The paper describes various types of deposits of injectors used in CI engines with direct and indirect fuel injection. Various factors have been determined which affect the formation and size of deposits. These factors have also been classified and evaluated in terms of their impact on the formation of deposits precursors and further changes of deposits during the engine life. The results of deposits formation tests have been presented. The external and internal deposits in the High Pressure Common Rail fuel injection systems have been photographed and described. The impact of formed deposits on the diagnostic parameters of injectors has been discussed broadly as it determines the range of injectors’ dysfunction and their fit for further use.

Opis:
The traditional use of fossil-based fuels is now widely considered unsustainable because of depleting their natural resources. Potential substitutes of fossil fuels are oils of renewable origin such as various vegetable and non-edible oils. The aim of using these oils or their methyl esters (biodiesel) is to establish and maintain a balance between agriculture, economy and environment protection. However, realizing the increasing demand of raw materials currently used can be achieved not only by increasing the production area but also by introducing new materials or technologies. The article presents and evaluates modern raw fuel components that are currently being investigated. Furthermore, the article deals with the dual fuel combustion technology in detail, with which the processed fuels are becoming available for use in Compression Ignition (CI) engines, where conventional blending is difficult or their use exclusively in diesel engines is economically unjustified. In case of dual fuel engine systems, the primary fuel, such as (wet)ethanol, methanol, LPG, H2 etc. is injected into the intake manifold of the engine and the premixed mixture simultaneously produced is ignited by the pilot diesel fuel as secondary fuel injected directly into the engine cylinder. This technology can significantly reduce exhaust emissions and can slightly increase engine efficiency. The achievements in this field and recently obtained results by the author and his research group are also presented. Exhaust emissions, performance and combustion characteristics were measured and analyzed with respect to several operating parameters as follows: premixed ratio (rp), pilot timing and engine load.

Opis:
Spark-ignition (SI) engines are highly susceptible to excess emissions when started at low ambient temperatures, a phenomenon which has been widely discussed in the literature. Direct injection diesel engines feature a markedly different fuelling and combustion strategy, and as such their emissions behaviour is somewhat different from gasoline engines. The excess emissions of diesel engines at low ambient temperatures should also differ. The aim of this study was to compare excess emissions of gaseous and solid pollutants over a legislative driving cycle (the New European Driving Cycle, NEDC) following cold start at a low ambient temperature for both engine types. This paper examines emissions at low ambient temperatures with a special focus on cold start; emissions are also compared to start-up at a higher ambient temperature (24 °C). The causes of excess emissions and fuel consumption are briefly discussed. A series of tests were performed on European Euro 5 passenger cars on a chassis dynamometer within an advanced climate-controlled test laboratory at BOSMAL Automotive Research and Development Institute, Poland. Emissions data obtained over the Urban Driving Cycle by testing at 24 °C and at –7 °C, are presented for a selection of modern Euro 5 gasoline and diesel vehicles representative of the European passenger car fleet. A full modal emissions analysis was also conducted at 24 °C and at –7 °C over the NEDC. Emissions and fuel consumption were substantially higher at –7 °C than at 24 °C.
Celem niniejszej pracy była analiza problemu podwyższonej emisji związków szkodliwych spalin przy eksploatacji samochodów osobowych w niskich temperaturach otoczenia i porównanie emisji gazowych związków szkodliwych spalin i cząstek stałych z samochodów osobowych spełniających wymagania Euro 5 w czasie homologacyjnego testu jezdnego NEDC, rozpoczynającego się od rozruchu zimnego silnika, wykonywanego w normalnych i niskich temperaturach otoczenia. Przeprowadzono analizę wyników badań, uzyskanych w laboratorium emisji spalin Instytutu Badań i Rozwoju Motoryzacji BOSMAL, w zakresie emisji związków szkodliwych spalin w testach prowadzonych w temperaturach otoczenia +24 °C i –7 °C, dla nowoczesnych samochodów napędzanych silniami ZI i ZS, spełniających wymagania Euro 5. Stwierdzono znacznie podwyższony poziom emisji związków szkodliwych i zużycia paliwa w testach wykonywanych w ujemnych temperaturach otoczenia. Przyczyny podwyższonej emisji i zużycia paliwa w czasie rozruchu zimnego silnika i w czasie jego eksploatacji w niskich temperaturach otoczenia zostały przeanalizowane i opisane.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to analyse the possibilities of improving the ecological parameters of compression – ignition CI engines. During the analysis of exhaust gas, attention was mainly paid to the emission of nitrogen oxides and carbon black soot. A method was proposed to reduce the above chemical elements in CI – engine exhaust fumes by using the annular channels on the non-working part of the fuel injector needle and applying a platinum catalyst on them. The task of these annular channels is to mix and agitate the fuel before injection to the combustion chamber and to enlarge the contact surface area of catalyst. The task of catalytic coating is to initiate the reaction of dehydrogenation of paraffinic hydrocarbons to olefinic ones with a free hydrogen molecule. Hydrogen, owing to its properties, can shorten the period of delay of spontaneous ignition of combustible mixture in the engine combustion chamber, which affects the entire combustion process and improves the ecological parameters of a CI engine.

