Opis:
In the last few decades exhaust emissions of road vehicles have decreased dramatically, owing to the more and more stringent emission standards issued by the legislative bodies of different countries, combined with the necessity of cleaner, better performing vehicles from society side. The introduction of Common Rail (CR) injection systems has been a great step towards achieving this target, thanks to its flexibility in fuel injection pressure, timing, and length, along variable engine load conditions. However, it is highly time and resource consuming to set up the injection system for all operating points of different engines, moreover, as the injection is a small scale, high speed process, the behaviour of the internal processes is challenging to measure. The best solution for these problems is to create a detailed model of the injector, where all the hydraulic, mechanic, and electromagnetic subsystems are represented, this way the internal working conditions can be analysed and resources can be saved. In this work, a detailed model of a first generation CR injector for commercial vehicles is presented and validated against needle lift data. The fluid dynamic and mechanic sub-systems are presented in details to thoroughly investigate the working principles of the injector internal parts. The fluid dynamic subsystem contains the chambers, holes, and throttles of the injector, while the mechanic subsystem models the motion and behaviour of the internal parts. The main features of the injector internal working conditions are described and analysed. Apart from the needle lift, these included solenoid anchor, pin and control piston lifts, the control chamber pressure and the mechanical force acting on the anchor. Five test cases were chosen on a medium duty test engine to represent a wide range of operation points from full load to idle and the simulated results were compared to the measured data. The simulated control piston movement accurately matched the measured curves in every test case.

Opis:
The bi-fuel supply of CI engine gives the possibility for the utilization of alternative fuels with low cetane number. The one from the group of many alternative fuels possible to the utilization, fuel that is possible to ignite in the combustion chamber of CI engine by piloting dose of diesel fuel is the natural gas. The paper presents some concepts of dual fuelling of turbocharged CI engine with natural gas and diesel oil. The experiments are carried out on the engine with common rail system, which works together with gas fuel system (gas injection). Gas is injected to inlet channel when the inlet valve is open. For the purpose of the concept choice for the selection doses sizes of separate fuels and the selection of the optimum quantity of air delivered to the engine combustion chamber for different engine loads and speeds, several number of the load characteristics of conventionally powered engine with factory fuel system and exhaust recirculation switched on and the series of load characteristics with the exhaust recirculation switched off was performed, in order to allow elimination of exhaust recirculation influence on the process of combustion and on the dual fuel system engine parameters during investigations. The load characteristics of dual fuelled powered engine are carried out presently. Conclusions from the comparison of the measured parameters will be utilized in the design and the development of control algorithm for injection of both fuels, and also air flow control in the induction system and exhaust through the turbine.

Opis:
Natural gas is one of the potential combustion engine fuels whose proportion in the overall energy balance is expected to increase. Owing to some of its properties, its use requires a dual-fuel supply system; thus, the use of natural gas as a fuel for diesel engines is currently limited. Systems that supply gas fuel to diesel engines do not usually interfere with the engine control system. This solution significantly reduces system-installation costs. However, as demonstrated in the present study, it considerably changes the course of the combustion process, which increases thermal and mechanical loads. In this case, the combustion process can be controlled by changing the liquid fuel injection pressure or advancing the injection angle. This, however, requires interference with the engine control system.

Opis:
Self-ignition engines are currently used to drive lorries, agricultural and road construction machines, as well as passenger cars. Common Rail supply systems are widely used in such engines. Arguments for using these systems include the simple construction of a system as well as practically unlimited control of fuel feeding (division of a fuel dose into several portions), which allows for controlling the fuel combustion process. This facilitates optimisation of the combustion process in limiting toxic emissions, which is the main evaluation criterion for modern combustion engines. Operation of an engine with a Common Rail system is controlled by an Electronic Diesel Control (EDC), which is responsible not only for controlling the supply system, but also for the diagnostics of the whole engine. The diagnostic monitors embedded in the controller supervise the operation of the supply system, but also of the whole engine, including the systems responsible for reducing toxic emissions released to the atmosphere, in accordance with the European On Board Diagnostic (EOBD) standard. Unfortunately, despite sophisticated diagnostic functions, defects sometimes occur in vehicles with engines with a CR system, which are not signalled by EOBD systems. In such cases, an additional tool is needed to help a diagnostician to identify the cause of improper operation of an engine. This article presents several examples to describe the diagnostics of a Common Rail system using an analyser of diagnostic electric signals to detect the cause of such defects.

Limited oil resources, combined with the need to stem the toxic emissions to the atmosphere, necessitate seeking alternative fuels for combustion engines. According to forecasts, natural gas will be one of those fuels whose importance is likely to increase in future. Because of its properties, natural gas can be used directly in spark-ignition engines. When natural gas is used as fuel in much more efficient self-ignition engines, it is necessary to use dual fuelling. This paper presents the effect of the proportion of natural gas in the feed dose on the course of the combustion process in a turbocharged self-ignition engine. The engine was controlled by the Common Rail fuel system, programmed for single-fuel operation.

Opis:
The struggle against global warming necessitates the search for new sources of energy, which limit the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Among various fuels used to supply energy nowadays, the importance of natural gas is constantly growing. This is caused by the fact that this fuel is characterised by the lowest share of coal among all fossil fuels. Because of its properties, natural gas can be used directly to power spark-ignition engines. The use of this fuel for compression-ignition engines on the other hand is limited due to the high autoignition temperature of methane. Currently, research is being conducted in numerous centres on the possibility of using fuel gases to power CI engines operating in a dual-fuel system. The present article discusses the impact of the share of CNG in the supply dose on the operation of a CI engine. An engine with the Common Rail injection system programmed for mono-fuel operation was used in the research. Based on the conducted tests it has been proved that supplying this type of engine with fuel gas considerably changes the course of the combustion process, which is caused by the fact that the gas and air mixture present in the combustion chamber starts burning now of the autoignition of the first portion of liquid fuel. The obtained test results confirm the necessity to change the injection parameters of the pilot dose of diesel fuel (the timing angle of injection and the pressure of fuel) in cases when this type of engine operates in a dual-fuel system.

