakresie pH 0,54-0,6 wykazała najwyższe stężenie miedzi (24gpl), kobaltu (0,28gpl) i żelaza (3,65gpl) w macierzystym roztworze ługu i największy odzysk miedzi (42,23%), kobaltu (21,90%) i żelaza (47,87%). Żel krzemionkowy zmniejsza przepuszczalność cieczy ługującej, zapobiegając przed reakcją z całą rudą, co prowadzi do mniejszych stężeń i odzyskiwania wartościowych Cu, Co i Fe. Wyniki doświadczalne porównano z prognozami termodynamicznymi z oprogramowania FactSage. [wzór]

Opis:
Permeability reduction is a major challenge in heap leaching, primarily caused by the accumulation of fines that move with the leaching agent, leading to the formation of dead zones and channeling within the heap. In the Aria copper beneficiation plant, the 0–2 mm fraction with a copper grade of 1.4% undergoes pre-separation prior to heap loading without further processing. This study investigated the potential of using the agglomeration method to improve permeability in the case of using the 0–2 mm fraction of ore. Mineral compounds, such as sodium silicate and calcium sulfate, and non-ionic, cationic, and anionic polymer compounds, were used in the agglomeration process. The strength of interparticle bonding was evaluated by measuring the fine migration percentage (FMP) in the soak test. The results revealed that agglomerates produced using non-ionic compounds had the highest bonding strength, with an FMP of 3.89%, the lowest of all the compounds tested. This enhanced bonding strength was attributed to the combined influence of hydrogen bonding forces and van der Waals forces.