Opis:
Results of research on the correlation between pollutant emission rates and the engine operation states that determine the pollutant emissions have been presented. The tests were carried out on a compression ignition (CI) engine Cummins 6C8.3 in the NRTC (Non-Road Transient Cycle) test conditions. At the tests, the speed, torque, and effective power of the engine under test were chosen as the main characteristics of the engine operation states that determine pollutant emissions. Correlation dependences of pollutant emission rates on engine operation states have been shown. Mathematic models of pollutant emission rates have been defined as seconddegree polynomial functions of engine speed and torque. To analyse the correlation between the sets under investigation, the Pearson’s linear correlation, Spearman’s rank correlation, Kruskal’s gamma correlation, and Kendall’s tau correlation theories were used. It has been found statistically justifiable to treat the examined pairs of sets of physical quantities as strongly correlated. Moreover, the quantities defining the engine operation state have been found to have a similar impact on the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons emission rates, while their impact on the nitrogen oxides emission rates has been found to be quite different. For the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons emission rates, the engine speed has been found to be the factor of the strongest impact; as regards the nitrogen oxides emission rates, they were most strongly affected by the torque and effective power of the engine.
W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań korelacyjnych natężenia emisji zanieczyszczeń i stanów pracy silnika, determinujących emisję zanieczyszczeń. Badania wykonano dla silnika o zapłonie samoczynnym Cummins 6C8.3 w teście dynamicznym NRTC (Non-Road Transient Cycle – test przejściowy silników spalinowych maszyn niedrogowych). Jako wielkości stanu pracy silnika, determinujące emisję zanieczyszczeń, przyjęto: prędkość obrotową, moment obrotowy i moc użyteczną. Przedstawiono zależności korelacyjne natężenia emisji zanieczyszczeń od stanów pracy silnika. Wyznaczono modele matematyczne natężenia emisji zanieczyszczeń jako funkcje wielomianowe stopnia drugiego prędkości obrotowej i momentu obrotowego. Do analizy korelacji badanych zbiorów wykorzystano teorię korelacji liniowej Pearsona, korelacji rang Spearmana, korelacji gamma Kruskala i korelacji tau Kendalla.

The main problem that the automotive industry has been dealing with since the beginning of the XXI century is the need to reduce the exhaust emissions from piston combustion engines. Another, not at all less important problem is the depleting natural resources of crude oil. There are many concepts aiming at resolving of the said issues. One of them is the possibility of application of dimethyl ether (DME) in a classic engine. The paper characterizes this fuel, drawing attention to the aspects related to the adaptation of the engine to this type of fuel, presents the process of its atomization and relevant exhaust emissions.

Opis:
Mixture preparation and combustion processes in internal combustion engines are very complex and very difficult to investigate. These processes run very quickly and their parameters are changed quickly and in wide ranges. Therefore, the interpretation of measurement results is very difficult and uncertain. The visualization methods applied in the combustion researches can help to interpret the results. For many years, the visualization methods have been developed at the Aircraft Engine Department of Heat Engineering Institute of Warsaw University of Technology, in the field of combustion in engines, detonation and gas dynamics research. In these researches, different method of registration of very fast changes of combustion were applied. The combustion experiments have been performed in constant volume bomb, rapid compression machines and experimental visualisation engines. In the last case, the electronic digital camera of Photram SA 1.3 has been used. This paper refers to the experiments, which were conducted using rapid compression machine. Their goal was explanation the combustion mechanism in combustion system with semi-open combustion chamber under different parameters of this system. The obtained results show a strong influence of combustion system parameters on combustion mechanism, especially on a compression ratio and ignition timing. The strong swirls were registered at all sharp edges on combustion chamber during compression stroke. These swirls had a strong influence on the combustion system operation.