Opis:
In recent years the use of alternative fuels based, among other things, on vegetable oil is causing increasing concern, which is also observed in our country. Such fuels have different physical and chemical properties (especially viscosity) with reference to the standard diesel fuel. Therefore it is important to know the effect of the additive of biocomponents on fuel injection process, in particular of its parameters, which play an important role in the combustion process and formation of pollutions in exhaust gases. In the paper is presented the test results of selected parameters of the injection process executing by four different electromagnetically controlled injectors using diesel fuel without the biocomponents and mixtures of such fuel with esters of rapeseed oil (FAME). Investigations were carried out on a specially prepared test stand which enables the measurement of fuel delivery and fuel returning from the injector together with its density and temperature. Additionally, beside mentioned parameters, there were recorded high-speed courses of pressure in the high-pressure pipe behind the rail and before the injector. Next, using a system of AVL Visioscope, the fuel injection into the visualization chamber filled with fuel was recorded. It determined the basic parameters of the fuel spray. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of fuel type on the injection process executed by the injectors with different constructional parameters.

The storage supply systems of Common Rail type are characterized by high possibilities in shaping the rate of injection. The possibility to implement multi-injection at high pressure, easiness of adapting the system to the engine, relatively easiness of compensation the arrangement of injector parameters resulting from work tolerance, as well as easiness of making changes in the electronic engine controller enabling the production of engines with various performances, cause that type of these solutions currently are widely used injection systems in diesel engines. Injection system should be characterized above all by high precision fuel dosing into engine cylinders, the accuracy in starts controlling of individual phase of injection, repeatability and reliability and durability, as well as the up keep of these parameters for long time during operating duration. Fuel injection system works in difficult conditions resulting from high pressure, vibrations, electromagnetic interference affecting electronic executive systems and high temperatures. Especially the injector and injection pipes are open to high temperatures. The dimensions of used elements are also important. The article presents selected results concerning the effect of the length of high-pressure pipes on injection process parameters such as fuel amount, overflow in injector, and the fuel pressure course in injection pipe in front of electromagnetic injector socket. The study was conducted with test stand with electronic measurement system of fuel amount. The tests were made at different pressures in the rail and for different durations of the injector opening.

Modern marine Diesel prime movers are equipped with so called ‘common rail’ as a part installed in the fuel injection system. This kind of design, gives a possibility to control fuel injection process in ways which were not available to carry out on conventionally designed engines. During the ship operation with a reduced speed and reduced load of the main engine, especially under the “Super Slow Steaming” conditions the waste heat recovery process in exhaust gas boiler is being disturbed. In the article, there is presented a possibility to increase the steam production of the waste heat boiler by interference in the fuel injection pattern for the engine. For the selected system “low speed main engine – smoke tube exhaust gas boiler” the test session has been carried out under the real ambient and operational condition of the ship to verify described possibility. Obtained results have been presented.

The article presents the laboratory tests results of the influence of the diesel oil content in a mixture with rapeseed oil on the operating parameters of a diesel engine with the CommonRail fuel supply system. Fuel mixtures with a rapeseed content of 0%, 50%, 70%, 100% were used. The article presents the results of tests carried out for various configurations of the object. The measurements included tests of exhaust gases: the content of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides as well as specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature. As a result of the research, it was noticed that the use of rapeseed oil causes a significant increase in fuel consumption and an increase in emissions. At a crankshaft speed of 2500 rpm and a torque generated by the engine crankshaft of 12 Nm, the specific fuel consumption for a 0% rapeseed content is 310 g/kWh. For the same engine operating conditions and the same rapeseed content of the fuel, the fuel consumption for 100% rapeseed content is 330 g/kWh. For the same engine operating parameters, analysis of the carbon dioxide content in the exhaust gas yields a value of 7.8x104 ppm for a rapeseed content of 0%. For the same engine operating conditions and for the oilseed rape content in the fuel is 100% 8.4x104 ppm. The mathematical models describing the effects of engine operating parameters and rapeseed oil content in the mixture on the observed values were created with the Scilab program. The degree of agreement of the determined mathematical models was checked by calculating the coefficient of determination (R2). The results are shown in 3D figures.

To meet the future stringent emission standards, innovative diesel engine technology, exhaust gas after-treatment, and clean alternative fuels are required. Oxygenated fuels showed tendency to decrease internal combustion engine emissions. In the same time, advanced fuel injection modes can promote further reduction in pollutants at the exhaust without penalty for the combustion efficiency. One of the more interesting solutions is provided by the premixed low temperature combustion (LTC) mechanism jointly to lower-cetane, higher-volatility fuels. In this paper, to understand the role played by these factors on soot formation, cycle resolved visualization, UV-visible optical imaging were applied in an optically accessed high swirl multi-jets compression ignition engine. Combustion tests were carried out using two fuels: commercial diesel and a blend of diesel with n-butanol. The fuels were tested at 70MPa injection pressure and different timings. At late injection timing coupled to high EGR rate (50%), the blends increased the ignition delay allowing operating in partially premixed LTC (PPLTC) regime in which the fuel is completely injected before the start of combustion. Strong reduction in engine out emissions of smoke and NOx were obtained with a little penalty on engine efficiency. This limitation was overcome operating at earlier injection timing in which a mixing controlled combustion (MCC) LTC regime was realized. In this regime, a good compromise between low engine out emissions and efficiency was achieved.
