Opis:
Japanese given names reflect through their kanji selection particular perceived or anticipated aspects concerning their bearers, providing an insight into the changing values of Japanese society. In the past, numbers were used in names mainly to refer to the order of birth, the time of birth, or, in the case of large numbers, to express a wish for longevity. Within the larger historical context, this paper focuses on the use of kanji representing numbers in the names of children born in the last ten years (2008–2017), exploring the recent reasons for their choice and what values and priorities of recent Japanese parents they reflect.

Opis:
The modern kimono might look similar to its historical predecessor, but it has, in fact, gone through a vast array of changes. When Japan opened up to Western culture during the Meiji period, the need to distinguish the ‘ours’ from the ‘foreign’ started a process that turned the kimono into the easily recognizable symbol of ‘Japaneseness’ that it is today. Because of its long history and cultural significance, the importance of this traditional item of dress cannot be understated. Several centuries-old forms of craftsmanship are tied nowadays to its continued existence. In this article, I delve into some of the kimono’s rich history and the changes it went through both as a piece of clothing and an important element of contemporary Japan’s cultural heritage. I also address some of the criticism that has been directed at it through the ages, as well as speculate about its plausible future as a fashion item.

Opis:
The article analyzes selected women rights in comparison to the past, contemporary social problems of Japanese society and stereotypical social roles of women. Taking into consideration the future of Japan, the most important problem of Japanese society is that Japan suffers from declining fertility-rate and rapidly aging population. In the next 50 years there will probably be only 84 million Japanese people (currently slightly above 127 million). The working age population (15–64) will fall by nearly half from today’s level of 80 million to 42 million. Along with the change of the customary perception of female traditional social roles, the professional activity of Japanese women seems to be the only solution. What is more, new laws giving the same rights to Japanese woman as Japanese men have, should be implemented. This article examines women’s basic human rights in contemporary Japan, including historical background, Japanese Prime Minister Sh. Abe’s policy toward women and attempts to find improvements in the women’s lives connected with attempts to change the laws and traditions of this patriarchal society. The assumption is made that though Japanese women can exercise their rights thanks to the newest Constitution, their lives are often subdued to old patriarchal traditions and perceptions of their roles as well as regulations established after World War II.

Opis:
The practice of enjo-kôsai (compensated dating) arose in the mid-1990s in Japan. It is a trend where an older, wealthy man sponsors attractive and significantly younger women (often high school girls) for their companionship and sometimes sexual services. Those young girls, by becoming involved in an enjo-kôsai relationship, are trying to make money to purchase brand clothes and accessories. Call Me Komachi (2003) is a play which deals with the enjo-kôsai problem. The main protagonist is a high school girl named Reika, who has an older sponsor. Ono no Komachi, who is mentioned in the title of a play, was a famous Japanese poet of the early Heian Period. Why is a poet from ancient Japan mentioned in the title of a play about a problem of modern Japanese society?