The results of comparative research of the organie components in the exhaust emissions of the CI engine fuelled with Diesel oil or rape seed methyl esters (RSME) were presented in this paper. The experimental works reported here was carriedout on the turbocharged, four cylinder, water cooled, CI engine, T 370 type (80 kW rated power at 2400 rpm, 400 Nm maximum torque at 1440 rpm, bore/stroke - 110/120 mm, displacement volume - 4560 cm3, compression ratio 17:1). The Signal equipment and AVL eeuipment were used for regulated exhaust emissions measurements and Hewlett Packard chromatograph type HP 5890 H for measurements of organic species emissions. The research was carried out under engine full load at maximum torque speed and at rated power speed. Using special equipment and normalized procedures the chromatographic test samples were collected. The 83 species were identified in HC emissions at these experiments but only the benzene, toluene and acetaldehyde were the components which were detected in substantial guantity. The research results show that the percentage emissions of individual components in total emissions of HC were weakly dependent on the used fuel. However in the case of RSME engine feed the HC emissions were lower than hose of the engine fuelled with Diesel oil and total emissions of their components were lower. Concluding, emissions from RSME combustion are less harmful than emissions of the engine fuelled with Diesel oil.

The aim of analysis presented in the article is results of measurements of torsional deflections of a crankshaft of three-cylinder internal combustion diesel engine. The wavelets of the run of torsional twists were processed by decomposition to harmonics using FFT. In order to exactly recognize all dynamic aspects of gas forces acting during working stroke, decomposition was done in two ways: first one relaying on records encompassing one working cycle (two revolutions), the second one based at separated periods encompassing angular an interval from TDC (Top Dead Centre) of one cylinder to TDC of subsequent in firing order. For three-cylinder engine, width of the interval is 240 degrees of crank angle. In order to obtain reliable results, torsional deflection signals acquisitions were recorded numerous times including changes of outer conditions (temperature, atmospheric pressure) and different values of the engine loads. The main goal of conducted experiments was looking for an answer of a question if exist any differences between frequency spectrums of harmonics of run of full cycle ( two revolutions) and the same cycle divided by three separate intervals. Analysis was conducted in order to state any possibility of diagnostic signals acquisition caused by abnormalities of combustion process. Results were presented in form of comparison of frequency spectra taken from full cycle and divided intervals.

The rapid compression machines (RCM) are extensive applied to combustion process researches and mixture process preparation research in the internal combustion engines (ICE). The principal advantage of these arrangements is easy optical access to the inside space of combustion chamber. This enables to observe the course of ignition process and the flame propagation process. There are some RCM designs, which they differ, first of all, the modelling method of piston movement into cylinder. The most known designs use the pneumatic and hydraulic drives. Their concern is that they enable the modelling compression stroke only but combustion is performed in constant volume combustion chamber. It was not relevant for the research of the new combustion system elaborated at Aircraft Engine Department of Warsaw University of Technology (AED). The RCM elaborated at AED has unique form it includes the crank mechanism, speedy operating electromagnetic clutch and flywheel. The applying of this design enables modelling the compression stroke and working stroke (two-stroke from engine cycle). It enables assessment of the system with semi-open combustion chamber what it will be impossible using other RCM designs. The different designs RCM used for combustion research at the research and development centres, on worldwide will be compared with the design of RCM developed at AED. The most known designs of the different RCM were described and the research result examples were given in this paper. The advantages and disadvantages of the different designs were discussed too in this paper.

The analysis of fuel injection processes in diesel engines showed the convergence of physical parameters affecting the mean diameter of the Sauter SMD (selected as a spray quality parameter) of the atomized fuel droplets and the parameters of the acoustic signal emission originating from the spring waves accompanying the atomization process. In experimental studies, the laser diffraction method was used to measure the atomization quality with the Malvern Spraytec device.
